THE REVIEWS ARE IN AND THEY ARE RAVES!!!!

Four of the five reviews that I've seen are just wonderful. They love the show, they congratulate us on its intelligence and humanily and emotional truth and daring. Then they go on to rave about all of the wonderful performers. Looking over the reviews I see that not a single actor was left out for commendation. I'm so excited.

When you take the chance to do something new, to be the "un-cola", there is an extra special sweetness to having the work appreciated. John Bucchino, John Doyle and myself stepped off that ledge of safety and today I am more happy than ever that we did. It looks like we are creating something NEW that is reaching people and touching them in a very special way. YES!

Of course raves for FAITH PRINCE and TOM WOPAT and the rest of the cast are sweet as well since those great artists have forfeited more profitable work to dedicate these months in an out-of-town tryout. Both personally and professionally I'm thrilled the wager has paid off for them. They deserve every word of praise that they've garnered.

And The Old Globe appears to be very happy with the show's reception as well. Their season ticket holders are joyously embracing our show, and new audience is coming to the theater seeking to find out what all the hoopla is about. VERY EXCITING TIMES!!!!

PREJUDICE IS THE GREATEST ENEMY OF ART:

BUT in life there is always one badly behaved guest at the party and in this case it was the reviewer from the L.A. Times. The man begins his piece by telling us that he hates the original film, hates the original teleplay, has no respect or even like for the work of Paddy Chayefsky, dislikes social drama in general, and downright loathes me. He then wastes the rest of his newspaper's space trying to justify his loathsome opinion. I'm sorry, friends, that's not reviewing, that's simply proselytizing.
Knowing his own predisposition and knowing that there was no way he was going to view the show with any seemblance of an open mind, the only fair thing to do was to recuse himself from the assignment and allow someone else to review the show. But bullies don't play fair, do they? He dismissed our show before ever entering the theater. I think his newspaper should do likewise with his contract. Such open hostility for the art of creation does no one, least of all the L.A Times readership, any service.

PREJUDICE IS THE GREATEST ENEMY OF TRUTH:

In amongst the raves I am slightly puzzled by another comment that a few critics made about my character in the show. Anyone familiar with my work knows that I'm no stranger to social controversy. When I wrote TORCH SONG TRILOGY many critics took issue with my character wanting to adopt and raise a child. They were absolutely positive that no gay people had such desires. We now, of course, know that those critics' surety was misplaced.

Likewise when I wrote my play SPOOKHOUSE I was attacked for presenting a mother who hurts her own child and a social worker whose meddling destroys a family. The critics were once again absolutely certain that no mother would ever hurt her own child and that social workers never had negative effects on families. Once again I don't think I'd have a problem with those critics these days.

And when I wrote SAFE SEX and talked about AIDS having a long reaching effect on how we human interrelate the critics were quick to call my claims absurd. They were positive that AIDS would be cured in a year or two and would never touch the lives of non-gay Americans. They absolutely lectured me that AIDS was a passsing phenom.

Please understand that I was not right about those subjects because I am some prophet with a crystal ball. I was right because, before I put pen to paper, I do my research. I don't create just out of my own opinion. Only a lazy intellect assumes that he/she already knows everything about a subject via incidental heresay.

Before I write I read, I interview sources, I examine and probe. Only then can I put my name and reputation behind what I write. But the aforementioned critics blasted my work with no authority but their own misinformation or opinion. In the cases stated above not one of those critics stopped to ask themselves if JUST MAYBE I knew something they didn't know. In the long run I turned out to be right in all instances, but my reputation and writing veracity took painful hits. Truth won the war, but I have plenty of battle scars from the skirmishes.

ONE MORE TIME INTO THE FRAY...

In A CATERED AFFAIR I have been accused, by a few well meaning critics who loved the show, of creating a gay character that is "post-Stonewall" and not true to the period of the piece. Once again I ask: What makes them so sure? Did they do any of the research that I did? Did they interview gay men who lived through the period as I have? Did they view documentaries telling stories of what it was like to be gay in 1953 as I did? Did they read books or personal accounts of gay life in 1953 as I did?

I doubt that one of those critics took the time to be sure they were correct before telling me that I was incorrect. Still they blithely and boldy state in print that I am wrong and they are right!!! I say that is simply outrageous. And I tell you ON RECORD that I did my research and I firmly stand behind my portrayal of that character as true and real. The funny part is that these opinions, like most advice, were not given to harm, but to help me make a better piece. So,I thank them for their advice, but encourage them to know whereof they speak before prescribing cures.

