Current mood:  creative
There is one more day left in the year 2008.... absolutely unbelievable. I think it is safe to say this has been one of the most, if not the most eventful year of my life. In some ways it's hard to believe that the last 364 days have come and gone as quickly as it seemed, and it other ways, it seems like certain parts of it were ages ago. It was just around this time last year that we were quite literally gearing up to do the show... all the feelings of anxiousness, anticipation, trepidation and excitement of what was to come. Wow, it's a good thing I had no idea, maybe I would have backed out, as there is nothing  that can adequately prepare you for that experience. However that being said, I would definitely do it again if I had to. It was fun, and it was hard. Now I think about those people who are about to embark on that journey, I certainly wish them well and give them this bit of encouragement... hang on.

Now here I am a year later, and I often reflect on the experience and how it's effected my life. In some ways, I feel exactly the same... nervous, insecure and nerdy, and of course my family and faith remains the most important part of my life, but it would be a lie to say that there hasn't been any change, of course there has been change... My perspective has broadened,  I have developed a smidgeon of mental toughness and I think I might have grown slightly in confidence and strength, yet felt very humbled in the process. I'm not sure if it is really a confidence in myself, but more in a confidence in the knowledge that this is what I'm supposed to do... therefore I am doing it, even with an uncertain outcome. While the way has been prepared, and I have tried to be faithful in following it, it has brought forth some tremendous challenges... I have stumbled, been forced to my knees and spent lots of time questioning myself . I guess anything really worthwhile comes with it's fair share of hard stuff right? Trust me, I am trying to learn from my frequent mistakes... and I am finding out that the more I experience the less I understand. But I haven't stopped trying to grasp the complexities of life, I guess being a "pwatamist" dooms me to an eternal analysis of this world and the people who live in it, and why we are... the way we are... make sense? Nevermind. Any who, I guess what I am trying to say is, I'm just doing my best. I know there are no garauntees, so much is beyond my control, but I will most definitely do what I can with what I got... and then look to the heavens to fill in the blanks.

I have some of my own plans, but if there is one thing I have learned, it is that plans are made to be broken. So my plans are flexible, not rigid... I mean I'm an artist, and so my plan is to make art... whatever that means. That being said, I have decided to set a particular goal, and by saying it out loud makes me more accountable... after all we are in the season of resolutions and goal settings. I have about ten songs written, a few of them I happen to like a lot actually. But I need more... I need to write more, SO my goal is to write ten songs in the month of January. This is going to be particularly difficult for me as I am great at starting and not super great at finishing. I often times wonder if I have A.D.D., probably. BUT I am putting a bit of that mental toughness to work, and going to buckle down and get to work, get to starting and get to finishing. I love music, but truth is writing is hard. Well it is for me, cause it's personal, emotional and vulnerable. Not that it's always my story I'm telling, but I still feel like in order to get the good stuff, you have to be willing to go diving for it, a little exhausting but usually very rewarding when truly sought after and discovered. They don't all turn out great, but there are a few gems that turn up. These are songs that hopefully you will get to hear sometime in the near future so... wish me luck!

So here we go friends, lets make 2009 a year of greatness and goodness. I want to thank you, for everything. How vague and generic does that sound? But really, there is just so much, and even as wordy and long winded as I am I'm not sure how to adequately put it into words that say it right. But I appreciate you listening, reading, sharing, feeling and being a part of my little corner of the world. Your support and care are wonderful blessings and I am grateful. Please be well, continue to struggle and enjoy the lives you lead and let us all strive for the best with in us, and give. You're good... thank you.

I know this is a little late but, Merry Christmas or Happy Hannukah... and I'm just a tiny bit early with Happy New Year... but really I just want to wish you a very Happy Everything!!!

First let me say that I cannot wait to hear your new songs!!! I'm sure they'll be as amazing as you are. But really, Brooke, I just want to thank you. I know I've said it time and time again, but you are my lifesaver. You completely gave me the confidence that I could get healthy and made me want to. While I continue to stuggle along my journey, I have your voice in the back of my head reminding me to be strong, and that is worth more than anything. It's helped me through some of my lowest lows these past few months and I can't even begin to express my gratitude. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Hopefully you'll come back to Portland at somepoint and you can see the new and improved, healthier me... all thanks to you and the encouragement you gave me in Kansas City. So with that, I wish nothing but the best for you in 2009. May all of your hopes and dreams come true, may you continue to be the wonderful, amazing, authentic, genuine person you are, and may you continue to touch lives like you have touched mine.
God bless!!

WOW, 10 songs in one month! You are the woman. I've gone a bit of songwriting (a very small bit) and I honestly can't even fathom busting out 10 songs in a month. Dang girl. That being said...I am positive that you can do it. I've been able to witness some really beautiful moments by you (via American Idol) and I just hope you know that you don't have to feel inadequate to make music. All you have to worry about is being who God has made you to be...and that will be enough. For Him, for us and for you. Happy New Year to you as well! And I have to ask...do you have plans of watching "the show" this next season as it's coming up??

