MyCup o' Joe
WEEK 10

22 May, 2008

MyCup o' Joe is the weekly communiqué from Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada to the legion of Mighty Marvelites Assembled! Every Friday, Joe will sit down with journalist Jim McLauchlin to answer questions on the pressing issues of the day at Marvel and throughout comics.

And you get to chip in as well! Joe will be answering YOUR questions every week! To get in on the fun, post your questions at the bottom of this page now!

---

Hey there gang, Joe here. As promised, this week is "Fan Appreciation Week."  We've sent McLauchlin to the bar so it's just you and me.  Thanks a million for all the incredible questions, you cats have a lot on your minds, don'tcha?  Due to the overwhelming number of questions, I had to cut the list down as it would have taken me all week to get through them.  If I didn't get to your question, please don't take it personally, I just had to cut some for the sake of brevity.  Also, some of the questions asked about things that were answered in the previous nine installments.  So, if you don't see your question, check out the archived columns for the answer or just try again in the upcoming weeks. We hope to get to everyone at one point or another.

However, before moving forward I wanted to express to you all what an incredibly sad week this has been for us here at Marvel.  All of us were shocked at hearing of the passing of legendary comics retailer Rory Root.  For those of you who know Rory or had dealt with him in the past, you know that he was not only one of the best, but also one of the good guys.

We'll miss you Rory.

jayvee asks, "With Marvel Boy getting so much face time lately, is there any chance...any chance whatsoever...that we can get the Grant Morrison mini from 2000 reprinted, perhaps with a Hood-like Premiere HC resurrection? Also, are we ever going to get a trade collecting all the MYTHOS books? Those things are incredible (especially for new readers), and I'd love to see more. Any new ones coming up in the pipeline?"

JQ: Jayvee, check out our September catalog, I think you'll be pretty stoked.

Steven Ghost pontificates, "Hey Joe, thanks for answering my question the other week.  I really enjoyed 'Dead of Night Featuring Man-Thing.' Any plans for more Man-Thing stories in the near future?"

JQ: Hey Steven, thanks for writing in! You'll be pumped up to hear that we've got a new Dead of Night series launching in September by the Bram Stoker Award-winning horror novelist Brian Keene! Brian's writing a four-issue series reinterpreting the badass character Devil-Slayer. We're going to be looking at this character in a new, MAX light, and tie directly into some key events going on in the world today, in the classic Marvel tradition.

F.A.C.T.S.2008 asks, "How about 'Eye of the Camera?' How is Anacleto coming along? One new question: Who is going to color that insanely detailed artwork? Haberlin please?!!!"

JQ: Jay Anacleto is hard at work on issue 5 at the moment, F.A.C.TS., and the series ought to be scheduled before the end of this year. That's right, you heard me, this year as in THIS YEAR! Thanks for your patience. And yes, the coloring is being done by Brian Haberlin and his crew at Avalon Studios. Here's a sneak peak at some (uncorrected) color art from issue 4, featuring Secret Wars!

NLW asks, 1) "Any chance of giving Blade another shot? Putting on someone like Jason Aaron to write it would be pretty amazing.   2) Mockingbird really did have the worst death ever...let her stay around this time."

1) You want some Blade do you, NLW?  What if I told you that in September, Blade will be joining the cast of Captain Britain and MI 13 starting with issue 5.  Oh, and what if I showed you some art? 2) Nahhhhhhh.

jamie inquires, "Love what's going on with the merry mutants. Will we be seeing the children of the vault any time soon?"

JQ: Not particularly soon, Jamie, but we haven't forgotten them yet. They're doing all kinds of crazy stuff down in South America.

Вы действительно пахнете!! queries, "Slott has really done a number on crafting Slapstick into a beautifully well rounded character ripe with potential. At the end of the series there a number of curious hints towards a bubbling story. Has Dan Slott planted the seeds for something that may spin out of The Initiative with everyone's favorite funnyman, Steve Harmon? Is there something to the fact that he can't change his form anymore? What about the gadget he pocketed after defeating KIA? What's the haps!?"

JQ: No plans for a Slapstick spin-off at the moment, but all of your questions will be followed up on in one way or another in upcoming issues of Avengers: The Initiative.

3r41n14c puts forth, "I've purchased Marvel products for the past 25 years, and it is just now I'm coming to say this regarding death/resurrection in comics. I'm tired of reading or hearing about the integrity of storytelling and the medium's past use of the device, especially when Spider-Man: OMD added up to be the Clone Saga of this decade. Adding insult to injury, and acting much in the way politicians tend to, there was a promise of "dead means dead," that was thrown out the window in a matter of months. If you can bring back all these supposedly-dead characters, why the hell can't we bring back Wolverine's trademark cigar?! He can kill but he can't smoke...makes perfect sense.
I guess that's the joy of being E-I-C...you don't have to bend your will to the wants of the people. Much like George Bush and thousands of others left in charge with "big decisions," absolute power has again corrupted absolutely. If only ALL the "good" stories could end with a magic spell...
I'm so jaded by Marvel that it almost brings a tear to my eye when I look at the +14,000 comics I've purchased. Was I entertained? Sure...did it pay off with great storytelling? In some cases yes, but those are few and far between. And then when the fans say they're disappointed, the typical response is "Great! We love creating controversy!"...but it's not so great when people put their dollars and hearts into the characters, creators, and medium, only to be left with a bitter taste in their mouths. Humans have an AMAZING capacity to silently harbor abuse, in any of its myriad forms.
Any chance you'll go back to drawing and let someone else direct for a while, Joe?

