Hey there,

You might have seen some media excitement about my sexuality lately. Basically, I gave an interview that's since been twisted around by other writers so I figure I should clear things up for anyone who's been confused by it all.

As I explained in that original interview, I've never felt comfortable with labeling or categorizing human beings. However if we're going to pigeonhole me, I've been in relationships with both men and women so I guess I fall most easily under the category "Bisexual".

The reason I've tried to avoid discussing this with journalists is because - like most people - I just don't like the idea of virtual strangers delving into my private life and possibly misrepresenting things.

Recent events have just reinforced that view. Please rest assured that I am not, never have been, and never will be ashamed of my sexuality but also please respect the fact that when I do an interview I want it to be about my music and not about my love life!

Thanks for your support and understanding.

Missy x

You are an inspiring person and i commend you and all your efforts. The fact that you had to "clear" up all the misinterpreting is truly sad. In the fact that people will say anything and turn your words around just to sell is pathetic. Many people love your work and i dont think that your personal life is any of our business.

So on that note, much love to you and all that you do.

Way to go Missy! I totally agree...those media types should only be interested in your music and not your love life! I, for one, love the messages you write in your lyrics. Many of your songs touch me deeply and I relate to alot of the words you've written. Kudos to you for standing up for your rights and letting them know what the interviews should be about!

Good on ya Missy... be proud of who you are...
It *doesn't* matter what you do in your spare time (ok, it *shouldn't* but in some respects mainly the media, it will matter) it's your music that speaks volumes for you and how wonderful you are. Keep up the fantastic work ! :)

I admire your honesty. These days, nobody can ever just be left to live their own lives without the prying of others. Unfortunately it's human nature; gossip...the need to know everything.

peace,
Amber.

Good on you Missy!!!

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you are saying....it must be a bitch to have to put up with that crap!! I know exactly where you are coming from as I share the same "pigeonhole" with you... as i know a lot of people do...it's going to get crowded in there soon!! LOL

Keep smiling petal and we shall keep loving you for your talent and all that is you.

Good on you Missy! I completely agree with what you are saying. Personally, I read very little of the things that come out of the media. And the things that I read I don't really believe. It's all about the music I say! Who cares about the rest! I don't get why someones sexuality would be of interest to anyone else, I don't believe it changes anything at all really.
So cheers Missy and keep up the good work!

Sucks that words get twisted so easily and the media like to sensationalise everything to sell more papers.
You seem to have handled it well and in the end,it is no ones business but yours.
Keep up the good work

Well said Missy! I can't believe how frightened we are of love in society that the only way we can understand it is to label it or pigeonhole it into a tight little packages of stereotypes. What happened to simply falling in love with a person regardless of their gender. I really hope this topic gets laid to rest very soon and we can just focus on your wonderful inspiring music.

Missy, I totally respect your views and beliefs about the media - tabloids are completely and utterly evil!!

Stay true to your heart and always do what makes you happy, that is the most important thing.

Cheers,

dont stress, I think u'll find that the majority of your fans understood what u were saying initially & (among people i know at least) many have been annoyed at the medias reaction to the article, not once did you say you were "coming out", as the media claimed (and why should u have to "come out" anyway?)...its all just another example of twisted truths & prying eyes for the sake of money & controversy.
keep doing what u are doing, ur private life may provide lyrics for your songs, but your sexuality certainly doesnt make your music what it is!!

looking forward to your gig at belvoir this sunday :)

best of luck,
Liz xx

MISSY!! I cant wait to see you in concert this Saturday. It's going to be amazing, and I seriously can not wait.

Oh and here's my little view on things, you are 'Missy Higgins' not 'bisexual' just like I am 'Katie' and he is 'Bob', she's 'Helen' etc.
The media needs to realise that it's your business and leave it at that, you shouldn't have to clear things up and explain yourself.

Thanks for blogging =)

Take care

It's all in your music and in your lyrics, what more could these people possibly want and ask for?

You're a wonderful human being, Missy, and your music has the ability to change lives (I know it changed mine), and that is all any of us who don't really know you should be concerned about.

Way to stand up for yourself. I'm proud of you.

thanx missy, actually it doesn't have to be explained...but some people just don't understand and sometimes I am in the same situation as you described and I have to make them understand. For me it's normal to fall in love with men or women and I can't understand why people always want to categorize everything.
And by the way; thanx for your songs as well, thanx for giving words to so many thoughts I can't express. hope to see ya soon, Laura (Switzerland)

who gives a shit .. seriously.

the media are like a bunch of clowns on red cordial.

when I think "missy higgins" I think Australian, I think good music.
I don't think about who she is sleeping with.. that's just creepy. As far as the daily telegraph goes with running the story about you on the front page.. seriously... that space would of been better spent on John howard..maybe that would of helped him win the election.. not that that would be a good thing if he did!!

just like my comment is boring..so is the broo har har all about who missy sleeps with.
I bet the **** at fairfax are just jelous that they aren't getting any!!

