Current mood:  curious

So what do you think about the whole Miss New Jersey sexy-photo scandal?

In case you didn't know about it, read this:

http://www.nypost.com/seven/07132007/news/regionalnews/vanilla_miss_n_j__blackmail_pix_regionalnews_jeane_macintosh.htm

A group calling themselves the "Committee to Save Miss America" sent some wild pictures from her (private) Facebook page to pageant officials in an attempt to take her crown away.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The officials let her keep the title.

Do you agree with their decision?

I'm always interested in hearing your opinion.

As for me, I think it's fine to let her keep the title. Sure, her pictures were silly and raunchy – but she's a young girl being goofy with her friends (and boyfriend). If I were her though, I would have been way more careful with what I chose to put online even though her page is "private." Nothing is private online. We all need to remember that.

If you don't want a future employer (or mother-in-law – lol!) seeing something, don't put it online. (And yes –this applies to you even if you're still in high school – once something's on the internet, it will be there forever.) Seems obvious but look what happened to this girl. Even though she got to keep her crown, her dignity got dragged through the dirt – how embarrassing. These pics were shown on the Today show and in every major newspaper across America. She should have been more careful knowing that she's entering a pageant and that world can be very conservative. But frankly, I can't think of one employer who would look at pics like this and feel good about hiring her for a job. Just food for thought. Whether we like it or not, people are judgmental.

Just don't want you to find out the hard way.

Have a great weekend, pretty Kitty! Oh, last weekend I saw that movie, "1408." If you're in the mood to be scared-to-death, SEE IT! I screamed my head off (I swear, I'm not that type, but I could NOT control it). It's perfect for tonight: Friday, the 13th….boo!

xx

I think those pictures aren't too bad, sure they are a little wild...but they aren't too dirty. it's not like she's naked or having sex or something. She's obviously just having fun.

i totally agree with you Atoosa. she is a young girl just acting goofy. i mean, atleast the pictures didnt involve nudity. and sure, like she said, the pictures were private so they should have stayed that way but it was her decision to have them on facebook and she owns up to that mistake.

Personally Atoosa,
Im glad that you posted this blog, beacasue I had not heard of this story yet.Since reading it thought, I dont think that she should be able to keep her title. When i think of miss america, it is someone who is well rounded, and smart, and modest. These pictures are everything but modest, they are raunchy. I undesrstand having fun, but no one should have pictures like theses posted,,epspecially not miss america teen or wutever!

yes i do.
the pics are not that bad like you said, she is a young girl, being goofy. But she should have known that posting those up on the internet would mean they would get leaked to the media. Every site can get hacked into. Myspaces get hacked into alot.
but i like that she keep her crown, because considering how racey other pics of other pageant winners, and contestants from American Idol. these were not that bad.

Those pictures are just a silly college girl having fun with her friends. They are slightly dirty, but mostly just playful. I would have been angry if they took her title away because of it. I could understand if it was pornographic, but they're not even close.

Although I do agree, if it's something that you wouldn't want you're future bosses or mother-in-law seeing, you probably shouldn't post it.

I think it was fine for her to keep the title, but it's HER bad for putting herself out there in such a way. Something I realized when I was an officer for certain college organizations... people are watching you. Once you have any kind of title, you're in the eye of everyone around you. They want to see you fail. And even if you think you're just having a good time, pictures like these are just what people want to find to bring you down.

I believe someone once said, "With great power comes great responsibility." Hmmm....

While she is a young woman and having fun, one can still be appropriate...or at least maek sure that stuff does not get on the Internet.
I always make sure to scan my photos and maintain strict privacy settings because being successful is important to me and if employers of my dream job see something and then don't hire me because of it - that's something I could've prevented.
I feel like you need to take control of that sort of thing if you want to be professional.

When I saw her on the news and she said these photos were meant to be private, I felt bad for her and wondered who would try to blackmail her.

THEN I heard they got the pictures from her facebook acount! And I laughed. I'm sorry, but it's her own fault for posting those pictures online. Even if you have a "private" account, if you have a lot of friends, people are going to see the photos. Why are you posting pictures of yourself you find embarrasing?

