MyCup o' Joe
WEEK 11

30 May, 2008

MyCup o' Joe is the weekly communiqué from Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada to the legion of Mighty Marvelites Assembled! Every Friday, Joe will sit down with journalist Jim McLauchlin to answer questions on the pressing issues of the day at Marvel and throughout comics.

And you get to chip in as well! Joe will be answering YOUR questions every week! To get in on the fun, post your questions at the bottom of this page now!

JM: So let's talk about numbers…

JQ: Sure. How's "12"?

JM: It'll work. But specifically, sales numbers. The April '08 sales charts were recently released by Diamond Comics Distribution, so…categorize it for us, in a general sense: On the day these hit every month, is it the buzz in the office? Or do people still have their heads down making sure the next issue of Amazing Spider-Man hits its date?

JQ: The honest truth is that when we were first digging our way out of bankruptcy and trying to revive our publishing business, the monthly sales numbers were a huge buzz in the office, especially as we started to take over the top spots from the competition in monthly sales and then later in collected editions. Now, while I can't speak for others, for me the real buzz is what are our upcoming stories. I really worry less about sales and more about excitement within our content. If we nail that then I honestly feel sales will follow. To me, sales numbers become a big buzz in the office only when a book exceeds modern sales trends or even our lofty expectations.

JM: One could easily argue April was a good month for you. On a unit basis, Marvel had 44% of the comics market all by itself. Do people there take pride in this?

JQ: I'd be lying to you if I said, no. Of course we do. Who doesn't take pride in the fact that people are responding to the hard work you put into a job? Yes, it's very gratifying, but you have to keep it in focus because things can change in the blink of an eye if you're not diligent and get complacent.

JM: How much schadenfreude is felt at the expense of a DC, Dark Horse, or whoever else?

JQ: How much what?

JM: Schadenfreude. It's a German word that roughly translates to "finding joy in the misfortunes of others."

JQ: Absolutely none. It's nice to be 1 but I certainly don't want to see other publishers hurting. First and foremost, while I work at and love Marvel, I love this industry and comics even more. Ultimately I want to see DC, Dark Horse, etc., all have great success because it means health for everyone in our industry from publishers to retailers to all the great talents that work within it.

JM: Do you believe comics, at this point in time, is a zero-sum game? One extra sale here means one less sale there?

JQ: No I don't, but we do need to keep our eyes open because things are getting tough all around due to this current economy. What I have heard from one retailer about a month ago was that it isn't that the people are reticent to buy comics, but that some just don't have the gas money to commute to the store. It's a general belt-tightening in America that we need to be aware of. By the way, this isn't just comics that's going through this, but every single business that I know. What I'm very optimistic about is that I personally believe that after the crash of the late nineties, publishers—and especially retailers—are smarter than they've ever been, and while we may see a dip here and there, everyone is going to shrewdly weather whatever storm may or may not come. Comics are a very strong and savvy industry now.

JM: What do you think rank-and-file fans really know—or perhaps more importantly, what don't they know—about these numbers? What do they really mean in context, from where you sit?

JQ: Probably the one thing they don't know about these numbers is that sometimes the books that are in the top slots with respect to monthly sales aren't necessarily the ones that are doing best in the bookstore market or subscriptions.

JM: To that point, your Marvel Adventures books—usually termed the "kids books"—are among the strongest in your subscription base, right?

JQ: Yes, they are.

JM: I guess I'm asking you to project yourself into the mind of Joe Average Fan, but do you think fans care too much-slash-not enough about sales numbers? Outside the obvious dilemma of "if it doesn't sell, it gets canceled," what do you think about fans' apparent "rooting interest"?

JQ: Outside of the fan of the low selling book on the verge of cancellation, I don't think it means a hill of beans outside of bragging rights. If you're a Marvel fan, it's good times and you poke fun at your DC brethren. On the occasional times DC overtakes us, then the reverse is true. But outside of that I can't imagine what else it could possible mean to fans.

JM: What happens on the front end of something like Secret Invasion? Obviously, you must have projections for you to apply a marketing budget against, just like Ford has to guesstimate their '09 models and Coca-Cola needs to approximate next month's Sprite sales. Did you have a number in mind for Secret Invasion 1?

JQ: Oh yeah, absolutely. But this is completely the purview of our sales and marketing guys. What's astonishing to me is how often they're spot-on with their projections. Next year I'm taking a few of them to Vegas!

JM: Is there a number on that book you would have been disappointed in? And on the flip side, a level at which you would have said, "It's a gusher!"?

JQ: Yup, you better believe it. And before you ask, yes, it was a gusher.

JM: Do you ever take a look at these charts and just scratch your head? Is there a book or two—Marvel or not—that just feels like it sells way too high or way too low to you?

JQ: All the time, but that has more to do with my own personal tastes in story and genre. From that point of view, I'm no different than any of our fans. That's why I've always said that we don't just publish things that I like. To do that would be complete and utter arrogance, and a surefire way to go out of business. An example I've used way too often are the cosmic stories. I've never been a fan of them, but that doesn't mean that I don't believe that there are people out there who like them. So, since Annihilation we've been knee-deep in cosmic stuff. Even though it's not my favorite segment of the Marvel U., it's proven to be a huge success for us.

JM: We may quickly be approaching he point where I have to fly there and kick your ass to get your Hulk cover. What's status, man?

JQ: I'm very busy and very tired.

JM: C'mon. George Tuska did this masterpiece, ably inked by Joe Rubenstein! And George is 92 years old! What's your excuse?

JQ: Okay, I guess I have none. Oh, hey! Look over there—reader's questions!

