Grant Hart was kind enough to answer questions submitted by his MySpace friends.  He jokingly commented that writing his responses reminded him of homework.  Thanks, Grant, for taking the time.  I'm sure his Myspace friends will enjoy.  -beau, unofficial Grant Hart Myspace guy.

Hi Grant. You are a very poetic lyricist. Have any poets or writers influenced or inspired you?

Mielle, Oakland, California

Groucho Marx and William Burroughs. Ginsberg and the Cherry Valley Gang of Plymell, Pelieu and Beach. If you want names dropped, try Thurston.

What is his favourite Husker Du album?

Richard , Auckland , New Zealand

"Land Speed Record" thrills like no other. The most unique statement that everything else has to be put in context with.

Was there ever an offer from Bob or that you made to Bob about selling the rights to the songs from Husker Du. I've heard both ends of this story and maybe we can get some clarification.

Jesse, Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin

See attachment (A).

The obvious, was there ever any talks of a reunion during the past ; wow 20 years.

Jesse, Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin

There is talk. Hungry rats always smell cheese. Whoever thought Plastic Man would ever be honored with a postage stamp?

What about your new album, and when it will come? Rumors have said that you've been doing it with members of God Speed You Black Emperor?

Vitamin B, Lund, Sweden

It will be finished in a jiffy. You have correctly identified my cohort.

One of the big questions i'd like to ask Grant is if he's gonna tour around a bit more extensively- i was supposed to see Nova Mob in Dallas around 10 years ago but the show was canceled. We'd love a chance to see him in this part of the country (Oklahoma).

Theodore R, Lawton, Oklahoma

I like your idea. Ask a reliable promoter to contact the address on the website. That goes for all of you readers of these responses. Let's build a database. I put on good concerts and provide good value but I insist on ticket prices in the under ten dollars range.

Many years ago i bought the "Shoot" EP which I believe Nova Mob didn't intend to release as they were demos, but the record compnay went ahead and did it anyway. "Children in the Streets" was a great song and I wondered why this was never subsequently recorded.

Bruce, United Kingdom

That extended play 45 was on a label called Black Box who we got along with better before I gave their Fender Twin Reverb amplifier to the audience in not-working condition. After that destructive episode, which also resulted in a broken Telecaster, relations were somewhat strained. "Children In The Streets" addressed the murder of young Brazilians in Rio, reportedly by government death squads. Musically it was close to "Tighten Up" and once the version you mention came out re-addressing it was not on my list of things to do. It has been performed recently but I was never really blown away with the song. Thusly, I wrote others.

My first question would be: Will there be ever a Husker Du biography? And the second: When did the infamous "blue paint show" happen?

Willi, Witten, Germany

Two far-out sisters from England put a lot of time into a work that I don't think was published. Their names are Belinda and Chantal Latchford. The blue paint special took place at a Chicago club called The Oz. In the year 1981. After playing there on a friday and saturday the promoter asked us to play again there for an after party for a L.A. band called Black Flag.

Whats an everyday routine for Grant Hart?

Alan, Austin, Texas

During the summer I go on daylight wasting time. I am naturally a night person. I hate driving on crowded roads. Touring is the only time I really conform to anything close to "normal" hours of activity. Late afternoon I make and return calls on a standard push-button telephone that is connected to the wall with wires. I prioritize these calls according to my level of self-absorption. Then I open letter and packages, usually Studebaker parts, and attend to that as required. 6 PM or so I leave to take care of errands and the market. The food market, not the stock market. Upon returning I will give my cat-friend some kind of a treat. He likes defrosted frozen shrimp better than fresh. 4 or 5 pieces. Lately I have spent early evenings working with a new friend, Andy Bebee, welding and preparing the body of a Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk for paint. Andy is a music lover and a true artist in metal. He probably could weld glass to titanium, or find out how. I have always been interested in transportation technology, but in the last nine years I have taken the time to do things I didn't have time to do as a teenager. Stock is good. Rat-rods are cool, street rods are for repressed old fuckers in need of more conformity.

After that I go home or to a club, cook a meal and hit the books. Then to sleep, perchance to dream.

2541... what more can you tell us about that song? What "2541" address is this about? (I used to live in an old Victorian house converted to a duplex in uptown Minneapolis with an address of 2541 Harriet Ave... and it had big windows to let in the sun. I always wondered what "2541" address you were speaking of.)