Written without malice but integrity,
Shane"

JQ: Okay, Shane, I'll try to get to as much of the stuff that you've asked as is humanly possible.  I may bounce around a bit, but hopefully I'll get to all of it.  I appreciate your honesty, so I hope you can appreciate mine.

With respect to my ban on character smoking, etc., I have gone on about this in more places than I care to remember. If you Google it you'll be able to read all of my reasoning for banning smoking. If you don't agree with any of the stuff you read, here's the simplest math of all. I lost some of my dearest family members to smoking. Whether people like my logic or not, the simple fact is that I don't want the HEROES in my comics smoking nor promoting a product that has caused me and so many people that I know so much pain. A product that the tobacco industry put out on the stands and promoted to adults and especially young people, knowing it was deadly and even added ingredients that made it's addictiveness that much more powerful. To me, that describes villainy in the clearest and purest fashion possible. So, guess what, it may sound harsh, but as EIC I can ban stuff like that, whether there's a logic to it or not.

As for my promise of "dead is dead."  First, what you're throwing out here is the sound byte that the Internet and newsgroups ran with, but not the entirety of what I said.  Again, you can Google my views on this and if I'm not mistaken, I've talked about it a little here in the column as well.  I never said we would NEVER EVER be killing off or resurrecting characters again.

As for the other stuff, it's sometimes weird to me when people speak to me or about me on these forums as if I'm an elected official running for office.  My job isn't to get people's vote of approval of me as a person or executive. My job is to bring you guys the best comics I can possibly bring you. In that respect I bend to the will of the fans every day with every thing we do because the fans vote very clearly. They either vote with their dollars or their feet as they walk out of the stores. That and that alone is my sole responsibility here at Marvel and I take it very seriously. That's why I do my panels at conventions and why I do this column and have been doing a similar column like this for years. I take hours and hours in my day to answer these questions because I want to hear from people like yourself and engage in conversation about the stuff we do and to offer everyone a platform by which to speak and be heard.

I'm sorry you may feel jaded with Marvel. Hopefully we can change your mind somewhere else down the road. But, what I can tell you is that all of us here come to work every day to do our best and give you our best. Are 100% of the 90+ books we put out a month going to be brilliant?  Absolutely not, it's impossible plus one person's "brilliant" may not be another's cup of tea.  But, that doesn't mean that we're not working our tails off and that we're not listening to what our fans want on a daily basis.

Tim the Elder wants to know, "Just one request Joe, a plea actually. Deadpool is the one thing that keeps me coming back to the comic store. I then have reason to buy $100 worth of Marvel stuff a month, (and I'm disabled, so that's a lot of cash and a lot of Ramen), so please just hear this.  No "reinvention" please. I know you can't get Joe Kelly or Fabian to do the book and I respect that a new writer will have their own spin, but please keep our favorite Merc recognizable.  Please."

JQ:  You got it, Tim the Elder.  We won't be reinventing our boy Wade, but we will be re-introducing him to the rest of the Marvel U, dropping him like a Ritalin-deprived nuclear bomb right into the middle of "Secret Invasion." And if you think you know what Deadpool's gonna do...well, you don't. So fret not, all is right with the universe.

Garret eagerly asks, "Being from Michigan, and an alumnus of the University of Michigan, I have to ask: What is the name of Michigan's Initiative team?"

JQ:  The Buckeyes.

Wha?

Bub questions, "Hey Joe, any plans to return Beast back to his original furry form? His current look is what keeps me from reading X-men...literally!! In a battle, he looks as though he could be easily distracted by a container of catnip. Undo the mistake, you have the power!!!"

JQ: Sorry, there Bub.  X-Editor Nick Lowe is deeply in love with Cat-Beast (so much that it worries me) and I fear that if we change him back to Ape-Beast (which doesn't really make sense because he didn't look like an ape, did he?) Nick might take the road of violence.

That said, let me just state that I'm not a big fan of the kitty Beast nor the furry blue ape Beast, I'm old school and loved the big feet and hands Beast.

Let me add, if you're a fan of the ape Beast, check out the Secret Invasion: Who Do you Trust one-shot.

sabir raises the question, "Joe, what's the status on the 'Daredevil: The End' story? I seem to recall an announcement for it a long time ago with a lot of big names attached. I was just wondering if I missed it or if it has yet to come out.  Are there any more 'The End' type stories coming out soon?"

JQ: Hey, Sabir! The creative team is working away on Daredevil: End of Days as we speak. Brian Bendis and David Mack have been co-writing the series, while Klaus Janson and Bill Sienkiewicz have been doing a fantastic job with the line art. Here are a few of the amazing Klaus and Bill pages, seen for the first time anywhere! See, sometimes if you ask the right question, you can get an exclusive!

I was just wondering if we're going to be seeing the likes of Toxin around any time soon?
I mean, with the return of Eddie Brock and the whole Anti-Venom thing, is Venom's grandson really going to sit this one out?

That and how long is the Bendis/ Immonen run going to last on Ultimate Spider-Man?

Peace & Love
Samurai Jack
xxxx

JQ:  Sorry, no love for Nerdcore, there are no current plans for Toxin.

As for Bendis and Immonen, well as of this very moment, we're going to have to pry the book from their greedy little fingers.

J. Dinkhouse wants to know, "Hey Joe, I asked this last week, but it didn't get answered and I'm still curious, plus I have another to tack on:

1) I love Matt Fraction, as much or more than the next guy (I even tracked down Last of the Independents because I heard it was good), but what is with everyone giving him credit for creating Ezekiel Stane? To my knowledge, he has been a major character in both Ultimate Iron Man series, and I'm sure he existed in the Marvel U in some form before that. Doesn't the credit lie there, or if not, in the hands of Orson Scott Card? Mind you, I'm a huge fan of Fraction's take on the character and of the issue, buying multiple copies. I'm just confused on this point.
2) Why did the page count drop on SI 2, but the price stayed at $3.99? I can't imagine it's anymore difficult to produce than any other book with the same page count that goes for $2.99, so why not bring the price down after the first issue? Love the series, but don't get why it deserves a price extension without some extra pages or back matter or something.

