COMPANIES THAT DO TEST ON ANIMALS...

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are these companies included on the Do Test list?

The following companies manufacture products that ARE tested on animals. Those marked with a t are currently observing a moratorium on (i.e., current suspension of) animal testing. Please encourage them to announce a permanent ban. Listed in parentheses are examples of products manufactured by either the company listed or, if applicable, its parent company. For a complete listing of products manufactured by a company on this list, please visit the companys Web site or contact it directly for more information. Companies on this list may manufacture individual lines of products without animal testing (e.g., Clairol claims that its Herbal Essences line are not animal tested). They have not, however, eliminated animal testing from their entire line of cosmetics and household products.

Similarly, companies on this list may make some products, such as pharmaceuticals, that are required by law to be tested on animals. However, the reason for these companies inclusion is not the required animal testing that they conduct, but rather the animal testing of personal care and household products that is not required by law.

What can be done about animal tests required by law?

Although animal testing of pharmaceuticals and certain chemicals is still mandated by law, the arguments against using animals in cosmetics testing are still valid when applied to the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. These industries are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, respectively, and it is the responsibility of the companies that kill animals in order to bring their products to market to convince the regulatory agencies that there is a better way to determine product safety. PETA is actively working on this front by funding development and validation of non-animal test methods and providing input through our involvement on government advisory committees at both the national and international levels. Companies resist progress because the crude nature of animal tests allows them to market many products that might be determined to be too toxic if cell culture tests were used. Let companies know how you feel about this.

Wow, I had no idea that Melaleuca was on the "does test" list. I have been using their products for a little under a year now. I use them because they are supposed to be environmentally friendly, and I thought they were animal friendly too. Damn it, you just can't trust anyone these days. I have no idea what products I will be able to use, especially on my sons who have both eczema and asthma, and most of the store bought stuff is completely toxic and/or caustic. Some tips on this situation would be most helpful, and greatly appreciated...

Thanks for the information.  I had no idea, it should be manatory to state this on their labels, but then again testing on animals should not done in the first place.  I now see that some companies are putting "Not tested on animals on their labels".  This information at least gives you the knowledge so you have a choice to buy or not.  Testing is so useless and I see alot of these products are for household/cleaning.  Why would they be testing them on animals? How about testing them on the floor or windows, etc.  "This is the way they portray/sell their products in commericals".  We would never test them on our bodies!  Why should animals suffer this burden?  I as a consumer would prefer self testing.  At least I can talk and say, "take is  crap off it's burning my skin". Enough said, I will keep this information and make it a habit to look at the labels from now on.  I will make sure they don't get my money/support anymore.

I'm really upset with this list...As a college student, sometimes the money can get tight but, if I have to pay a few extra dollars to buy John Paul Mitchell hair products and Bath & Body Works body was-I'll do it!!!  I loved suave and even my favorite Ralph Lauren perfume....I could never choose between that perfume and Chanel but, now I know which one I will be buying from now on!!!  I used to question whether or not I wanted the JANE makeup, Revlon makeup or Cover Girl...I used to buy Cover Girl but, have made it a habit to buy Almay, Revlon, JANE and Mary Kay....It's worth the switch if it's not tested on animals...I also hated choosing between Clinique perfumes and my Ralph Lauren-now it's going to be strictly Tommy Hilfiger, Chanel and Clinique for me-NO MORE RALPH LAUREN!!!!-How can people be so cruel-I think before they test on animals-they should consider testing on child molestors in prison or something--if we want to test on anyone other than ourselves....Thank you for these lists....

I only trust those companies that put the "not tested on animals" labels on their product. It's incredible how many big companies commit this kind of atrocity. And I think that one of the biggest problems is that not tested on animals products cost more than the others, because of their genuinity and, SHAMEFUL TO SAY, because companies that do tests on animals are paid by the state!!!!! This happens in Italy, but I think it's not different in the rest of the world.... I want to be helpful, keep my eyes wide open and tell everyone to do the same!!

Love and hope!!

I was shocked the first time I read this to find that almost every product sold in almost every commercial store is tested on animals in some way. Whether it be the final product, or a chemical element that makes up the product, animals are harmed in getting the product to us.

What I found the most disgusting is that often, they are repeating the same unnecessary tests over and over when we already know how to make mascara and lipstick without hurting people with it.

The most awful part of all is seeing what they actually do to animals in the process of testing. Draize tests are the most common in the beauty industry, where a rabbit's eyes are filled with chemicals for up to several weeks to 'see what happens' to their eyes.

If you need more reasons to boycott these companies, here's a very good one:

or
http://www.imforanimals.com/images/main-draize.jpg

Imagine if just 1 of these major companies like Loreal or Proctor & Gamble stopped animal testing ... the chain reaction could put a stop to animal cruelty in the beauty industry once and for all.

xx