Laurie, Petaluma, California

The song was written while I was waiting for a friend who was helping me move out of 2541 Garfield Avenue South in Minneapolis. When the band Husker Du broke up, our office address had been 2541 Nicolett Ave. You were living a block east of the home address. Nice place. Why did you move?

Of all the things you have experienced and accomplished so far in your life, what are three things you still want to do in your life which you've not yet done?

I would like to build a replica of an early monoplane along the lines of a Deperdussin or Rumber Taube (dove). I don't know, cross the equator in a ship. Appear on the game show "Jeapordy". Learn to spell simple words. Own the trademark to the band name "Fucker".

What current band(s) are you listening to? What new bands do you see as the most promising and inspired? As far as local unsigned bands in Minneapolis, who are your favorites to watch?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

Not at all a "new band", but constantly reinventing themselves "Rank Strangers" for a year now with a new drummer (sigh). Time for a reissue or box set from these fellows.

When you were starting your musical career, what other music / musicians inspired you? Who did you consider to be your contemporaries?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

This might be a dumb answer but I think the biggest inspiration and this probably goes for Bob as well the biggest inspiration was the very idea of being in a band the concept and that flow flowering of energy.

If you could meet any other band/musician, whom would you most like to meet and why? (assuming you've not met them yet).

Laurie, Petaluma, California

For some reason, while thinking over the question my mind flashed on Ludacris and I can't shake it. Wouldn't that be fun. Last year I had the honor of personally serenading the genius behind the film "Night Of The Hunter" Paul Gregory. I sang him "Teeny's Hair" and after he said "talent is such a wonderful thing. I met Gertrude Stein".

In Minneapolis, where is the best place to get a gyro at 2:00 A.M?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

At 2:00 AM I think "It's Greek To Me" on Lake and Lyndale might be closed already so plan ahead. I really can't think of another without checking the yellow pages.

What was the most memorable show you ever played (for good or for bad) and why?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

Madison Wisconsin on the "Flip Your Wig Tour". My son was born during the encore. (Not on stage or in a theatrical trunk).

Boxers or briefs?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

Swore off underwear the first time I dropped acid, although something lacy under black leather chaps can be a nice look. (Now don't all you kids who wear underwear think I said it's okay to take drugs, dammit!)

Who are you voting for in the 2008 election?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

Bush is proof that restorations do not work out too well, so there goes Hillary. Obama would be great, but I think when people are all alone in the voting booth their racism will come out. John Edwards' wife is ill, Gore won't run so... I guess I'm going the third time with Ralph Nader. Third time is lucky, right?

From an art perspective, what inspires you?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

I respect good draftsmanship. Technique and worthy materials are important, but the originality of the idea itself and the concept are what lights my bulb. A sarcastic edge like my beloved Marcel Duchamp. Like music, there should be a lot of sexy overtones.

All of us from Minneapolis have many things that we absolutely love about being from Minneapolis/MN. What are your top 5 favorite things about Minneapolis?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

My favorite things about Minneapolis are A) the large selection of clothing optional restaurants and bars, B) the free car washes, C) backwards day (inspired by Edith Massey), D) mile after mile of burnt out abandoned buildings and E) not having to live in such a neurotic city. I live in Saint Paul, the city of South Saint Paul, as a matter of fact.

When you aren't playing music or creating your next art masterpiece, what do you do with your time?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

I have enjoyed the maintenance and restoration of Studebaker automobiles for about ten years now.

What is the name of the last book you read?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

Yesterday I finished "The Air Show at Brescia, 1909" by Peter Demetz.

What is your favorite movie? What actor would you most like to meet?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

I can't say an absolute fave but Mernau's version of "Faust" would always come close to tops. A favorite actor to meet, hmm let me see. I almost said Malkovich until I realized I just mentioned Mernau. How about Lauren Bacall.

If you could have dinner with anyone (past or present), who would it be and why?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

I would have dinner with Howard Hughes or Jack Ruby. Rudolph Hess? Apollinare? I know, Duchamp. Buster Keaton.

Before you joined forces with Bob and Greg to form Husker Du, what did you think you might do for a career if not play music?

Laurie, Petaluma, California

Before Husker Du I thought about becoming a printer or a nurse.

The punk scene in the seventies was fundamentally an outcast scene. Many of those outcasts became outlawed artists whether it be a self induced exile or industry driven. Do you consider your self an outlawed artist in today's music/art industry? Has current society's views and trends made it more acceptable to be an artist against the grain? Could you name a few outlaw artists that you respect?

