HOMEBAKE 2006 The Second & Final Announcement The Future At The ..Party In The Park..
With a sell out faster than the proverbial ..speeding bullet.. we here at HOMEBAKE HQ are slightly daunted (if not shocked) with the incredible support shown by all HOMEBAKE fans en masse. It certainly proves to be a healthy and positive indication of the interest towards our internationally recognised local industry. And for this reason, we have decided that this next announcement will focus on a selection of brilliantly awesome and exceptionally talented new bands that herald the future of music created from the southern hemisphere. In amongst the new, there..s a dash of the established, however all in all, this next announcement forms closure to the biggest, and most exciting HOMEBAKE we..ve managed to create for 2006. With that said (& bold statements aside), we ask you to prepare yourselves to be introduced or re-introduced to..
2006 has been a busy year for Melbourne three piece Something for Kate. After an 18 month hiatus where singer & guitarist Paul Dempsey, bassist Stephanie Ashworth and drummer Clint Hyndman carefully constructed the songs for their new album, the band has emerged with a new dynamic both on record and at their live shows. Earlier this year SFK completed their 5th studio album ..Desert Lights.. which debuted at number one nationally. ..Cigarettes and Suitcases.. .. which was the first single taken from the album - signalled a fresh and decidedly more guitar based sound for the new record. Their sold-out ..Sci-Fi Sunsets.. national tour in May and June gave fans a taste of the new album and re-established Something for Kate as one of the county..s most engaging live acts. Something for Kate will play a collection of tunes from their ..Desert Lights.. album along with some much loved back catalogue favourites and a few surprises when they take to the stage at this year..s HOMEBAKE Festival!
The Vines were one of the leading lights of the Great Rock and Roll Renaissance of 2002 and since then it..s been a well documented rollercoaster ride for this Sydney band. Having been away from the live arena for two years The Vines made an amazing surprise return earlier this year with a cracker performance at The Splendour In The Grass festival. They then went on to sell out shows in Sydney and Melbourne in record time. Well and truly cemented back in the scene with their new album ..Vision Valley.. The Vines look forward to what will be a rare live performance when they hit the stage for a very special HOMEBAKE performance this year!
They..ve opened for profile internationals such as Gomez, new wave veterans The Psychedelic Furs and The Music, and wheels really started turning as the offer came to work with legendary songwriter and producer Harry Vanda (Easybeats, AC/DC, Rose Tattoo). Just a year from finishing school and playing their first gigs British India found themselves in Flashpoint studio, playing Harry Vanda..s guitars, meeting music business legends and soaking up history. The resulting EP ..We Are The Counter Culture.. has garnered strong reviews and strong airplay. British India will set tongues wagging as they exhibit their high voltage energy at HOMEBAKE 2006!
Children Collide are exactly how they seem, they're not trying to be anything else. They..re a pair of art inspired experimental grunge fans, who hitchhiked from Lismore to Melbourne a few years back, in search of the great Australian rock n roll dream. With a UK 7" single under their belts and 2005's six track EP, 'We Three Brave and True', Children Collide have been attracting some big names to their shows, including Sire Records President Seymour Stein who flew out from the United States to Australia to see them. Much like their influences, Children Collide play raw over-driven rock that bleeds old school grunge riffs, coupled with infectious pop melodies and catchy, albeit insightful lyrics. They infect audiences with an insentient bite, leaving their indie rocker victims with an incurable addiction. Make sure you take the ride with Children Collide when they join in at HOMEBAKE. Connecting the musical dots between Auckland, Chicago, New York City, and London, Die! Die! Die! are one of the best bands to emerge from New Zealand in over a decade. With an emphasis on pummelling, primal garage-punk rhythms shot through with shard-like guitar work, Die! Die! Die! create a driving sound highly reminiscent of Warsaw, Therapy? and Wire that is utterly immediate and visceral, melodic and danceable. They recorded their debut album with Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Shellac) at his studio in Chicago in the summer of 2005, before heading to the UK and Sweden. Concurrently, the band released their debut eponymous six-track EP, recorded with Dale Cotton (HDU, Dimmer), in New Zealand. Having recently toured the US as sole support to Aussie compatriots Wolfmother and a stunning debut at March 2006's SXSW Festival, the band was offered a high profile residency in New York City in August 2006 that generated a massive amount of industry buzz. Die! Die! Die! then toured the UK to rave reviews from NME, Kerrang!, DisOrder and many others in support of their first UK single, in August-September this year. The band's new EP, ..Locust Weeks.., is being released in Australia this November, Be prepared for a blast from Die! Die! Die! as they discharge their new material at HOMEBAKE this year.
