Click Here to visit me What race are you? (how to end racism in ten years)
A provocative essay by singer/songwriter Vinnie James

INSTRUCTIONS: Please read this essay to the very end and then post the banner code into your profile page and share the essay with THREE people you know.

(c.) 2006 Vinnie James. All rights reserved worldwide (www.vinniejames.com) How would you like to eject racism from the world within ten years? Okay... let's begin right now.... What race are you? White? Is that a race? Are you Black? Is that a race? What race are you? Are you Italian? And is Italian different than White? Are you African? What race are you? Are you Indian? Maybe Japanese? Maybe Native American? What race are you? Now i want you to really think about the question... What race are you? Say to yourself: "What race am I?"

So... what race are you? Okay... let me make it a bit easier... what race is a cocker spaniel? What race is a dalmation? How about a pit bull? they're all different races right? One's of the race of spaniel right? Spaniel IS a RACE right? and the dalmation... that's a RACE isn't it? It's the dalmation race right? How about the black labrador? It's black right? So it's the black labrador race right? So all these are from different races right? In fact... there's a different RACE for each dog color right? So... there's the chocolate labrador RACE... which is a different RACE than the black labrador... and of course these are both different RACES from the golden labrador... right? So... what race are you... is your skin a light color? Is it dark brown? Is it a golden color? Is it a nice coffee tan? So... the color of your skin determines your RACE right? Just like with dogs... right? So if your skin is a light beige color... and you marry someone with dark brown skin.... you're in an INTERRACIAL relationship... right? Because you and your spouse are different RACES... just like if a dalmation mates with a labrador... that would be two different RACES intermingling... right... the dalmation RACE and the labrador RACE... right...?
and if you and your spouse from a different RACE have children... you have a MIXED RACE child... right... i mean... isn't this correct?

So the puppies of the dalmation who got together with the labrador are mixed RACE puppies... right? I'm just making sure i have this right... skin color determines the RACE right? So... if i'm from brazil... i'm of the brazilian RACE right? What if my skin is very light? Then... even though i'm from brazil... am i from the WHITE RACE? What if my skin is very light and i have blonde hair but my sister has coffee brown skin and dark hair... is my sister a different RACE than i am?
If you're a blonde haired, blue-eyed girl... and you kiss a dark-skinned brown eyed boy... does that mean you've kissed someone from another RACE? I mean... he's a different RACE than you... right? It would be like a golden labrador kissing a chocolate labrador retriever... wouldn't it? That would be bad... wouldn't it? I mean... isn't the golden labrador a different RACE from the chocolate labrador? they're two different RACES kissing aren't they? So... RACIAL PREJUDICE is when one RACE prejudges another RACE... right? So... in order for their to be RACIAL PREJUDICE... there have to be different RACES right? That's right isn't it? So... if the people were all of the SAME RACE... there couldn't be RACIAL PREJUDICE right? If people were all the same RACE then their children could NEVER be MIXED RACE children... right? Because they are all the SAME RACE... right? If all people were of the same RACE then there could never be INTERRACIAL marriage right? I mean... all these terms would sound kinda stupid wouldn't they?

I mean... if all people were the same race... and two of them got together... they're of the same race... because all people would be the same race... right... so RACE MIXING would be a rather stupid thing to say... wouldn't it? to say "hey, there goes an INTERRACIAL couple" would be a dumb thing to say right? I mean... since they are both from the SAME RACE and all... to say that they have a MIXED RACE child would be a stupid thing to say... right... i mean... since their child is born of two parents of the same RACE...
So... what RACE are you... what RACE am I... what RACE is every person on this planet? What RACE are WE... are WE... are WE? We are ALL THE SAME RACE... We are all of the HUMAN RACE... there is not ONE HUMAN that is NOT of the HUMAN RACE... that means if two HUMANS get together... they CANNOT BE INTERRACIAL because they are the SAME RACE... that means that if they have a child... the child CANNOT be a MIXED RACE child because BOTH PARENTS are the SAME RACE... since everyone REALLY IS the same RACE... there is no such thing as RACE MIXING... in fact... there CANNOT be such a thing as RACE MIXING... unless of course someone figures out a way for a human to mate with a giraffe... now THAT would be race mixing... The next time you use the word RACE in a sentence dealing with people who's skin may be different shades of beautiful... please be referring to the olympic 400 meter or something... to say that any human being is of another RACE than any other human being is just stupid... i mean... really.... isn't it?

Humans... members of one RACE... the same RACE... have many different shades of beauty... the same... arresting and breathtaking beauty that we call alive... you are beautiful... you are of my RACE... all of humankind is of my RACE... we are all one RACE... the HUMAN RACE... and we all go well together... we mix well... we blend... our children are beautiful... all of their shades of beautiful are stunning... all of our interlaced fingers are a work of art... Now go out and find members of your RACE... dance... sing... laugh... get through past hurts and anger... realize that you are all ONE RACE... and heal this sad and broken world... do it now... bring beauty back to the world... before all we have is ugliness... ONE RACE my beloved... ONE RACE... we are ONE RACE... there is no such thing as RACIAL PREJUDICE... there is no such thing as INTERRACIAL relationships... there is no such thing as MIXED RACE children... there is no such thing as RACIAL PROFILING... let these useless words evaporate into the mist and "embrace one race." That shall be the battle cry of the new grassroots revolution that will destroy a thousand years of hell and murderous conduct... "embrace ONE race."

