Twin brothers, Shawn and Sam, aren't your typical kids - sure, their Grim and deep dedication to metal isn't that unusual but their mysterious parentage sure is! Empowered by the legendary sword of Atoll, these kids are determined to thrash and wail on however many demons they have to in order to fulfill the ancient prophecy and regain their rightful position as Hell Baron of the Pit. Loud, fast and heavy like the music it is inspired by, Black Metal ties into the youth culture that has grown up around this ferocious sound. Then infused with a shot of ancient myth and a healthy dose of high adventure, it rises to the level of a truly epic tale.
SO IT IS, SO IT WAS, AND SO IT SHALL EVER BE. The dark twins shall arise and bring with them a harrowing sound: BLACK METAL! This summer, writer and dedicated metal head Rick Spears unites with artist and dedicated metal head Chuck BB to bring you the first comic truly deserving of double devil horns: BLACK METAL!!!
This shadowy tome hits the stands on August 1st, but thanks to the good people at Oni Press, MySpace Comic Books has a so-huge-it-is-heavy exclusive preview of the comic right now! Not only that, but Chuck and Rick have put pen to paper to record their Top 5 Personal Metal Moments, to be forever insrcibed in the illustrious history of Metal.
This blog is so righteous it hurts! Scream if you are feeling it: BLAAAAAAAAACK METAAAAAAAAAAAAL!
Take it away, o dark lords...
Chuck BB's Top 5 Personal Metal Moments!5. This isn't something I'm all that proud of, but on the other hand I was a youth at the time. When I was 7 or 8, the only metal I knew was what MTV provided. This was of course hair metal, and between my friends you could either be a supporter of Poison or Def Leppard (in retrospect, I realize that def leppard is a slightly better band). I however, was of the Poison-legion variety. To this day I have a very strong recollection of using a mammoth piece of pink sidewalk chalk to draw the Poison logo on my front porch steps. Sidewalk chalk is Metal as fvck, I know.
4. In the summer of 2006 Emperor reunited to play Los Angeles and New York once more (which they did again this summer w/ Sammoth).I never thought I would have had the chance to see them live, since I missed the Imperial Live Ceremony many years back. The moment they began playing "Thus Spake the Night Spirit" a nerdy chill ran up my spine, excellent.
3. For a brief moment in the mid-late 90s I thought Hardcore was cool, and went to some horrible show with Earth Crisis and Madball.I was enjoying the vocalist from Earth Crisis bloviate about how computers are ruining the world, when a Giant stepped on my left big toe, and tore it asunder. The resulting damage has created a perpetually returning ingrown toenail that at times has become so infected I have seriously thought about taking a photo, slapping on a Mayhem logo and sliding it in a jewel case and selling it as an alternate bootleg cover for the infamous "Dawn of the Black Hearts" Album.
*2. Last month I finally found and purchased Ulver's "The Trilogie – Three Journeyes through the Norwegian Netherworlde" Vinyl Box Set.This three LP set is collects the picture disc versions of my personal favorite Metal albums from my personal favorite Post-Black Metal outfit. The box set is super rare and set me back $200 bones. I haven't even listened to them yet, I just gaze longingly at its mighty awesomeness. I think that if anything this proves that I'm dedicated to the music, and I'm a huge lame nerd who doesn't have $200 any more.
**1. That time I visited Norway, and a few of my friends talked me into burning down a church…Or not. Actually, probably that time that I drew some black metal kids, and Rick Spears was like "Hey that's pretty sharp lets make a story around them" and then Oni Press was like "hey that story is pretty sharp lets make a book about them" and then they printed up a book about kids who were really into Black Metal! That's probably my biggest bestest Metal Moment ever!

Rick's Top 5 Personal Metal Moments! 5: Man, I can't believe I'm putting Poison on my list too. Anyway, back in the day when I was just a pup in Virginia, Poison was the first concert I ever went too. I remember being so totally impressed when CC just wouldn't stop playing and a roadie had to carry him off the stage as he kept ripping. It was only later that I realized this was a set piece at every show. What can I say, I was slow like that. In the spirit of full disclosure I also saw Cinderella, Tesla and Motley Crue in this same time frame.
4: After I got past the glam and hair bands I knew metal for being heavy and fast and Slayer was king but then I found Earth.I first got into Earth because Kurt Cobain was on the first record (this was the early 90's come on) but Earth 2, the second album is just mind numbing in it's heavy, trudging, roar-- like some microscopically slow glacier of noise. This was totally new for me; slow metal and it blew my mind.
3: The Richmond years.I moved to Richmond VA to go to collage at VCU. Finding myself all on my own for the first time I predictably went berserk. Highlights include seeing Sleep live at Twisters, watching Curtis getting LSD tattooed on his forehead, smoking out with Clutch at Josh's, squatting with Buddy and Buzz Oven, Avail, Bikini Kill, Fugazi at the Washington Monument and of course the home town heroes, Gwar who even in the middle of their Bevis and Butthead fame still made time to come home to Richmond and shower the locals with blood.
2: The Boat House in Norfolk VA was for a time nearly the only place around to see decent bands. My relationship with the BH began with the first band I missed there, I was 15 and had no way of getting to Norfolk on my own and when I wanted to see the Pixies in what at the time was their last tour my parents wouldn't take me. They thought the BH was a seedy dive and no place for a kid but they didn't understand at all how bad I wanted to see this band, how important it was. This basically marked the point in my life where I came into my own and realized there were things that I was just going to have to do by myself. If the parents couldn't handle it then they just didn't have to know about it. So a few weeks later when Danzig came to town I didn't ask the parents for shit I just hooked up my own ride with some older kids from school who were into the Misfits and never looked back.
1: And finally, I ran away once.It seems stupid now and I can't even really remember the inciting incident, most likely my parents coming down on me my for grades or something and I just bucked as this was not unusual for that time. I didn't run far however, This was when I lived in Va Beach and I basically just bounced around from couch to couch at other kids places dodging random parents. It was the winter, off season at the beach so all the tourists and that noise was gone leaving a sort of cold grey emptiness. I remember one night; a gang of us played hide and seek in this one girl's house. The place was massive, endless and we played our game tipsy on wine, with all the lights out and Black Sabbath blasting from somewhere. It was like a weird sensory deportation experiment with Ozzy leading us groping teenagers in heat deeper into the darkness. That time there in the dark, with those kids and those songs, that's a moment that haunts me and I try frequently to write myself back.
