Current mood:  mischievous

Football Manager 2007 is evolution, rather than revolution, however, a lot of the new features are revolutionary not just for the game, but for the whole genre. And there are a lot of them

The most amount of new features weve had in one of our games was the 40 in last years Football Manager 2006. This year, there are over 100! I gave up counting at 106, and the dev team keep putting other new things into the game whilst playing and noticing ways to improve it, particularly based around the user friendly mantra thats been a big part of the development process this year. We have had many comments about our game being overwhelming, and seeing features being lost in the mass of screens, so whilst weve added more to the game than ever before, weve also made it so that its easier to use, navigate, control and all options should be more obvious to the user. You can still ignore things if you want to, and still get your assistant manager to help out with some of the more advanced and complicated features, but at least they are easy to spot if you do want the full football management experience.

Now, Im not going to ruin everything by just giving a list of all of the myriad of new features in the game and a brief description because, well, I dont want to ruin the game for when you start playing it J. So what Im going to do over the next 4 weeks is go through a few of the new ideas inside the game, well, quite a few actually, with the blogs on myspace and a round up with screenshots on sigames.com at the end of each week. The other features will be for you to discover for yourselves

So, wheres a good place to start? One of the internal mantras for this years game has been user friendly, user friendly, user friendly. Weve seen with our PSP game that making the game easier to use is a good thing, although obviously our PC (not forgetting Mac and the new format, Intel Mac or even the Xbox 360 version) the game is a lot more in-depth, and there is no interest from us to dumb down the game. So weve worked very hard to keep everything, and more, but present it better to the user.

USER FRIENDLY

The main starting point for this was with the user interface team and the way that the new skin was designed and works. Adding in icons that were used on the Xbox 360 game was the first thing done, and the dialogue boxes and polygon graphical player stat view from that version too, but these soon got expanded upon to include a vidi printer (currently dubbed Football Manager Live!which shows news and other important info, with the ticker bar now showing interesting stats about active leagues.

There are also hints & tips throughout the game, but rather than just a handful, weve got over 300. This should suit both the new users and advanced users, and tell them about things that they can do in game, and how to do them, along with the updated tutorial which has been worked on by the team at footballmanager.net. The hints and tips have come from a variety of different people to ensure that all peoples style of play is covered, and even Ive learnt things about the game that I didnt know before.

Add to that the introduction of player bios, photos, club bios, logos and other important information to news items, that should certainly save a few mouse clicks. Easier positioning, naming of icons and options, plus the addition of quick links (icons), as well as the Flexion skin being the best looking and easiest skin to use on a Sports Interactive game to date.

The snapshot screen has been massively under-utilised since its introduction, so weve made this appear more often, added more options to be displayed and also made it user configurable, so its a great way to see the info that you want to see, all on one screen. Add to this customisable bookmarks and keyboard shortcuts, and were giving power to you to make it easier for you to navigate.

Part 2 of the "interface" new features will follow in a couple of days....

About this time every year we get to wonder when can we get our hands on it, when will a demo be released, but I can wait, if 2007 is even better than 2006 then I will be blown away.

Something tels me it will be better, and in spades..........

We never set release dates (or demo dates) until the game is in manufacture. But we'll let you know as soon as we know here, on our website, and our forums.

Hey i was curious to know if it will have Juventus in Serie B with minus 17 points along with the other 3 Italian teams. Also with Rotherham on minus points?

I have been reading lots and lots of reviews about FM06 and FM07. I'm stuck, which one should i go for? is it worth buying 06? I have downloaded the demo and love the fact it is exactly like the real season with Liverpool having to qualify from Stage 1. I'm a Liverpool fan.

We try and use the real world as much as possible, so teams that start on negative points in real life will start on negative points in the game.

As for which to go for, that depends on whether you want to wait a couple of months before playing, as FM07 isn't going to be out til then. FM06 is a great game. FM07 will be better :)

Quick question about the club and player bios, were they not in the game a few years back, but were removed due to basically having only a few of them for the top clubs and players? Will it be the same situation with FM2007? It's a nice welcome addition true, but if it only has a few entries it'll be pretty pointless in the scheme of things.

Hi Reece,

The player bios work on ingame stats, so will be there for every player, club and manager.

So this is just a sexed up version of the Talented Manager/ Strong full back/ Continental club reputation descriptions? And if this is the case if i bought a lot of quick, good passing and technical players, the club would recieve a similar reputation to say, Arsenal?

What i percieved it to be was a summarised history of the club, and it's major acheivements. Like the trophy history screen but in the written word. If i'm being honest the trophy screen to me feels soulless, and a personalised description about the team's major acheivements, style of play, and favoured personnel would be very welcome, as at the moment we can see they are favoured, but not why they are favoured. Maybe personalised descriptions could be submitted to you, vetted, and uploaded as a data update occaisionally. The same sort of thing as Wikipedia, but for FM. That would be immense.

Hmm. Not really sure what you mean. If you mean "is the new game completely re-written from scratch" then the answer is no. But I'd say that well over 100 new features kind of stops it from being a "glorified data update". If it was half a dozen new features, then I'd agree with you. It will be interesting if you still think that when all has been revealed in a few weeks.

in the early cm fm games you could go to a team and see who the star player was, by the little star icon at the side of there names. Do you no if that feature will be back in, it was always a good quick ref. to se who was the top dog in the team

one idea that  i would like to see and others have agreed with me is the option to have classic teams and seasons playable as scenarios. i have seen these in unofficial updates but i was wondering if it would be possible for official download patches, maybe myspace users could have a poll of the most popular seasons and you could produce these as save game options or something?

well its all very well you saying there are over 100 new features, but this entry (and the next from the looks of it) is just about the interface, which seeing as there is nothing wrong with the interface in 06, is totally irrelevent to me and i'm sure plenty of other people. stop the "we don't want to ruin the game" rot and tell us what we will get for shelling out £30.

