The skinny on the Chargers/Broncos game this week comes down to some temporarily broken instant replay equipment, a terrible Referee call and an unbelievable (Let's call it what it is, Mile High Magic) 2 point conversion.

We'll take it, but Chargers got robbed

Call it whatever you want Broncos Fans but we did get a gift. Referee Ed Hochuli will go down in Broncos lore as the man who blew his wad just a millisecond too soon. Not the kind of wad blown in the bedroom with just his disappointed unsatisfied wife as the victim but in front of millions of people on national TV. I think if Hochuli had his choice he would have taken the early whistle with his wife, clearly this was a "blown" call which he freely admitted afterwards.

Under the rule as it stands the ball did belong to the Broncos because he did blow the whistle before the ball was recovered (Another bad rule that should be amended by the NFL Rules Committee) by the Chargers. The mistake Hochuli made was thinking that Jay Cutler had tried to complete a pass (See the infamous "Tuck Rule") and that his arm had gone forward. It was such a bang, bang play that he didn't give himself the opportunity to quickly think about what he had just seen before he made the call.

It was clearly a human thing to do, he was part of a Referee crew that had basically chased the Broncos and Chargers up and down the field for 59 minutes in a high scoring quickly paced game. In that highly charged atmosphere it would be very easy to make such a mistake. Hochuli is one of the best Referees out there and he wasn't on the take by gamblers taking the Broncos to win, of that I'm sure.

In Close Games you create your own Luck

Long time Broncos fans can attest to this first hand. First of all you have to put yourself in a position to be lucky, then you have to get lucky. Call it Mile High Magic, call it blind stupid luck but when you're the beneficiary of such a gift I don't care what situation you are in or how righteous and fair-minded you might proclaim yourself to be you always take it no matter what.

Mike Shanahan or any other Coach for that matter wouldn't say "Gee Whiz Ed, you blew that one Pal; lets' give the ball back to the Chargers it's the fair thing to do." No, no way, there isn't a single instance where this has ever happened in pro sports why? Not every single bad call or play missed on the field can be reversed, it's impossible when the human element is involved.  The games would all come to a halt or drag on for an eternity if every play was reviewed or if we let camera's and computers be the eyes of a human game. Consider also, that most of the time even human Referees and Officials do make the call right almost 90% of the time which isn't bad for humans.

We're all well… human. Some of the greatest moments in sports history have come on blown calls or players inside the game making boneheaded mistakes. Such is the case with this game. Okay you put this all aside and say…

WOW! What a Great Game!

Jay Cutler is the Man! He not only started the game great he finished it even better. He proved to Broncos Fans he was no quitter and that just because he made one bad play, he wasn't about to give up on the game. Last week the Raiders highlight reel belonged to WR Eddie Royal this week it was all Cutlers. By seasons end I see Cutler in the Pro Bowl as the AFC's best QB statistically. Whether he has all the wins with those stats will ultimately be decided by a terrible Defensive Unit that most improve. More on that in a minute.

I think all Broncos fans would agree this was the greatest game Cutler has played in up to this point in his short career. The wonderful news is there is surely many more to follow. Jay threw the ball 50 times completing it 36 times for 350 yards, 4 TD's and 1 INT. The last 2 completions he made were the most impressive. The Touchdown throw and the 2 point conversion sealed the deal and completed an incredible comeback engineered by Cutler and the great hands of Royal the Super Smurf Rookie. Have I said that Royal has great hands already?

Brandon Marshall caught 18 of those 36 passes (1 for a TD) setting a new Broncos team record once held by the great Rod Smith who had 15 in one game. Any doubters about Marshall not being ready to carry the mantle as one of the elite Super Star WR's in the NFL were torched in this game.

TE Tony Scheffler another great hands man for the Broncos had a fantastic game too with 6 catches for 64 yards and 2 TD's.

Again, this can not be overlooked, the OL of the Broncos gave Cutler all day to get the ball down the field which he did with confidence and pose just like last week. Even with a healthy Chargers LB Shawne Merriman in the line up I'm not so sure the outcome would have been much different. "The surprising start of this young offensive line may be the biggest story early in this NFL season for the Broncos."