Will you commit to join me? Copy the code i've placed in the text area below and past it into your "about me" section or your "band info" section, which will place the "embraceONErace" banner on your page and spread the word to the rest of the world. Let's make it a point to end racism in ten years. Is it a tall order? Yes. Can it be done? You tell me. I hope your answer is "yes," because only you can decide the outcome. Embrace ONE race. When you hear someone say "interracial relationship," look at them and say "embrace ONE race." When you hear someone tell a nigger joke... or a spic joke or a heeb joke or a mick joke or a sand nigger joke or a slant eye joke or a moonpie face joke... look at that person and say: "embrace ONE race." The next time you hear someone say someone has "racial prejudice" look at them and say "embrace ONE race." The next time someone says they can't be your friend because you're a different RACE... look at them and say "embrace ONE race." The next time your parent says they're going to disown you because you're dating someone from another RACE... look at them and say: "embrace ONE race." embrace ONE race... embrace ONE race... Just this simple phrase will change the world... watch and see... I love you all... Vinnie James

I read the blog and I understand it and why you wrote it. I am hopeful that people are going to take the time to read it and take the message to heart. What I have realized is that people have become comfortable in their limited worlds, they won't stop and think that this world belongs to all of us regardless of the shade of our skin and that we all have as much right to share in the world as those that judge by color. This is "our" world, it belongs to us collectively and we all have the obligation to see past the barriers of color.

The Human Race is not as kind as the animal race. Animals don't see past the pedigrees that society has placed on them. They are a "like Kind" and as such blend themselves, when the human race blends those that take that step are scorned by society, while the dog with spots is just as attractive in the animal race as those without. Other animals don't shun that dog for his or her choice but humans are another story. The human race is said to be of superior intelligence, it appears to me that on many levels the animals have won hands down.

To quote Martin Luther King, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." My question is: Why are we still waiting for this day?

Its great that people are starting to ask the questions. Questions do bring results, it makes people uncomfortable, more aware, stirs the mind to really look at what they do and why! The sad thing of course is that people like being comfortable in their boxes, its scary with out one.. at least they think so! So kudos to your essay and the questions that you are asking.. all it takes is one person to throw the rock in and start the wave!!

Thanks, Vinnie,

We are, indeed, ONE RACE, and we share one homeland: the Earth. People draw lines. They only exist in peoples' imaginations....if all people realized this fact, war would become an impossibility.

*Goosebumps* I love the Unity Symbol, *No Division*, it's time has come.

In the US, during the 60's and 70's, we refused to answer the "Race Question". By doing so, we upset the Census Takers, who were after "White", "Negro", "Spanish", or "Asian".

Then came the changes, "White" became "Caucasian", "Negro" became "Black", "Spanish" became "Latin", and "Other" was added. We always checked "Other".

Later, "Black" became "African-American", and "Native American" was added. Are there not "Austrailian-Americans" and "Polish-Americans"? Isn't everyone born in America, American? How long can the US census "race" list get? Very, very long. When there is room for a write-in after "Other" we check "Other" now write "Human".

I'll be happy when we don't need to use quotation marks to define ourselves.

getting rid of the concept of "race" is specious, because it does not get rid of socialized, psychological, and historical roots of discrimination. in fact, getting rid of race makes it more difficult to prove that ethnic discrimination exists. when lynchings of african americans in the southern united states happened in the earlier part of the 20th century to the 60, the white supremacists did not have to ask the victim "are you black?" before acting. furthermore, it promotes assimilation to the dominant ethnic group in society, and totally ignores the meaningfulness of each and every ethnic group's culture, identity, and heritage. the solution to racism is NOT ending the concept of race; rather, the solution is promoting respect for diversity. i'm filipino-american, and i would be very offended if someone told me simply to forget that and simply identify myself as "american." i am in favor of promoting respect for racial and ethnic diversity, not for racial blindness. brown is beautiful, yellow is beautiful, white is beautiful, black is beautiful! and you have a multi-ethnic background that is beautiful too!

To attempt to tear down the false barrier of race does not "gloss over" the past. If people continue to throw up "race" at every twist and turn, how then can Dr King's dream of being judged "by the content of character" as opposed to skin ever come about? If you want to maintain these barriers, than you must accept that people will continue to use them as, well, barriers. America has come a long ways since the dark era that spawned the civil rights movement. To embrace one national identity, in our case, American, is not to deny one's heritage, but rather to embrace our common heritage, and the blessings and freedoms we have for being Americans. Mr James makes a very good case and I completely agree with the one race concept. We are all human. We come from different places and cultures. We are different colors, heights, widths, etc. But despite all differences, at the end of the day we are all humans. To continue to uphold the separating of people along the lines of ethnicity or skin tone will only prolong the opportunities for racism. Science attests that there is less than .03 percent of our DNA that makes up "racial" differences.