One more thing, is there going to be anywhere that we can get a good look at the Hero Initiative Hulk project covers? A big shot of all of them doesn't really do them justice. Not that I could afford any of them, but the Spider-Man ones were fantastic and I bet the Hulk ones are equally stunning... if only I could really look at them..."

JQ: Dinkhouse, here ya go.

1-Both Ezekiel Stane and Zebediah Stane are related to the classic Iron Man villain Obadiah Stane -- a.k.a. The Iron Monger! -- but they're not the same character. Zebediah Stane, who has appeared previously in both the Marvel Universe and in Ultimate Iron Man, is Obadiah Stane's father.

Ezekiel Stane is Obadiah's son. He was created by Matt in The Order, and can be seen in current issues of Invincible Iron Man. Speaking of Invincible Iron Man, here are a couple of pages from issue 2.

2- The hard truth of the matter was that the series was originally priced to be $3.99 but at normal page count. What happened was that issue 1 ran over in page count but we decided to keep the price the same.

3- Just for you, here are a few larger images of some of the amazing covers that have come in to date.

Captain America wants to know, "Is it likely that we will ever see Luther Manning return as Deathlok?"

JQ: Hey look, its Cap back from the dead!  It's likely that we'll see Deathlok again in the near future. But whether it'll be Luther Manning, Michael Collins, Jack Truman or some entirely new zombie cyborg remains to be seen.

Steeley[M.B.D.I] Its muh Birthday today asks, "Joe often when the topic of friendly rivalry in the comic industry comes up obviously its the whole Marvel vs DC debate, apart from them which company would you say is a serious competition? On a similar theme how come you always compare your events against DC's? I mean Top Cow practically did a Messiah Complex type of event with First Born before you guys did MC (and with fewer issues to boot)."

JQ:  Let me start with the latter question. I didn't read Top Cow's First Born but I'm sure it was great. That said, it's not like either of us came up with the original idea for a "Messiah" story if you catch my drift.

As for competition, DC is the only one currently to really compare ourselves as it's not just about market share. We both have the longest history and most iconic characters so there are enough similarities that it makes for an easier "oranges to oranges" comparison. We're also, with respect to staff and infrastructure, the biggest and most comparable of all the publishers.

Scott of The RMC announces, "Well, we here at Read More Comics are not sold out of Invincible Iron Man 1. I love the fact that Marvel does not over print. It gives us, the retailers who actually love and know about comic books the jump on the rest of the industry. It only made sense to me to over order issue 1 seeing how it came out right after everyone saw the blockbuster summer movie. Now, my customers are driving past comic shops closer to them to get to mine cuz they know I got it. MAKE MINE MARVEL."

JQ: I love it when a plan works out.  Scott, we do need to be clear here.  Marvel does overprint, we are just conservative as to how much we over print by. Thanks for taking a chance on Invincible Iron Man, it really turned out to be a brilliant issue.

Cy's Cychotic Cychology asks, "Hi Joe,

1) This new brand of undetectable Skrulls are only revealed during death. Elektra was killed revealing that she was a Skrull. In Wolverine 30, Elektra was killed by Gorgon and brought back to life. According to background to Secret Invasion the Skrull Elektra infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and had run in with Wolverine. Is this no prize territory or is there an explanation?

2) Was Mephisto a skrull when he ruined Spider-Man for me? I hope so. What happened to Spider-Man's new/old powers of increased strength, stingers, and organic webs?

3) What Summer Marvel Movie do you like the best "The Incredible Hulk" or "Iron Man?"

JQ: Come on now, Cy, it's way too early to be giving out No-Prizes when there's still so much story and backstory to be told. And some of that backstory involving Elektra can be found in Mighty Avengers 16. See what I just did!  I can turn anything into a marketing opportunity!  Here's some preview art from that issue, by Khoi Pham.

Those powers are gone. But, all will be answered in time.

Tough for me to say as I haven't seen a final edit on Incredible Hulk yet.  That said, in the early editing stages I thought they were both amazing!

Quasar asks, "Hey Joe! How are you doing buddy!

I hear you are not a big fan of cosmic stories but I'll ask the head honcho, anyway!

I read in one of your Newsarma interviews that you were not a big fan of the original Quasar, Wendell Vaughn, and that you thought it best to "find someone new" and "start over. "

My question is: Why bother finding someone new if you are going to change things? Why not just use the new character and let it have its own identity-- Especially when the said character could just have been tweaked a bit to fit with the current powers. Why alienate a group of fans loyal to one of their favorite superheroes?

Another question: It seems there is a lack of writers/editors doing their homework on certain characters and story lines. Is Marvel, basically, throwing continuity out the window? Or does Marvel feel years of continuity just gets in the way of telling stories? I feel some comics from years past are meaningless i.e. Marvel, these days, seems to be putting out more stand alone type comics.

Maybe I am just getting old, eh?"

Thanks for your time.
-Matt

JQ: Matt, first let's put my answer in context.  I was asked about characters that worked and didn't work and if they didn't how would I fix them.  Quasar came up in the "doesn't work" category. That alone should tell you something. While there are those that remember the original fondly, it's not like they're legion nor are they enough to support an ongoing classic Quasar book. Believe me, I wish there were. What this simply tells me and everyone in publishing is that maybe we should try something different.

