Dark Horse and Myspace.com partnered to present a contest calling for short essays about how Buffy the Vampire Slayer has affected fans' lives. Joss has picked the best of these essays, and the writer of the winning essay will be drawn into an upcoming issue of Joss's current relaunch of Buffy, in the Season Eight comic series. We assumed that this simply meant that someone's picture would be drawn in as an incidental character, but when over the last few days Joss picked the winning entry, he decided to make her more involved.

"I read a lot of moving entries," Joss writes, "but the enormity of Robin Balzer's struggle was overwhelming just to hear about. She deserves a place not just in the book but in the mythology of Buffy. I thought it would be hard to put someone in the book gracefully, but just thinking about Robin opened up not only a cameo character but another branch of the Buffy mythos. She'll appear in issue ten, and it feels as though she's been waiting there already. I'm grateful to her husband Jerrod for sharing their story with me, and for helping build ours."

As often happens, the winner was a little unconventional, an entry that stood out not just for the quality and the scope of what the writer had to say, but the fact that he was writing on behalf of someone else. Here's the winning essay, by Jerrod Balzer.

"I'm writing for my wife, Robin Balzer, for this essay, because she's disabled.

"Robin and I didn't have cable or satellite for years, so we had only seen the original movie of Buffy until the first season came to DVD. At that time, schizophrenia was gradually taking over my wife's mind. Our growing love for the show as each season came out gave something for my wife to focus on and look forward to during those first dark and confusing years. The character Drusilla gave her a fantasy icon to relate to, and kept her spirits up as though she were a part of the story, and of course Buffy's character gave her the strength to battle her 'demons.'

"Now, she's completely disabled from her illness, in and out of coherence, but I keep Buffy and Angel posters on the wall which give her focus even when we're not watching them. We've also become attached to Firefly. Again, she can relate to River in her own way. We really owe a lot to the imagination of Joss Whedon.

"For this reason, I know it would mean the world to my wife, Robin, if she could see herself with Buffy in a comic. For the struggle she consistently goes through, I feel she deserves to be with a character that's helped her so much over the years."

As Joss mentions, Robin will appear in issue ten, which is quite a bit further down the line than we originally planned to feature the winner. But when he told me how he wanted to involve her, it was clear that there could be no better prize.

We thank everyone who sent their moving and complex entries. We're glad that this character has had such a profound effect on so many people. I want to close with a list of the five runners up. In Buffy #10, we'll dedicate a letter column to the contest and to the runners up.

Best,
Scott Allie

Johnny, I wish we could have a dialogue about what you meant.  I'm not sure if you are disappointed or misunderstood the contest.  Robin sounds like she is truly deserving of the prize.  I wish you well, my friend, and perhaps you might consider reframing your reaction as a more positive expression of excitement for the winner.

What is wrong with you?  I can only hope that you & your family do not have to experience something that is as debilitating as the winner & his wife.  Only then will you see the error of your words.

To the winners, congratulations!

Is it bullshit that someone who is nice and deserving won, or that someone who can stoop to that level and say it's bullshit like you didn't?

Good luck with your future- hope you don't lose friends over that snide comment.

To all the kids that haven't yet experienced the trauma we call life & think the winner is BS  - "Suck It Up - One day that could be you!"

I became disabled at 24yr - of course I didn't think it would happen to me. But just like Robin, I have an incredible husband to care for me & Joss's work to keep me delightfully entertained.

So cheers to Joss for choosing such a deserving person & to Robin & her awesome husband Jerrod - you all Rock!!

Sincerely! ♥

First let me say I am not a Buffy fan at all, but I will be reading this special issue and I am really happy to see such a deserving winner.  I am sure this contest has brought about more suprises for the creators and a more in depth look at the fan's who enjoy this series.  Congrats  to Robin and her kick ass husband for writing this for her.

This obviously isn't some hollow, sales-driven, heartless, bottom-line, chromium cover, exploitative grab at pulling in more readers.

It's a genuine synthesis of readership and authorship.

