We know there have been a lot of rumors flying around about why Michael Nordeen is no longer in THE HUMAN ABSTRACT and the recording process of "Midheaven"...

here's the truth:

Michael Nordeen is one of the nicest dudes and one of the best friends anyone could ever ask for. We originally met Mike when his old band With Passion played a show with us in bakersfield on one of our first tours ever. He blew us away with his stage performance, we kept in contact with him, and when we needed a new bassist, he was at the top of our list. He dropped everything for the band, moved from nor cal to so cal and toured with us extensively for almost a year. Mike played bass live in the band from may of 07 to april of 08. He joined us on tours with it dies today, the chariot, misery signals, shai hulud, warped tour, and take action tour. Ask anyone who has ever met and hung out with Mike, he is a genuinely awesome person, its rare that you run into a brother as cool as Michael Nordeen.

We recorded in jan/feb and April of this year at Red Bull studios in santa monica ca. I could go on about what happened in the early stages of our studio time, but that wouldn't be right, if you really want to know the truth about what happened ask us in person.

When we first started hearing the Mixes that were nearing completion we immediately took the project to a close friend Leonard Simone. we worked with Leonard Simone and Jesse E. String for 3 weeks (which was all the time we had left before our deadline) on re recording as many parts as we could, re-arranging song structures, adding samples and textures to each track, and re mixing and mastering the entire record. Unlike "Nocturne" we did not edit drums, we did not add drum samples to make things sound more machinelike, guitar lines were played straight through, no note by note bullshit, we did not use any auto tune on vocals, everything that you hear on the new record is as we played it. dont get me wrong, record making technology is quite incredible, and we enjoy listening to pristine recordings done with modern day technology, this just wasnt what we were going for with this record. We want to help bring musicianship back into the recording world... nowadays everything that you hear thats so "huge" and machine like is 100% pro tools editing garbage. Listen to some prog rock albums from the 70's those musicians were absolutely incredible! they would have to record everything perfectly live, without punching in or editing parts EVER. It is nice to have technology for convenience, but its a shame that a lot of people rely on it instead of working hard to be good at their instruments. We are extremely proud of the "concept" album that we have created, we pulled from a lot of influences for this record and we have created an album that doesn't sound like anything i have ever heard. For everyone who wants us to create another Nocturne... keep on listening to Nocturne... because we will never write and record the same record twice. It makes sense... bands find a sound that sells, and they copy that same sound with different songs OVER AND OVER AND OVER to guarantee a similar paycheck... where is the creativity or ingenuity in this?

Once we took the Red Bull mixes to Leonard Simone we realized that Michael Nordeens bass takes were nowhere near acceptable. We were forced to make one of the hardest decisions we've ever had to make and we had to let Mike go from THA. For everyone who doesnt know, Michael Nordeen did not record on Nocturne. We argued for days about having to do it, and wanted nothing more than to have Mike stay in the band but at the end of the day, we needed someone who was up to par with his instrument. Sean Hurley, a studio amazing musician, and friend of Leonard Simone recorded all of the bass for "Midheaven" (minus two songs that Dean Herrera recorded bass on). Its truely incredible to watch a studio musician work... Sean Hurley was able to listen to a song once, write down chord charts, and nail the entire song with so much feeling and groove in 1-2 takes.

Allen Eason has been a longtime friend of our singer Nathan Ells. He is currently filling in on bass for live shows. you can check his myspace page out HERE. He is a truly great bassist... watch his videos, you will be convinced.

We are very excited about the release of our new record and our new and improved live show in the months to come. Hope to see you all on warped tour and our big upcoming fall tour. We appreciate all the continued support you have all shown us more than you will ever know.

Mike was a really awesome, talented dude. He'll be missed, but like everything else in life, you must move on. As for this...

"For everyone who wants us to create another Nocturne... keep on listening to Nocturne... because we will never write and record the same record twice. It makes sense.... bands find a sound that sells, and they copy that same sound with different songs OVER AND OVER AND OVER to guarantee a similar paycheck... where is the creativity or ingenuity in this?"

Nicely said. I wish you guys the best of luck in your future endeavors... you know this.

Yes this not making the same album again things is working out very well for Atreyu and Avenged. Among many others. It's not quite as rare to come across a band doing something different like people act like it is. And even though many people have talked a lot of shit about new album froms well known bands they're all still doing just fine. More often than not the people talking shit end up liking it after a while anyay. When people stop being stubborn and just listen to things open mindedly they usually change their minds.

best of luck to THA

lol, Atreyu and Avenged are complete shit now. i loved atreyu's "the curse" and avenged's "waking the fallen" but their new shit is so horrible. i'm sure THA will never become that horrible. anyways, i'm interested in hearing this new bassist.

Damn. I could see from the video updates that there was something fishy about that Toby Wright guy. He really seemed like he never wanted to be in that studio haha. Anyway, bad news about Nordeen. Awesome bassist, unfortunate you guys have to see him go.

That's incredibly sad and I loved Mike's bass lines, however knowing this no matter what happens with Midheaven's sound, whether I hate it or not, I'll know to keep waiting and paying attention to you guys. Bands that go through this kind of stress and emotion normally end up calling it quits, so hats off to continueing and I hope to see you guys live some day.