I agree with the decision to allow Ms. New Jersey to keep her crown. Those pictures were her just being silly and you can see it. I don't understand how anyone can get offended by that.
However, the other pagent girls that recently been exposed...their pictures WERE way too provocative. I know better than to put pictures of myself licking a breast or trying to hump someone else online. But see, I don't even do those things when drunk.
If my friends were the ones posting them, I would be mad especially if they know I am running for something as important as Ms. Teen America or Ms. America.
Anyways, I will have a good weekend. It is the Central Pennsylvania Arts Festival. It's the biggest thing around here this weekend and all my friends are coming back! I haven't seen them in months!
The pictures are adorable too!!

I don't know, I mean of course she's a teenage college chic having fun. But why did she need to post those pictures. If you go into a beauty pageant for anything your expected to be a good role model. And i would never want my little sister or brother looking up to her thinking it's okay for a boy to chew on your boob or to open your legs with a bunch of boys. I don't want someone like her representing all teenage college girls or teenage girls in general. Iono. =]]

Although I think she should've used better judgment, I don't think the pictures are bad enough to get her crown taken away. It just looked like a girl having fun with her friends, even though it is sort of dirty.
Then again, some girls look up to Miss America, and Miss New Jersey, for that matter. I bet she lost her role model status in some people's eyes.

I hope this will be a lesson to everyone that just because a page is private, or photos shown or sent to select people doesn't mean they won't end up other places. I know girls who are still haunted from similar photos from a few years ago. I think it was all harmless young people being silly, maybe even a little raunchy. I wish Miss New Jersey good luck with everything.

I totally agree that it seems every girl, pageant or no, has something not so pretty in her past. It's all about what you take from that situation and if you can turn it into something positive. I mean, it's pretty ironic that her campaign was for teaching kids internet safety. In some ways, it could be a blessing in disguise. She now has a personal experience that demonstrates that private is never really private. I hope she can make the best of these bad experience. She made a mistake, but she deserves a chance to turn it around.

Hey Atoosa! Thanks for this blog post. I had not yet heard this story so I was glad to hear it. I think the photos were a bit out-there... but after all she is just a young woman having a goofy time with her friends. Everybody has those times, though she shouldn't have posted it on a "private" page on the internet. I also think they made the right decsion in allowing her to keep the title. She has no reason to be punished that severely for basically just being a young woman.

And i SO wanna see 1408! Me and my two friend watch scary movies pretty much everytime we have a sleepover. We've seen so many horror films that we're used to them by now and rarely ever get scared. We've been trying to find a movie that will actually scare us and i think this might be the one :) I'll probably see it this sunday

Cute photos Atoosa. The people you surround yourself with look like very good energy.

As for this big scandal, I don't think it is fair to try to take her title. Honestly, I am sure every girl has a few of those photos around that they aren't proud of, but it's all apart of growing up. I do agree with you about how future employers see you. I never believed it untill I went job hunting.

The whole thing seems kind of ridiculous. She is not taking part in any illegal or harmful activity, so I don't think the photos are serious enough to put her title in question. But she should also know better than to have pictures like that online at all. Even if her Facebook profile is private, all of the pictures are still visible to everyone on her friends list.

heyy atoosa.

i have been following this story since the day it went public. i've been watching miss america for as far as i can remember. The women who hold such titles are strong, confident, and represent the women of this great nation, and with that comes the adjective "imperfect". As humans we;ve all made silly decisions and havent always thought them through. Im glad they didnt take away her crown because she deserved it, and she deserves it ten times more for not backing down to a pack of judgemental wolverines aka "Committee to Save Miss America." The pictures may havent been the classiest pictures but they certainly werent the worst i've seen.

miss new jersey along with the other young ladies holding a state's title are all ALPHA KITTIES!
and again we unite!

You know, I find it really sad that this is what young girls have to look up to as role models....I personally think that they should of taken the title away to make a statement, being that this is not the right thing to do, this is unacceptable, and that we need to be more lady like, and not treat ourselves in such a manner of disrespect. Are we all to become like Miss New Jersey or Miss Universe....known for being slutty, and treating ourselves like a piece of meat....something needs to change, and I think the time is now! I think I might run for Miss Colorado just to make a point to young girls that you don't have to treat yourself in such a way to be beautiful, or well known. Modesty is the best policy.....

