Buuuuuuuuullshit.

Not once did Bush even pretend to address the issue of whether 20,000 troops would be enough. He just assumed it would, and waxed on and on about how great it will be once order is restored in Baghdad (pssst, buddy: 200,000 may not be enough extra troops at this point). This was his last chance to convince me that having a wee bit o' hope about the future of Iraq is justified, and if you can't tell, he didn't succeed.

The good news, sorta: Congress is gonna fight this tooth and nail. How the Dems grew a spine is still beyond me, but Pelosi, Ried, Durbin, et al. are about to ramp up a major media blitzkrieg over the next few days and I'm sensing a rout, á la the Social Security battle last spring, only bigger.  Everything about the current political dynamic screams that this will be Bush's signature lame-duck moment, because he's gonna push and push, and I just don't think any surge is gonna happen. The Dems will find a way to gum the works and Bush's fellow Republicans just aren't eager enough to help him out on this one. Even Sam "Darwinism is Satanism" Brownback has publicly come out against it. At his back, Bush probably has Sens. Lieberman, McCain, and Graham, and maybe his daughters.

This all serves McCain and Graham up right, though. They were the ones to first promote this escalation nonsense, despite the fact that they both full-well knew 20,000 troops aren't enough, it's just all that's available. It wasn't a serious proposal. It was just supposed to make them look serious to the Fox News crowd leading up to the 2008 elections. And they gotta be privately pissed that Bush actually took their made-for-TV proposal and ran with it. If the surge doesn't produce results they'll also be pegged with the blame, and rightfully so.
