Hello Darlings!

Welcome to this the bonus blogette I promised you the other day - I do spoil you. So here I am all shopped out and having a rest before I have to start preparations for tonight's dinner, really it's all go here at Merryweather Towers. It's a dreadfully dreary grey day outside, nothing like the beautiful sunshine we had yesterday for the Winter Solstice Celebrations.

Photobucket

I did go to Isham as planned and saw the famous Witchmen Morris Dancers, and ladies you'll be happy to know that the gentleman still have plenty of lead in their pencils - really they should bottle and sell themselves as "marital aids". It may have been winter but when they dance the sap well and truly rises, I only had to look at the smiles on the faces of the ladies in the crowd to see that they were working their testosterone charged magic.

Photobucket

I even overheard one particular woman give out a little sigh during their "Black and Amber" routine. When they held their sticks to their groins she turned to her friend and said "Goodness that doesn't leave much to the imagination does it?" followed by a "How lovely!"

Photobucket

I must also take a few moments to praise the great musicians that play for the Witchmen, made up of Wives, girlfriends and family they are fantastic; swaying from side to side as they play they really do set the most hypnotic rhythm.

Photobucket

The Witchmen were not the only dancers at the festivities joining in the fun were The Queens Oak (top photo middle),  Bakanalia (middle row left), the Haverhill Harlots (middle row right), the Bourne Borderers (bottom row left), and the Baldock Midnight Morris Dancers (bottom right).

Photobucket

They all danced until just before sunset, it really was the most enjoyable day I've had for a while, though it must be said that none of the others moved me quite so much as the Witchmen, is it because they are all male morris dancers or do they have that extra something that connects us to our roots? I don't know, but whatever it is they've got it.

Photobucket

Mr M took the camcorder and I'm proud to say that I have some edited highlights of The Witchmen to share with you - thank you Mr M!

I do have many more photos which I shall post into my pics section, please feel free to have a wander through my gallery. Thank you once again for the lively comments you posted on my last blog, I do appreciate them and always do my best to leave a reply. Now if you haven't been to my main page today do have a look at the Gin Column, as I've updated it with a rather silly recipe, that should hopefully raise a titter or two.

On Friday I'll post my second almost award winning short story (that came in the final 10 in a National Competition), it'll be a welcome distraction from family that you love but who've outstayed their welcome - you know what I mean; sometimes you can't beat a bit of peace and quiet.

Thank you Simon it really was a great day.

The Witchmen are appearing next at the Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival on Saturday 10th January, I hope to go along; if I do I'll certainly report back on the festivities.

I think that the Witchmen are brilliant, I want the world to discover them!!

That's good to hear Graeme, you know I think you'd make a very good Witchman, of course I'd need to check your stick first.

Thank you Katherine, I'm so glad you enjoyed my blog. Sadly the pics and the video do not do these men justice, they are LOUD when they dance, with lots of tribal shouting and screams, imagine if you will the sound of the Maori Hakker and you're getting close!!

The Witchmen have their own web-page if you fancy a look go to www.witchmen.com just tell them Madame M sent you; I'm sure they'll make you very welcome!

I was so lucky to capture the kiss - I was panning round and was blown a smacker!

Glad you enjoyed it Lainey, as you know I'm a huge fan of eccentricity and the following of old traditions, the Witchmen are the ideal package, tradition with a dark twist. They make me proud to be English.

I've actually seen these chaps at a couple of folk festivals,
I hope you had a good lie down after all that excitement, you don't want to be all burned out for the festive period.

Those fellas are to Morris dancing what the hells angels are to Cycling Proficiency..

They should however be approached with caution, as they think its big to drink lots of flat ale, and wave their sticks at any female that they happen upon..

An observation: , about five pictures up one virile looking chap is leaning back with his Hickory Staff pointing to the heavens. The "Non" business end of the stick is nestled in his "Private" area.

Now, When his opposite number strikes the tip of his stick (With anything greater than 200 Joules/s of Power) , a shockwave will travel down the hickory at 3.6 times** the speed of sound, and energise his noodle.

This is the time that most women should be looking for an escape route...or failing that something to stun the witchman..
With an energised Noodle These men become superhuman, and with half a dozen pints of Greene King IPA inside them, do not stop to listen to reason..

I hope you managed to keep a safe distance!!

**Explanation, the speed of sound or shockwave transmission is proportional to the density of the conductive medium.

Thanks for a lovely blog and fantastic pictures

All the best

Mooney

Ahh Mr Mooney I can always rely on you to throw in a curved ball, in fact I look forward to it.

Your Noodle energising theory is an interesting one, I wonder does the energy field spread to the ladies in the crowd watching; it may explain my sudden urge to devour a meaty chow mein :)

Now look what you've made me say!

Ahh D@H it fairly warms the cockles of my heart to know that the Witchmen worked their magic on you, I thought you'd appreciate them :)

I'm going to watch the video again, and then go and crack open a bottle of home-made elderberry gin, it's something I've been waiting to do for weeks!

Oh course you may add me as a friend, I'd be honoured.

As to my New Year being debt free, well I'm afraid that as a lady I really have no understanding of all things pertaining to finance; preferring as I do to keep my mind focussed on the most important things like hats and gin :)

I have to agree with you about enjoying the delights of a virile man, it's certainly a great way to warm yourself up.

May your Christmas be filled with such comforts. I know what I'm asking to find under the tree this year. How do you wrap a Witchman I wonder?

Dear Madame Merryweather.

Edith and I were just catching up with our 'virtual' correspondence whilst watching back-to-back 'Sorry I've Got No Head' when I came upon your wonderful photos. Down our way we have the delightful 'Hunters Moon Morris' who are very similar but with a tad more blacking (I wonder what they use?) I must agree with you, the sap does indeed rise in the presence of these masters of the dance.

All the best to you and yours for the New Year.