BP, Rochester, New York

Maybe we could look at "mainstream" artists as representing the term generic and the other artists as the organic, the exotic, the imported, the parev. In other words that which represents unique or refined.

Bob Mould has said he would never consider reuniting with Husker, Greg Norton seems like he would be up for it but has said its unlikely to ever happen. What's Grant's position? is there still a feud between Bob and Grant, have they talked at all? There has been talk and a lot of interest in The Replacements reuniting, its seems like there is a similar fan-base that would love to see a Husker reunion. Is it possible. also, SST Records is notorious for being difficult to work with. is that holding up the possibility of a box set?

Bob, Fullerton, California

If there is a Replacements reunion it will be the first time Westerberg did anything before Husker did it first. I don't think Mars needs it.

As far as SST is concerned, Greg Ginn deserves a lot more credit and perhaps such a thing as empathy? Tell me how a net 90 agreement is supposed to work when the distributors don't pony up? Why is the thief that invented Napster a genius and Greg Ginn isn't given credit for being among the other things the most far-sighted A&R man in rock history? I outgrew dissing Ginn when I finally did the math.

I originally found the song ("All Of My Senses") on "Snowboarders in exile" in 1990 or so. My question is, Does he know anyone associated with that video, did he get paid, cause he should have. Has he had much response to his music because of that video?

Kenny, Reno, Nevada

You are the first person I have heard of who say what you say. There are many different ways a song ends up in a particular place. Weren't there a lot of SST songs on that video?

Which of your own songs are you most happy with?

Lisa, Austin, Texas

Song of mine that give me happy satisfaction... the crop of new stuff gives me goosebumps. It even gives my geese Grantbumps.. Titles? Sure! Each song has at least one title. Some of them are, "You're The Reflection Of The Moon On The Water", "School Buses Are For Children", "Khalid", "Barbara", "My Regrets", "Narcissus", "Silver Scion Boy".

Which songs do you always enjoy singing live?

Lisa, Austin, Texas

There is no song that I always enjoy to sing live because there is no "always". Me and Heisenberg have difficulty with the absolute. "Often" and "seldom" work. But many time I have been told "My wife (husband, girlfriend, boyfriend) has green eyes, is it possible for you to sing "Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill"? Constant faves of mine to sing, "Teeny's Hair", "Terms Of Psychic Warfare".

What ambitions do you still have to fulfill?

Lisa, Austin, Texas

A soon to be realized ambition is the actual starting and running of an engine that I have put a lot of time and money into. There are books out there I am still looking for, there are Marcy Beache's translations of Claude Pelieu's work that I would like to see published although it is not my responsibility. I look forward to the day when my friend Laki Vazakis' film "Hunke & Louis" is seen by lots of people, I would like to enter into a three or more record agreement with a label. I would like to make my artwork, in particular my collages, known by those who care abut things like that. I want to continue advancing myself as a person, as a human life form, as an artist, activist, lover, critic, friend.

How has your taste in music changed as you've grown older?

Lisa, Austin, Texas

My taste in music has not changed as much as the way it comes to me. When somebody gives me a disc and say there were influenced by me I give the disc away, I forward it along to a friend and they tell me what they thought about it, if I should hear it. I like to get my "me" from me and not secondhand from somebody that thinks they sound like me. I like to see a live band that I haven't heard anything from. If I really like them I buy their record or make an effort to engage them in conversation.

What are some of your favorite classic films, or recent ones you've seen?

Lisa, Austin, Texas

I have been interested in the life, the work, the madness and enigma of Howard Hughes since I can remember. When the shit hit the fan about the "Glomar Explorer" project I was young and captivated by the idea of a recluse searching the most desolate and inaccessible nooks and crannies of the ocean bottom. His courage matched his cowardice.

Recently I watched his masterpiece "Hell's Angels" for the umpteenth time. When it opened in Hollywood, Hughes spared nothing to make the event memorable. My intrigue? Well, it's like this, originally the film was intended as a silent. A beautiful Swede named Nilsson played the role of the two timing (three timing, four timing, five...) girlfriend that Jean Harlow was given when Hughes scrapped the silent version. Even with voice coaching by James Whale ("I can tell you how to act but I can't tell you how to be a woman!"), she comes off terribly bad and her platinum blond hair looks like a Man Ray solarized print, without being solarized. I dream of what was lost when Howard compromised his great work in order to be on the technical cutting edge. It reminds me of Patti's record "Gung Ho" made using Pro-Tools software. If there is an artist besides me who is essentially an analog entity, it is Patti Smith.