Good on Ya Missy for standing up for yourself, its so not fair that people twist words around to suit their needs just to get a bit more publicity for themselves or their magazine. I read the article and I think that it sux that your whole comment got blown way out of context. Your sexuality is your business and I know how you feel, as I’ve been in relationships with both men (well if you want to call them that) and women and its not easy to accept yourself when your at that age of self discovery and come to realise that your slightly different to the majority of the world, let alone having everyone know your private business and speculate what they think about it. I like you am a very shy person and question a lot of things about myself and the world and its things like this where people just continually judge one another that makes you really realize that the world is just made up of tooo may self centered people, which is a real shame...Because some of us actually do care and respect others and this beautiful planet that we live on.
So anyway I think you are a truly talented and wonderful person and musician (my absolute idol) and really enjoyed your show the other night at the Brisbane Ent Centre and every other time ive seen you play (Woodford folk fest couple of years back and the Tivoli start of the year) it was so awesome to be sitting 3 rows from the stage and really get that raw and intimate feeling. You are awesome...and you really looked Hot in that dress, I'm glad I was sitting so close. Those who are fortunate enough to know you should feel Totally privileged.

Keep Doing what you’re doing and never question yourself or let people walk all over you. Always stay true to yourself and what you live for and Believe in...Your amazing. And please don't take to long to release a third album.
Stay Safe and always Smile......
Cheers Hayley...from Brisbane XXX

friggn media! wow, so you take something that a popular person says, twist it to sell more to make more money, and in the meantime screw things up a bit for that person, great, now what mr. meida? are you proud, you got the poor gal to crack a bit? and now what? a week later the commotion you stirred is over and people realize that learning a small fact about the popular person doesnt change their own life at all, so they go on, but in the process you damaged someone just a bit, great, you must be proud mr. media. Douchebag!

Like you said awhile back ... " I think everybody, at one time or another, has a little bit of bisexuality in them." Don't worry about what everyone is saying, especially that damned paparazzi. People will say what they will, and if they're too ignorant or bored that they have to delve into another's personal issues, then they can just kindly go jump in front of a truck "thank you very much!" You've probably read this over and over, but I'm gonna say it again...."your an amazingly gifted and talented individual who has touched the ears, eyes and hearts of so many. Thank you for your wonderful music and most importantly thanks for being who YOU are... CHEERS ;)

yeah..i don't really give a flyin frack who you're dating( in a respectful way of course). just keep on making great music is more important than all the ... well all the none music stuff.

also, the part where "Most songwriters or artists begin their art because they need to find a way to express themselves because they have trouble doing it the way everyone else does..." makes total sense. why do they try to make us(an artist myself) explain ourselves anyways?! it makes no sense. if we could've we wouldn't have become artist or songwriter or whatever.

well, end of this boring rant... more importantly, when are we gonna see you here at the states again? come back to california, go climb some rocks and do more shows yeah

I don't understand why some people (including journalist) feel so inclined 2 ask personal questions. If someone is in a lime light 4 their work than that's what should be discussed and asked about in public, not their personal life. What happened with privacy and healthy boundaries?!? Why if someone doesn't want 2 converse about certain (mostly private) things others take it as they're hiding something. It ticks me off that anyone (including Missy) has 2 explain and clarify themselves when some intruder makes assumption based on their personal misunderstanding of an answer. Let the creative people express themselves through their art; and as we know the art comes from that very personal place they want to know about. Missy is very young yet very mature lady and I believe she can handle many more questions of any nature, but why put her in defensive position when there is no need 4. Live and let live....

I have been in relationships with other men and women. I always used to laugh at people when they asked 'so what are you?' I would generally answer with a sarcastic remark such as 'mutant' or 'un-natural'. Being in the public eye cant make it any easier.

I am by far your biggest fan in Newcastle and I will see you at the entertainment centre on Friday 30 Nov. I cant wait.......last time you were here I was sitting next to you at a cafe in Darby Street but I was too shy to say hi.....loser!

ps - my girlfriend is very jealous of you.....he he he

MISSYS OFF TO THAILAND TOMORROW !!!!

Hey Missy,
I’d just like to thank you for being such an awesome inspiration in my life. Your songs have often helped me through a lot of the hard times and blasted out of my car speakers in the good times and I’ve always felt some sort of bond with you. I guess this is because we’re round the same age, have the same name and I sing some of your songs at karaoke too and believe it or not when I do “This is how it goes” (which is my fave to sing) people actually say I sound heaps like you which is an honour ! I’ve watched you come all the way up and am stoked at how well you’re doing now cos after seeing u in concert a few times I know you’re not just an amazing singer but also an awesome artist! After the 1st concert of yours I went to I was raving to everyone about how every song you either played on the piano or guitar as well as singing and it was all beautiful.
I was disappointed to hear all the media hype about your sexuality as well cos no-one - no matter how famous or “every day” they are, deserves to have their personal life delved into! But if it makes you feel slightly better about it I’m sure you’ve encouraged and comforted many people like me who are “fluid” in their sexuality that this is ok and we’re not alone. I too HATE labels and peoples insistence that we “must be something”. You couldn’t have said it any better.

Luv ya – thanx 4 da music – see u 2moro nyt in Newcastle right up the front!! YAY!

P.S. At your last concert in Sydney earlier this year you played “Blind Winter” and said you hadn’t recorded it…I LOVED it – especially the beautifully haunting piano throughout and was so stoked to find it when I pulled out the good old The Special Two single !! Maybe you forgot it was on there!! lol Pleeeassee can you sing it again for us again next time you’re in Newie ?!
