How have you been doing?? I know I've been MIA. Two reasons: 1-- I got diagnosed with Lyme disease so I've been feeling really wiped out and under the weather (straight to bed after work every day!). 2-- Since you started school, I figured you wouldn't even notice if I laid low. It's amazing how a little tick (I probably got a tick bite in the Hamptons early this summer) can totally take you down. Tick -- 1; Atoosa -- 0!

Things at Seventeen have been really great. We started a cool partnership with Top Model; we helped launch an internet safety program with Myspace (as you know, a very important topic); we're the only teen magazine in the country to be growing (everyone else is selling less issues than last year or they're out of business); and we just -- thanks to you -- raised over $20,000 for breast cancer research with a celebrity hand bag auction. This is all good, right?

Yet people on blogs (nameless, faceless people of course) are so nasty about me. Something that ran today on Gawker made me want to reach out to you. I often tell you hang on -- that high school is this weird time when people are immature and that when you get into the "real world" you can just focus on being yourself without worrying about the petty high school crap. And then something like this gets printed:

From our venerable mailbag, a late-breaking development in the whirlwind career of Seventeen editor and self-promoting working girl Atoosa Rubenstein:

To: Gawker
From: Disgusted Tipster
Subj: Orchids don't have hairy arms

Just finished watching America's Next Top Model with none other than their special guest star Atoosa Rubenstein. Could one of you please investigate her grotesque forearms post-haste? Looks like The 'Toos has serious issues with some thick, black arm hair. Mind you, we all have hair on our arms -I personally wax mine - but isn't she the editor of a beauty magazine? And, furthermore, she was a judge on a modeling show. This was actual man hair. I regretted for a moment having HD tv... It was really gross.

Sympathetic nods to Rubenstein's ethnicity aside -- does anyone have a picture of this? We stopped watching Top Model after Eva Pigford won and started whoring around with Missy Elliot (for some reason, that destroyed the purity of the competition for us), so we've no visual evidence or DVR material for investigating the above claim. If you have any photos or even first-hand accounts of Rubenstein's body hair, do drop us a line. Go ahead, send us anything. When looking to support or refute claims of forearm shrubbery, our bar for evidence is remarkably low.

I won't lie and say this silly stuff doesn't bother me, but after about a minute I remember my dedication to our mission and I stay focused on that. But it DOES make me feel badly for the people who feel compelled to say this kind of thing about someone they don't know. It must be lonely to be an anonymous, bitter person who comes out from under a rock every so often to throw rocks at people who are legitimately out there, working hard and getting results. Believe me, the rocks may sometimes annoy me but imagine how much it sucks to be on the other side??

I wish instead of creating an outlet for their anonymous bitterness, someone would create an outlet to help them HEAL because who would choose to be this way if they could? Maybe one of you will do that -- or maybe one of us. I feel very blessed to use my microphone to spread good energy. This is a reminder though that instead of always working my butt off, I should make time to get my arms waxed! The truth is, I let it slip. Haha.

As always, thanks for being there and being you. Without you, there wouldn't be us :)

feel better, Atoosa!

It's really stupid when people tease others or say rude comments. Even if they don't mean to. And I'm not saying that people should walk on egg shells -- I know I dont! -- but they should be conscientious of others. That's all I have to say.

Thanks, 'Toosa!

I think thats stupid and annoying for someone who spends their time talking about others without knowing them I mean whoever was that person that said those ugly stuff about you Attosa must be jealous or probably she herself doesn't even wax either HA! but anyways I agree thats kinda so much similar to High School Drama and all that but oh well like some of my friends tell me there will be alot of people that will always judge you,but Now I really dont care at all I could care less what people think about me, it really doesn't bother me at all anyways I think the best thing is just being yourself and that only matters ;)

You are extremely mature in the way you are handling the situation. These poeple obviously feel the need to make you feel bad. Probably because you are successful, the way they WISH the could be. Well continue doing what you are doing, you were great on America's Next Top Model.....and you show people to feel comfortable in their own skin, thats ALL that matters.

Omg I too have hairy arms, I hate it!
People tell me to wax or shave my arms but I refuse to do that. I may not like having hairy arms but if they were my real friends they wouldn't make me feel so bad about having hairy arms!
I hate wearing shirts that show my arms because I feel as if people are looking and making fun of my arms, it drives me crazy!
Hmmm maybe I shouldn't focus my mind so much on my arms, then maybe I won't feel as bad.
Thanks for sharing your story with us!
I always learn something new from you! =D

Hey Atoosa,
I know what a problem gossip can be and how hurtful it really is. That's why at our school we started a program called NCBI- National Coalition Building Institute. IT helps build diverstiy awareness and informs people of the person behind the person you see. It tells our students to be more open minded and aware of a person's personal lives. After we presented this workshop to our school, everyone seemed like one big happy family. THe event is very emotional so even months afterwards I saw people hanging out with people they hadn't before and comforting each other. It was soooo amazing to see how much high school students could actually care. This was last year and since then I have been trained to lead the workshops at our school this year and I am really excited about it!!! I hope that one day everyone could be free of judgements and gossip and unhapiness. This is a great program and I also think it may be cool to write about in your magazine!! Thanks soooo much for being such an inspiring role model!!!!