They..ve supported Franz Ferdinand, The Shins, Youthgroup, the Zutons as well as The Cops. Currently riding the highways with The Living End on a massive national tour, Sydney four piece Red Riders are laying the foundations for the release of their debut album ..Replica Replica... Produced by Woody Annison (Pound System, Rocket Science) their debut album sees release on October 21. Expect nothing short of infectious up beat rock from these young highly spirited Sydney youngsters as they join the HOMEBAKE fold! 2005 began with their biggest shows to date opening for Powderfinger on their national tour as well as a spot on the Big Day Out. The multi-talented Ground Components return to the HOMEBAKE fold this year with an elaborate release under their belts. ..An Eye for a Brow, A Tooth for a Pick.. is the first full length release from the band which sees them explore and enjoy their diverse musical influences and features a stylistic departure in one of it..s highlight tracks ..Coming In All From All Angles.. which sees them pair up with fellow HOMEBAKE performer, Sydney MC, Macromantics. It..s impossible to fit Ground Components into a neat, single genre box, there is familiarity with no obvious comparisons. Expect Ground Components to reference many styles and sounds when they perform at HOMEBAKE 2006!
Rising beyond his role as the front-man of the wildly successful 1200 Techniques, N..fa is no stranger to success. The ARIA-winning 1200 Techniques sold over 50,000 albums and captivated audiences with their edgy, raw performances all around the nation. Now, with 1200 Techniques in hiatus, N..fa has channelled his unique talents into his debut solo album ..Cause An Effect.. Evolving and adding to the proven success of his unique hip-hop formula, ..Cause An Effect.. takes the listener on a journey of light and shade as it presents hook-laden anthems alongside smooth, reclining rhythms. N..fa has collaborated with producers and MCs from the US, UK, Korea, New Zealand and Australia including, Roots Manuva, Mr Yoshiaki (Black Eyed Peas), Peril and Deceptikonz (Dawn Raid Entertainment). To complete the picture, Hollywood superstar Heath Ledger was enlisted to direct the videos for the title track .. ..Cause an Effect.. and second single ..Seduction Is Evil... N..fa will certainly be causing an effect when he helps create the party in the park at HOMEBAKE this year!
Rising out of the booming Central Coast punk scene in 2001 and signing to indie upstart Below Par Records, Something With Numbers have grown from a branded ..emo punk.. band to a full-blown rock and roll powerhouse. In simple words, their latest release ..Perfect Distraction.. is a pop record at heart. The eleven songs that make it up are as diverse as they are unique. It..s arguably the band..s masterpiece. Something With Numbers have been together four years are still all in their early twenties; they..re a band that has performed with hordes of international acts including Good Charlotte, Millencolin, The Ataris, and shared festival bills with White Stripes, The Used, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jurassic Five, Linkin Park and Killswitch Engage. Expect nothing short of a full tilt rock set from Something With Numbers at HOMEBAKE this year.
It has been said that The Basics represent the past, the present and the future of music, but only time will tell. Sure its kinda 60..s. Sure it..s Beatlesy. But sure enough, when The Basics are singing about love and loss it..s a story that belongs to everyone and everyone belongs to, young or old, proven by the support they..ve had from a cross-section of renowned Australian artists such as Paul Kelly, The Cat Empire and Jeff Lang. The Basics comprising Wally de Backer (who also produces music under the name ..Gotye.. who is also performing at HOMEBAKE), Kris Schroeder and Tim Heath will showcase their swag of intensely catching, thoughtfully arranged and universally appealing songs at The Party In The Park come December 2 when HOMEBAKE arrives in town!
Hailing from Sydney..s Western Suburbs, this young five piece has already made an impression on the local music scene. Their road to discordant rock 'n' punk started with a five track EP titled ..Regrets & Hollow Threats.. recorded in July this year. The Vaine loaded the tracks on to MySpace and since then they haven..t looked back, playing punchy performances and building an ample fan base along the way. Their introduction to HOMEBAKE's festival stages is a unique story in itself, however stories aside, they will be the envy of their friends come December 2nd, Look out for The Vaine at HOMEBAKE with what is sure to be a knock out performance from these Sydney youngsters who formed in a shed in January this year.
Their reputation as a gang of rogues intent on forging their own little original sound has been cemented with their new EP ..Damn & Damn Again.. displaying a band perfectly at ease with combining a shuddering shit storm of rattling hi-hats and punk intensity with ambient sound scapes and noise drenched melodies. The new tracks perfectly blend The Valentino..s need for experimentation with their love of torching the dance floor. They..ve toured with the UK..s Johnny Boy and The Church on their national tour. Now The Valentino..s are well positioned to deliver a solid set at this years HOMEBAKE Festival.
