MyCup o' Joe
WEEK 9

16 May, 2008

MyCup o' Joe is the weekly communiqué from Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada to the legion of Mighty Marvelites Assembled! Every Friday, Joe will sit down with journalist Jim McLauchlin to answer questions on the pressing issues of the day at Marvel and throughout comics.

And you get to chip in as well! Joe will be answering YOUR questions every week! To get in on the fun, post your questions at the bottom of this page!

JM: You Marvel folks were hit by one of those double-edged swords last week when Invincible Iron Man 1 sold out. Now it's always nice when a book is well-received and sells out, but on the flip side…it sold out. Some folks can't get it. How is Marvel handling overprint copies and availability these days? You had a kinda pseudo-policy on only printing what was ordered a few years ago, yes?

What is the business reality of this? I'm sure Joe Retailer would love to have you doing thousands of extra copies on everything, but an unsold 3,000 copies on every issue quickly becomes a lodestone around your neck. How do you determine what gets a healthy overprint and what doesn't?

JQ: For us, it makes more sense to print closer to the orders with extras for damages and shortages, as well as the occasional overprint for what could be a top selling book.  With Invincible Iron Man having multiple covers, and large retailer incentives we felt that there would be enough copies to satisfy the marketplace. Remember just because Diamond is sold out, and your retailer is sold out, does not mean that every single retailer is sold out... our sold out announcements always say that there may be copies still available at the retailer level.  If we started overprinting carelessly and wasting thousands and thousands of copies each year, costs would skyrocket for every issue and we don't want that.  After many years of doing this, David Gabriel and his crew have become pretty good at gauging and predicting what they believe interest will be on each project and they have a pretty good batting average.

At least that's what David tells me ;-)

JM: How stupid is this? I mean, you guys are just printing exactly what your customers say they want, right?

JQ: It's not stupid at all, no matter how you slice it, it's always a guessing game and sometimes you can guess wrong.  What we try to do is to strike a responsible balance between what our customers want, what we think will be the inevitable demand and what we can afford on the risk side of speculating that eventual demand from a fiscal point of view.

JM: Not to become Mr. Complainy-Pants—too late!—but some stores have told me it would been one metric buttload better to have had Invincible Iron Man and Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas in stores a week earlier, before the flick and Free Comic Book Day. Why were these scheduled for the week after?

JQ: They were timed to come out after Free Comic Book Day so that with the free Iron Man/Hulk Sampler that would be given away that day, retailers could tell folks to come back the following Wednesday to pick up those key "New" Iron Man issues taking advantage of the fact that the buzz for Iron Man was going to be stronger right at that time.

JM: I just got back from the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, where The Hero Initiative showed off the first 50 of our 100 exclusive Hulk covers. So…where's yours, Bucko?

JQ: Uh - - - uh - - -

JM: Of the covers you've seen, you got a fave-rave so far?

JQ: There are a lot of great ones. A lot. Tough to live up to. I hate to single any one out, but one that grabbed my attention-I'm not saying it's the best, but it sure made me double-take-was the Sean Phillips one. Sean's always a great artist, but there's just something very…primal about this one.

JM: One thing I find refreshing as all get-out: A Marvel book that doesn't take place in Manhattan. So I'm interested in the "X-Men: Manifest Destiny" storyline that moves them to San Francisco. Now you do realize that San Francisco real estate is only slightly cheaper than Manhattan, right?

JQ: We sure do.  X-Men Group Editor Axel Alonso hails from San Francisco so he knows a thing or two about SF real estate.  But Warren Worthington has some deep pockets.

JM: So what else will be changing with the X-Men and their mission in this?

JQ: For the last 45 publishing years the X-Men have been following the same basic methodology.  Let's build a big house in Westchester and have a super hero strike team and a school for young mutants.  There have been a few minor changes (like when they were thought dead and in Australia) but it's always remained pretty much the same. Well, times have changed. Mutantkind has NEVER been in worse shape.  There are less than 200 mutants in existence.  Do you realize how bleak that is?  That's beyond an endangered species.  That's nigh-extinction, so the old rules and philosophies go out the window and Cyclops realizes this.  Every choice he makes has a huge impact on his species and whether it survives, so he's playing hardball.  The only way he sees for mutantkind to survive is to make them an army.  Build a core so tight that no one can take them down. The X-Men will move forward with the faith, but not the knowledge, that they have a future.

JM: Now you mentioned previously, and hit again last week, that your books are mapped out in a macro- sense through late 2009 and into 2010. Now naturally, there will be a lot of fine-tuning as time goes by, but in a general sense…is this a good feeling in that you have a road map? A scary feeling because you might be loading the eggs in the basket too early? Anything in between?