Pick five words that describe yourself.

Lisa, Austin, Texas

"Bad-ass From South St. Paul".

I was wondering who is Ann and what was it that she wanted it so beautiful to be? From the track "A letter from Ann" off the Album "Great news for modern man".

Mr. Schmidt, South Saint Paul, Minnesota

You are going to have to listen to the song and figure it out by yourself. You probably downloaded the song for free anyway, so at least take the effort to use your fucking brain. (Although, since you have been identified as the obnoxious asshole who ruined the show for a lot of real "oldschool" fans who don't need to yell "Husker Du" 84 times to "show Grant the love", I doubt if you know how.

When can we possibly expect to see a remastered Huskers catalog? And what exactly is stalling the process?

Rob, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

In regards to the remastering of the catalog: Bob doesn't respond. I called him last week. My best advice to you is to make a digital copy off the vinyl and burn a disque from that. Hey Greg Ginn! You have the rights to the records. Re-master them!

Why do you consider "She Floated Away" to be "filler" (something you said in Tempe when I request it)?

Rob, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

When I called that song filler, it was in regards to it's repetitions, ease of performance, and heavy emotional effectiveness that takes nothing way from you for liking it. Let me ask, if "Warehouse: Songs And Stories" were condensed into a single long player, would "She Floated Away" make the cut? Probably over "Tell You Why Tomorrow" or "You Can Live At Home".

Are you ever coming to Pittsburgh (if so, my offer to help you set up/promote a show at Club Cafe or Garfield Artworks still stands)?

Rob, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Sure, lets set up a Pittsburgh show. Www.GrantHart.com has the contact number or try booking@angularfeatures.com which is the address of dear Miss Heidi Freier a film artist and booking professional who saves me the chagrin of home computers.

Have you been talking with any labels about releasing new material?

Rob, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The next recordings will be on a label from Canada or Chapel Hill.

Who would you say are your most important songwriting and singing influences?

Rob, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

There is no denying the importance of Bob Dylan to my style. There is probably more of his influence that comes to me second hand such as Patti's influence on me and Dylan's influence on Patti. She took it up a notch.

Is "Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill" about a girl who drinks cheap alcohol or is Heaven Hill a fantasy nirvana kind of place?

Rob, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

"The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill" is about going to or rather inhabiting a fantasy nirvana kind of place with a winsome young consumer of cheap alcohol.

Did you really say once that you wrote every great Husker Du song?

Rob, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

I most likely at one time or another said that I wrote every great Husker Du song. There ar a few of Bob's songs that I would be very proud to have written.

Any chance of a full fledged Husker documentary?

Eleanor, Woodhaven, New York

If there were someone who wanted to make a Husker Du documentary I would base my participation, that is, make my decision to be interviewed or not on talking to that person or getting to know them a little bit.

Which Husker show was his favorite/most memorable to play?

Eleanor, Woodhaven, New York

A Husker Du show I will always remember was Penny and Terry's wedding party at the Seventh Street Entry.

What do you think of Gang Font ft. Interloper?

Eleanor, Woodhaven, New York

I like Gang Font ft. Interloper. That is a side of Greg that never came through much in HD and Grey Area. It was great running into Dorothy Norton at the release party.

How aware is Grant of his web presence on Youtube and the like?

Eleanor, Woodhaven, New York

I am aware of my presence on Youtube and the like although I resist activities like blogging. It seems to me that some artists turn into virtual artists as a result of spending too much time spieling about their work than doing more work. I think the compromise of Beau talking to me and hosting the Myspace space is ideal. He will pass along things I can respond to without me needing to be listening in to your conversations.

When writing songs for Husker Du/Nova Mob/etc..., what was the process like, and how much/little of the structure and composition was left to chance while jamming or set in stone beforehand?

Eleanor, Woodhaven, New York

Most of my compositions with bands have resulted from jamming on/with a musical idea that occurred alone. Sometimes the vagaries of the arrangement are worked out by comparing ideas. It seems to me though, if one person writes the song and can take the time to consider variables and arrangements. Sometimes the problem is this, Grant shows his new idea to Dick and Harry. Harry has an idea for the song that Grant thinks is not needed, but Dick likes Harry's idea. What can Grant and his song do?