If we were looking to create a new character, we would just do that. We do it all the time.  But, what we were looking to do was recreate Quasar, hence the use of the Quasar name.

As for continuity, ask Stan Lee and he'll tell you that he was getting questions like this in the 60's as has every Editor in Chief since him. We absolutely do our best to stick to continuity, but here's the thing, we're human and sometimes we goof. Also, we produce close to 90 plus titles a month created by a huge number of talented people. Keeping it all perfect is impossible. The best we can do is to keep it as consistent as we can within the context of a make believe universe that has more moving parts than anyone could possibly control.

Derek Metaltron asks, "Dear Joe, first off, you've overseen things both that I like (X-Men, Secret Invasion) and dislike (Spider-Man's current snooze-fest) but outside OMD and BND, I've liked your ideas on the whole. One thing I've enjoyed lately is the ASTONISHING X-MEN 1 web comic on the Marvel site. Any chance of this becoming a monthly (or at least regular) thing? If so, I'd nominate either Civil War 1 or New Avengers 1 to be the next comic. Plus what if you made a PSP Digital Comics brand with entire arcs available in the same way, complete with interviews, bonus comics and other bonus features? That would be a great way of seeing both modern and classic storylines come to life.

Anyway, thanks for listening and keep up the good work (except for BND, just finish that and return things to normal already)."

'Derek Metaltron'/James (Nottingham, England)

JQ: Okay, while I respect your right to call it a snooze fest, Derek, it does beg the question, what exactly about Spidey being married made the book so much more "edge of your seat" exciting?

Okay, now that that's out of the way, the digital realm is a brave new world for us, so while I have no definite way of answering your question, I believe that at this point, anything is possible.

Paul King asks, "Joe, first, thank you for allowing so many great stories to happen! Annihilation, Bru's Cap story, Secret Invasion, the X-Men storyline...

So much great and diverse stuff! Keep it coming and I'll keep buying.

My questions:

1) Can you find out if there are any plans to bring the Claremont/Paul Smith/JRJR Uncanny X-Men story arc "From The Ashes" back into print?
2) Why are you (Marvel) going so nuts on the variant covers? Will it ever calm down?
3) I want to thank you for having such a comprehensive collected edition program. Is that something you are really going to continue as vigorously in light of Marvel's steps into Digital Comics Unlimited?
4) Finally, will we ever get just a fun story of the big Marvel Icon heroes (Cap, Thor, Hulk and etc) teaming up to beat up some of Marvel's biggest villians (Dr. Doom, Magneto, Loki and etc.) just for fun? I loved that about the original Secret Wars and miss it now. WWH and Civil War were great, just hero vs hero though.

No conflicted personal story or talking heads - just some good, old-fashioned Mighty Marvel Mayhem!"

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, thanks for your questions. Unfortunately, three out of the four questions are about things I don't make decisions on, so I had to go to the experts.
1- According to our collected editions folks, there are no current plans to go back to print on this run.
2- According to our sales guys, fans at the retail level are digging the alternates, and that's why they're doing them.
3- I'll make sure to pass your kind words to our collected editions folks who work their tails off to bring you all these great books. Also, according to them, you can expect a consistent batch of much more collected goodness coming your way!
4-Paul, oooooooooh, Paul, if you only knew what was happening right before your very eyes. Keep reading my friend.

Justin asks, "JOE, I have a question that has been plaguing me for some time now.  Whatever happened to Angel Medina? I followed him on Spidey for a while then I don't know where he went." :(

JQ: Angel is working on a little project simply called Venom: Dark Origins.  Here's some way cool Medina goodness.

Tony asks, "Joe, I see from the Summer preview on the last page of ASM 558 that MJ is apparently going to be rejoining the cast. Is she going to be a part of the regular cast, like just part of the crew? Or is she just going to be here every once in a while? I am actually kind of liking the way Peter's life is moving without her there. Keep it up!"

Anthony Cole

JQ: Anthony, while Mary Jane is making an appearance, I can't tell you yet as to whether she's going to be a constant member of the cast or just someone who comes through from time to time. Keep reading and see where it all goes from here. That said, I think it's safe to say that she is a member of the supporting cast, just not a regular one.

John asks, "Hey Joe, I just got a few questions/comments.

1. Does Alex Ross hate Marvel? In his work for DC (Kingdom Come, covers for J.L.A., J.S.A., and a couple other things) he does wonderful work that makes Leonardo Da Vinci look like some punk kid off the street, while the Avengers/Invaders (though it has just started) isn't too great. It's very dark and boring. I mean characters like Spider-Man, Captain America, the original Human Torch, and Namor should be ready to jump off the page they can look so cool! If you need an example look at Gabriele Dell'Ottos' work in Secret War. It's not just Avengers/Invaders that is so bad, the new Spider-Man poster that is being released by Alex Ross is dull. It just has Spidey on a wall. Big deal.

2. Any chance we'll get to see an old enemy of Spidey's in Brand New Day before too long? (But I do love Menace!!)

3. Which team of Avengers is your favorite? Mighty or New?

Until Wolverine is a purple 7-toed rhino with rabbit ears, Make Mine Marvel."

JQ: John, thanks for playing our game. 1. First let me say that I think that there are better ways of stating a question like this.  If you don't like a creator's work, that's cool, I get it.  But to make the leap or state in jest that they hate the people they're producing the work for, isn't fair.  That said, I understand it's not to your liking, that's cool, sorry you feel that way. But, also let me clarify, because it sounds to me like you're talking about the interior pages and Alex has only painted the covers.
2. Yes.
3. I like Mighty best.