I think it's fucking sweet!

I know the show helped me get through stuff, and gave me something to look forward to during very times.  I'm glad Robyn felt the same way, and it sounds like she was even more connected to the show.  It's a good choice, and she'd benefit more by being put in the comic than most.  I hope it helps her.

Wow! I was so curious about the winner and think Joss made an excellent choice.  I had thought it would just be a silly guest spot...but I am so excited to see how this brave woman is worked into the story.  It sounds like a great match and I hope it will bring some happiness into her dark life.  And I hope you can fit her equally brave and loving husband into the issue as well.  They are both Big Damn Heros!

Do we have any proof?  I think I saw that movie (the dude's story)  on Lifetime!

Good story, though. I could see Treat Williams playing the husband's role in it. If it is real then perhaps it's all for the best. I wouldn't just throw away a great gift like that to some scammer...that's all...

And, um, to those who don't think so, grow the hell up and get over it. You lost, and by the way you're acting, I can thank The Powers That Be for that.

But, anyways, congratulations, Robin! I hope that you enjoy your issue! :-)

Jerrod Balzer, you're a keeper, you are.  My heartfelt thanks for sharing your story in such an tribute to Robin, your wife.  It was an honor to read your Robin's story and I look forward to the #10 issue with a preponderance of impatience.  I think Buffy fans everywhere will be cheering until they're hoarse when that issue is released.

I've already said this at Whedonesque.com, but kudos to Joss in his infinite wisdom and compassion, and big old heart for his selection.  I hope we get a chance to read a selection of entries from those who dared to bare their collective souls about why Buffy and Joss are so meaningful in their lives.  The fandoms of Joss' work are the most special I've been privileged to be around and part of.

Oh my gosh. What a wonderful story. Congrats to all the winners. As far as "Johnnysays... " and "Rebel without a clue" - neither one of you fuckers have a clue and you should have your souls sucked out through straws. Lesson in the first: what goes around comes around you pathetic, sorry wastes of flesh. You aren't worth the qxygen it takes to keep you alive.

This one goes out to Jerrod & Robin. You deserve it girl.Me & My husband have known these two personally for 7 years, We live 4 blocks from one another and are best friends. My husband is disabled too. So Me and Jerrod can relate ..We all knew each other prior to Robin's illness .Watching Robin go through this has changed  all of our lives. We wish there was a magical pill to make her better. Jerrod and Robin are probably two of the most sincere and sweetest people  that you could meet and Robin does not deserve the hand she has been dealt but she take everything in stide and take it one day at a time. . To know these two people is realy amazing. Reading all the comments are just overwhelming to me.

Pending the permission of the runners up (which we're working on), we're going to run them along with Jerrod's essay in the Buffy #10 letter col, in the issue which features Robin's appearance in the comic. We'll talk a little more about the contest and the process there.
Thanks for all the great feedback. It means the world to Jerrod and Robin.

Congratulations to the winners, who truly deserve this shining glimmer of joy and beauty and hope in their lives! What a strong love they share!

And three cheers to Joss, who proves, again and again, that he's gorgeous and compassionate and righteous through and through.

Ask me about spiritual leaders I admire, and I'll name Mr. Rogers and Joss Whedon. One is sweet and darling and innocent, the other sweet and darling and wicked and dark and... good stuff!

Good stuff. Joss makes my heart happy.

I can understand how each person who didn't win, myself included, may feel disappointed because to us our story of how Buffy has effected us may have been just as important as the winners.  I think we need to look at this with a different perspective. We need to see it as we have all won simply for the fact that Joss had created an amazing character and story that we can all relate to in our own way.  I know that the Buffy world was there for me at a difficult time in my life and I am  truly thankful to Joss for bringing Buffy to life for us.  Even though we all wont see ourselves in the pages of a Buffy comic, at least we still get to be a part of this community where we can enjoy a truly amazing experience and to know that we are all a part of the Scooby gang.  Thank you Joss and thank you Buffy.