JQ: The "roadmap" is only a guideline.  There is a lot of room to navigate these roads. There are a lot of variables to be determined but you need a road map, if not you'll be lost before you start.  Having an idea of what it is that we want to accomplish is key to all of the stories we tell.  How we get there can always change and usually does, it's where we arrive that's ultimately important.

JM: You mentioned last week you were hip-deep in "working with our creators on a huge story we have coming out end of 2009 into 2010." Now I know the standard answer is always "wait and see," but…gimme one nugget. What's one cool thing, big or small, this will hinge on?

JQ: This will hinge on how at the end of Secret Invasion the whole world will be upside down and partly unrecognizable to our readers.  Perhaps not immediately, but certainly within a month or two following.  The aftermath will be pretty cool, but pretty shocking.  We'll be building off of that and that's all you're going to get out of me.

JM: Last question. You rather generously did an eBay auction for "Lunch and a Sketch with Joe Quesada" benefitting The Hero Initiative at New York Comic Con. It went for $1,500, for which I thank you. We just did similar with Dan DiDio at DC at Emerald City con, and it went for $1,300, with no sketch from Dan! Why so close?

JQ: My wife refused to bid higher than $1,500 for me.

JM: My theory—it's Dan's mustache. People like the mustache. If you had to, would you wear a mustache? What do you think it would look like?

JQ: Contrary to popular belief we very scientifically proved here at Marvel that people don't like mustaches. Last year, Editor Nick Lowe, spearheaded (along with Assistant Editors Aubrey Sitterson and Will Panzo) the Marvel Mustache Pageant.  During the preparation for the pageant, Nick grew what meager facial hair God and his parents could manage to bestow upon him, and was inevitably cut off by his girlfriend.  What all of our intrepid competitors found (with the exception of crazy-man Cory Levine who had a sexy porno mustache) was that they all looked silly.  My editors just don't have what it takes to look good in mustaches so I would argue that since Stan Lee, mustaches are just not a Marvel thing.

If you don't believe me, check this out.

Photoshop brilliance courtesy of Nick Lowe.

JM: I think I'm good. Reader questions?

JQ: Sure, but before we go to reader questions let me just let everyone know about a small change to MyCup o' Joe.  Since this is a new column, we're still a work in progress so a few things will change here and there, a nip and a tuck if you will.  We'll also be trying out new features from time to time, so it's going to be interesting to see what we eventually morph into.

Anyway, we've been hearing from some fans that they don't know where to post their questions and we've been directing you guys to two separate places, but I've also been seeing folks posting stuff right here under the column.  So, in an effort to make things easier and more concise, from this point forward post all your questions right here and don't worry about the other links, we'll do the rest.

As a thank you for your continued support of the column, I'm making next Friday, Fan Appreciation Day and will be answering nothing but the best fan Q's so have at it kids!

  Tony asks:

  1. Why is it that the death of a major character used to be such a universe shaking event and now it seems to be used as just a soap opera plot device? Captain America not-withstanding it seems like the characters that were killed off and we actually felt a loss for just end up recycled to the point that we don't even consider for a minute that anyone will stay dead.
  2. When are the X-Men going to be the X-Men again? (you know...protecting a world that fears them and hates them) Right now the brand seems to be either the Sins of Professor Xavier or Adventures in Space. This title used to have cultural relevance and was a good reflection of modern society and now it is just spandex and weird looking heroes or reformed villains or former heroes turned bad.

JQ- Tony, how are things?

  1. I'm not quite sure of the actual scope of your question as when I look at the history of comics, nearly every death has been used for soap opera effect.  The only deaths that for the most part stand the test of time, are the deaths that define a character's origin and reason for being.  The death of Uncle Ben, the death of the Wayne family, Battlin' Jack Murdock, etc.  But outside of those defining characters, death and resurrection have been a staple of comic book and fantasy storytelling since I can remember, so I don't know if today is any different than yesteryear.  Knowing that to be the case, what is really important, is not so much the death or the resurrection, but how it's done, the consequences paid and, at the end of the day, is the story satisfying. Because I hold that as one of my core beliefs, we have several rules in place at Marvel involving character deaths and resurrections that hopefully allow us to police them better and not have them just happen willy nilly.
  2. Hmmm, I would have to disagree with you on that one.  I believe the beauty of X-Men is the fact that it's stayed true to its metaphors while mixing in the high adventure as a welcomed reprise.  What makes the X-Men work so well is the blending of the two.  Not every X-Men story is going to be, nor should it be a heavy hammering on its core metaphor.  While it's important, only dealing with those issues would eventually become boring.  This last trip to space wasn't the first time the X-Men took such a journey and I'm sure it won't be the last.  But, moving forward, there is a new status quo in the world of X-Men as well as a new home and new teams with different missions and with that a renewed look at what it means to be feared and loathed.