Wonder Doug asks, "Hello Joe, I was wondering since Quicksilver started on the road to redemption in X-Factor: Quick and the Dead, can the Scarlet Witch be too far behind? Us Scarlet Witch fans have had a rough couple of years. Or can you possibly let us know when she'll be seen next?

Thanks in advance if you answer this."

JQ: Can't tell you when just yet, but I can tell you who: Allan Heinberg.

(Wanda also plays a role in New Avengers 45...)

That's right, I just laid down some more exclusive happiness on ya!

Kronicus Burnicus! asks: "Hey JQ...very excited to ask ya questions so here I go....

1. Where's Gravity? I know we last saw him in the New Fantastic Four but where has he gone to? Will he make an appearance during Secret Invasion?
2. And in X-Men...I'm kinda confused...I know right now the Young X-Men are battling the New Brotherhood which are mostly comprised of the New Mutants. But in the artwork in your last Cup o' Joe there was some artwork with the X-Men team in San Francisco and alongside them are the New Mutants. Will things be resolved for the re-uniting of the team? I just hate that the New Mutants are enemies now. Makes me sad inside."

JQ:  Kronicus, I'm very excited to answer for you.
1- There's only one place to look for a character like Gravity--and that's in upcoming issues of Avengers: The Initiative. And hey, here's an upcoming spread from that as well, with rough balloon-indicators on it and everything!

2- You're going to have to read Young X-Men to see how Cannonball gets from point A to point B. It's QUITE bumpy.

Collado asks. "Hi Joe. I've been a fan of Marvel for as long as I can remember (about 15 years). The Age of Apocalypse is my all time favorite. Nate Grey was the coolest character in my mind. I was so stoked when he was brought over to the regular Marvel Universe in X-MAN. The possibilities were endless. I couldn't wait to see him and Cable mix it up and how Nate would hold up against everyone else. I feel that the way he was trashed (in my opinion) at the end as some whacked out shaman was just wrong.

Is he EVER going to make it back? You guys bring back everyone else. I think Nate can play an interesting role in the 200 mutants left storyline...or not. I know it's not as deep and edgy as the other questions you get, but I will wait hopefully for a reply.

Thanks again for the great stories and keep mine MARVEL!"

JQ: Hey Collado, Nate's name has been brought up by more than one X-writer, so don't be surprised if he pops up again soon.

Froggy. The Froggy-ist frog that ever frogged. asks, "Dear Mr. Quesada, what are the plans for Spider-Man Family?"

JQ: Froggy, it's being re-launched as Amazing Spider-Man Family this August with several new features to bring it more solidly into Spidey's Brand New Day.

Rotating features like: "Untold Tales of Spider-Man," "The Private Life of Peter Parker," and "Aunt May: Agent of F.E.A.S.T." will be joined by a regular "Mr. and Mrs. Spider-Man" feature (by Defalco and Frenz) as well as classic reprints in "Told Tales of Spider-Man" that will be chosen to serve as background for events in current issues of Amazing Spider-Man.

RedEyedJedi asks, "Hey Joe! I was wondering if the Skrulls know about the pact Spidey and Mephisto made? Like would any Skrull agents who were assigned to watch Spidey notice his life change? Anyways Secret Invasion rules! Make Mine Marvel!!"

JQ: Red, that would be a resounding NO.

Your Mother and a Ham Sandwich asks, "Hey there JQ, what's shakin'?

Loved the X-Men previews from last week, the "army" looks awesome, and I'm really glad to see the various teams and groups being pulled together into a more cohesive unit. That being said, 2 groups are conspicuously not in that pic - X-Factor and Havok's Starjammers. I know Madrox doesn't exactly jive (that's right, jive) with what Cyclops does a lot of the time, but will there be more cooperation, or any at all, between the now opposite coast teams? As for Havok and Co. , any plans for them? Prisoners forever?"

JQ: X-Factor has a lot of other stuff going on, so they won't be making their way out to San Francisco just yet.  As for Havok and the rest of the imprisoned Starjammers, you're just going to have to wait and see what's in store for them.  Thanks, Mother!

--

That's all for this week of MyCup o' Joe folks! Next week Joe's back on the ever of Wizard World Philadelphia. What does Marvel have planned? Let's see if he lets anything slip!

If you've got a question you asked before that Joe didn't answer, make sure you post it below and we'll make sure he sees it! Got a new question? Something on your mind? A burning desire for knowledge? Post your questions below now!

Has a full checklist been released for Secret Invasion? The one I've seen only has the first half of the crossover and it seems more titles have been added since.

Hey Joe,

I just want to start by saying how much I have enjoyed these Joe Fridays for the past few years.
I'm a big fan!

Given the fact that Greg Land's history of plagiarism is well-documented, why put him on such a high profile book like Uncanny? I know he sells well, but seeing the same faces and bodies copied over and over distracts me from the story. Plus, it sends a terrible message to aspiring artists! The cover to Uncanny 500 has already been dissected into little bits of plagiarized work, and his run hasn't even begun yet. Marvel has some phenomenally talented artists who deserve a shot at Uncanny much more than someone who doesn't produce entirely original work.

Please tell me something will be done about this!

P.S.-Here is one of many links documenting his thieving ways: http://www. 4thletter.

Hello Joe,

I have asked this one alot on other boards but when are we going to see a good return and use of Iceman? Carey started on pushing his potential further and even though it's not the same we have all the hints to his power levels in the Ultimate universe, so will he be returning soon to any x-book (not meaning First Class or a flashback in Legacy)?