MAYBE I'M CRAZY, BUT...

...I go to the theater hoping that I will learn something new. I go praying that the playwright will inform my world, change my opinion, enlighten me, cause me to think, open my mind and heart. But it seems that some critics go to the theater only to validate their own predetermined opinion. What a loss for them! And what a loss for their readers.

BACK TO THE RAVES...

So, all in all, I am happy to report that we have a HIT on our hands. The tickets for our run here in San Diego are quickly disappearing with many performances already sold out. In fact, the theater has asked us to extend our run by a week and maybe even another week if the actors can all be persuaded to stay.

And my fan mail has been incredible (mostly from older gay men thanking me for speaking for their silence).

Every night we are treated to an audience reaction that is simply amazing. When the play is quiet you can hear a pin drop in the theater. There is no shuffling, no coughing, no one gets up to go to the bathroom. The audience sits in rapt attention and it's remarkable. And then something funny will happen on stage and they explode in laughter and applause. What is going on between audience and show is no less than a miracle.

SENDING LOVE TO ALL OF YOU OUT THERE

So we are grateful and fulfilled which are the best things theater artists can be. We are already looking ahead toward our journey from San Diego to Broadway and for news on that all you need to do is...

STAY TUNED!!!!

Harvey,

Congratulations on the good reviews!!! I cannot wait to see the show. I also really appreciate your professionalism in handling that one bad review. Your response is right on and honest without being mean. I know how an unfavorable review can feel. Yet you put it in context and reveal the source for what it truly is. Thank you for your blog. I've been reading and will certainly continue!!!

Yours,

I really wish you could tour with this cast and bring the show to Portland, Oregon, because that would be my only chance to see it. It sounds AMAZING and I am so happy for your success.

And fuck the critics. Seriously.

as the old saying goes critics are like assholes and everyone has one, But to bluntly say I hate the film and the TV teleplay, then go on rants about why he hates you, that is no reveiw. I never liked the LA Times in general, it's reveiwing of art in general is some what of a lack of any taste. Frist Harvey Kudos...., I loved it had to do a big favor to see it, but it will be worth having to do my friends christmas (ugh!!!) card and party this year......, It is one of my many favorite movies(big Bette fan), and now allot of things made sense do to never knowing the brother had died, which is missing from the movie. I thought the character wwere more true, and yes the uncle never married and movies in with his friend...in the movie it is his lady friend, and in most catholic homes if you weren't married by 30 or 40, you would be an old maid or the uncle who never could find the girl of his dreams, and that was told to me by my mother, and old irish woman from west roxbury, and she was never wrong....ok on somethings...,

But truley you gave life in to characters anyone who sees the show will see some form of their family up there
Once again your genius shines through

congrads....and to hell with the LA times....., now I have a reason when they call to say why I dont want them....

That's great Harvey! I'm so happy for you. Yeah, that's the thing with critics, there is far too much of the ego involved for many to give an accurate account nevertheless a fair judgment. I don’t doubt for a moment that many reviewers have a preconceived notion (even if it’s unconscious) of what they are about to watch. Frankly I believe it is human nature to do this. Clearly some can’t get past this.

I wish you the best success in your (extended!) run!

BRAVO!!!! BRAVO!!!
YOu should be used to hearing that by now, mister! I am so happy for you and the rest of the cast and crew. Richly deserved kudos my friend!! I saw the review that mentioned your "post-Stonewall" attitudes. And you are so right. I hated the condescension in his writing that you had "plenty of time to fix it" before opening on Broadway.
And , I am a regular on another website Goldderby dot com and they are already buzzing about the possible Tony noms this could receive!! ( tois tois tois)
CONGRATULATIONS again!! Thank you for your writing. Not just now but always!

Reading this made my heart swell up for you, Harvey Fierstein. We know as well as you know how very little that one bad apple of a review means in the grand scheme of things. Your work is so much more than your plays and op-ed columns and public appearances. YOU are no less than a miracle!

Thank you for sharing such a giant part of your life with us through these blogs.

I have seen so much of your work and one of the best parts of it is your honesty, an honesty that most people do not have the courage to stand by. You are an amazing writer, an amazing performer and most of all and most importantly an amazing person. Again Congratulations on a work so well done. See You on Broadway!!!