Chase asks:

Does Adrian Alphona have any Marvel projects lined up? He's been taken off Spidey Loves MJ and I think he'd be perfect for just about anything. He's an amazing talent, and the thought that he'd go unused makes me sad.

JQ- Chase, I agree, Adrian is indeed brilliant, but at the moment he's pursuing artistic options outside of comics. While he's currently not scheduled on any projects, he knows the door's always wide open for him here at Marvel and we're looking to lure him back onto something for us someday soon.

Doug asks:

JOE!

  1. How did you get Duane (writer of Cable)? His books (not comic) are down right amazing! His Moon Knight and Punisher one shots are to die for! The Blonde was one of the best crime-fiction books I've ever read. Good find! What's on his plate?
  2. (Civil War question) It's safe to say, Due to villains never staying dead, that if you have a pumpkin for a head, a gun shot wound won't kill you. Am I right? Avengers secret weapon to defeat the Skrulls?
  3. Is JR. JR.'s return to Spider-Man just for a month like the other team writer/artist team ups?
  4. Cheese?
  5. The last time we saw "the twin terrors" the one was acting a little strange. Is one of them a Skrull? When they become one then their DNA would infuse right? Making them both Skrully? Will we be seeing them in Secret Invasion?
  6. I am loving all the major events in the Marvel universe but was wondering if things were ever going to go back to good solid "smaller" stories anytime soon at least for a bit. Maybe space out big events?

Keep up the good work!!!

JQ- Hey there, Doug, that's quite a list of questions.

  1. How did we find Duane Swierczynski?  Ed Brubaker recommended that he contact Executive Editor, Axel Alonso as well as Ed's Daredevil Editor, Warren Simons.  Duane did, and he sent us his books, and – well, the rest is history.  As to what he's doing next, Duane is working on an arc of Punisher MAX: "Six Hours To Kill," which is issues 66-70.  The artist is Michel Lacombe who drew Duane's Punisher Special: Force Of Nature one-shot.  And he's also going to be taking over Immortal Iron Fist with issue 17, which is on-sale in July. It's a four-part arc titled, "The Mortal Iron Fist."  I love Duane's stuff and see an incredible future for him here at Marvel.
  2. Dude, let me ask you, if you were a super villain, how serious do you think anyone would take you if you had a pumpkin for a head.  I don't need a gun to blow your brains out, I could use a spoon.
  3. JR JR is back on Spidey for the foreseeable future.  Due to Spidey's rigorous thrice monthly ship schedule, Johnny will be on art shifts and then off for a while, kind of like a fireman, but he'll be sticking around for a while.
  4. Alpine Lace Cheddar
  5. Sorry, no Skrully reveals from me.
  6. We actually do space out our events, but we do have some pretty cool stories on the horizon.  I'd say the future holds a mixture of both.

Kristopher asks:

Hey Joe, I love the covers for the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man "New Ways To Die" and Anti-Venom looks sweet. I especially like the cover with Spidey ripping his shirt open to reveal the symbiote. Does this mean Spidey will wear the symbiote suit again? And if not, will there ever be a story where Spidey somehow, for some strange reason ends up wearing the symbiote suit again?

JQ- Kristopher, I think it's safe to say, that if not now, someday down the road that the Spidey symbiote suit will merge with Peter again, I mean they were meant for each other.  Well, until the day the symbiote gets a taste of the Hulk, at that point, all bets are off.

Zemir from the Marvel.Com Forums asked: Hey Joe,

I am a big fan of both Runaways and Astonishing X-Men. So no need to say how sad I felt on the delays but can we have a little bit of explanation on why please. 4 months is really pushing it, plus if you don't mind giving a little preview on Runaways it would be really sweet. Thanks a lot.

JQ- Zemir, check out last week's column, someone asked the same question and the answer lies there.  But, you asked for some art, so here's some art!

Kazekun from the Marvel.Com Forums asked: Joe,

Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways ended with Noh-varr proclaiming the Cube as the Capital City of the new Kree empire. Are we ever going to touch base on that and see how it unfolds? And is there anything else about it you can tell us?

And what about Noh-varr's statement "Time to go" in Secret Invasion 1 when the Cube's prisoners were released. Can you give us any hints on how that'll play out in the declaration of the New Kree Empire? Or do we have to wait and read the rest of Secret Invasion to find this out?

JQ- Yes, there's a short Marvel Boy story in the Secret Invasion: Who Do You Trust? one-shot coming out at the beginning of June that concerns what Noh-Varr has been doing at The Cube all of this time. And here's a little bit of preview art just for you Kazekun.

