Apologies in Order

If you mix the components of sex and celebrity,

It forms the perfect remedy for credit crunch therapy,

Add to that a scandal mishandled, so an editor's angle,

Is to form a loving triangle,

A salacious fandango,

Little Britain needs someone to be made an example,

So the critical factors surrounding the bawdiest of banter,

Over "Who slept with who", "Who said what",

Is now a political matter(?)

In Parliamentary chapters,

MP's examine trashy insults,

The wagon circle's full of actors,

Who'll join the band and indulge?

Until the final pin drops,

It's getting colder outside,

It's getting darker much earlier,

Are you taking me for a ride?

I know that drama sells papers,

Whether envisioned or inflated,

The media merry-go-round,

Has come to your town,

As a scapegoated crown is created,

The only glitch in the matrix,

Is that the economy still ain't fixed,

Recession will probably hit,

Unless you've clocked a lottery win,

So honestly then,

If "drama" pays the rent,

Why do you think that outrageous behaviour is the flavour?

It oils the machine from within,

So let's apologise for schoolboy attacks,

But who apologises for going into Iraq?

Who apologises for a mother's cry over a son who's never coming back?

Since apologies are called for, let's not veer from the track,

Who apologises for troop deployment?

A disabled soldier's unemployment,

What's worse: "A bridge too far" or "A joke too far"

Bad political judgement or pop culture enjoyment?

So apologise for dumb pranks,

But apologise for dumber tanks,

Apologise for the cost of a dumb war which crumbled our banks,

If all the world is a stage,

And its clowns now have you enraged,

Think about the apologies never given,

Which turn playgrounds into graves,

Yo, G a message from T!

You keep on keeping on and style and flow just continues to grow.

Saw you in 'into the hoods' and was proud say I'd shared a stage with ya!

Exactly what many of us think but no-one else could have put it quite like that. Reading your poem has released the tears of rage that have been building up since Monday. How could this have been the lead NEWS story all week when thousands can't afford to heat their homes this winter? It's a disgrace that ANY politician saw fit to get involved when the country faces REAL crises.
Tabloid hysteria has always angered me but the fact that the bullies won on this occassion is completely unfathomable...and now our guaranteed weekly laugh is gone, along with any BBC broadcaster's freedom to stray a little from the herd.
Powerful words, Mr Gee.

Much respect,
D x

argh so true!!! This is a brilliant poem, made me think of "London" by Blake. It has become obvious that many people are just brainwashed into false conciousness and don't realise this has become so hyped up because the government wants us distracted from REAL ISSUES!I'm gonna miss your weekly poems Mr Gee!!

Best of luck to you, Matt, Russell and the team!! Viva La Revolution!!! (haha!)

Absolutely brilliant ! You've hit the nail on the head. In the US, Fox news (republican TV station) does stories on anything BUT the war and the crappy economy in order to distract/entertain the masses. The newspaper/tabloids in the UK seem to be doing the same thing here with poor Ol'Russ. His resignation video was the most depressing thing I've seen in a long time. Thanks for posting this!

Great poem, Mr Gee, I salute you! The lazy journalists, (not to mention the even lazier politicians) that rule the minds of the masses in this country may see Russell and his show as an easy target, and may take great delight in pouncing on one, at worst, foolish misguided moment of juvenility on-air to please their ignorant slavering followers. What they have done however is take away from us a genuinely exciting, edgy, funny and intelligent radio show full of genuine talent. And meanwhile, the poor defenseless victim of this "vile" (The Daily Mail's choice of vocabulary, not my own) crime is plastered all over The Sun with three inches of make up on and her tits hanging out. (Georgina Baillie, that is, not her grandfather...). Angry? Yes I am.