Well for one, this anonymous person must have quite the sad and boring existence if she's got the time to stare at your arms on her high definition tv....

Two, Seventeen is sooo much more than a beauty magazine. It's about life. It's an outlet for the girls who read it. So obviously she doesn't know her stuff.

Three, you're the one ON America's Next Top Model, running the best teen magazine out there, making a difference and so much more. When you're that on top, people need something to pick on. They can't stand those who are successful. So in other words, you to it goin' on!!!! Woot!

Do your thing Atoosa. You're impacting us in ways you can't even begin to understand.

I'm so glad that you posted this bulletin. I'm a freshman this year and some of the people who I thought were my friends, have been talking about me behind my back and I found out from some people who actually are my friends. It was about my boyfriend and I, and just about me. And I'm not going to say it didn't bother me, because it did. It even hurt my boyfriend who was supposedly their friend also. BUT, atleast now I know who my real friends are and who are the fake ones.

just look at the people supporting you!! that should tell you enough--people like those are the ugliest of all, which sounds like some sappy moral to a 2nd grade story, but its really TRUE. those kind of people arent sincerely liked by ANYONE, and you ARE. youve got friends supporting you, and they would never have anyone watching out for them. when the day is done, how nice you are is what really matters. think about it--have you ever really liked someone for how PRETTY they were? no! you like them because they might inspire you, or they have a relaxed personality. everyone will encounter those kind of people, but every day just know that you ARE above them, and walk with pride. that person is just plain out rude, inconsiderate, and, well, that big fat B word. =) and that is ALL! *whew*

People honestly need to grow up. It's quite pathetic how people have to stoop so low and try to bring such a fantastic person down to their level; well to their surprise IT ISNT WORKING. I'm Italian and probably have a lot more body hair than you do hahaha. Too make such a big deal out of "body hair" is rather childish - Sure it seems like high school drama all over again, but come on now, their way of approaching it through a blog seems very middle schoolish too me.
I've had people be very nasty too me in my school years but you have to remind yourself that you're better than that.

Hell, you help every girl in America remind themselves every month that they're beautiful. I'm still thinking of a way where we all could reach out to you and make you feel just as pretty as you make us feel :)

If you haven't seen it you should go rent it the episode! Everyone talks about us but honestly if she's going to say something about hairy arms? What about a beautiful, loving, successful woman? And so what, maybe you do have hairy arms? This woman is too self conscious so she waxes them. Good for her, but better for you for being confident and knowing you're beautiful :)

Wow Atoosa,
Personally, I think it's really sad that people have enough time to just sit around and think up ugly, hurtful things to say about people. I mean, who does that, especially on the internet? That jerk really needs to get a life and stop bashing people who actually have real lives! I would tell you not to let things like that get to you, but I'm completely the same way. I know I shouldn't let hurtful things like that get to me, but it's just human nature to want to be liked by everyone. But seriously, try to overlook those kinds of people; they probably weren't raised right anyway! Much love!

So if you feel like talking about it you can IM me. I find you very inspiring and the magazine gives me something to look forward to every month. If people have nothing better to do than to look for details the average person wouldn't notice, then they aren't worth your time. Don't let other people steal your happiness.

I could honestly care less about what others say about me.
I'm a living, breathing, existing individual just like the rest of us. Anything negative said about me can easily be applied to whoever is saying it. We're all capable of having certain qualities and doing certain things or acting a certain way, but I think it is those who are truely frightened of that concept that choose to lash out at it just because it may be unusual.
Other than face time or attention, I don't think I'd benefit from pointing out peoples' imperfections. It's a waste of everyone's time and energy.
I have friends of all colors, shapes, and sizes, and I accept them for who they are, despite apparent imperfections. We're all human.

Keep inspiring everyone you come into contact with, Atoosa.
You'll change lives.

No matter what age you are, the truth is, being who you are, is whats beautiful. Who cares what we look like, the most important things are how much we love, care and understand. It's whats on the inside not the outside that matters. It doesnt matter who you are "Atoosa" or what type of job position you hold "Editor", its about the person that you truely are inside. People that attack ones appearance only do so because they can't find anything bad to say about who you are as a person. You do wonderful things, like fund-raising, and you care about your readers and you are involved 110% in the work you do at Seventeen. They can't find anything negative to say about you, so they chose something as petty as armhair to pick on. I am sorry that people, no matter what age, continue to do so. I am 29 and I have seen way too many people around my age be petty and full of high school drama. I believe that some people just thrive on making other people miserable, and it is usually because they are miserable themselves.

So here is what I have to say to Disgusted Tipster:

"Give me a break!" Stop picking on people and stupid things and start worrying about world peace or something. Find a better way to channel your negativity and leave good people like Atoosa alone!

Peiple in this world really need to grow up and realize that gossip like that hurts people, and in the long run, just makes themselves look bad. I really hope that you don't let things such as this ruin your day because you are a beautiful person and the person that wrote this must just be jealous.