I think that the pictures are definitely raunchy. What kind of attention does she want by posting those pics up on facebook-- whether her profile is private or not?? What kind of message was she sending to others, friends and whatnot? How did she believe she would be perceived? With the dearth of standards America has today, of course she kept her title and, of course it wasn't seen as a big deal by many.

On another note, your pool looks great! I really like the little purple flowers in the back! :]

I admit me and my friends take funny stuff like that. I don't post them on the internet, but I'm open and tell my mother. She laughs. Most go through a funny phase like this. I don't like how open the internet is, but every pagent contest has a dirty secret the media wants let out. They will dig to find it too.

This wasn't her fault at all.

Hi Atoosa, I think you touched on an extremely overlooked downside to the otherwise glorious invention of the World Wide Web. This generation and the generations to come will forever grow up with this informality of communication that we still haven’t had a clue on whether this will greatly change the fabric of society, or if the lack of interaction will inevitably effect the development of our character as humans in general. The appeal of the internet provides us with a sense of false security that more than likely enabled Miss New Jersey to feel ok about posting pictures that were meant for the eyes of here friends only. Although the use of a somewhat foresight by Miss New Jersey prompted her to set her page to private; as you said, ” once something's on the internet, it will be there forever.)”.

It is a very unfortunate situation for Miss New Jersey, however this does bring a platform of discussion for all of the fabulous girls of the next generation that will eventually take over the world. It’s fun to be young and sometimes have a temporary lapse in judgment, but it’s not worth allowing it to resurface in your future in the way it wasn’t originally intended. I too had to express better judgment while constructing and updating my MySpace page, and there are much more creative ways to show your friends that you can be a little crazy sometimes….it’s just up to us to find them! :)

P.S. I love the dress!!! I recently found my favorite Mumu (Moo Moo?) slash dress, and I LOVE IT! Super breezy and comfy! I love summer! :)

i agree that the pictures aren't too bad for a "normal" young girl having fun and of course she's "normal" but she's also more than. but i believe that she needs to understand what happened last year with tara and think about the little girls who look up to mrs.america (mrs.new jersey, mrs.virginia, etc.) and pagent girls. i don't think she should have been able to keep her crown. having a state title and national title is suppose to be a very well deserved and respected position, and if young girls see pictures like that they could assume it's okay and go out and do the same things. i'm sorry if you disagree but it's just my opinion.

People shouldn't be taking other peoples pictures ans posting them. There are some awesome photo hosting websites that allow you to choose so that other people can't copy them.

I saw 1408 on friday the 13th...and I didn't even notice! Awesome movie, but it wasn't as scary as I had hoped. While I agree that college girls should be allowed to have fun without being blackmailed about it, I'd have to say I don't believe she deserves the title. To be Miss New Jersey, you need to be a role model to all ages, especially young girls. What kind of example is it setting for young girls to see pictures like this of a role model on the news? She can have her fun, but needs to keep it private (and I don't just mean her page!). She was asking for these to be leaked when she put them online.

just because shes in the spotlight doesnt mean she cant be herself.
and if people are really worried about role modles. parents should know how to rise there kids to have a good judge of character and look up to someone else, like there mother or an aunt. someone that they actually know. im not saying shes not a role modle tho. im sure she does good things, charitys and such. but why focus on the negitives while we can focus on the good things in life. people need to chill.

I personally don't think it is appropriate for a girl such as herself to be allowed to keep her crown when she has shown disrespect to herself in such a manner. I think These pix will def. hurt her overall chances of winning in the actual Miss America pageant. She will have the other "catty" contestants chatting about it, and you KNOW the judges will "pre judge" her. I seriously doubt Miss New Jersey will stand a chance at winning the crown and title of Miss America now. She will just continue to be "Miss New Jersey". I think just about every young woman out there today has a pic or two or more like this floating around the internet thanks to Facebook, MySpace, etc. It's just made it easier for the public to know what you are like "behind closed doors" ..Or open ones, as the case might be..LOL.

Great article, just the same, Altoosa. Great insight as always.

it's different now in pageants then way back then and girls are more open and wild about themselves then old traditional pageant girls, where some of them wouldn't even dare to be seen out in public with there friends. I think with pageants now this will soon not be an issue since it keeps on reocurring.