Going for the 2 Point Conversion

Honestly I was screaming my head off at the TV cussing Shanahan up one side and down the other for being an idiot. I was still pissed at him for trying to throw that crappy screen pass to Marshall when the Broncos had the ball near the 10 yard line on that 3rd and goal.

Then having the incredible luck of getting the ball after the fumble only to have Cutler throw a TD to Royal, then not kicking the extra point to send the game into OT? WHAT THE HELL WAS HE THINKING?

Before I had a chance to even get over my first massive heart attack they ran another play to Royal and BAM he catches the ball for the 2 point conversion and the improbable win. Only 7 times in NFL History have NFL Coaches gone for a 2 point conversion to win a game and only 2 times has it actually worked. Shanahan raised the odds thanks to the nerve and skill of Jay Cutler and the hands of Eddie Royal.

Bottom line, I'm glad that Shanahan went for 2, I think had we lost the coin flip in OT we'd of lost the game too.

Defensive and Special Teams still on page One

Now it's time to address the negative aspects of the game. One would think that an Offense that spots you a 31 to 17 point lead at the half against one of the best Defensive teams in the NFL should have been enough right? No, sorry it wasn't and without a great OL performance and Cutler's arm the Broncos tremendous offensive effort would have been all for not.

The Broncos did get a little pressure on QB Philip Rivers early in the first half but in the second he was unmolested throwing the ball down the field with ease. We won this shoot out game no thanks to a DL that still can not generate any pressure at all on a QB. Even with a full house blitz, still no pressure on Rivers, at least not enough to stop him.

I was amazed how many times Champ Bailey got beat in this game and even worst yet was the play of CB Karl Paymah. He was torched every time he was on the field. He was responsible for a big TD pass thrown over him as well as interference penalty that put the Chargers in position to score another TD. If I'm Defensive Coordinator Bob Slowik I go back to the drawing board on the pass D and it wouldn't include Paymah.

It wasn't just the pass the Broncos couldn't defend; it was against the run too. If someone told you that LaDainian Tomlinson was held to 26 yards on 10 carries and no TD's you'd say that you'd effectively stopped the Chargers running game and would get a win right? WRONG!

Unfortunately that wasn't the case because another Super Smurf Kick Returner & RB Darren Sproles racked up an unbelievable 317 all purpose yards on the bad tackling and a slow to react defense and special teams units of the Broncos. Sproles ran a 103 yard return back for a TD and 66 yard catch and run for a TD in the game as well. Every time he touched the ball the Broncos let him go for big yards.

The Broncos may make the playoffs this season but if they don't start playing better run and pass D in addition to better special teams kick coverage they could be 1 and done.

Random Notes on the Game:

Jay Cutler schooled another all pro cocky CB in week 2. This time it was the Chargers Antonio Cromartie, who said at the start of the season he hoped to break the single season interception record of 14 set by Dick "Night Train" Lane in 1952 in a 14 game season. Cromartie got beat on almost every play that was directed at him. He was responsible for committing 4 stupid penalties that really cost the Chargers field position and points. So much for his egotistical bravado and records, I bet he rather have the W in the win column instead.

The running game just like in Game 1 was an after thought for Shanahan. Selvin Young had a quite 79 yards and a long of 49 but so far Shanahan has been interested in going on top whether short or deep to move the ball. So far it's worked well but I think he should have tried to slow the pace of the game down a little once they got the commanding lead on the Chargers. You can't eat a big juicy steak every night, once in while you have to throw in a boring salad okay Mike?

LB's DJ Williams, Nate Webster (Who both had a good game in Week 1) and first time starter Boss Bailey contributed very little to a run or pass defensive that was just awful. None of the Broncos DLmen even deserves to be mentioned by name this week.

To the D's credit I will say they at least kept the Chargers to 2 FG's on their final 3 possessions of the game.

Cautiously Optimistic

I'm happy with 2-0 start, because I predicted the Chargers would sweep the Broncos this season. We really are playing with house money early. If we can find a way to beat the Saints at home and we get a win at Kansas City (One of the losses I predicted for the Broncos at the start of the season, doubtful now although we do have trouble when we go to KC) the following week we are in the driver's seat at least for the first half of the season.

What a great 2 weeks of football Broncos Bros' and Girls !!!

I look forward as always to your comments and opinions on the game.