Also, (Act 17:24) God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

(Act 17:25) Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

(Act 17:26) And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

One planet, One Race

Cerebral... thanks for your comment... i'd love for you to come back and make a comment that adds to the discussion... you are appreciated here and i would hope you'll return and respond... as for who appears in my top friends... that changes every week... you happened to see the page after i posted those particular friends... if you'd visited in the past or if you visit in the future, you'll notice that most of the time, since i have so many friends... my top friends section follows a theme... most of the time i actually publish the theme of the week as a bulletin... i've been in the study pretty solid over the past month and haven't had time to post the weekly bulletin... i allow what's going on in my life and what i'm learning about determine how i pick the next group of top friends... in this case... i did this for a friend of mine as part of a discussion he and i were having about the fact that several of my female friends on myspace look similar (i.e. wide-set eyes, high cheek bones, etc.)... what some would consider a very "european" look... if you look at the photos i think you'll agree... as far as "light-skinned," in my vocabulary... there is no such thing... it's just skin... the result of a biological process... skin is skin... and all skin is a varying shade of brown... as someone who is very serious about being a man... and being a man who is experienced in the art of appreciating the delicate beauty of women... i am attracted to and have shared intimate moments with women of all shades of brown, from very, very light... to very, very dark... all over the world... and what i have discovered in all of my encounters is that their skin color is an integral part of their charm and beauty and is among the things that makes spending time with them such a rich and inspiring experience for me... your response to my top friends this week illustrates one of the issues we're discussing here... you automatically assumed that i chose those women due to their shade of tan and your comment shows that you didn't even consider that it could have been for any other reason than that i "prefer" this shade of brown... you've made a classic assumption that has its roots in specifically the north american brand of racism... in fact... upon reading your comment... i knew without even looking at your profile that you were located in north america... specifically the united states... your assumption speaks more about you than it does about me... i'm glad for your comment and for the opportunity to point out that racism exists because of assumptions and preconceptions we have about each other... this is a classic example of one of those assumptions... i.e... that i like what you call "light skinned" women more than any other. Remember... i travel all over the world... i'm not restricted to the united states or any other country for that matter... what you'll find when traveling around the world as i do is that in every place the women are very different than that place you just left... and they are all beautiful... my "embrace ONE race" is the idea that wherever i go in the world... understand more and more that people are people... humans are humans... the kiss of a woman from Ghana is just as sweet as the kiss of a woman from Tokyo, which is just as sweet as the kiss of a woman from Holland... and their laughter is just as inspiring and uplifting... their tears just as disconcerting... their whispers just as disarming... make no mistake... your assumption couldn't be farther from the truth... i welcome your responses... love, peace, strength and respect to you... - Vinnie James

All I can say on this issue is the two things that upset me the most in this world is cruelty to living creatures and racism..........I don't understand it and never will.

Unfortunately there will always be people who cannot see past their own prejudices, and these prejudices are usually instilled in them from early childhood by narrow minded mean spirited parents. And that is very sad.

I live in hope.

Thankyou for sharing your essay Vinnie.

Jo... you're so right... we are not only one race... but we're one family... but in a world where fathers molest their daughters and sons kill their mothers.... now we need ethics to define what "family behavior" should look like... we definitely cannot use current standards to ensure that even with the understanding that we're all one family, that we're going to behave in a civil manner toward each other... and the revolution continues... onward friend...

Always good to know i am not alone. Drop the word race, lets manifest the future.

The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens. - Baha'u'llah

The fifth principle of Bahá'u'lláh is:

Prejudices of Religion, Race or Sect destroy the foundation of Humanity

All the divisions in the world, hatred, war and bloodshed, are caused by one or other of these prejudices.

The whole world must be looked upon as one single country, all the nations as one nation, all men as belonging to one race. Religions, races, and nations are all divisions of man's making only, and are necessary only in his thought; before God there are neither Persians, Arabs, French nor English; God is God for all, and to Him all creation is one. We must obey God, and strive to follow Him by leaving all our prejudices and bringing about peace on earth.

I just found your page this morning.....and this blog. Aho!

I've been 'boycotting' the 'race' thing now for many decades on all those wonderful forms and applications that need completed. I ALWAYS check "other"....not because of the 'mixed' blood that runs through my veins that some would categorize as white and native american, but because "HUMAN" is not an option~~thus, my 'other' response. And when there's a line to 'fill in'...I always write "HUMAN". I've received many strange looks over the years, but it's worth every one. Perhaps some small seed has been planted since I started doing that back in 1976. (How I remember the year is another story, and not necessary to this blog!) ;-)

ONE
The skin tones begin to blend
Until they are all as one
Wars of racism
Now from father to son,
The war of racism will be won
As the assorted colors run
Down the pathway of life
And become one.