I'm really glad that there are people out there that care as much about their work as you guys. Seriously, so much of the music today is take one, take two, take three bull shit. It isn't about being 100% incredible and new anymore, its more about being famous and rich. Bands like you guys have been the backbone behind the music biz for years and please continue to be the ones who drive the message home about honing your craft and being new and fresh in everything you do. I can't wait till Midheaven comes out to see all of your impressive sounds. Congrats bros.

totally hear ya on the protool recording bullshit - my band has dealt with bullshit record studios... i totally dig the idea of having the same sound on your album as you do live - i have yet to witness the human abstract in person - but i can only imagine it to be as badass as i hope... whether or not nocturne or the new album are in the same ballpark - i respect you all as musicians and think you are by far some of the most talented musicians i've ever encountered... nocturne was an amazing album - i know how you guys feel about writing the same song over and over... and i agree - i'm still going to purchase midheaven when it comes out - i'll have an open mind to it... but like i've told you guys before - you in no way have lost me as a fan - the fact you interact and respond to emails gives you guys a lot of integrity and i just respect you all - the human abstract will always be one of my top bands - regardless... your leads on the guitar are just inspirational...and give me something to look forward to everyday - nocturne has been in my disc changer since i got it... and i'm sure your other material will be just as badass...... so fuck ya!!! can't wait for the new album........ can't wait til you guys tear the place down in illinois!!!!

I will miss Mike, he seemed to be a really kool guy and when I met him, I felt comfortable right away. I completely concur however, that a band should never be held back by a member who is not pulling their wait for their own parts. I will miss him as I have missed A.J. but when things MUST move on, the best thing to do is adapt or you miss out. Welcome to the family Allen.

I also like the new sound, new sounds mean that all the touring and years in between albums was used to learn new things and better the abilities of the musicianship put into the work.

I love what this band has always stood for, especially the description on the page. You guys have some good heads on your shoulders, keep it up, I look forward to ALL the new changes.

Man, the big paragraph in the middle when ya went on about how you ditched your producer and hooked up with you friend, and you ditched all the editing/protool... that there just sold the album to me.

There's so many bands out there, -especially- right now, that have these ridiculously tedious passages with polyrhythms and everything... and you go see them live and they're all just standing there like statues because the shit is so hard to play and they really aren't that good. That really blows from a fan standpoint. I mean, there's so many bands that, even as a musician, I'll find too complex to really actually enjoy, because there's no substance, just tech tech tech. And no live show. I saw you live and you guys tore the stage in half despite being on tour with Mushroomhead and I was like one of the three people in the crowd that were actually into you guys because those industrigoths just don't know good music.

It's too bad you had to part with Mike though. He rocks live, and I enjoyed him on Nocturne (mostly cuz I actually heard him!). Was he really that bad? Something a session musician couldn't remedy this time while the dude hits up some lessons or something? Just sucks, seems you guys are losing members left and right and your lineup had really good chemistry.

Good luck in the future though!

I don't know guys, this might be the first time I really disagree with you. I'm all for listening to a band that are amazing musicians who can play all their songs perfectly, but I don't see a problem with pro tools editing. I mean, last I knew the point of music wasn't to show off who was a more technically proficient player, it was to write a song that sounded aesthetically pleasing. And if you have an artistic vision that you just can't play perfectly live, I don't understand what's wrong with using a computer to make it happen on the record.

I'm probably the only one that will end up saying this, but I'm glad Mike is out. Ever since he joined, I always got shallow vibes from him, and his bass playing was nowhere as good as it would need to be when playing with a band like THA. I recently saw THA live with the Eason guy, and he seemed pretty legit. But the thing about Toby... I did not see that coming haha.

Damn, dude...that's devastating to hear. Mikey was such a huge part of the live performance, it was sooo awesome to see him play and get all into it and do those crazy back bends and shit. and he was such an awesome and chill person off the stage too...he was quite the character people rarely ever get to meet.

I'm gonna have to pour some out on the curb for my homie, Michael Nordeen.

One correction to the above - multitrack recording (16 tracks at first, then 24 became the standard for many years) did in fact exist in the 70's, and musicians quite frequently overdubbed parts either for layering or correction. The band playing "live in the studio" was de rigueur in those days. Recording parts one at a time did not come into fashion until the eighties and nineties. Modern editing techniques did not exist in the sixties and seventies, so there was far less emphasis on mechanizing the sound by making every part perfect. In that respect, the musicianship heard on those earlier recordings was much closer to what was being heard in a live show. btw, I've been listening to Mid-Heaven and it KILLS.
You guys are the best!

lol ok the thing about atreyu, when they switched labels they pretty much signed a contract that forbid them to scream. and there music has no feeling. have you listened to like the opening solo on doomsday? what ever happened to the solos that actually touched you. and gave you chills. ok they can say o were happy where we are blah blah but there hearts are still with there old selves. cuz you can hear the difference between the feeling and emotion and thought in there old albums compared to there new piece of garbage. and a7x well he blew his vocal chords sooo you can really talke shit about them, cuz there doing the best they can do with what they have. there solos kinda suck now but its ok.
i still enjoy them

You guys are all good dudes, and I stick by that 100 percent. I booked you guys in Auburn, Ny when you were touring with The Autumn Offering and Hell Within and you stayed at my house and to this day I remember you guys as the nicest band i've ever met. Even though the night was eventfull with cops being called because of noise I wouldn't have changed it. You guys were all awesome, and treated me like a human being instead of a paycheck and that has always stuck with me. You guys are legit and I got your back. You have my respect.