Adam/Dan (for some reason it says "Adam" on the main area of myspace and then "Dan" when I go to reply) - the first 3 blogs will be about the interface and various options within it. The new one is WAY better than the last, and the addition of the stuff as blogged above adds a lot to the game, with lots more information available to the user, a vidiprinter etc, and the things to be announced throughout the rest of the week.

Then there'll be another plethora of features announced over the next few weeks, so I'd suggest a little bit of patience. I would also suggest that, as with any other game you are going to "shell out £30" for if you don't like what you read, you try the demo when it's released (which will be a good few weeks before the game is on the shelves) and make your mind up then, rather than before you have all the information....

wassup from sunny South Africa.  FM2006 is a great game, but 1 or 2 small things bugged me a bit, and would like to know if they have been looked at for FM2007:

1.   sometimes my club would reject transfer bids for my players automatically, without the "reject all Bids" option being selected

2.   The supporters would start protesting because my team was at the bottom of  the league after two weeks, having played only 1 league game because of european commitments... (got fired once because of that..)

3.   I think the "offer to clubs" option was better in FM2005 than FM2006.  The current one is not user friendly and you often get no results

I know they are small issues, but if sorted out, will add just that little more to an already great game! Keep up the good work!

1.   The supporters start protesting after 2 weeks in the season, when you are 3 games behind in the league due to european commitments... led to me being fired once.. (playing as Leeds and Ajax)

2.    Sometimes transfer bids for players from CPU teams are rejected automatically by my assistant, despite there not being any "reject all bids" selected.

1) there are lots of reasons why their could have been protests! No complaints about that in the testroom on FM07 though.

2) Again, no reports on that from the testroom.

3) Maybe people just didn't want your players or you wanted too much money for them? Try reducing their sale value and see if that helps.

Please have some boerwoers and Simba ketchup crisps for me. I haven't put an order into the South African shop for ages....

This all sounds good. But a bit hard to wait for the game to come.

There's one thing i miss from former games. And that is the clubs stadium pictures showing when you play a game. Why was that feature taken away? There have been many stadium background packs available for download to FM06, but that is just not the same, as you cant see those pictures at match screen, but only when you go to each clubs info screen.

Is it to much to hope for anything happening about that?

WHAT RIVALS!!  i love the current skin and layout finding it really accessable - the feeder club option  is a really good one as i like to sign younger players but give them that experience where i can keep a good eye on them. will there be player spats and incidents - like rooney and ronaldo at world cup/ or dyer and bowyer?

One thing that does continue to bug me is the time it takes from opting to go to detailed tactics in a match, to when you actually get to make your changes. I find it very frustrating that the opposition can make changes, then the game moves on, before I get to make mine.

Can this be looked at ?

Having read the various replies i am sure you guys don't want this turning into a glorified 'we want' list however there are two minor things that have bugged me in previous edditions that if affected would make it more enjoyable.

1) Above certain values of money there is very little option; i.e. 5.25, 5.5 etc etc in the old CM's i used to love the ticker bar where you'd improve the bid by upping one of the numerals. How often do we see footballers going for 18.6 mill or 8.4 things like that often a hundred grand would be the difference between landing a player or not and sometimes you dont have that extra 250k

2) CPU teams offering some unknown pile of monkey spunk for your players. I have lost count of the times i have been offered a complete no-body who has no redeemable attributes for your player who has just had the season of his life. Now ok i can understand a large team like man u or chesea offering a youngster if you are a smaller club and would need replacements however what some of the offers are laughable. Perhaps it would be better to have a note saying the offering team would consider a part exchange deal and a link to a list of players they'd consider in the deal. This way it would improve the interaction tables could be turned whereby you say you'd consider a deal but only if x player is involved. I am sure this sort of thing goes on all the time in professional football.

3) (and finally) My biggest bug has always been the player history screen. A) I hated the subs appearances being bracketed and moving this to only being in the 'total' was a good start in FM2006. Could this not be achieved through a separate column? B) If you loan a player out or he shifts during the season you end up with sometimes dozens of lines which can look unsightly could this not be achieved through a layered file approach? C) In 2006 only the league appearances were included in the 'career history' which never sat right especially if you bought a player to bolster your european chances and used him sparingly in the league! Could this not benefit from a tabbed approach with Total Career, League Career, European Career etc. The achievement section could then cover transfers, loans etc cleaning up a very truncated page.

I am sure there are millions of things you guys would love to do and simply can't or are torn between the wants of some fans against the wants of others; i appreciate you cant please everyone! If any of the lot above can be looked at i'd love it.

Keep up the superb work though!

All i want to see is more arguments between managers and more rivalry's developing i just won the championship with Fulham in 2011 and I was expected to finish midtable and not one manager made a comment all season yet they talk about each other quite a lot, I'd like to see arguments coming up over wot's been said in the media or anything. How about being misquoted in the media haha..I think that's all this game needs

Thanks,

Damn ea.  The key player stars should be brought back. they were sweet. will there be added attributes like shooting power/accuracy instead of just finishing.

Hey Miles

i just wondered if you were planning to introduce any leagues below the conference North/South and if on FM2007 transfer prices in the lower league would be more realistic as in real life clubs from the conference down never spend money on players and are usually pretty happy to sell their for small amounts but on FM 2006 players who stats aren't even that good from low league comand prices of about 20k