Congratulations on the GREAT reviews, Harvey!
Bravo!
Like I said in my post last night, it's the AUDIENCE that matters.

Let me just say that San Diego couldn't care less what the LAT reviewer thinks. I wasn't going to say anything, but since you brought it up....
I was floored when I read the LAT review last night. It was completely out of bounds, to the point of being offensive. I'm a 37 year woman who attends anywhere from 10 to 15 plays a year with my husband. Regional, Broadway, new, old, whatever. I found his review demeaning and insulting. He truly is the McNutty Professor. His reviews are mostly self-important LECTURES with little value to the general theater-goer. I think he could use a little time off from his job as a critic. Then he could spend more time at his new high-octane West Hollywood health club and spare us the disdainful and derogatory lectures.

There. Got that off my chest.
;-)

KEEP ENTERTAINING THEM AT THE GLOBE! Thanks again for premiering the show here. I hope you can extend the run here so more people can enjoy the great story, music and cast you have assembled. I hope you are enjoying San Diego and getting to spend a little time downtown as well as all the beautiful places up here around La Jolla and Del Mar. I recommend Il Fornaio in Del Mar if you get a chance.

Cheers!

You know what? It's been my experience that people generally think for themselves and one bad review isn't going to keep them away from the show. Congratulations Harvey! Once again, you've touched so many lives and opened so many minds. As for the nay-sayers, time is the great equalizer. Like you, I investigate and learn before I speak and try to present the facts in as unbiased a way as possible. Truth is a precious commodity, it can be painful and overwhelming but "for those with the eyes to see the truth will be revealed". Turning away from the harsh realities doesn't make them go away, it only gives one a false sense of security. We must never become complacent, we must always fight for truth and justice and we must make our voices heard loud and clear.
Thank you for fighting the good fight and take solace in the knowledge that your battle scars are shared by all of us who strive to find the truth. Much love to you and yours. I know you'll take Broadway by storm!

I am happy for you and the cast that the play and performances got good reviews. We all love praise and adoration. I know I do. Especialy when it is deserved after working so hard. Although, I personally do not need a critic to tell me if a play is worth seeing. I could care less what any critic has to say about any play or movie. I wish I could get paid to write my opinions about plays and movies I have seen. But, that's all it would be. My opinion. There are so many plays and movies that I absolutely love that have been dissed by critics. There are plays and movies that I thought were absolutely horrible, but were praised by critics. I realize that reviews are one of the many faces that play a part in the show buisness world. In my world it is a face that has been edited and left laying on the floor to be swept up and put into the trash. But, then again. That's just my opinion.

The only reviews I ever cared about when I was doing plays was at curtain call. The applause told me everything I need to know. And the feeling I got from that was worth more than any words a critic could ever write.

I wish you continued joy and success my friend. Live it. Love it. Lavish it.

Peace. Love. Blessings.

We were captivated last night by the performance of CATERED AFFAIR. It was just amazing. The whole cast is great! Tom Wopats "I stayed" where he throws the chair was so incredibly moving. We were blown away by your performance, which was no surprise. You scared us for a sec, cause it seemed like you were going to fall of the couch during "Immediate Family", all part of the act I'm sure. And Faith Prince was so incredibly captivating, and emotionally gripping. What a beautiful woman! I can't remember crying and laughing so much in such a single performance. Thank you and your fellow performers so much for such and memorable night for us. It was the best birthday present ever. We will never forget it!

I recently watched the documentary "Show Business" and in it I saw a group of critics hoping for the demise of shows, talking trash, and generally using their own bias to determine the worth of a theatrical piece. These same critics then were bemoaning the early demise of the same shows they trashed. I have also been in a production where the review started with "As someone who is not a fan of musicals......" Bias before the doors ever opened. Theater is too personal for each viewer to bother with the bile spewed by the critics. By supporting the arts (whatever art form you love) we prove wrong the critics and are able to see the works of amazing artists.
On a personal note, I have been a fan of Your work for at least two decades. Please never listen to the critics and keep turning out uncompromising art.

I'm glad to hear that the show is so wonderful.

I have been a hugh fan of John Bucchino since the age of 5. He was my eldest brother's best friend growning up and his brother was one of my closest pals.

John has always had a way of making the most beautiful, haunting, and achingly poignant music.

I hope to track him down next week when I'm in NYC to run the marathon.

Continued success with the show.

Kindest regards,
