At 450 pages, POPGUN is as heavy as it is highly anticipated. Edited by official MySpace Comic Books
"Heroes of the Revolution" Joe Keatinge and Mark Andrew Smith, POPGUN is a mighty comic book anthology; it will pretty much remind you of a regular comic book pumped up on steroids, trained by ninjas, and kicking it at the Playboy mansion. And if you put it in the trunk of your car, your milage will decrease by 12%.
This book has so many facets, so many creators, so many stories, and so many bold new visions it will be impossible to hold it all in your brain at once. (And going back to the 450 pages thing, holding it your hands may require the buddy system.) For example, the exclusive story we are presenting for you below: SUPERTRON. Sheldon Vella's story is like Murakami + Moebius + Matsumoto (wikipedia; wikipedia; wikipedia) and a blast of fresh air. Consider there is still 434 pages of POPGUN left, and realize a) how awesome that is for us, and b) how insane that was for Joe and Mark to put together. Because we are sadists, we asked these two to pen a guest blog for you.
Don't miss POPGUN on November 28th; when it comes to the cutting edge of comics, it's required reading. Much gratitude to the editors, Sheldon, and the gang at Image comics for making this happen. Joe, Mark, take it away...
Like any good music mixtape, our visual and graphic mixtape, POPGUN includes:
1) Long lost b-sides from the annals of comic book history.
2) Established names doing work they're not known for.
and, our personal favorite:
3) Brilliant, yet unpublished new talents we feel are destined to take this medium to new and exciting places.
Sheldon Vella is a prime example for fact number three. He's a guy with a history of graphic design, but his comics presence has thus far been restricted to the web and minis he's given out at shows. However, he deserves so much more. He creates pure and entirely original graphic music blaring as loud as possible, giving the reader a sense of excitement only otherwise seen at a live show. Also, Sheldon's not a guy who dreamed of drawing Spider-Man or Batman. Everything I've seen of his is different from what came before - a constant evolution of talent and storytelling.
His comic, SUPERTRON, is no different. We're going to let the story speak for itself as we feel anything we say will just fall short, but we do want to say we're both thrilled to bring his talent to an even wider audience. When you're done, head on over to Sheldon's profile for tons more.
Finally, be sure to check the actual book out for a legion of other equally talented artists, writers and cartoonists whose work today will highly impact the comics of tomorrow.
POPGUN VOL. 1, a 450-page full-color anthology for $29.99, will be available November 28th. Be sure to check out myspace.com/imagecomics for more info.