Joe,

I know there has been some positive reaction to the refreshing and progressive abundance of gay(Wiccan and Hulkling), lesbian(Karolina), trans-gender (Does Xavin Count?), and just plain confused (Cassie Lang and The Vision, Nico) youth in the past couple years at Marvel.
Has there any been negative backlash?

Hey JQ, thanks for answering my Digital Comics Question. Just to clarify, I'd certainly enjoy the idea of being able to view animated comics on my PSP, akin to the Metal Gear Digital Graphic Novel if you've heard of that one.

Anyway, you asked me what exactly about Spidey being married makes the book so much more "edge of your seat" exciting for me, so I'll tell you.. Well I'll be the first to say that not every about married Spiderman is great, but hes the guy I've grown up with for my entire life, MJ is a wonderful supporting character and I feel that with the right writers, it would be possible to create stories which are 'edge of seat' even with the marriage.
I would love it if the characters could develop and mature in ASM, rather than the return to the 1970's ..style.. that seems to be considered a 'Brand New Day'.

The important thing to say is that certainly for me, BND has not in any way been 'edge of my seat', and thats what is most significant.
The five main reasons for this are;
a. The villains are in no way original to me. We've got the crimeboss and villain who has the hots for Aunt May in Mr Negative (Kingpin/Doc Ock), the umpteenth Goblin with the secret identity, Freak who is awful and seems like what would happen if Carnage and Lizard had a baby, a female Speedball in Screwball, and a goth Reed Richards in Paper Doll. Add another Symbiote and another long-lost child of Kraven's and the villains have been less than stellar.

b. The editor notes seem to want to cram their love of the 1970's down our throats, its like they try to copy what Stan did in his comics at every opportunity, and it suffers for it.

c. Love Interests - Carlie Cooper is so balantly Gwen Stacy it almost feels that you might as well have brought her back to life rather than give us the Pound Shop alternative. Meanwhile beyond the hair and title its difficult to tell Black Cat and Jackpot apart.

d. Repeating Past Mistakes - I have learnt that many of the same ideas for BND have previously been seen in the Reboot of 1999, and we all know how that went. For what I mean exactly, go to http://spideykicksbutt. com/YearinReview/BlandNewDay. html
e. Spiderman's Personality - The guy has become very self-centred and selfish, for example letting the Spider Mugger go by not using his powers. Last time that happened, some Uncle of his died, and now hes become a patterazzi. This coming on top of him saying yes to a deal with the Marvel Universe's Satan has for me robbed him of the right to call himself a hero.

So there are my reasons. Sorry for the long response, but you asked and I've given my reasons why I'm afraid BND just doesn't interest me compared to the noble, pre-OMD Spidey I still love. I'm just ordered the ASM Omnibus with the Dikto stuff, so that should sate me while this woeful continuity goes on. Please consider finishing BND, Joe, and congrats on being nominated for best Latino, btw.

Doc Ock isn't really a crimeboss and Kingpin is far as the only crime organization villain , Remember the Maggia? Big Man?(spiedy's original organise crime villain)The owl? , etc etc.

Besides, Mr.Negative and Fisk are nothing alike.

Yeah, when I said (Kingpin/Doc Ock) I meant that Negative has aspects of both - hes a crimeboss like Kingpin, but he also has feelings for dear Aunt May ala Dr Octo. I'm aware the KP isn't the only Crimeboss in Marvel, he was simply the first to come to mind and yes, Li is quite diffferent to him.

Truthfully, Mr Negative is the only villain who I am interested in in the wake of BND, the rest being carbon copies of older, better foes. Li shares some aspects but is just original and quirky enough to probably warrant his own spot. If I could keep just one thing to survive BND ending (and I hope for the Spidey fans this'll be sooner rather than later), it would be the sinister Mr Li. The death of Aunt May, for example, could warrant an interesting storyline with him, maybe with Doctor Octopus along for the ride too.

But outisde that yeah, I think BND sucks.

Hy, Joe.

I've been a Marvel fan for 17 years or so and I've always hated the principle of having characters replaced, most notably the Jason Macendale Hobgoblin or the 2nd Mysterio, so, when I discovered the Ultimate Universe I immediately fell in love with an idea of retelling classical stories with new art. Anyway, Ultimatum will soon be here, and I really hope they're will be no crossovers from the Regular Universe there? I like the Ultimate Universe as a remake, not a parrallel dimension.

Also, if Spidey doesn't have a Secret Invasion Tie-In, what's he doing in the Secret Invasion?

Hey Joe. I really love everything that is coming out of Marvel. To heck with the complaints or disagreements over what is going on in certain storylines, It's entertaining and it always brings me back to the comic shops. Controversial or not, I just want to know what is going to happen next. If only every title series and storylines were made into movies and TV series. The Digital comic for Astonishing X-Men 1 that was on Marvel. com was awesome and I have to agree that you should do it more often and to certain 1 issues or storyline sets. A couple of years back, Intec Interactive did something like this for Marvel, which I still own (Ultimates, Ultimate X-Men, Daredevil, Incredible Hulk, Origin). I've showed it to a couple of my friends who were skeptical on reading Comic Books and saying that it was childish until they watched it (I keep saying that reading would be better...) and they were hooked. I think more of these Digital Comics that people can watch like if they were watching it like a movie would help bring more fans into the Comic book world.

Your thoughts on this?

Why's it called Amazing Spider-Man Family - why not just call it Giant-Sized Amazing Spider-Man? The title as it is I find utterly confusing.
As it is Spider-Man's family is the sum total of Aunt May!