At what point does Grant consider he came into his own as a performing musician, when he was confident in his own/Du's originality, etc..?

Eleanor, Woodhaven, New York

I had much to offer even when I was 12 or 13. I could "follow" really well and had many opportunities as a substitute drummer for an agency that put together groups for occasions. I would hardly know the people that I was performing with. No rehearsals. I was given chances that no thirteen year old would ever get. Polkas, C&W, standards, Greek, Hawaiian. The agent, Kris Kalorgerson, would call me up and ask me if I had the right wardrobe for the night, not if I could play that particular style. It was lucky thing for me. Because of this I became a very musical drummer. I never saw Kalorgerson when he wasn't wearing a tuxedo.

Is the lasting nature of the acrimony between grant and Bob Mould not easy to overcome, because their relationship was largely confined only to playing and working in a band together, or were they more amiable to each other in private?(invited over for Thanksgiving and whatnot, etc..)

Eleanor, Woodhaven, New York

The first year of the band Bob roomed at my folks house and as I recall spent many holidays at our house and at Dotty Norton's.

Do you ever duck out into the garage and bash away at the drums for fun or do you pursue your other musical talents mainly?

Eleanor, Woodhaven, New York

I don't have room in the garage so I have to keep drums set up in the living room. I still love to play them and will continue to do so on my own recordings. I almost auditioned to play drums for "Rank Strangers".

Would Grant consider the music he had made in his past a form of American folk music due to its somewhat esoteric commercial nature, its regional origins, artistic sincerity, and the work ethic and performance of his material as apart of the spreading of his work?

Eleanor, Woodhaven, New York

To me the classification of folk tradition has more to do with how a song is transmitted from one listener to another and from one generation to another than other factors. All music has regional origins and I write every song to be a world-wide number 1 hit.

Can you tell us about the animation soundtrack work you've done recently?

James, Minneapolis, Minnesota

About a year ago or so my old friend Tom Hazelmyer asked me to record with him and others for soundtracks to animation of designs by the artist Dalek. I'll try to provide an address for you to experience it for yourself . It was great fun working with Haze for the first time since the first "Otto's Chemical Lounge" record. We are fond friends.

What is your favorite snack after smoking up?

Erik Peterson, St. Paul, MN

My favorite snack period is a glass of very fresh squeezed orange juice. Just like Howard Hughes I believe that the juice is it's most nutritious immediately after squeezing. My favorite after smoking up would be tobacco.

How many private party gigs do you play? I have a birthday in August-would you play a little concert for free booze and some money?

Heather, St. Louis Park, Minnesota

Too late to schedule a party for this year. Plan ahead. I do not drink alcohol. I do accept money or certain articles in trade.

What kind of artists or art are you really into right now?

Heather, St. Louis Park, Minnesota

I have recently read two books on the life and work of Joseph Cornell. I have been doing collage but I feel a shift towards painting is coming.

Do you like acting or enjoy the film making process? Why and why not?

Heather, St. Louis Park, Minnesota

In the Chris Larson films I really did not have to act. I merely had to operate as part of a machine. When I was involved in Richard Shepherd's "Oxygen" we rode back and forth on the same tracks so the continuity of the scenery out the window would be seamless. It would be hard to concentrate on such detail all the time. There is a project in the works which might just test my ability. "Richard The Fifth".

Please consider doing a show in Buffalo, NY some time, I'm sure The Soundlab would be happy to host the event, they get all the best shows now and the acoustics are good.

Alaina A., Niagara Falls, New York

The last show I played in Buffalo was at the Mohawk. If you would contact the email address (booking@angularfeatures.com) we can work something out. I hope the Lenox Hotel is still the same (including the night clerk!) A favorite place to stay.

What inspires your art?

Hope, Wichita, Kansas

Whatever inspires an idea is what inspires my art. In music or art or cooking or any way of expressing it is what strikes you at the time as the right idea. Good artists are the ones who get the good ideas and take them somewhere. Skills and nice materials (Carrera marble, Key of "C", blue plexiglass, etc...) help but you need to have the idea.

If Greg Norton isn't gay, why'd he have a gay mustache?

Hope, Wichita, Kansas

Greg's mustache seems gay, but in reality it is the straightest facial hair ever. A lot of it's friends are pretty diverse, but Greg's mustache is, as I said, straight. It has nothing to prove.

how did you like Kansas? Will you come back since i missed the show?