Dear Brooke,

When you said: "I'm not sure if it is really a confidence in myself, but more in a confidence in the knowledge that this is what I'm supposed to do..."

You nailed it. Yes, this IS what you were supposed to do.
You are so good at it, how can you not pour yourself into making music?

Congrats on those 10 new songs, and good luck with the next ten. There is a great quote from a famous author (I forget which one!) that goes something like this: "Writing is easy. You just sit down and open up a vein." Yeah. So.
Get to work!

Can't wait to hear the fruits of your labors. I have full confidence it will be awesome as long as it comes from your heart.

Your fan forever,

D

Brooke, if you ever decide that one of those songs isn't worth recording, still share with us here :) All of your fans are dying to hear your voice again, even if it's a little diddy. It has been wonderful to read your blogs, you share so much with us it's like we are all your close, personal friends. Instead of a generic advertising "blog", we get you and your essence in your writing. Ok Now I'm just sounding cheezy :) Have a wonderful and thought-provoking new year.

Aww Brooke, you've left me a little teary-eyed while reading this blog. You are such a brilliant writer.

2008 has been quite amazing. My unprecedented decision to follow Idol this year lead me to embark on a life-altering journey. I've developed a newfound love for music and forged so many new friendships. I have YOU to thank for all of these wonderful changes! Thanks for being a constant inspiration. It's been such a joy to watch you blossom as an artist on the show, along the tour, and beyond. I'm very much looking forward to all of your projects in the upcoming year and hearing your new material.
I have complete confidence that you will continue to change the world through your music, compassion and sparkling personality!
Cheers to an incredible 2008, and a toast to an even more outstanding 2009! Happy New Year, Sunshine! :)

Love from a fellow pwatamist,

Elizabeth ♥

Brooke, you are such an amazing person, and I know that only greatness is coming your way. Not only because of your beautiful voice, but the way you carry yourself is so inspiring. Through all of the craziness of last year, you always seemed so calm and collected at all of the shows and signings I went to last year. Which, by the way, was like 5 shows. haha, I actually told you that, too. (That you were always calm through all of the... organized chaos?) Anyways, I admire you the way I admire David Archuleta. You both are so generous, and stayed true to yourselves. That's probably the most important thing you could have done. I just can't wait for you to release an album.
Keep up with the writing! I know you'll do great!

You and I are alot a like... I'm having the same problem with the writing part of songs... It's difficult... I too struggled with coinfidence in my voice.. But after watching you on Idol I gained that coinfidence and now all I have to do is play my guitar and FINISH a song... THANKS for being a GREAT ROLE MODEL!!!!!

Wow 10 songs. You know that sounds like a great idea actually. I'm the same way in that I don't finish my songs. Not unless there is a deadline or the few times it just comes to me. But that actually may be a great idea for me to. Tho I just tend to do lyrics. Still have to figure out how to get that music out of my head and into music notes a little faster. haha.

10 Songs. 1 Month. A New Year. And No Boundaries.
You can do it Brooke!

Happy New Year Brooke!

Jeremy

PS I'll let you know how those 10 songs come along for me. You'll probably have 10 amazing ones before I have 2 total haha.

You could hold a songwriting contest of your own to find a song from someone... or to write a song with someone.. *hint* *hint* :) :) :)

I definitely know where you're coming from with the whole songwriting thing. Although I've been writing them for a long time, letting other people hear them is something I only recently decided to do, to me it is like putting yourself out there naked for the world to see.
BTW, everyone loved mine so far, so my fears were unfounded, as yours will be! I can't wait to hear them!

Aw, Brooke. This was really sweet. I'm so happy you had such an amazing year, and I honestly had such an amazing year too! It started off with being able to view you and the other amazing idols every week on TV, and then I got to meet you guys at the tour twice! And give you guys this yearbooks which I could tell you really greatly appreciated. And my year didn't get bad from there either. The hope and inspiration you give me is wonderous and I can't repay you. I know it'll continue on to 2009 and the rest of my life, honestly.
:) Have a FABULOUS new year!

Each and everyone of you have a great future in front of you and I am looking forward to seeing you moving on with your solo careers. I have no doubt that you will succeed in whatever you do ( ex. singing, writing, etc.). That said I want to wish you and yours a Happy New Year.

Anyway, Happy New Year, or should I say "Happy Everything!". Even though you didn't come all the way just yet, it's inspiring that you still think positively about things and are greatful for what did turn out. You.

Hi Brooke,

Yesterday I was listening to Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark for the first time in ages, and I thought of you. Joni is in a league all her own but I think you could be a Joni Mitchell for your generation, by using your honesty and vulnerability in your songwriting. I'll bet she's one of your musical heroes.

As far as starting to write and not finishing a song, I sure know that tune! I'm hoping one day I might be able to combine one unfinished song with another and make one great song. Justin Hayward did this with the Moody Blues song, "Question" and I've heard of other songwriters who've done the same thing.

Ten songs in a month is a pretty tough goal but you can do it.
I wish you all the best with that!

Thanks for brightening up the year with your talent and your incredible sweetness. I'm looking forward to hearing more from you in 2009.