Hey Joe,

I'm loving what marvel is doing. However, I've been missing something for a while and I'm begging for a fix. Can we get a villain based mini series soon? Bullseye: Greatest Hits, Zemo: Born Better, Taskmaster, and Modok's 11 were all great. And I know the T-bolts are set to big this summer in Secret Invision. But, come on man, bring on the bad guys.

Hi Joe! I'm a big fan. I just have a couple of questions for you.

1) I understand why Cyclops broke up the X-Men but what I'm wondering is why would he bring together a group of Young X-Men right after he broke up the more experienced X-Men?
2) Awhile back ago I heard there was going to be a New Avengers issue dealing with the Skulls involvement in One More Day.
Is that true?
3) Well the New Captain America (Bucky) be involved in Secret Invasion?
4) I heard a rumor that Mark Millar's run on the Fantastic Four takes place after Secret Invasion.
Is that true?
5) Any Power Pack plans in 616 continuity?
6) Will the Skrull Kill Crew get an ongoing series after Secret Invasion?
7) Can Deadpool please join the Mighty Avengers?
8) Can Cloak and Dagger please join the New Avengers and/or get an ongoing series?

Now, I really can't remember clearly if I heard anything about this previously, but there are a couple of things I'd like to know.

First off, is there any chance we get to see some stuff by the extraordinarily talented Tim Sale in the coming year or so, after his contract runs out with that other company? I grew fond of his work after seeing it in previous comics and can't wait to see what he would have in store for Marvel.

Secondly...Ultimate Avengers 3......WHEN?! I feel I'm getting too anxious about it, but I know it'll certainly be worth the wait.

Thanks, Joe.

3)How many variants will be released for Uncanny X-Men 500 and who will they be drawn by?

Hey Joe,

First off, I'm loving Secret Invasion, and am constantly psyched with each new issue that comes out. It's also got some of the best tie-ins I've had the pleasure of reading with the two Avengers books.

Now on to my question. I've got a "breaking in" question with a twist - I'm a writer, and I live in Israel. This combination makes it very hard to break into the comics field, as there is an ocean between me and the company I want to write for (that'll be you guys). Flying over for every con to shake hands and network is way to expensive for me.
So what can I, as a writer, do to get on your spotlight half a world away?

Many thanks,

Thank you for answering my questions last week Joe!

Of coarse I have more.

1) How come a now non existent marriage bring people back from the dead, create new villians, erase Spider-man's unmasking, and make JJJ lose his company? Mephisto didn't lie to Spidey did he? That is so unlike Mephisto, he wouldn't have underlying reasons to make a deal just so he could benefit.

2) Was there any discussion in the Marvel Bullpen of just simply have Mary Jane leave or divorce Peter, afterall she has done it before?

3) I love Captain America. The book has been excellent, but with the book and Secret Invasion, and Avengers/Invaders I have been seeing so many Captain Americas my head is spinning.
Any resolution in the near future?

4) Mark Millar's Fantastic Four is great, andy plans for it directlt tieing in with other Marvel Books or Secret Invasion, since Reed is a huge part of it?

I know I complain, but I have been a Marvel Man for over 30 years.
keep up the good work!

Hey Joe,

couple of quick questions for you if you don't mind answering them...

1) Was it really necessary for Marvel to abruptly cancel New Xmen, a comic with a large fan base and characters alot of people loved! it was just becoming something GREAT and then it died quietly in a cross over event... it was my fave comic and i miss the team of young mutants alot.
any chance the team could re-form in San Fran?

2) when will we see a proper YA series? again this was one of my fave books and it just seems their story stalled. (if not a proper series then hows a bout a one shot with Teddy and Billy goin to San Francisco... they mentioned it was something they wanted to do in the YA presents wiccan issue!)

3)is Young Xmen going to improve by the end of the first arc? only in my opinion the comic hasnt been ANYWHERE near as good as new xmen was in art or writing...

and last question

4)How long will Xmen legacy continue to have "lost" ..style.. flashback for Xavier? only ive only been reading comics since 2003 and to be honest alot of legacy deals with past events that kinda bore me as i they dont really mean anything to me.

Thanks for answering... if you indeed do,lol

My question is this: How is Angel Medina not part of the lineup of artists in the Spidey Braintrust?!? His Spider-Man looks stupendous! It could even be considered...dare I say it? (I dare): McFarlane-esque.
(Not that he's copying the McFarlane ..style.., just that it looks almost as stupendous.

Oh yeah, and you should call in to Howard Stern more often.

Hi Joe. Firstly I'd like to say that I've been reading Marvel comics for almost 30 years now and creatively I believe the comics is at the best they've been since the Lee/Kirby days; so thank you for that. I do have a few questions which I hope are answerable.

1) Is there any chance the Hulk newspaper strips will be reprinted or will I have to bankrupt myself on ebay?

2) Will you make it to Wizardworld Texas this year?

3) Is the battle to get Alan Moore to write for Marvel again lost forever?

4) Will there be a reprinting of the Al Milgrom run on the Hulk to bridge to gap between the Byrne/David visionaries titles? If so will it include the Peter David written 328?

Thank you for your time,
Nick.

Hey Joe,
I hope this finds you well.

Couple of questions for you:

1. You are doing some great work in forming partnerships with guys like Orson Scott Card and Stephen King and I guess it could be said that working with those guys, on adaptions of their books is a form of 'licensed project' but do you have any interest in licensed projects in the same way as Marvel did in the 80s with GI Joe and Transformers.
What stops Marvel these days from bidding for a book like GI Joe when the license comes up?

2.
Will Origin ever continue?
You set the benchmark really high with the original and I guess there is more story to tell from the point where we left Logan, would you consider telling the next chapter without the original Origin team?

