Current mood:  excited
Hello all,

I have been inundated with requests about the trailer for Southland
Tales... and I am sorry to say that it does not yet exist:( Sorry everyone...
but I promise we are getting closer!

We are still in the process of getting the budget approved to finish
all of the additional visual effects in the final cut. There were many missing
and incomplete visual effects in the Cannes version, so expect lots of
improvements! Fingers crossed that we get the additional money...

Release date has not been decided upon, as the distribution plans are
still in the works.

We are in advanced negotiations for a soundtrack deal for Southland
Tales, but until there is a locked release date... we won't know for sure.

The graphic novels are done... so I hope everyone is checking out The
Prequel Saga. I really believe that the people who read the books will
enjoy the film a lot more on their first viewing.

Casting is still underway on The Box... but we will not start filming
until later this year... as there is still work to be done in the Southland.

In the meantime... I have been hired by Fox to write a big action film
for [FAMOUS DIRECTOR]. It is a remake of a film released in 1971...

I've already started writing... and will have it finished in the next
9-10 weeks... right about the time I hope to have this whole Southland Tales
thing out of my system... once and for all... for the love of God... if
he is not dead, per The New York Times.

Best,

RK

You're writing a new movie ! Ooooh! A movie from 1971! Ooooh!
Please tell me this won't turn into the same situation that happened with the movie Holes...LOL omg. I totally wish they would have stuck with your script though.
But yeah! Now you've got me all curious!
And ... STILL WAITING FOR SOUTHLAND TALES!
Everytime I see a trailer that comes on TV for like, a movie with Sarah Michelle Gellar
in it, I always perk up like, "IS THAT IT?! IS THAT IT!? IS THAT THE SOUTHLAND TALES TRAILER!?" and then it ends up being The Grudge 2 or something.

Is it A Clockwork Orange?
Wasn't the guy that directed it the same guy that did Lolita and Eyes Wide Shut? I remember you mentioning both of those movies on a certain Cast/Crew Commentary of yours ...

Clockwork Orange isn't an action movie and remaking it would be sacrilege. Hmm, Duel was that year and is also a Richard Matheson story...but I don't think Duel is "big" but the major director could be Spielberg. Get Carter and Shaft have been already been remade..The Omega Man is another Richard Matheson but the book it is based on is already being remade as its orginal title "I Am Legend"... I don't know.

Oh, I must have skipped the word, "action" when I was reading what Richard wrote.
Wow, I'm smart.
I never saw A Clockwork Orange anyway.

Cool! Do you think you could have Southland Tales released around May this year? I'm traveling around the world (starting two weeks from now) and I am going to be in Los Angeles in May. That would be great :-P

It isn't The Omega Man.  That remake's coming out later this year, in essence, as I Am Legend, starring Will Smith and directed by Francis Lawrence (Constantine).

It's Vanishing Point.

Good luck, mate - sorry to hear about the drubbing at Cannes :(

If you're schedule opens up (ha!) and you don't think of mini-series work as 'slumming', let me know. Would much rather have a strong writer/director combo with similar vision as opposed to fractured network bullshit.

Supportive vibes from drizzly Vancouver climes!

Your writing is unparalleled in Hollyweird.  I cannot wait for Southland Tales… I know whatever you’ve got up your sleeve has got to be worthwhile… as for the remake writing… that’s great!  Richard K’s flair and panache on a screenplay worthy of a remake… again, I’m all in, betting on awesomeness.  Seeing an original voice in screenwriting not churning out the same schlock every time is exactly what the world needs.

I have to blame the IMDB, if only because of the link at the bottom of the home page.
My guess for the movie your involved with is,...... Dirty Harry the Clint Eastwood opus to the moors of the early 70's.
A video game has been in production for quite some time, I guess it only seems natural to follow that up with a remake.
If this is true, stop now. Your wading into water that is much to deep for anyone.
Eastwood himself could not remake this film.
Dude... Seriously, what the hell is with all these remakes....Er...  reimaginings?

Hell,Eastwood himself failed every time he tried to capture lightning in a bottle, "Dead Pool" anyone Liam Neeson and Jim Carrey in the same movie, bet we never see that happen again.

Best of luck to you and Southland I will go see it, just leave the .44 magnum "The most powerful handgun in the world" locked in the gun safe.

Say there, I notice you're listening to the new Arcade Fire album. My thoughts: Why do we need another version of "No Cars Go"? I really don't enjoy that song now that I have to listen to it again. However, the rest of the album is pretty earthshattering (I'm stuck on "Keep the Car Running" and "My Body is a Cage").

My cat sleeps on the radiator.

Sony would be insane to not have a SOUTHLAND TALES teaser attached to every print of SPIDER-MAN 3.  I'm also hoping  you have the go-head for a "From the Creator of Donnie Darko" title card, using that familiar font...

One of the things that we are adding to the final cut of the film is an animation sequence near the beginning that helps recap the essential information from books I-III.

So will your  version of Vanishing Point have any sort of sci-fi bent?  You seem to like the drugged-out-in-the-desert idea (Southland Tales, Domino), and who doesn't, frankly, and after reading In Harm's Way a while back I was curious how you might handle the hallucinations in the Optimistic script.  I can see why you would choose Vanishing--man has to beat the clock and drive through the desert while evading the authorities--and for as much as I love it I think there's plenty of room for you to inject your own voice.  We know points A and B in the film, but there's so much room in between...really looking forward to it, as well as finding out who will direct it...let's hope there's no desire to blare what passes for "hard rock" these days over the soundtrack.  Here's looking to Southland Tales, the Box, hopefully Bessie (!) at some point, and everything else you work on.  --craig

I'm with you! Donnie Darko is my favourite movie (I love the luster shot) and Domino is incredibly structurated (the sequence with the diagrams, the flashbacks, the phantasmagoric sequences...) It inspire me and give me power to be director.

Good luck ! I hope It will be more easy for Southland Tales.
Thanks to make movie like that, thanks to exist.

Richard,

I have been dying to read the graphic novels, but alas I am a poor college student. I went to my local Barnes and Noble (Georgia Tech actually has its own B&N branded bookstore), and they had not recieved any in. After asking around, I found that there was supposed to be a book containing all three of the novels released in December. (Something I can actually afford!) They gave me the number of the publisher, but I have yet to call them. I thought I would ask you first.

Amazon lists it, but it isn't out there either. Do you know when this is coming out? Everyone has been talking about how awesome the novels are, and I feel like I am SO missing out!

I am actually hopping over to the other coast in July, so if you and Kev are doing the booksigning still, I will probably be there!

Can't wait for Southland Tales.

P.S. The Killers are one of the few "newer" bands I have been able to get behind as of late. Finally a band who has a whole album I can listen to vs. the one-hit wonders that pervade MTV! ;)

Jared,

There will be a compilation of all three books released -- right around when the movie is released. The compilation artwork that appears on Amazon.com is temp and not the final art, nor is it called The Prelude Saga... but the Prequel Saga:)

You can get books I-III at comic book stores, on amazon.com and at Virgin Megastore (which should be stocking them).

Hope you enjoy the books!
