According to this, my friend Mike Wieringo died on Sunday of a heart attack.

We were set to do a book together this year, something we've been intending to do for a few years. Things had finally come together, and...

The first thing I said upon seeing this was "No."

I'm going to miss you, Mike. And so will everyone else.

As an on-and-off comic reader I was unfamiliar with his work. Browsing through some of it online I'm sorry I've missed it. I'll see if I can find a graphic novel.

My condolences. While he had been added to my friendslist, I did not get the chance to know him personally. I really enjoyed his artwork and I feel sad knowing he will no longer be with us. It's a shame you guys never got the chance to collaborate on a project together, between your writing and his artwork it would have been amazing. He will be missed. :(

Damn,
Mike wasn't that old really and looked after himself quite well, being a health smart fella. I met him last year at HEROES CON and he was exactly like his art, warm, funny, whimsical and FUN. I was saddened by this news.

Too bad Warren, I would've loved to see what you two had cooking.... An unlikely team up that would've shook the planet. Comics has lost another prince. Go buy Tellos if you haven't yet kids..
Deepest sympathies,

Got that bad-adrenaline-sweat reading that. Horrible, unexpected. He was a brilliant dude. the FF run he did with Waid did that extraordinarily rare thing (Transmet actually being the only other thing that nailed me in this way) - made me really, really "get" the marriage of words & pictures that comics is all about. a true "a-ha!" moment. Mike, you will be missed! So it goes...

I read that piece this morning and instantly thought how amazingly tragic it was. Mike wasn't really all that old and he was a man who generally watched his health and ate right, which is something most of us don't do...it just shows that you never know what can happen on a given day.

The comic world and world in general lost a good one.

I was just reading that earlier, although I don't read enough comics to be familiar with his work. But forty four years is far too young, especially for a guy who built up a career and talent with something like drawing.

Way too young to die like that ... it's a real loss for the industry. He was one of the few artists who could pull off the lighter style of drawing (as in he didn't do grim and gritty and full of lines) even when he was working with storylines that were very dark. His drawings always had a breezy, clean, and innocent style to them, which made him stand out in the industry.

He did some great DC books, but the one that I really liked was Tellos. I always had wished he would do more stories for it, and now that will never happen. I will always remember Tellos that much more fondly now. My condolescences to his family and to his legion of fans.