As for Marvel Boy's statement, you'll kind of have to wait for upcoming issues of Secret Invasion to find this out, as well as Mighty Avengers 17.

Joey asks, Hey Joe!

What happened with The Order? Will we get to see this team in any other books or did they end when the book ended. I loved being able to see new characters and some characters that usually play supporting roles in the spotlight. Will we be seeing more of The Order or any new characters?

JQ- We'll continue to see the members of the Order now and again, Joey. They show up briefly in the upcoming Eternals series, for instance. And there are a bevy of new characters and new teams being introduced as part of the Fifty State Initiative in Avengers: The Initiative in the coming months, including the Desert Stars of Arizona, the Heavy Hitters of Nevada, Freedom Force in Montana, and the Point Men in Hawaii. So plenty of new characters are going to be rocketing your way.

Chris wants to know:

Joe!

Do other countries have their own super-hero teams? We know that there are people with powers from other countries because they always end up in our American hero teams. I mean there's gotta be villains in other countries right? Wouldn't other countries want their own "Avengers" team? Does S.H.I.E.L.D just deal with the United States?

JQ- Chris, of course other countries have super heroes.  We've seen some of the other heroes and teams that are active worldwide, including Alpha/Omega Flight in Canada, the Winter Guard in Russia, MI:13 in the UK (along with the more covert ClanDestine), and Big Hero 6 in Japan. Invincible Iron Man 2 introduces the Triumph Division, the super-team of Manila, in just a few short weeks. And S.H.I.E.L.D. is an international organization, so they operate on a global scale, though they're mostly funded and staffed at the executive level by Americans.

By the way, since I mentioned them, Big Hero 6, the top heroes of Japan, are about to come back with their own miniseries by Chris Claremont and David Nakayama. David's been hard at work redesigning the returning characters, as well as two new members to fill out the team's ranks.

Steve had this to ask,

Mr. Quesada,

I'm a huge wrestling fan and also a huge comic book fan. I saw the other day that the WWE has plans to put out some comic books about the Hardy's (best tag team evah!) but it looks pretty weak. I know a lot of my friends who are wrestling fans and comic fans would love it if you guys made books about WWE wrestlers. Who needs the Sentry to end World War Hulk when you have HHH. Thanks for puttin' out great stuff. Keep it up.

JQ- Steve, let me lay some logic on you.  Don't you know that wrestling is completely fake and Marvel heroes are real?  Come on now.

As for us doing WWE comics, well if someone else is producing them then I would have to assume that someone else has the license thus precluding us from being able to publish WWE books.

Sunfire has a burning question:

Hey Joe,

I was just wondering with the whole Secret Invasion going on and the X-Men mini going with it later, where is the Juggernaut in all of this? I really liked what had been done with him leading to World War Hulk, and thought it was cool seeing him there against the Hulk, alongside the X-Men. Will we see something like that with him in Secret Invasion? I hope so. Oh, and won't the Skrulls be after Xavier?

JQ- Hey Sunfire, where have you been?  The X-Office has been looking all over for you.  What, the X-Men beat you up a little in Messiah CompleX and you take it personally?  We expected better.  As for your question about Juggernaut, did you catch him in X-Men Legacy?  He's not going to be playing a role in Secret Invasion: X-Men, but we haven't forgotten ol' Juggy.  With Xavier, he's had his Skrull time.  Don't you think the others should get a chance?

Your-Mother-Loves-Me asks:

  1. Really enjoying both Mighty Avengers and New Avengers, will we ever see both teams become one again, maybe after the effect Secret Invasion has on the Marvel Universe?
  2. Apes? Why Apes?

JQ- Hey, YMLM, my mom says hi!

  1. You never know, heck, I wouldn't be surprised if after Secret Invasion there were no Avengers teams left.
  2. Because it makes me laugh.

Boomvavavoom from the Marvel.Com Forums asked:

  Hey Joe,

In Q4 of 2007 you told the watchful fans that you were waiting on Manara to finish his project to get started on that Claremont-written X-Men story. Any news since then?

JQ- Hey, Boomvavavoom, Milo Manara has just begun his X-Men project with Chris Claremont and turned in several pages of art last month.  Here's one of the pages just to let ya know what to expect.

Underworld Eve asks:

Can you clearly tell me why Steve Dillon is not the artist on Deadpool anymore ?

JQ- Well, Underworld Eve, here's the thing, we never announced that Steve would be the artist on the series.  I believe some in the press speculated that he might, but that didn't come from us.  That aside, Steve is going on to a new project that I think everyone is going to be thrilled with and talking about.  How about this, if the stars align, I may be able to preview a piece or two of art exclusively announcing Steve's next project.

