Over the last couple of days, a few people have asked me what's up with
"this Donnie Darko sequel."

So to set the record straight, here's a few facts I'd like to share
with you all - I haven't read this script.
I have absolutely no involvement with this production, nor will I ever
be involved.

I have no control over the rights from our original film, and neither I
nor my producing partner Sean McKittrick stand to make any money from
this film.

Now . . . I will leave you with some good news!

The last few months have been an amazing time for us on the editing of
The Box.

We're starting to work with a very famous band who is honoring us with
being the first fillmmakers they've ever scored a film with.

Hopefully there will be an announcement soon about who it is!

Keep the faith,

RK

It is a good news that you have nothing to deal with this Donnie Darko sequel.
DD do not need any prequel, sequel or anything else...
This movie is cult for different reasons, and more than everything it is a beginning and an end...

Wish you the best for The Box 's score!

There shouldn't be a Donnie Darko sequel.
Hopefully people will leave it alone.

I look forward to finding out which band it is.

Donnie is brilliant and I am willing to burn the production sets to the ground in honor of your original film. Douchebags involved with this should be ashamed.

Although I am saddened yet strangely curious about the sequal (I hear its about Donnie's sister Sam) I am happy to hear you have nothing to do with this straight to video cash-in...

I'm glad to hear you aren't involved with the sequel...I was really worried when on www.fangoria.com the new director was quoted as saying there would be more "rabbits", when the fact that there was one rabbit in the first film was entirely inconsequential to the story (though it was a striking image).

Too bad they're going ahead with it.

I am really looking forward to "The Box", sounds promising. :)

I'm guessing the band is... Radiohead? Haha...

(That's who I would use to score a flick).

How did the rights for Donnie Darko end up with a company that had nothing to do with the original movie? It's tragic.

And as for the soundtrack for the box: I place my bets on Radiohead.

My two cents on this matter: http://cinemascopian.com/2008/05/12/richard-kelly-on-that-donnie-darko-sequel/

I was thinking maybe the cast/crew of Darko could throw in money to stop the film being made...? possible since half of them are loaded now... Jake Gyllenhaal....

Can't wait for The Box, should be great, the 3 bands mentioned I personally don't like at all but hey film music from a band or artist can be much much better then there normal music ala. Neil Young with Dead Man

concerning the band - hope it would be The Killers ;)

My God what's wrong with Hollywood! You can't make a sequel to Donnie Darko. Oh well better that you're not involved because I think it's going to tank big-time. A true fan would never go and see a sequel of it, it would tarnish the memory of a fine and classic piece of cinema.

I submitted this story to Slice of Sci-Fi news. I don't know if they'll carry it, but maybe we can create enough of a fan uproar to at least keep people who loved the first movie away in droves.

i don't know who arcade fire is, but if they're indie rock, i will be disapointed.

my vote's would be :

tool (although i doubt they ever would have anything to do with a film that they don't have creative control over)

the mars volta

muse

and on the bright side of that whole s. darko thing, at least the actress who played sam is freakin hot now.

All right everybody, I may be over thinking and over analyzing this a little too much, but I think it’s TOOL. For the subject, why didn’t he just write The Box and Donnie Darko? Why did he add “Too” at the end? He might as well of just added the L. Also, in Donnie Darko when the engine is being carried away on the truck, the center of the engine has the fibonacci spiral on it, which Richard Kelly gives a few seconds for our brains to recollect on the meaning before fading into the next scene. Tool has used the fibonacci sequence and spiral in many ways, trying to tell us that we should live our lives in the ever expanding, always looking out kind of way. Now, as far as movies, Adam Jones their guitarist has does special effects and makeup on movies such as Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, Dances with Wolves, Ghostbusters and Freddy movies. As well as directing all their music videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FQdEVd-99o

exactly : D.D does not need a sequel, the original one has it all , it s a full circle, it s complete and perfect, no need to add anything to it cos that would only remove something from it, everything bout it is a masterpiece

Is a DD sequel dumb? YES. I would also like to point out that we live and choose to live in America where its all about making money. Thats definitely the 1 priority I think we can all agree on that. So if they want to do their little DD sequel then they should, its not like you HAVE to go see it or support it if you dont want to. Hell half of you saying its dumb to be making a sequel to DD probably will go see it anyway and secretly like it....including MYSELF. But once again, The Arcade Fire+Richard Kelly+The Box=AWESOMENESS.

I was a huge fan of Donnie Darko. Even The Director's Cut. But, a sequel, is a bad idea. And it's good to know that the ORIGINAL director is not involved. I also signed a petition. To stop it.

Also, good choice on redoing the song Mad World. I love it so much better that way.

Richard I watched the Southland Tales last night on DVD.
I want to say it was really good; I adore your visuals that you gave it. I fell in love with the ALternate 2008 so to speak. When I saw the ending..what crossed my mind? A sequel. But if u do give Southland a sequel make it a completely different story and new charactors it will make the storyline fresh. And I love the satire in it too. Both right and left should poked fun at. Just wanna say I love the movie.
By the way I watched Donnie Darko too...I love the soundtrack on it too.

Wow, I can't believe that 20th Century Fox would make a Darko sequel without you at the helm, much less without your permission or input. Anyhow, I thought that Fox only had the distribution rights and not the sequel rights. I know that you yourself have stated that you wouldn't ever make a sequel to Donnie Darko because you didn't want to exploit the story or the characters, which have become so beloved by fans. So WTF is up with Fox!? This is exactly the sort of thing about Hollywood that makes me so mad. There's no respect for artistic vision. It's all about money. I'll be avoiding "S. Darko" like the plague and only because I loved the original film so much and I don't think that they should have taken your creation away from you. That's all I have to say about that.

On the upside, I can't wait for "The Box". :)

Peace,

GTFO- that is good news!  I wasn't impressed with the "sequal" and I doubt many fans of the original were, either.

Apparently the rights to just about any creative endevour can be snatched up by any schmuck with a Visa and the ability to find the ON button on a camera... it's disgusting, but I guess that's why they say litigation is a bitch.   :P