Mountains in the Sky have returned with their second collection of magical sonic tone poems, entitled ..Accipio... Main mountain man John Lee has an uncanny knack for cutting, splicing, playing and twitching music. Whether it..s collating and configuring samples from scores of second hand records or playing a dazzling array of instruments, John..s there and on the money. The Mountains in the Sky live show often becomes a jam session in its own right. John is joined on stage by Stuart McFarlane and depending on their mood can make 3 songs last the length of a set or belt out a concise beat driven party vibe. We welcome Mountains In The Sky to the HOMEBAKE arena!
While it took Tom Cooney until his early 20s to start singing and writing songs, his musical inclinations were first piqued when he was 12. Falling to sleep at night, his neighbour would play classical guitar on his back deck and the sounds would filter through the trees into Tom's room. That man became Tom's guitar tutor, teaching him classical and flamenco guitar. It..s an influence which carries through to this day. Nearing the end of his life as a student the loss of his first love drove him to write and the fruits of his labour will be realised soon with the release of his first EP. This Brisbane based top independent storytelling talent is set to present his hauntingly beautiful vocals to the masses at HOMEBAKE this year.
Originally from Adelaide and now residing in Sydney, Jen Cloher and The Endless Sea arrived on the scene in April last year with a single ..Rain.. which touched the nerves of many a discerning music lover. The track made it to number two on Triple J..s Net 50 and scored a spot on their Home and Hosed compilation. They..ve performed three national tours as well as support slots for key acts such as Ben Lee, Mia Dyson, Tex Perkins, Paul Dempsey, Pete Murray, Alex Lloyd and Miss Higgins. Mid this year Jen Cloher and The Endless Sea released their highly acclaimed debut album ..Dead Wood Falls... Capturing the beauty of their live performances for which they..ve built a strong reputation this act has well impressed critics, peers and fans alike. We welcome Jen Cloher and The Endless Sea to the stage at HOMEBAKE this year!
Marcomantics is Melbourne based Australian rapper Romy Hoffman who originally entered the music world with Ben Lee..s first band ..Noise Addict... Macromantics discovered hip hop on a US tour with the band and on returning to Australia she picked up a microphone and the rest as they say is history! She..s been hailed as the ..princess of Australian beats and rhymes.. and her album ..Moments In Movement.. is as much an album for fans of pop culture as it is for hip hop kids. Macromantics will bring her fresh hip hop flavours to HOMEBAKE come December 2.
The Whiskey Go Go..s were born and driven by front-man Matt Hutchinson. Born and raised in the mission fields, he spent over 16 years travelling the world with his mother. They didn't stay in one country for longer than 2 years, and then... off again. The lifestyle of a missionary, a lifestyle so rare to come by, is a lifestyle that scripted the tales and material for the dandiest southern rock outfit to come out this side of Mississippi. Matt Hutchinson returned home to Victoria, Australia in 2002 after spending a total of 11 years on the road in the USA. He teamed up with another missionary kid (Johnny Ahearne) and together started writing & recording the debut album ..Roadhouse.. at the Benjamin Fox Studios. After completing the record, Matt Hutchinson put together his live act and started gigging through the city of Melbourne. A mouthful of high-energy, good old time southern rock & roll is the taste on they're tongue. Matt & his Whiskey Go Go..s hit HOMEBAKE for their very first festival outing.
Originally born in Perth, this four-piece has recently moved to Sydney spending time ingratiating themselves upon audiences up and down the East Coast captivating audiences as they performed as special guests to Peabody, Art of Fighting, Dungen , The Mountain Goats and with Wolfmother on their sold out national tour. Their deliciously twisted ..Bish Bosh II: The Bosh Bosh.. album, saw them described as ..the biggest pack of whackos to wander onto the Australian music scene in a long time... With a new album ..Chubby.. out now Tucker B..s are intense, dense, dynamic, simple, free, angry, bright, literate, illegitimate, arranged, confused, harsh, urban, gentle, rural, warm, cold, distant but don..t take our word for it, be there when Tucker B..s deliver what will be a staggering set at HOMEBAKE..s Party In The Park this year.
Adelaide..s Wolf & Cub have had a busy time of it since they hooked up some years back. The band have shared stages with TV On The Radio, The Killers, The Music, Wolfmother, Queens of the Stone Age, Hot Hot Heat, Futureheads and Death From Above 1979.. they have toured relentlessly both offshore in the UK & Japan and nationwide playing their own headline shows including their recent album tour for their debut CD ..Vessels... We can assure you that Wolf & Cub mercifully fail to sit politely in any pre-ordained pigeonhole and refuse to acknowledge any musical boundaries. Check out what is sure to be a blistering set from these South Australians at HOMEBAKE this year!
And to top this most finest of line-up..s will be the announcement of Triple J..s lucky Unearthed winner and the Hopetoun Hotel incentive competition winner, both of whom will enjoy the trappings of HOMEBAKE 2006. Stay tuned for details regarding the announcement of both these future stars in the making.
