Every year at San Diego Comic Con, a few books rise above the fray to become "buzz books" of sorts; projects that come from nowhere and capture the attention of the whole industry. Last year, one of those books was 24seven: an anthology taking place in the NYC Mech universe created by Ivan Brandon, Miles Gunter, and Andy MacDonald. A crew of talent larger than most baseball teams was challenged to explore a world where Manhattan was populated entirely by robots -- what the hell would life be like in a place like that?
This year, 24seven is back with a volume 2 and a whole new raft of stories by names like Ashley Wood, Gene Ha, Adam Hughes, Dave Johnson, Frazer Irving, Ivan Brandon, Michael Avon Oeming, Juan Doe, Jason Aaron, Niko Henrichon, C.B. Cebulski, Ben Templesmith, Rafael Albuquerque, John Ney Rieber, Will Pfeifer, Fabio Moon, Gabriel Ba and more.
Can 24seven volune 2 take the title of "SDCC 2007 Buzz Book"? Is this a streak in the making? With much thanks to Ivan Brandon, we've got an awesome exclusive premiere of a story contributed by the fantastic Fábio Moon. Check it out and tell us what you think, then pick up the book in stores on August 1st!
Thank you Ivan, the blog is yours...I didn't set out to make 24seven an international endeavor, but between the 2 editions, all but one of the world's continents got a hand in making robots with me. In South America, Brazil in particular, I guess a meteor hit and gave the locals the power to draw better than most. One of the most popular stories in last year's
24seven volume 1 was executed by two of these mutant progeny... twin brothers
Fábio Moon and
Gabriel Bá. It was called THE FIREMEN, and it told the story of a team of robot firefighters who go out of their way to make a fire worse. When the twins were done, I told them next year they should swap creative roles and do another story... but they're mutants, like I said, so with laser beams and charm, they did one better, each doing their own unique tale for our strange robot world. They were nominated for an Eisner award this year, and Entertainment Weekly ranked them both in their TOP 100 list. Here, now, is Fábio's new story, THE MAGIC AGE.