This is going to be good.

Okay, I'm out!

See ya in the funny books,

JQ

With Marvel Boy getting so much face time lately, is there any chance ... any chance whatsoever ... that we can get the Grant Morrison mini from 2000 reprinted, perhaps with a Hood-like Premiere HC resurrection?

Also, are we ever going to get a trade collecting all the MYTHOS books? Those things are incredible (especially for new readers), and I'd love to see more.
Any new ones coming up in the pipeline?

Hey, Joe,

Thanks for answering my question the other week.

I really enjoyed 'Dead of Night Featuring Man-Thing'.
Any plans for more Man-Thing stories in the near future?

hey Joe,

I know I have been asking this every couple of months and at that time you can at least share some more images, so here I go again:

How about "Eye of the Camera"? How is Anacleto coming along?
One new question: who is going to color that insanely detailed artwork? Haberlin please?!!!

Hola Joe,

1. I understand that from Bendis's point of view, larger than life charactors are few and rare and mostly staying towards street level.
With his new howling commando's team, will Phobos have a bit more godly type ability and gear?? Or will he be relegated to looking dressed down and just staring people into submission?

2. Short of becoming frugal and narrowminded, what is stopping DC comics from doing another Marvel vs. DC series when it makes sense that with the new charactors each company has created, new abilities, new writers. It would be a top seller and benefit both companies.
Is their anyway you can answer it with some sort of common sense?

3. Will Bendis get to flex his writing muscles and come up with a scenario where the mighty avengers come to force Thor to register and the anxiously awaited battle of Ares vs.
Thor finally takes place?

4.
Are there any new charactors that you and an other creator are currently planning on unleashing that you feel will be as cool and popular and leave as much impact as the sentry?

5. Can you please draw the Red Hulk, could be for a variant cover or whatever. Just gotta see what he looks like when you draw him.

I've purchased Marvel products for the past 25 years, and it is just now I'm coming to say this regarding death/resurrection in comics. I'm tired of reading or hearing about the integrity of storytelling and the medium's past use of the device, especially when Spiderman: OMD added up to be the Clone Saga of this decade. Adding insult to injury, and acting much in the way politicians tend to, there was a promise of "dead means dead," that was thrown out the window in a matter of months. If you can bring back all these supposedly-dead characters, why the hell can't we bring back Wolverine's trademark cigar?! He can kill but he can't smoke...makes perfect sense.

I guess that's the joy of being E-I-C...you don't have to bend your will to the wants of the people. Much like George Bush and thousands of others left in charge with "big decisions", absolute power has again corrupted absolutely. If only ALL the "good" stories could end with a magic spell...
I'm so jaded by Marvel that it almost brings a tear to my eye when I look at the +14,000 comics I've purchased. Was I entertained? Sure...did it pay off with great storytelling? In some cases yes, but those are few and far between. And then when the fans say they're disappointed, the typical response is "Great! We love creating controversy!"...but it's not so great when people put their dollars and hearts into the characters, creators, and medium, only to be left with a bitter taste in their mouths. Humans have an AMAZING capacity to silently harbor abuse, in any of its myriad forms.

Any chance you'll go back to drawing and let someone else direct for a while, Joe?

Written without malice but integrity,
Shane

Slott has really done a number on crafting Slapstick into a beautifully well rounded character ripe with potential. At the end of the series there a number of curious hints towards a bubbling story.
Has Dan Slott planted the seeds for something that may spin out of The Initiative with everyones favorite funnyman, Steve Harmon? Is there something to the fact that he can't change his form anymore? What about the gadget he pocket after defeating KIA? Whats the haps!?

Hey Hey Joe. Spidey616 here! Out of WWH, some new characters made their debut in the Marvel U like the Gamma Corps and new Goliath, Tom Foster nephew of Bill Foster.
I was wondering if we'll be seeing them again in any upcoming stories, especially the Gamma Corps since it was hinted at the end of the mini that they're now after the Illuminati? Also, do writers Frank Tieri and Dwayne McDuffie have any Marvel projects coming up, and any chance of another Damage Control post-SI, since I'm sure the Skrulls aren't cleaning up their own mess? :)

Just one request Joe, a plea actually.

Deadpool is the one thing that keeps me coming back to the comic store. I then have reason to buy $100 worth of Marvel stuff a month, (and I'm disabled, so that's a lot of cash and a lot of Ramen), so please just hear this.

No "reinvention" please.
I know you can't get Joe Kelly or Fabian to do the book, and I respect that a new writer will have own spin, but please keep our favorite Merc recognizable.

Please.

Wondra {Jubilee} Best Damn One Period.

