Current mood:  grateful

hey!

I know...I've been so bad....

But at least I have an excuse for being out of touch: Angelika McQueen Rubenstein was born on August 15th just before midnight. She has been keeping me busy...this sweet and adorable Alpha Kitty. Ari and I have been spending these early days of Angelika's life at our home in East Hampton - taking a break from the hustle and bustle of NYC. We are really enjoying the latest and greatest member of the A-Team. Life is a dream. I thank God every day.

I often hear and read that it's impossible for women to "have it all." But I have to disagree. I was able to have a wonderful career and now I'm able to experience motherhood as well as spend quality time with my awesome husband, family and friends. If that's not "having it all" I don't know what is. I have never felt so blessed.

Things weren't always like this for me: When I was younger, I was a total slacker and my mom used to always tell me, "Work hard now and you'll have everything later." Back then I'd roll my eyes but when I got a little older (in college), I started listening to her: I worked my butt off, two internships at a time, wanting so badly to make it big in the magazine business....and I guess I did when I created CosmoGIRL! ten years ago next month. I was 26 years old and felt that smart girls with attitude needed a magazine that spoke directly to them. Our team did a great job and CosmoGIRL! was a huge success for many years. And CosmoGIRL!s success was my success because I became the youngest Editor in Chief in the 100 year history of Hearst Magazines.

Sadly, I just found out on Friday that CosmoGIRL!'s December issue will be its last. My heart and mind are with the incredible staff of CosmoGIRL! who, I'm sure, poured their heart and souls into the magazine until the very last moment and of course with it's readers who soaked up every word and image that wonderful team created.

Even though I left the magazine 5 years ago, I always thought of it as "my baby" since I created the original concept on my bedroom floor with markers, a glue stick and lots of tubes of lipstick around me (to create the "Girl" in the CosmoGIRL! logo). Until Friday, it felt like my baby was still out there being taken care of by another wonderful family. It felt weird but the way things needed to be. Now that baby is gone....and replaced in my life by this new real life CosmoGIRL! - Angelika. The end of one important chapter and the beginning of another...

How does this relate to you? Well, a few ways I guess.

1-My mom was right. If you work hard now, you CAN have everything later. I worked my TAIL off for about 15 years and today I have just the life I always dreamed of and my new baby girl completes that picture. I didn't get here by accident - I designed this life and set the foundation with years of hard work. Yet I'm still pretty young - young enough to ENJOY the fruits of my labor. I want that for you so remember what my mom said: Work hard now and you'll have everything later. "Later" doesn't necessary mean when you are OLD so get focused, sister. It will pay off.

2-To the CosmoGIRL! readers of back in the day and today: You are still fierce and inspirational whether or not you have CosmoGIRL! telling you that you are. The world depends on you to be out there doing your thing. Please do so. Keep the spirit of the magazine -"Born to Lead" - in your heart so you can pave the way for the next generation of incredible girls. I loved you and will love you forever.  Thanks for all you've done for me.

Please stay in touch.

xx atoosa

Maybe It was my alpha kitty senses, but i definitely signed onto myspace earlier today and checked out your page to see if you had posted anything since Angelika was born. :] (I was kinda disappointed you didnt sign on since August but I knew why!) You could only imagine how stoked I was about getting an email on my phone saying you posted a blog. =] But anyway back to the topic, that lesson completely applies to me. Today I sat down and worked on the college applications I had been putting off... I was even inspired to title my essay Alpha Kitty: Born To Lead =] =] =] Im so happy for you and I cant wait till all of my hard work pays off so I can too eventually have it all. =]

Awww...that's so awesome! I'm glad you have this amazing life that you've worked so hard for.

It's funny b/c I think I definitely needed to read this blog. I've been working really hard at my school paper, and I've been questioning how it's going to pay off. So basically, I've just been getting really discouraged. But this helped me put my life in perspective a little more, and it shows me that I'll appreciate all the hard work two years from now when I'm hopefully working somewhere wonderful. Hopefully, I'll also find the life I've always wanted.

Since I haven't read anything new from your blog in a while, it's great to read this post. Congrats on your baby Angelika and letting every young woman know that she can really have it all. I was such a fan of CosmoGIRL!.:( I can't belive its closing. Why do all the good magazine's shut down? Will the website atleast stay alive? CosmoGIRL! was a great magazine, I even wanted to intern for them in a few years (though I worked as a stringer for them for year, but still,) I've been a fan since the beginning and am sad to see it go.

