59. EXT. TOGGIN, VIEWED FROM SPACE
Palpatine's shuttle enters the planet's orbit.
60. EXT. TOGGIN, FITZ CITY, STREETS-DAY
The streets of Fitz City, the capital of Toggin, are filled to the brim with the native species of the planet, the Togs. They are interspersed throughout the street, holding signs and chanting in a foreign tongue. Palpatine and Maul pass swiftly through the crowd.
Maul
Why are these people protesting?
Palpatine
They are the Togs, the natural inhabitants of Toggin. For years, humans have been settling onto their planet, using their resources and pushing them out of their lands. The Togs are no longer taking it.
Maul
Has there been fighting?
Palpatine
Not yet, but it is only a matter of time until fighting breaks out.
(looks around)
Senator Sneed's mansion is not far from here. We need a place to post surveillance.
61. EXT. TOGGIN, ROOFTOP-DAY
Palpatine and Maul stand on the rooftops, binoculars in hand.
62. EXT. SNEED MANSION, BACKYARD, SEEN FROM BINOCULARS
A scan of the backyard reveals nothing, until it spots a young man, early twenties, in the lower corner of the yard. He is shirtless, kneeling in meditation. He jumps up lightning fast, removes a lightsaber from his belt clip, and begins practicing moves with his blade.
63. CLOSE ON PALPATINE
Palpatine lowers his binoculars.
Palpatine
(to himself)
This may be harder than originally thought.
He raises his binoculars.
64. EXT. SNEED MANOR, BACKYARD- CONTINUING
The man continues his practice, moving with the grace and agility of a professional dancer. There is a crack of branches breaking behind him, and he whirls around super fast, aiming his laser sword at the chest of the intruder.
Ronan
Careful with that thing, Virzi. You could put someone's eye out.
Virzi Takassa
(deactivates lightsaber)
My apologies, Senator.
Ronan
You know, I was always under the impression that excommunicated Jedi were to relinquish their lightsabers upon leaving the Order.
Virzi
They are. However, no one said anything about building another one later on.
Both men laugh.
Ronan
I can see it was wise to hire a former Jedi as head of Security for my home. Things seem to be in order around here.
Virzi
Thank you. Things on this planet, though, are getting pretty nasty.
Ronan
So I've heard. Tell me, from your professional opinion, can this be resolved without violence?
Virzi
The Togs want back what they feel is rightfully theirs. The humans think of this planet as their home too. Unless both parties are willing to reach some sort of compromise, bloodshed will begin, and soon.
Ronan
That's what I'm afrai-
Ronan is interrupted by a lovely young brunette. She runs up to him and wraps her arms around his neck.
Jennis Sneed
Father! Oh, I've missed you so much!
Ronan
I've missed you too, sweetheart.
Jennis
It has been too long since you've been home.
Jennis takes a long glance at Virzi, who returns the gesture. It becomes apparent that there is an attraction between the two. Ronan, however, is oblivious.
Jennis
Good morning, Virzi.
Virzi
Good morning, Jennis.
Jennis
(nervously)
Why don't I make us some dinner? I'll bet you haven't had a decent meal since you left.
Ronan
That's a great idea.
Jennis heads back to the house, giving Virzi another long glance as she exits.
Ronan
My lovely Jennis. I trust you've been keeping an eye on her?
Virzi
Yes sir, very closely
Virzi blushes at his "slip".
Ronan
Good. My daughter means the world to me. She is a woman now, but I'll never stop thinking of her as my baby girl. If anything ever happened to her, I don't know what I'd do.
65. ROOFTOP, CONTINUING
Palpatine and Maul turn away from the Sneed home.
Palpatine
Go back to the ship. Stay there until I call for you.
Maul
I thought you needed my help?
Palpatine
Are you questioning an order?
Maul
No, Master.
Maul leaves. Palpatine withdraws a portable hologram communicator from his pocket and contacts Darth Plagueis. The Sith Lord's image appears a moment later.
Palpatine
Senator Sneed's head of security is a disgraced Jedi. How do you wish me to proceed?
Plagueis
A Jedi? Why do these things always have to be so complicated? Kill the Jedi first, and then kill everyone in that house. Leave no survivors, understand?
Palpatine
Yes, Master.
Plagueis
Now go.
Plagueis disappears.
66. INT. SNEED MANSION, DINING ROOM, DAY
Ronan, Jennis and Virzi are seated at the dining room table, enjoying the meal that Jennis prepared for them.
Virzi
This is a wonderful meal Jennis.
Jennis
(blushing)
Thank you. It's my mother's recipe. She taught it to me shortly before she died.
A servant enters the dining room.
Servant
(to Ronan)
Your guests have arrived, sir.
Ronan
Already? They weren't supposed to be here until tomorrow morning. Very well, bring them in.
The servant exits.
Virzi
"Guests"? You never mentioned anything about guests, sir.
Ronan
(nervously)
I was going to tell you, as soon as I found a way to. You see, this situation between humans and Togs is getting out of hand, so I thought it best to bring in outside help to mediate the negotiations.
Virzi
"Outside help"? What does that-
The servant returns, with two men following behind him. The first, Marzan Antilles, is around fifty years of age. His counterpart is Warren Antonis, a young boy around twenty. They are garbed in light brown tunics, with lightsabers dangling from their sides. Jedi, they are. Virzi jumps out of his chair in surprise.
