I brought a paralysing hangover home last night from a weekend of Weimar hedonism and 35mm debauchery. Nick and I went over for the Berlin Film Festival to see the final version of Hallam Foe.

The first time I saw it was in the wee cinema at the GFT with three other people, scribbling ideas for lyrics on a scrap of paper. This time it was in the huge cinema by Potsdamer Platz with sixteen hundred people, who all gasped, sighed, laughed and winced in the right places. Jamie Bell manages to take a slightly creepy character and make him appealing. He's essentially a Peeping Tom, but there's something about the way he's played that makes you feel that it's OK because he's a good guy, really. David MacKenzie has a black sense of humour that I like a lot. There is a scene that is the sickest, funniest, most twisted sex scene I've seen in a film. Not in real life, but definitely in a film.

Hallam Foe won the Silver Bear prize for best music. The song we wrote for it was only a small part of an astounding soundtrack put together by Domino records (AKA best label on the planet). I think I now have a new favourite moment of music in a film: it's the appearance of the song "Here On My Own" by u.n.p.o.c.. The last time I felt those tingles sitting in a cinema was when "Needle In The Hay" sound-tracked the wrist slashing in The Royal Tenenbaums. u.n.p.o.c. is part of the Fence Collective from Fife along with James Yorkston and King Creosote who are also on the soundtrack. Psapp, Sons & Daughters, Juana Molina, Bill Wells and Orange Juice are also among around 30 Domino bands that appear at different points in the film.

I bumped into my cousin in the pub. That doesn't seem too weird, but I live in Glasgow and Aki lives in Athens, so it was odd to walk up to the bar in Berlin and find him standing there. He's a musician too: a drummer, who probably holds the record for the most amount of kick drum hits in a second. If drumming were ever to be used as a WMD, you'd want him on your side.

I saw the FF annual that Anna put together tonight. Very cool. That girl has style.

"Here On My Own" can be heard here http://www.myspace.com/unpoc

I wouldn't coincidentally see any of my cousins anywhere in the states. XD they all live in Colombia. Is there a way to get the movie? It sounds fantasmous, and definitely my kind of movie. If there's a way I can get it all the way out here ((North Carolina, USA)), please let me know. ^__^

Gotta buy the Hallam Foe soundtrack while I am in Glasgow in the beginning of March. Thank you for keeping me up-dated!

Aki huh? That's a pretty cool name. I like Greek names. Like Kapranos for instance...lol  It's great that you continue to update stuff and post blogs, Alex!

The pig is pink without a doubt

And from his pink and noble snout

Come dribbles of the finest snotters

Dripping down to four fine trotters

aha remember?  =]

Hope that the Hallam Foe song comes out in the US...

"Hallam Foe" sounds like something I'd enjoy. I'm not a huge film-watcher, but I'll pretty much watch any film if it's dark-humoured. Hopefully it will be released in the US sometime.

Congrats on the "Silver Bear"! I think all award statues should be in the likeness of a cute animal. Bronze Hamsters. Platinum Puppies. Golden Capybaras.

I am very excited to see the FF annual! I love Anna's work. I have a mental list of people I'd want to collaborate with artistically, and she's on it. (And David Shrigley, but that'll probably never happen.)

Take care and get some rest. That'll ease the hangover.

Thanks for the update Alex.

Audience sympathy for a peeping tom?- hmmm? -  reminds me of the movie "Peeping Tom" by director Michael Powell, which I know was a movie referenced in your Walk Away video. Seems there are a lot of coincidences going on the the Franziverse these days besides meeting your cousin in a pub in Berlin. :-)

Congratulations on another award and thanks for making yet another wonderful song.  I'm glad you guys had fun in Berlin.

As always...We look forward to your next post. :-)

I'm the same girl "Tanto Deseo", i always post you with my other myspace, that belongs to my new project, an erotic art gallery, some day i'll tell you how my decission to do this is connected to you!

Anyways, gosh, am I glad you mentioned the Annual, I cannot wait for it to come out! The first thing I'm doing as soon as I get the new FF:FC issue is order the annual.

Must've been a nice surprise to jumst bump into your cousin like that, and as someone said, Aki's an awesome name, as would seem all Greek people have awesome names and last names.

"Best label on the planet," eh? Well, aren't you unbiased

which reminds me of a beautiful Masaoka Shiki haiku, (I'll try a quick english translation, but in japanese it sounds better)

no Budhas
no Gods
for me, automn winds

Congrats to you, David MacKenzie and everyone at Domino records on the Silver Bear. Hopefully they show Hallam Foe over here in the U.S. because it seems like a great film. Another David MacKenzie film I enjoyed was Young Adam and that had some pretty twisted sex scenes if you ask me.

Yay! I can't wait until the FF annual comes out so I can see what Anna did on it.  I'm sure she did a nice job on it since you say it's very cool.

One more thing, I'm sure knew that Gael Garcia Bernal was on the International Jury so did you by any chance get to meet the guy? Just wondering that's all.

Alex, next time take 2 aspirin and a full glass of water and you'll wake up hangover free!!  (well that's what they say anyways)  Hangovers are caused by dehydration.

Way to go on the silver bear!!  Who else performs on the soundtrack??  Sounds like a  most see, and most buy!!  I'll add that to my wishlist.  I do hope it comes to the States.  Hope you guy's come to the States again soon!!  Another ACL fest perhaps?? That would be awesome!!  XxXoOx ~Amy~

Hey Alex.
Congrats on the Silver Bear. Everything sounds amazing.
Ah. Akis Kapranos. I'm greek and I know him. I think he was the drummer of the band Septic Flesh. Maybe I'm wrong but I've heard of your cousin.
Anyway, I hope to see the movie here too.

Greetings,

Nikos

I've just heard "Here on my own", and I kind of like it. But probably isn't the same without Hallam Foe in sight... So, I'll just have to wait next few years, cause that's how much it will take for the film to come here, middle of nowhere, Croatia. If I'm lucky, I will get it somewhere over the Net, illegaly, but shhhhh, you haven't read this. Like you will, haha. But I can understand, cause, from what I see, girls are pretty histeric when it comes to Franz Ferdinand, especially you, you poor guy. But you handle it quite ok. Well, anyhow, I'm not one of those histeric ones, just trying to comment the music and the unseen movie I look forward to see. One day. Good luck with the hangover.

The soundtrack CD hasn't been released yet, or has it?

I watched the awards because I knew Hallam Foe was going to win something and when I heard it was an award for best music I just went "I told you so!!!" with all the people I've been "pestering" with your song in the last 15 days. They agreed with me, though.

Music is really important in a movie, in my opinion. Mr. MacKenzie had a wonderful idea in getting Domino involved in his project.

And is was great to see you and Nick there.

Thanks for the update, Alex.

Alright, you've touched a soft spot of mine: The Royal Tenenbaums. I share the same feeling and it was only through this movie that I could ever bear to listen to Elliott Smith. (Poor bugger.)  Ever. Again. HE WOULD WANT IT THAT WAY!

Soft spot 2: Domino. I want to be their über cool copy girl that swanks through the hallway tossing copies on desks as if life were Sondheim-penned musical. Beat that, Sub Pop.

It sucks I'm in a place I have to go to the library to catch me some Kurosawa....looks like its DOWNLOAD time for me with Hallam Foe. I wanted to see it in a movie theatre so go ahead now, watch me pout. :(   ...online.