I must say, I read this at just the right time. Lately I have been kind of lost and confused about what I am working so hard towards. But reading this made me realize that if I just keep working hard and stay focused, that success will come and everything will work out for the best. You have always been such an inspiration and a great role model and I have looked up to you since the CosmoGIRL! days. Thank you for that and for being an example of how hard work does pay off in the end. Congratulations on baby Angelika, I am sure that she is absolutely beautiful!! Best wishes~Stephanie =)

Welcome Back Big Momma! No worries about your hiadus, if there is anything you've taught us, that's to be understanding! :o) I bet Angelika is the cutest thing since Hello Kitty rhinestone earrings! I missed you, and OF COURSE am incredibly sad to see Cosmogirl! go, I appreciated the different shades of lipstick on the cover every month haha, but I can honestly tell you that magazine served a really big purpose in my life

I think I've told you before, but I was 13 or 14? and I walked into a grocery store and saw Melissa Joan Hart on the Cover, bright yellow and glowing in all its splendor, I wish I would have saved it so bad right now. But it was your vision that introduced me to my dream and the product of that vision has motivated me to set goals in pursuit of that dream.

I Love you for it! and you did it justice Big Momma!

Congratulations on your baby girl! I have no doubt that you will be an AMAZING mom, and give little Angelika so much confidence in herself.

I'm so sad to hear about CosmoGIRL!. It was a few years ago when I was reading an issue of CosmoGIRL! when I read an article about careers in the fashion industry. I would just like you to know that that article changed the course of my life. I've always been interested in fashion but thought that I should choose a "safe" career and not pursue my passion. But thanks to that article, and ultimately you, I am now in the process of applying to LIM fashion school in New York City, and I plan on majoring in Fashion Merchandising with a minor in Fashion Journalism. My ultimate goal is to work as an editor in a fashion magazine, and I plan on working my butt off, just as you did in college, to get there. Thank you for all of your wise words and the love you show us all! I hope you know that you change lives :)

Love,
Megan <3

Atoosa, love,

It is so ironic that you wrote this bulletin, as you were the first person I thought of when I heard CosmoGIRL! would be coming to a close.

Throughout the years, I grew up admiring the girls displayed amongst the pages... and you of course, as the Editor's note was my favorite. Being my favorite, I not only recognized you as a role model-- but I attribute a lot of my strength, perseverance (and style!) that I have today, to what I learned back then.

Wanting a life in the entertainment/fashion industry, I could not have "dreamed" of it without you and CosmoGIRL!

I'd like to send many thanks, and the utmost best wishes towards your baby girl--she is blessed with a truly wonderful mother.

Keeping the "Born to Lead" spirit alive.. Much love always, Julie

Atoosa,
You mention your mom in this blog. Well, I can't remember if I've ever told you but my mom sort of had a part in creating Cosmogirl!. She was one of Hearst's many attorneys (not sure if she still is) and helped to get the website www.cosmogirl.com. The reason why someone had to help get it is quite funny but slightly inappropriate so if you haven't heard but want to, message me and I'll tell you all about it! I remember being in the fifth grade when it all started and I'm now twenty years old, wow! I remember my mother attending the launch party and me begging to go though she said no not because she didn't think it appropriate for a fifth grader but because that same night, my class had tix to The Lion King on Broadway. She wasn't sure I'd ever have a chance to see it again (I did) and wanted me to since it was getting rave reviews. I still wish I was at that party but I'm going to make my career have something to do w/ media which means there should be many launch parties for me to attend in the future. Who knows, maybe you and I can party together someday! Cosmogirl! was amazing and so many of the articles were inspiring and well written. It will be missed!

First of all, Congratulation Atoosa on the birth of your daughter!! I love how you did not spell her name with a "c", not that I have a problem with it, it's a change and I like it! Second, I am heart broken that CosmoGIRL magazine will be ending soon! Every chance that I can get to the latest edition, I have to read it thoroughly from front page to the last! I don't know why! lol...I even have to let people cut me when I'm in line just so I can finish reading about the latest celebrity gossips or the latest trends. What I'm saying is that the magazine has made so many changes, well from what I see in my life (by reading the BORN TO LEAD section), but I am confident that it has changed some readers as well and the magazine has done an amazing job! I love how it is directly towards young women or even young men on how to make right decisions and be active in life. Is it right if I ask, Why is this happening? I don't think any magazine will be as creative, and unique as CG! I pray that it will have a comeback! I believe in 2nd chances so it never hurts to believe!

Love,
Jenn

Congrats! Your daughter is lucky to have you as her mom, role model, and ALPHA KITTY:] Throughout my high school years and now my first year in college, I have always looked up to you as the female role model in my life. In fact, all your editor pages in the Seventeen magazine were my favorite to read because I felt like you were giving ME advise. I even was able to be part of Seventeen Magazine a couple times in the past. First, I was able to interview Christina Aguilera for the Seventeen Cover Cam. Second, I was Maybelline Time To Shine and Seventeen Magazine winner. Seventeen Magazine uncovered the different pieces of me that I treasure. Like after interviewing Christina I discovered that I love interviewing stars and now I am studing broadcast journalism in college. Also, through the Maybelline Time to Shine and Seventeen Magazine winner I was able to go to New York City and tour the Seventeen Magazine office. My dreams started to come true. You have always inspired me to be the best me. The best dork that I am. The best secret poet. The best writer. The best model and role model. Most importantly, the best dreamer. Thank you so much for everything:]
