Intellivision: Boy or Girl?
by Keith Robinson, President, Intellivision Productions
read all of Keith Robinson's blogs on his MySpace page

When I created the Intellivision MySpace profile, I used the vital statistics for the console itself: born in Hawthorne, California (headquarters of Mattel Toys) in 1980 (I count the national release as the birth; the 1977 through 1979 development time and test marketing I consider the gestation period).

I didn't expect any controversy. Then I received an angry e-mail from Blue Sky Ranger Steve Ettinger, programmer of Hover Force, Chip Shot: Super Pro Golf, Spiker!: Super Pro Volleyball, and several other Intellivision titles.

"The gender is listed as 'Male,'" Steve wrote. "Since the Intellivision not only lacks a, er, um, 'willie' - it also quite clearly has an um, er, 'input slot.' In the world of 'willies' and 'slots,' the Intellivision is, indisputably, 'Female.'

"Fix it."

Wow. I have to admit that when I filled out the profile, I just assumed the Intellivision was male (you have to pick "male" or "female" - no "it" allowed). But Steve makes a good point.

What do you think?

Post a comment with your vote and, if you want to, your reasoning. I'll give everyone a few weeks to weigh in, then I'll run the votes and arguments past the Blue Sky Rangers and we'll make a decision: boy or girl.

Help the Intellivision solve its gender confusion! Vote today!

Well, on one hand, it does plug into the tv. On the other, cartridges plug into it, and that's really the more important part.

Plus there's that general methodology of dubbing machinery "girls" by the owners/creators, so I'd go with female.

I'd say Intellivision is a female. In Spanish, the word for "Computer" is a femine word, "La computadora." Intellivision was advertised to become a powerful home computer with the proper add-ons.

well i say its boy and girl because girls also played the games as well as boys and in this error in time where  females are just the same as mailes  as fair i remember girls  usuly win the arugments when we fight with them 99.9 percent of the time

it should be  boy and girl  its only right and  fair to both sexes

MySpace requires you to specify a gender - you can't say "both." So we have to decide boy OR girl.

I say the Intellivision should be listed as female.  Mostly because then I wouldn't feel as awkward telling people I spent a lot of time with "her" in my basement.

Well, if the Intellivision is female, would that make the Atari System Changer the dude? I imagine they would have a fairly ugly baby.....

To continue what Eric said, I don't play with men, I play with Women.  Since I spend a lot of time playing with my Intellivision, I'm going to say it's a woman.

Please don't make me doubt my sexuality... You don't want to make my wife mad, do you?

If the majority of the programmers were Male, then Male it is. If the majority of programmers were female, than make it a female.

The Intellivision is definitely female.  What else seems appropriate when you consider how it's used?  Yes, there's the obvious of "it has a slot," but there's more to it.  Do you spend/have you spent long nights alone with it?  When games were readily available, were you spending a fair bit of your money with it?  The console itself was designed so the controllers could be stored directly on top as part of the console.  Look at other systems; their controllers have wires you have to wrap up, or they're wireless, but you still have to put the controller somewhere when you're done, they still take up space.  If that's not womanly convenience and cleanliness, I don't know what is.  Further, the controllers lacked "joysticks", utilizing a disc, buttons, and a touchpad very similar to a phone, again more of what I'd categorize as feminine design.  Lastly, consider Intellivoice.  It plugs into the console, but isn't able to say much.  The reason?  Imagine you're female, you're suddenly able to speak, but your voice comes out as a male announcer.  It'd be the equivalent of being a very hot and sexy woman, and one day you open your mouth to discover your voice sounds like Bea Arthur.  You'd keep your mouth closed and learn a new form of communication.

At first, I was going to say the Intellivision was obviously male.  If anything was a chick, it was the Colecovision.

But after reading Scott's argument, I've changed my mind.  My Intellivision was female the whole time, and I never knew...

I thought you could tell by looking at its storage... hard disk is male, floppy is female.

Blue Sky Ranger Karen McConathy sent me an e-mail with her opinion. Here are her comments:

"
I agree with Steve's observations concerning the Intellivision - looking at the box, it would appear to be female. However, being female myself, I always referred to the Intellivision as a male. The Intellivision, at times, infuriated me just like a male. The controls would say one thing and do another; they were temperamental. Now, I can also see all of you males out there saying that this would indicate to you that the Intellivision is indeed female. I don't know if the Intellivision is the type of machine that would not stop for directions, but it clearly enjoys playing sports, chase and shoot-em-up games in preference to more typically feminine games. (Thin Ice comes to mind.) The intellectual games such as Chess, are played by both sexes and consequently are irrelevant.

"For behavior alone, I will vote that the Intellivision is indeed male - looks can be deceiving."