KIDDING ;) But seriously, can you tell us who will be taking over their editing duties on the various books they work on in particular Iron Man: Director of SHIELD? And in a related question, will this Iron Man title still exist post-SI with Nick Fury back in the game, and are the Knaufs going to return?
2) Is Paul Jenkins going to get around to revealing the identity of Hickey, Speedball's former cellmate anytime soon, or have an upcoming Marvel project you can reveal?
3) Will the new characters from the Gamma Corps appear in upcoming Hulk stories or any Marvel book soon, in particular Gideon Wilson, a relative of Sam "The Falcon" Wilson.

4) What does the future hold for Canada's super team Omega Flight and will its American team members USAgent and Julia Carpenter ever return to the states?

Hey Joe!! one of the many loving Secret Invasion, and one of the few (it seems) loving BND. as a matter of fact i'm loving so much stuff that you all are putting out that wallet is constantly crying.

few questions...
1) in X-Men:Legacy, which is awesome by the way, it seems that Mr Sinister has had his dirty, little hands in the lives of the X-Men since before the beginning. (cyclops and it seems xavier). Any plans to make him a major big bad for the X-Men? i always thought he should have been.

2) it seems that there is some legitimate heat between the E-I-C of the Distinguished Competition and yourself. i remember a few years back there was talk of a pretty sweet sounding DD/Batman crossover (penned by bendis i believe).
have things cooled to a point that maybe there could be some talks about this?

anywho...

IN MY PERSONAL OPINION CAPTAIN AMERICA IS MARVELS BEST BOOK RIGHT NOW AS A MATTER OF FACT I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT!!!! I LOVE THE NEW (BUCKY) CAPTAIN AMERICA STORY VERY MUCH. BRUBAKERS WRITING REALLY BRINGS ALOT OUT IN THE CHARACTERS IN THE BOOK. I THINK BUCKY IS BETTER THAN STEVE... THIS STORY HAS BREATHED A BREATH OF FRESH AIR INTO CAPTAIN AMERICA...WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY QUESTION.... IS STEVE GOING TO RETURN??? IM SURE YOU CANT ANSWER DIRECTLY BUT I ONLY ASK BECAUSE IF THE ANSWER IS YES I WILL BE CRUSHED!!!! PLEASE KEEP BUCKY THE NEW CAP!!!!

P.
S THE BUCKY AND FALCON STORY IN 38 WAS GRADE A KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

P.S.S AND I JUST HAVE TO MENTION THAT AT FIRST I WAS AGAINST THE NEW CAP WITH GUNS (BEFORE I READ 34) BUT I NOW THINK THE GUN WAS THE BEST ADDITION TO THE NEW CAP...AND WHEN HE STABBED CROSSBONES IN THE LEG....PRICELESS!!!!!!

Hey Joe, I need some support on this, buddy.

My name is Mike and I'm a Sentry fan. I know it's currently not cool to like Bob, but I've loved the character ever since his last mini, and I always pick up Mighty for the sole reason of hoping to catch some glimpse of redemption for the character. It makes me sad when I see Bob completely nuetered by mere mention of the Void. (by the way, I was under the impression that he was freed of that crippling Void-fear when he threw his alter ego into the sun? Very therapuedic for the guy, I would imagine.) Please tell me, are there plans to bring the Sentry back to a respectable character again? I feel like I am the only one who really wants to see the Sentry get back his stability and be a force to be reckoned with again. Mighty Avengers 14 didnt offer a lot of hope for this fan.

Mr. Girl is the Self Defeatist Mustache Twist

(My question for Joe Q...long post, but simple question)

In Amazing Spider-Man, Peter, his personality, is coming across as kinda, well...dumb.
I know he is supposed to be a faulty person, very imperfect, making the wrong decisions more often than not (I can relate all too well), but why has he been such a mimbo-air head lately? lol

Ult. Spider-Man's Pete feels ten time's more adult-grounded-intellectual than the one in Amazing. Peter has always had a sense of introspection, personal reflection, that made the character resonate far more than the other super heroes, and I'm not getting that at all out of his character now; he feels kind of flat and soulless, like that friend whos tons of fun, and very smart, but man, when you look behind those eyes in conversation, not a single self aware spark of life is existent in there.

So I guess my question would be, "I know you wanted light-hearted care free Peter back in comics, after years of him being a bit too dark, but will be ever see a deeper side to Peter again...not one who carelessly goes through the motions of his daily life, but thinks, reflects and isn't so "air-headed?"

Ironic or whatever, but this one feels totally irresponsible.

One more thing, more Marcos Martin please, that shot of him sipping coffee overlooking the NY streets is my favorite page of Spider-Man in years!

Hi Joe,

1)While reading X-Men: First Class, I had something of an epiphany! Jeff Parker and Spider-man:BND are a match made in heaven (and this is from a reader, less than taken with the whole BND concept).
Any chance of seeing it happen?

2) Any chance of a Simon Furman penned Death's Head story (hey, a guy can dream!)?

Thanks
Chris

Joe,

I have really enjoyed The Twelve storyline, have high hopes about seeing more Golden age characters in the Avengers/Invaders series, and look forward to seeing the Agents of Atlas in the Secret Invasion Who do you trust one-shot.
I have two questions:
1.
Are there other plans to make more use of other Golden Age characters in the works that you might be able to hint about?
2. In the Twelve 0 we got to see the original stories of the Laughing Mask, Rockman, and the Phantom Reporter.
Are there plans to reprint some of the stories for the other characters in the Twelve? Maybe include them in a trade hardback like was done with the Agents of Atlas?

Thanks for putting out good books
Ben