Hope, Wichita, Kansas

Kansas is good.

what do you think about The Posies song "Grant Hart"?

Hope, Wichita, Kansas

I heard the song "Grant Hart" a year or so before I met any of The Posies... From what I gather, they wrote an even more successful song called "Michael Stipe".

When will he do a show in LA again if ever?

James, Los Angeles, California

I will play L.A. After the next record is out.

What was it like playing with Bob again at the Karl Mueler event last year (or was it in '05?) Was it surreal, amusing, irritating, just like old times, an entirely different experience?

James, Los Angeles, California

I am glad to have had the chance to show Karl the love. It was one of the experiences you have but once. When I walked out onto the stage to join Mould we both heard more applause than we have gotten used to getting. Fucked up Bob entirely. It was two people playing the same two songs at the same time on the same stage. We weren't playing together.

Would he (Grant) ever play drums in a band again, or is he solely a guitar player these days? I ask cause he is one of my favorite drummers. Any chance of Nova Mob playing again?

James, Los Angeles, California

I play drums a lot. Nova Mob seems to be at rest for the time being. It is really up to Tommy.

Ask Grant his favorite memory from Husker Du playing gigs at Goofy's Upper Deck in Minneapolis. Man we had a great time watching gigs there!

Victor, La Crescent, Minnesota

One time we played at the Upper Deck and one of Bob's heroes from wrestling came to see the show. We gave him a t-shirt and he wore it on national tv the week after. He was Jesse "The Body" Ventura.

Please tell me when and how you started drumming barefoot? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Christian (from the "I Don't Wanna Know" video), Los Angeles, California

I started playing drums barefoot because the seams on my hightops gave me blisters.

Is it illegal to drive barefoot?

Christian (from the "I Don't Wanna Know" video), Los Angeles, California

You can get a ticket for driving with no shoes on your feet. Nice to hear from you. I'll be the camera woman still has a crush on you.

Why were there never studio versions released of the tracks on "Land Speed Record"??? Instead you opted for the live recordings. Do they exist and if they do will they ever be put out???

Small White, Minneapolis, Minnesota

A few of the "Land Speed Record" songs had been on real primitive demos, but other than that there were no studio recordings of those songs.

Where were the photos for the covers of Metal Circus, Zen Arcade and New Day Rising shot?

Small White, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Those photos were shot at the Milton Building in St. Paul, Northstar Steel in Minneapolis, and Bare Ass Beach on Cedar Lake in Minneapolis.

We know "Now That You Know Me" and "2541" were originally written before Husker Du broke up. Which other songs released after the demise of Husker Du, either solo or Nova Mob, were written while Husker Du were together?

Beau, San Francisco, California

Those songs had been more or less completed but I can't think of anything that was more than ideas pre-break.

How did you first hear about "Turn On The News" being included in the "Rock-N-Roll Hall Of Fame 500 Songs That Define Tthe Genre" and what was/is your reaction?

Beau, San Francisco, California

I think I was pleased.

Which Grant Hart-penned song cover did you like the best, or least?

Beau, San Francisco, California

The version of "Pink Turns To Blue" by Cows.

It seems that everyone is citing Husker Du as an influence these days; what are your thoughts?

Beau, San Francisco, California

When I hear about other peoples influences like that it makes me somewhat ashamed of myself for them.

Who is the strangest or least likely person to have told you they were influenced by you?

Beau, San Francisco, California

="">The strangest would probably be Moby.

I know Pachyderm were to reissue a remastered/remixed version of "Last Days Of Pompeii", but went under. Will this project ever be resurrected?

Beau, San Francisco, California

That remix of "Pompeii" is on the way... soon... I swear.

I've seen a video for "Admiral Of The Sea". Are there any other music videos for your post-Husker output?

Beau, San Francisco, California

"All Of My Senses", "In A Cold House", Don't Have To Tell Me Now", "Nobody Rides For Free", "Old Empire" have all been aligned with moving visual images.

How is your relationship with Spot and Greg Ginn?

Beau, San Francisco, California

I have no relationship with Spot and a business relationship with Greg Ginn who is the person that has been the most mistreated and dismissed person in rock today. He is responsible for so much great music it makes my head spin and I am ashamed for all the bad things I said about him until I put myself in his shoes.

I always thought a good way to introduce yourself to the younger generation would be to open for Green Day or Foo Fighters, both fans of yours who have released covers of Hart-penned songs. Has this idea ever been floated?