Ronan
You must be the two Jedi I asked for.
Marzan
Yes. My name is Marzan Antilles. This is my Padawan, Warren Antonis. We are here to serve you in any way we can.
There's a slight "mocking" edge in his voice.
Ronan
I appreciate any help that is given. If you'll excuse me a moment, I have to get some things. We'll go to my office downtown. I can get you up to date on the situation there.
Ronan leaves. The servant follows. Marzan and Warren move in on Virzi.
Marzan
Look who it is, Warren. It's Virzi Takassa. Do you remember him?
Warren
The face isn't familiar, but the back is. I remember it clearly when he turned it on us and left the Jedi.
Virzi
Marzan Antilles, Warren Antonis, it is good to see you again. It has been a long time.
Marzan
It has been a long time. Five, six years? What does an exile do after he's been exposed as a traitor? Work as a security guard? How honorable!
Virzi
I am not a traitor.
Warren
Look, Master, he carries a lightsaber.
Marzan
Have you not tarnished the Jedi name enough? Now you dishonor it further by prancing around with one of our weapons. Hand it over.
Virzi unclips it and ignites the blade. Marzan and Warren follow suit, and the three of them stare at each other, poised for attack.
Virzi
Why don't you take it from me, if you're able? As I recall, Marzan, I defeated you easily in a sparring competition when I was thirteen and you were already a Master. And young Warren here did so horribly on his tests that the only reason he wasn't kicked out of the Jedi temple was because you convinced the council that he would die on his own. Which is probably true, judging by his horrible stance. His left side is so exposed I could have cut him down while bench pressing a Hutt.
Ronan reenters.
Ronan
What is the meaning of this? This is not how Jedi- past or present- behave. Now lower your lightsabers, all of you!
The three Jedi obey, each casting distrustful glances.
Ronan
(Cont'd)
Master Antilles, if you and your Padawan will follow me.
Marzan
Of course, Senator Sneed.
Ronan, Marzan and Warren exit, leaving Virzi alone with Jennis.
Virzi
I'm sorry you had to see that. I'm sorry I had to see that. It's not the Jedi way. I should know better. Sometimes I feel like I am losing touch with everything I used to be. I look in the mirror and I don't know who is staring back at me.
Jennis lays a hand on his shoulder.
Jennis
Let's go for a walk. You'll feel better.
67. EXT. SNEED MANSION, FRONT YARD, DAY, VIEW FROM BINOCULARS
Virzi and Jennis exit the mansion from the front door and walk onto the front yard.
68. EXT. ROOFTOP
Palpatine lowers his binoculars and places them inside his tunic. He exits the rooftop.
69. EXT. BRIDGE
The bridge is a large durasteel construct that connects Fitz City to the landmass on the other side of the Toggin River, a five mile wide waterway that runs the entire circumference of the planet. Virzi and Jennis walk along the bridge, standing unusually close to one another but looking quite tense.
Jennis
I love taking walks across the river. My mother would take me, and as we walked she would tell me the history of the natives and how they revered the water as a god. My mother was a great woman. When she died, my father was devastated. He had given up everything he believed to be with her, and suddenly she was gone. He found himself lost, "like a ship without a navicomputer" he once told me. I couldn't bear to see him like that, so I vowed to look after him until he healed. Many years have passed, and he makes a good show of acting like he's moved on, but there are times when he thinks no one's watching, he gets this far away look in his eyes and I know he's thinking of her.
70. EXT. BRIDGE, ENTRANCE
Palpatine steps on to the bridge. Virzi and Jennis are several thousand feet farther up. He walks briskly toward them. Their backs are to him, and they will have no awareness of his presence until it is too late.
71. BACK TO VIRZI AND JENNIS
Virzi
You are really fortunate, Jennis. You know who your family is. Your mother and father loved you.
They pass a construction team. The team consists of a couple of droids and a large crane-like machine. The crane is hoisting a large durasteel beam for the top of the bridge.
72. ANGLES ON DROID SUPERVISOR
Droid Supervisor
Lift it up. Careful now. Careful now!
73.CLOSE ON DURASTEEL BEAM
The beam is raised up by two steel cables, one on each end. The cable to the farthest of Virzi and Jennis shows signs of intense stress.
74. ANGLES ON VIRZI AND JENNIS
Virzi
(cont'd)
I never knew my real family. Force adepts are taken from their parents while they are infants to insure there are no "outside influences" to impression the youngling's mind. The Jedi were my only family. Now they treat me like scum. Like I didn't have reasons for doing what I did.
Jennis
Why did you leave the Jedi order?
75. ANGLES ON PALPATINE
Palpatine is right behind Virzi and Jennis. He unclips his lightsaber and prepares to fire it up.
76. ANGLES ON VIRZI AND JENNIS
Virzi
I had no choice. You see…
77. CLOSE ON STEEL CABLE
It snaps. The beam swings like a pendulum in the direction of the three unsuspecting pedestrians.
78. CLOSE ON PALPATINE
The beam strikes him full on. Palpatine is raised into the air and over the side of the bridge. His lightsaber plunger into the depths, with him following shortly after.
79. ANGLES ON VIRZI AND JENNIS
They spin around and watch as Palpatine falls into the river. Virzi rips off his shirt and jumps in after him.
BLACK OUT