Joe, I just have some questions about the New Warriors series.

Since I roleplay one of the characters from the series here on myspace I ask you these questions to better help my roleplaying storylines.
(insert self promo of myspace profile here!)

First off, How did Jubilation Lee get out of the S.H.E.I.L.D.
facility after the fight with Omega Red in the Origins series? And does that have anything to do with how she ended up with the WONDRA powersuit?

Secondly, It was suspected that Tony Stark was actually bankrolling Night Trasher and the whole New Warriors project so that he had something to do.
Is that actually the case and if more New Warriors comics are in the works; Will this be something that is eventually revealed?

And lastly, The WONDRA powersuit has the abilities of super strength and is infused with Pym particles to allow Jubilation Lee the power to shrink those whom she is in contact with, but are these the only powers and abilities that the suit has? Or does this suit have other technological advances that have yet to be explored? Also did S.H.E.I.L.D.
create the powersuit or was it really a pet project of STARK Industries?

Thanks for all your help!

Joe,

What's the status on the "Daredevil: The End" story? I seem to recall an announcement for it a long time ago with a lot of big names attached. I was just wondering if I missed it or if it has yet to come out.

Are there any more "The End" type stories coming out soon?

Hey Joe

I was just wondering if we're going to be seeing the likes of Toxin around any time soon?
I mean, with the return of Eddie Brock and the whole Anti-Venom thing, is Venom's grandson really going to sit this one out?

That and how long is the Bendis/ Immonen run going to last on Ultimate Spider-Man?

Hey Joe,

I asked this last week, but it didn't get answered and I'm still curious, plus I have another to tack on:

1) I love Matt Fraction, as much or more than the next guy (I even tracked down Last of the Independents because I heard it was good), but what is with everyone giving him credit for creating Ezekiel Stane? To my knowledge, he has been a major character in both Ultimate Iron Man series, and I'm sure he existing in the Marvel U in some form before that. Doesn't the credit lie there, or if not, in the hands of Orson Scott Card? Mind you, I'm a huge fan of Fraction's take on the character and of the issue, buying multiple copies. I'm just confused on this point.

and my new question,
2) Why did the page count drop on SI 2, but the price stayed at $3.99? I can't imagine it's anymore difficult to produce than any other book with the same page count that goes for $2.99, so why not bring the price down after the first issue? Love the series, but don't get why it deserves a price extension without some extra pages or back matter or something.

One more thing, is there going to be anywhere that we can get a good look at the Hero Initiative Hulk project covers? A big shot of all of them doesn't really do them justice. Not that I could afford any of them, but the Spider-Man ones were fantastic and I be the Hulk ones are equally stunning... if only I could really look at them...

Hey Joe, last "OMD" question for you, i swear!
"BND" is a new reality, right?
So could someone like, or with powers similar to, Layla Miller "awaken" Peter to the reality he should maybe probably perhaps i guess be living?
Thanks!

Joe often when the topic of friendly rivalry in the comic industry comes up obviously its the whole Marvel vs DC debate, apart from them which company would you say is a serious competition?

on a similar theme how come you always compare your events against DC’s I mean Top Cow practically did a Messiah Complex type of event with First Born before you guys did MC (and with fewer issues to boot)

Read More Comics

Well, we here at Read More Comics are not sold out of Invincible Iron Man 1. I love the fact that Marvel does not over print. It gives us, the retailers who actually love and know about comic books the jump on the rest of the industry. It only made since to me to over order issue 1 seeing how it came out right after everyone saw the the blockbuster summer movie. Now, my customers are driving past comic shops closer to them to get to mine cuz they know I got it. MAKE MINE MARVEL.

Hi Joe,

1) This new brand of undetectable Skrulls are only revealed during death. Elektra was killed revealing that she was a Skrull. In Wolverine 30 Elektra was killed by Gorgon and brought back to life. According to background to Secret Invasion the Skrull Elektra infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and had run in with Wolverine.
Is this no prize territory or is there an explanation?

2) Was Mephisto a skrull when he ruined Spider-man for me? I hope so.
What happened to Spiderman's new/old powers of increased strength, stingers, and organic webs?

3) What Summer Marvel Movie do you like the best "The Incredible Hulk" or "Iron Man"?

Hey Joe! How are you doing buddy!

I hear you are not a big fan of cosmic stories but I'll ask the head honcho, anyway!

I read in one of your newsarma interviews that you were not a big fan of the orginal Quasar, Wendell Vaughn, and that you thought it best to "find someone new" and "start over.
"
source:http://www. newsarama. com/JoeFridays/JoeFridays46. html

My question is: Why bother finding someone new if you are going to change things? Why not just use the new character and let it have its own identity-- Especially when the said character could just have been tweaked a bit to fit with the current powers.
Why alienate a group of fans loyal to one of their favorite superheroes?