Royal came through with the biggest 2 plays at the end of the game. I'm sure even though he would have liked more touches he was pleased with his game.

I see us beating the Saints, Colston is out and other than Bush the Saints don't have any weapons. Their other WR's have been inconsistent, their D has not played well. The Chiefs might be the worse team in league right now. The Broncos have had trouble when they go to KC but maybe this year they can get a win.

Paymah stinks, Champ didn't have a good game but the D as a whole didn't either. Nice to finally get off the snide with the Bolts.

I agree the d was very bad, i hated that we were up 21-3 at one point only to have to win at the last minute. That being said, it reminded me of some of the old elway games and his game ending heroics. the call was blown, but like mike and mike said and shandy also, the broncos still have to score and get the 2 point conversion. so yes it was a bad call for sd, but they still had a chance to stop us. so i definetly do not feel bad about it. if our defense had held up once or twice we would not have even been in that position. yes we need some work done on "d" but the real test will be after kc. the saints game should be a good one, and we should handle kc, so going 4 and 0 and have the driver seat in the division by beating everyone once is possible. good post. i do hope they tag team with royal and marshall a little more, though it was good to see marshall can be the guy again, after the off-season issues.

The Broncos did have to get the 6 and then the 2 but it's all a mute point if the Ref makes the right call. The game was their's, Hocuhuli gave it to us. I'm happy we won and we'll take it but we have to call a spade a spade.

I think we beat the Saints straight up but i like you orry about a wounded KC team that always even if they have a bad team gives us a tough game at home.

Marshall was money!

Good blog. I told you earlier that the Broncos offense is alot better than Indys. Anyways the D needs a little work you were right on that one. I cant beleive they went for two like that gave me a freakin heart attack, but good that they won the game. I just think its to damb early in the season to be doing that stuff. We totally out played the chargers in the first half, they need to a better job on special teams and stopping the run still. my next weeks prediction is

Broncos 650

Saints 649

because neither team has a great defense

Umm WOW. What a game was that! I am glad that Shanahan went for the 2 point conversion and gave the Chargers a fighting chance to win. I was incredulous at first but then I realized what he was about. I held my breath and hoped that we would still win. No one likes a dirty win, no matter who's fault it was! So at that, I could at least do a victory dance and rub it in my neighbors face!

Shanahan went for 2 because he was nervous about the coin flip. He knew the game being won or lost would have been 50/50 chance with it had the the Chargers won the filp I believe that he thought the Chargers would march down the field and win the game.

I think this was his thought going in.

Rubbing it in is always sweet.

Yes, that was a Lucky Win! 2-0 Go Broncos! Against 2 teams in the AFC west, that's a great start. I do feel the 2 bad calls did us a favor and the Chargers know it, they had several chances, and blew it. My hubby was very upset for the 2 bad calls, (he is a Chargers Fan) and boy did he say bad things.
LOL

I am very proud of Cutler, he had done very well in the whole game, yes that fumble would have cost us the game but on pure luck the Broncos had a second chance and Won! I am also very impressed with Marshall & Royal, awesome job! I believe the Broncos are back from a 2 yr disappointment and hope we keep that going for the rest of the season. I do have to say as well our D needs work or endurance as some have already stated, hopefully we will do well against the Saints next week and I am very optimistic about the Chiefs, provided how they did against the Raiders Sunday. So let's root our boys on and let the Mile High Magic take action!

Go Broncos! I believe in Our BOYS!

Orange & Blue Forever!
Broncos are Back!

I can't image how PO'd your husband must have been. The Broncos got a gift, we have to call it what it is. Had the ball went over to the Chargers win the game. All they have to do is run down the clock and it's done deal.

I think we do have a better chance against the chiefs today as opposed to the start of the season. The Chiefs don't have a QB or a threat a WR. Every time we go into KC it's never a gimme, the Chiefs hate our guts and will be gunning for us. I think if we can play some better D we beat both the Saints and Chiefs.