Beau, San Francisco, California

It sounds cold, but those people (Green Day, Foo Fighters) only call when they want some "cred".

There is so much mythos surrounding Husker Du, has the immortalization surprised you, or did you always know it would come?

Beau, San Francisco, California

The immortalization of the band is in a big way the result of breaking up when we were on the top of our craft and before our time.

You've said that Husker Du were preparing to make their worst album before you broke up. But both "Intolerance" and "Workbook"were incredible. Why do you think it would've been otherwise?

Beau, San Francisco, California

When we were preparing to record (and we were never a long way from doing so), there were things going on behind some of our backs and the lowest level of trust we ever had. Those two albums were so good because they were not compromised by the needs of the others to put their signature on anything.

Your drug problems during Husker Du were well-documented and well-publicized, while the same problem of other members went virtually unmentioned. Do you feel this hurt your post-Husker opportunities?

Beau, San Francisco, California

I was blackballed when the band broke up. There was a direct attempt to discredit me, but then, all that influence made me paranoid.

Your back catalog has aged extremely well. "Books About UFO's" was slighted by SPIN Magazine when "New Day Rising" came out, but now it's seen as one of Husker's finest achievements. But as time has progressed are there any songs you wrote that now make you wince?

Beau, San Francisco, California

A song that makes me wince is "Tell You Why Tomorrow" to name one.

You've made a conscious decision not be on the internet. Why?

Beau, San Francisco, California

My job is to make music and art. I have always had a hard time "selling" or exploiting my stuff. I feel that the internet is groovy but too much involvement would be like joining my own fan club. I would join a club with you nice people as members any day, though.

How many unreleased Husker songs remain in the can, and have there ever been discussions about a posthumous, rarities release? How much of the original recordings exist today? Are the masters in a temperature controlled bunker somewhere like they should be?

Beau, San Francisco, California

The only outtake of mine was a version of "Standing By The Sea" recorded for "Metal Circus". Bob's all came out as B-sides or on the Giorno Poetry Systems records.

Who shot the "Shoot Your Way To Freedom" 7" sleeves?

Beau, San Francisco, California

Tommy Merkl, Grant Hart (hey, that's me!) and Doug Myren shot those holes.

What is The Ghost Squadron of the Confederate Air Force?

Beau, San Francisco, California

The Ghost Squadron is a group that preserves, restores, maintains and flies military aircraft, mostly WWII era.

Did you think it "The Living End" was an accurate representation of Husker Du live?

Beau, San Francisco, California

"The Living End" is far from being a true document_ It is a pastiche.  The bootleg "Supernova" is the record you want.

Very interesting, thanks to all involved for doing this.

as for this part:

"Mr. Schmidt, South Saint Paul, Minnesota

You are going to have to listen to the song and figure it out by yourself. You probably downloaded the song for free anyway, so at least take the effort to use your fucking brain. (Although, since you have been identified as the obnoxious asshole who ruined the show for a lot of real "oldschool" fans who don't need to yell "Husker Du" 84 times to "show Grant the love", I doubt if you know how."

There were some meathead hecklers at Grant's Turf Club show recently, I'm sure this is what he's referring to. He left the stage at one point and the dudes cleared out and he came back and finished his set uninterrupted.

Awesome man. Thanx Beau and thank u Grant for taking the time to do all this. It's very rare these days to have an opportunity like this and actually get a response. Whether Grant wants to admit it or not, Husker Du will continue to inspire many many more generations that just refuse to go mainstream. Thanks again, great work.

Haha I like Grant's bluntness-it is refreshing--that question and answer about the mustache thing just made me lose it--haha

I was not heckling at all, in fact, my friend was requesting songs from Grant's current work and the Husker Du era. We were drinking and trying to have a good time at a show, and clearly got carried away. Somehow I don't think there would be too many differences to a show back in the Husker Du days. And as far as the source of the song, it was not downloaded illegally, the Cd's were given to us by Grant's mom. Comments were being made toward us also and things did get out of hand and that is unfortunate. My sincere apologies to Grant and those at the show. I wish it had gone differently. Before the show I thought Grant, my friend, and I had a good conversation and I thought things were going well...but by the end of our stay, our rowdiness was too much and the bartenders (and certainly Grant) wanted us out. Again, my apologies to Grant and the crowd from the Turf Club.