Another question: It seems there is a lack of writers/editors doing their homework on certain characters and story lines. Is Marvel, basically, throwing continuity out the window? Or does Marvel feel years of continuity just gets in the way of telling stories? I feel some comics from years past are meaningless ie Marvel, these days, seems to be putting out more stand alone type comics.

Maybe I am just getting old, eh?

Thanks for your time.

-Matt

Hiya Joe,

Percentage wise, what's the chance of seeing either of these in the next 12 months

1) More Warren Ellis / Stuart Immonen Nextwave
2) more issues of Ultimate Wolverine vs.
Hulk
3) Vol 3 of "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" (PAD's final FNSM issues are so far only available in the big ole "Back in Black" trade.
Is it going to get a sole volume?)
4) Marvel Zombies trade paperback (Its been in hardcover...well, forever.
)

Cheers, thanks alot.

Dear Joe,

First off, you've overseen things both that I like (X-Men, Secret Invasion) and dislike (Spiderman's current snooze-fest) but outside OMD and BND, I've liked your ideas on the whole. One thing I've enjoyed lately is the ASTONISHING X-MEN 1 web comic on the Marvel site. Any chance of this becoming a monthy (or at least regular) thing? If so, I'd nominate either Civil War 1 or New Avengers 1 to be the next comic. Plus what if you made a PSP Digital Comics brand with entire arcs availiable in the same way, complete with interviews, bonus comics and other bonus features? That would be a great way of seeing both modern and classic storylines come to life.

Anyway, thanks for listening and keep up the good work (cept for BND, just finish that and return things to normal already).

Dear Mr.
Quesada I have some questions I need answered think you could help

1.I've read this week about Wolverine vs. Hulk and Thor Vs. Hulk double direct to dvd animated feature after the release of the Teen Avengers direct to dvd animated movie is this true? Also are there any other ideas for animated features based on storylines i know ultimates have but maybe classic Marvel storylines like Secret Wars or the Venom Saga.

2. Do you think Steve Ditko will ever come out of hiding and if he does do you think you could get him to illustrate an issue of Brand New Day? Its a longshot I know but I think if all Marvel fans wish hard enough we could have him illustrate a small section of Amazing Spider-man 600 thats just a personal dream of mine hes one of my favorite artists and it would be cool if he'd return for a Spidey.

3.
Marvel Meets DC Crossover Geoff Johns recently mentioned in Wizard it would be the next step for crossovers do you think it will ever happen? like a major crossover eight issues tying in with books from both universes they said JLA/Avengers could not be done but it did and if it could happen who would you have write it and who would make the best team ups in your opinion?

4. And finally could you give out some War of The Symbiotes information? I'm really looking forward to this story I think its going to be awesome.

Joe,

First, thank you for allowing so many great stories to happen! Annihilation, Bru's Cap story, Secret Invasion, the X-Men storyline...

So much great and diverse stuff! Keep it coming and I'll keep buying.

My questions:

1) Can you find out if there are any plans to bring the Claremont/Paul Smith/JRJR Uncanny X-Men storyarc "From The Ashes" back into print?

2) Why are you (Marvel) going so nuts on the variant covers? Will it ever calm down?

3) I want to thank you for having such a comprehensive collected edition program.
Is that something you are really going to continue as vigorously in light of Marvel's steps into Digital Comics Unlimited?

4) Finally, will we ever get just a fun story of the big Marvel Icon heroes (Cap, Thor, Hulk and etc) teaming up to beat up some of Marvel's biggest Villians (Dr. Doom, Magneto, Loki and etc.) just for fun? I loved that about the original Secret Wars and miss it now. WWH and Civil War were great, just hero vs hero though.

No conflicted personal story or talking heads - just some good, old-fashioned Mighty Marvel Mayhem!

Thanks,
Paul

Regarding Death:
Didnt in the Marvel: The End miniseries when Thanos became omnipotent (that's his super power, right?) they state that people wont be coming back ever again? That when stuff like that happens, the universe goes into flux... or something else equally as bad sounding?

And last, who Okayed the plot in Xmen 3? Brett Ratner needs his ass wupped! YOU DO NOT KILL OFF THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN A MOVIE ABOUT HEROES!! And can we get spiderman to keep his damn mask on? I mean if he doesn't wear the mask then why have a spidey costume? Get real man! Ya'll makin' it hard to read comics. And the movies don't help either.

Hey Joe,

I just got a few questions/comments.