Mile High Mojoe, Yeah, after the Broncos got that fumble back toward the end of the game, I almost felt sorta squirmy, like I had a hemorrhoid, or worse, there was a Chargers fan in the room. There was something profoundly wrong about it. But... Jay Cutler's twin scores shotly thereafter confirmed one thing. That this dude has arrived. Especially on the two-point conversion. Eddie Royal isn't the biggest receiver in the NFL, and Cutler nailed him in heavy traffic, with after having been chased a little himself. Why couldn't the Broncos kept the Chargers buried after that last kickoff? They had them at their own 16 yard line, for cryin' out loud! The Chargers kept knocking at the door, and got a ball to a receiver within field goal range - who was, by sheer dumb idiot luck, just a little bit out of bounds when he caught it. Why didn't they slam the door? Oh well, they got a win that should have never been, but it was against a team that needed beatin'. Them and Phil Rivers' big, obnoxious pie hole. I was dead wrong about my pick for the score, Mile High Mojoe. I said Broncos 31, Chargers 10. The only shred of correctness in there was that the Broncos won. And that's almost asterisk material. Anyways, Broncos 28, Saints 21.

Exactly the Chargers still did have enough time on the clock to get into FG range and pull the game out and almost did.

The Broncos should have slammed the door shut in the 3rd Q and didn't. Shanahan didn't have any interest in slowing the game down, I think this helped keep the Chargers in the game. I think the Saints game should be an easier one to win. Colston going dwon hurt them, their other WR's are not a big threat. If Bush is stopped we win.

was it bad calls? or was it the football gods enacting revenge against a team that ran up the score twice last year, and talked trash to prove how worthless they really are? no rules were broken. the rules were followed the way they should've been. replay booth is broken = no evidence to overturn. whistle blown = play is dead. we honestly will never know what could've happened if the whistle hadn't been blown. sure you can speculate that sandygayho would've gotten the ball back, but you will never know. this is the NFL after all and crazy stuff tends to happen. the chargers were not robbed in any way whatsoever. in fact, they still had tremendous odds to carry home a big fat W! the 2 pt conversion for the win has only been attempted, what, 7 times? and only successful 3 (counting last night)? give me a break. they got beat. even if shanny's non-aggressive 3rd quarter antics showed up as usual. i'm so angry at how everyone is making such a huge deal about this. this kind of stuff happens all the time. and mostly it isn't in the Broncos favor. for once there were honest mistakes and actual things stopping how things should've gone. for once it WASN'T home town officiating. i mean, come on, how many times has the NFL flat out TRIED to get the colts to win? or the pats? give me a break. hopefully the D will improve or it's gonna be the same case as last year. anyway, right now they're 2 - 0 and that's pretty great!!!!

You make a very good point here, Karma coming home to roost, especially on Rivers. Still I don't see how any objective football fan could say that this game wouldn't have been over had the right call been made on the field. This was the Chargers win, we got lucky we made our own luck by scoring the 6 and then having even more crazy luck by getting the 2.

I'm just as happy as that we got the win but you have to call a spade a spade here. Had the shoe been on the other foot I would have been furious so much so I might have petitioned the NFL on this stupid rule. It's one of the worst and needs to be amended. It may go down in Broncos lore as the worst call ever to go in our favor.

This is valid point made by many Broncos regarding this game. They still had to put the ball in the end zone and get the 2 point conversion and then stop them on the last drive so from that point of view (Broncos Fans view) yes they did earn it. I doubt the Chargers players or fans feel the same way about it.

I coulnd't have summerized it any better myself, man. And I've said it before and I'll say it again, one day Mike Shanahan is going to give me a heart attack. My only problem was that we lost a decent lead, we need to focus more on holding and increasing the lead. Can't wait till the game against the Saints. Bush scares the hell out of me, if he gets to the outside and has any room to run it takes to the house almost every time. If we stop him, it's done deal. The rest of the Saints O is less of a threat.

I'm mixed on the whole increasing the lead thing. I was hoping that we could slow the game down and run out the clock a little better in the second half.

Great Blog, I am having a real hard time being a BRONCO girl livin in charger country on this. No one will let me smack talk, I hate that this win feels tainted, even though I know it was won fair & square. Even as bad as our D was we were able to hold off the chargers in the red zone three times. The charger D could not do that, they held us out once (not counting that pesky int.). Cutler has certainly arrived, this is going to be a GREAT season, I feel it in my orange heart.

That's true, 2 FG's and then we almost let them get in field position for a 3rd. I lived in Carlsbad for a while it is tough to be a Broncos Fan down there, they hate the Broncos as bad as any of the fans in the division.