1. Does Alex Ross hate Marvel? In his work for DC (Kingdom Come, covers for J.L.A., J.S.A., and a couple other things) he does wonderful work that makes Leonardo Da Vinci look like some punk kid off the street, while the Avengers/Invaders (though it has just started) isn't too great. It's very dark and boring. I mean characters like Spiderman, Captain America, the original Human Torch, and Namor should be ready to jump off the page they can look so cool! If you need an example look at Gabriele Dell'ottos' work in Secret War. It's not just Avengers/Invaders that is so bad, the new Spiderman poster that is being released by Alex Ross is dull. It just has Spidey on a wall. Big deal.

2.
Any chance we'll get to see an old enemy of Spidey's in Brand New Day before too long? (But I do love Menace!!)

3.
Which team of Avengers is your favorite? Mighty or New?

Until Wolverine is a purple 7 toed rhino with rabbit ears, make mine Marvel.

1. I just wondered in the Ares: God of war mini series at the end his son figured out that his father was the god of war and that he had the blood of a god but then when we get to see him in mighty avengers he has no idea and it's changed from him becoming the next god of war to him being phobos is the mini just an out of continuity story to reintroduce the character and he just worked well enough to bring him into main marvel 616 continuity in Mighty avengers... cause he still has the same mohawky gun-toting axe-weilding look

2. I hear talk of Robert downey jr. agreeing to appear as iron man in other movies as cameo and edward norton agreeing to the same. Just wondering if this was fact. Since the Avengers movie has been announced would they then be playing their roles becuase it seems in my mind a dissolusionment of story to have someone else appear in a role that they didn't origionaly play except for those cases where the actor dies... which is tragic... but then is replaced.

3.
Apes? Really? Really?

4. and most important if deadpool is well recieved can we hope for a deadpool standalone movie.
Cause i'd pretty much be the most happy person possible

thanks

Joe

I have a few questions regarding the Ultimate Universe.

1. What is going on with UXM? Is it really going away after issue 100? I love that Universe and do not want to see one of the 3 regular books go away.

2.
What is with the delays on Ultimates 3? I know Loeb has the stories done so what is the deal?

3.
Will Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk EVER be completed?

4. Never allow Bendis to leave USM. In Bendis I trust. I have serious man love for him I'll admit it. With that being said are there any plans to bring a wider range of villians to USM. Sure we have been given almost all of the classic villans but in most of the stories the main villan ends up being Kingpin, Goblin(befoe he died), or Doc Ock and the other classic villans are tied into them.
I am looking forward to "War of the Symbiotes"!

5.
Why soo much UXM in USM recently? Is it to help boost sales?

6.
Doesn't moving Ultimate Fury to the Supremeverse defeat the whole purpose of keeping MArvel U seperate from Ultimate U?

7.
Can we get a monthly Ultimate Daredevil, Thor or Captain America? I know BMB LOVES DD soo can you convince him to do it?

Last one I swear...
8. It seems as though the Marvel U books mined A LOT of talent from the Ultimate U. Whereas the Ultimate U once had Warren Ellis, Mark Millar, Bendis and BKV, The Kuberts and Bryan Hitch; we now have Bendis, Loeb, Coliete, and Carey with the biggest artist being Immonen and occasionally Raney.
I know Ellis still does some mini's and Jenkins is taking over UFF and Finch is doing Ultimatum but is there any chance of getting someone like Larocca, McNiven, Lark, Maleev, or Bradstreet to draw for the uni or Ennis, Brubaker, Fraction, Reed, JMS, Whedon, or Jason Aarons to write for it?

I am done. Thanks.

Hey JQ

What ever happened to the super cops, firemen, and medics from Call of Duty? That was all in the MU right? They registered?

Any chance of spin off miniseries from Avengers: Initiative to give teams like Freedom Force and Texas Rangers and Liberteens a chance to shine?

We've got 12 (excellent) and Avengers/Invaders (fan-friggen-tastic), are there any other Golden Age related events on the horizon?

Any chance of getting trades of the 90's Marvel UK stuff, it features work by Abnet, Lanning, Pachecho, Larocca, Hitch, and other names that mean more now than then. Could be cool.

Or how about the Black Knight story from the old british Hulk Magazine. Hard a heck to find in the US, and with Dane getting face time in MI:13 he might be due...

Slapstick needs an ongoing, when can we expect to see that happen? ;-þ

Rumor is that Bendis will leave one of the Avengers books post Secret Invasion...is this true?

In Wizard 200 part A Bendis and Johns talked (maybe joked) about getting together with Jim Lee and doing a 12 issue mega-cross company crossover called Secret Invasion...please tell me there is at least a sliver of a chance of this happening.

So, until Galactus goes Vegan, MAKE MINE MAVEL