Thanks Brandy keep that orange heart and blue blood pumping away for our beloved Broncos.

I don't know why Williams isn't on the field. Paymah was a nightmare for us, that's for sure. He couldn't have played much worst. I love watching Broncos games at a bar with a partisan crowd.

i heavily overrated denvers defense on one of your other blogs so i will take those back and say the denver defesne is more pathetic than st louis's because we have talented players who considerably under perform this week. if denver really wants to win this year there needs to be a considerable shake up of the defense. our offense aint going to score 30+ points a game the ones we dont we will lose because of our defense. i am however glad at cutlers performance aside from his boneheaded throw into traffic in the endzone resulting in the interception.
trading foxworth might be the biggest mistake denver could have done on the market. paymah should have been traded. its a good thing colston is out this coming week. itll ease up on some of the pressure our defense will face. i do see saints offense running all over us though. our o-line was great i was so surprised but than again san diego really has no pass rush any more with shawn roid raging merriman out. phillips picked up a lot of double teams in the game. there baic 3-4 is very weak.
some one needs to take sproles out. out out! he kept running over every one who tried tackling him. denver needs to do tackle drills all week. they seemed to have lost there grasp on the basics during the game.
great post man i look forward to reading more down the road and a the season progresses!
keep it up! go broncos!

Thanks Max, the D is a big concern, you're right when you say we can't win every game in a shoot out type way. We must play better run and special teams and the tackling has to improve on both. Every time Sproles got some room and started to motor either A. No one could wrap him up or B. He just outrun everyone, it sucked.

With Colston out the only real threat is Bush and he's big one. He has just as much speed as anyone in the NFL. We have to stop him before he gets to the second level and make GOOD TACKLES!

The OL has been the biggest story so far, it hasn't got much discussion but I sure see the improvement.

HERE KITTY...KITTY...

Once again another great blog. I always read your blogs but this is my first time accually sharing a comment...Anyway, I am so glad I got to watch the last 4 minutes of the game.(I live in Arizona and was forsed to watch the Cards kill Miami.) I watched on the very edge of my seat, I thought when Cutler threw the interseption it was all over for us, but I didn't give up, I just prayed. Then down to the frickin wire with 2 mins to go, OH GOD I was screaming. Biting my nails pulling my hair and telling the kids to leave the room. So then we get that last touch down wooowhooo!!! And like you I was yelling you idot!! Dont do it, dont you dare go for a two pointer. OH then he threw up those fingers....Yeah I thought I was gonna climb through my TV and strangle Shannahan. Oh but we made and I was soo estatic that I accually started to cry from relief. Kinda like a great orgasim. I then ran around the house screaming "GOD, I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!" and proceeded outside to have a smoke. Didn't we have a game like that last year??? Where it was down to the wire with like 14 seconds left and Jason Elam kicked the game winning FG?? I remember feeling the same exact excitment. Anyway, keep up the great informitive Blogs. I love them. and GOD BLESS the DENVER BRONCOS!!!! Heres to a great season!!!

I love your comments, very funny and pretty much described exactly how I felt the last 2 minutes of the game also. It was like a great orgasim. God I love football and I love a great game, it is like great sex when you experience this kind of drama.

Chargers fan here, on wife's account and read your blog. I would like to point out that there was a college football game in which the coach gave the victory to the other team the very next day after he watched the film and it was proven that they were given a fifth down. That takes alot more guts than it does to go for 2 and the win in my book, And Tom Osborne is my hero. However the Colorado coach refused to give the win to missouri when the exact thing happened to him. His reason was that he didn't like the field conditions.

I'm not saying the Shanahan should give us the victory, I don't expect it or want it. But it has happened (college level) in the past.

As for Shanahan's comments about it being the best officiating he has seen in 20 games and giving good scores to the ref's? I have lost alot of respect for him. But then again, I lost alot of respect for good old Tom Osborne when he was shifting his Coach's poll into his favor and ranking a team like BYU 1 when they were 17th by everyone else.

It is nice to see that the Bronco's are back, now I can take my wife to see them in Invesco next year and not worry about a lame game. 2 years ago was incredible - and the decline of the Broncos until now.

Royal has been the spark plug, the young revamped OL has been the engine.