Dan asks:
Hello Joe,
When are we going to see a return and good use of Iceman? Will he be returning to a current X-book (meaning not First Class or a flashback in Legacy)?

JQ: You're in luck, Dan. Iceman is going to be the major focal point in the four-issue X-Men: Manifest Destiny miniseries. It takes a close look at the move to San Francisco and the bigger picture of what it means to the X-Men. And, as if it couldn't get any better, writer Mike Carey is writing your beloved Iceman!
And even tho' ya didn't ask for it, we'll show Iceman some more love in X-Men: First Class 16, guest-starring the Human Torch and Spider-Man as well!

I Shot Liberty Valance asks:
Joe,
I know there has been positive reaction to the refreshing and progressive abundance of gay (Wiccan and Hulkling), lesbian (Karolina), and trans-gender (Does Xavin Count?) youth characters in the past couple years at Marvel. Has there any been negative backlash?

JQ: Liberty, there has been from time to time, but not much in recent memory. So much of this has to do with the political climate in the country at the time. There was a time four to five years ago where any story we told depicting the variety of lifestyles within our world would receive some negative backlash. These days, not so much. But like all things, the climate can change overnight, and then all bets are off. However, the one thing that I've always preached here at Marvel is that we cannot publish in fear. Marvel has always been about reflecting the world that we all live in, and as long as we do that as fairly as possible, everything will turn out fine.

Qui *Lemon* asks:
So what happened to G.I. Ant-Man?

JQ: Lemon, lets just say that Tom Brevoort gave Dan Slott a big slap.

Pedro asks:
Hey Joe. I really love everything that is coming out of Marvel. If only every title was made into a movie or TV series. The digital comic for Astonishing X-Men 1 that was on Marvel. com was awesome, and I have to agree that you should do it more often.
A couple of years back, Intec Interactive did some "digital comics" for Marvel, which I still own. I've showed them to a few friends who were skeptical of comic books, thinking they were childish. Well, they thought this until they watch this! Then they were hooked. I think more of these digital comics that people can watch as if they were watching a movie would help bring more fans into the comic book world.  Your thoughts on this?

JQ: Pedro, I think you're right. But I also think this is a case of "there is no spoon." In other words, I think that there are many ways of getting new people into the fold, whether it be through the digital experience, our movies, animation, collected editions, video games, toys, what have you. All of these things tie into one singular vision of the Marvel Lifestyle or MarveLife as I like to call it. That's copyright and TM Joey Q!

But hey, good job, Pedro, keep bringing 'em in!

Eric Brown asks:
Since getting into comics, I've discovered D-Man, who has become one of my favorite characters. He's got a lot of interesting aspects to him (being seen as a Z-list hero despite formerly being an Avenger, his status as a protector of the homeless). Is he going to be appearing in any books such as Avengers: The Initiative any time soon? He'd go perfectly, being teased by Ant-Man and Taskmaster.

JQ: Eric, that all depends on quickly Dan Slott recovers from that slapdown.

Patrick asks:
Hey Joe,
I'm loving what Marvel is doing, but I'm begging for a fix. Can we get a villain-based mini-series soon? Bullseye: Greatest Hits, Zemo: Born Better, Taskmaster, and Modok's 11 were all great. And I know the T-bolts are set to be big this summer in Secret Invasion. But come on man…bring on the bad guys!

JQ: As we move ahead into 2009, Patrick, you'll be seeing a lot more focus on the big villains of the Marvel Universe, but it's premature to say anything more just yet.

Phillip asks:
1) Will there be another Loners mini-series (I love Darkhawk!)
2) In a "Hero Registration" world, will the Hulk's old friends, the Pantheon, be showing up?

JQ:
1) There are no immediate plans for the Loners, but individual characters from that book will be showing up. So keep an eye out for Darkhawk!
2) And there's' nothing in the immediate future for The Pantheon, but they're certainly not outside the realm of possibility!

Antisocial asks:
Hi Joe. Firstly I'd like to say that I've been reading Marvel comics for almost 30 years now and creatively I believe the comics are at the best they've been since the Lee/Kirby days. I have a few questions which I hope are answerable.
1) Is there any chance the Hulk newspaper strips will be reprinted, or will I have to bankrupt myself on eBay?
2) Will you make it to Wizard World Texas this year?
3) Is the battle to get Alan Moore to write for Marvel again lost forever?
4) Will there be a reprinting of the Al Milgrom run on the Hulk to bridge to gap between the John Byrne and Peter David Hulk Visionaries books? If so, will it include the Peter David-written Incredible Hulk 328?

Thank you for your time,
Nick.

Thanks for the kind words, Nick. Here are your answers.
1) Not in the near future that I'm aware of.
2) Nope, too many shows, not enough time.
3) I never say never with respect to anything, but at the moment, no.
4) According to our collected editions folk, not yet.

Prophet of Doom asks:
Hey Joe! I'm one of the many loving Secret Invasion, and one of the few (it seems) loving "Brand New Day." As a matter of fact, I'm loving so much stuff that my wallet is crying!
A few questions…
1) In X-Men: Legacy, it seems that Mr. Sinister has had his dirty little hands in the lives of the X-Men since before the beginning. Any plans to make him a major big baddie for the X-Men? I always thought he should have been.
2) It seems that there is some legitimate heat between the Distinguished Competition and yourself. I remember a few years back, there was talk of a pretty sweet-sounding Daredevil/Batman crossover (penned by Brian Bendis, I believe). Have things cooled to a point that maybe there could be some talks about this?

JQ: Prophet, thanks for the kind words. First with respect to "BND," you're not in the minority, my friend. What happens is with most things on the 'net, the naysayers scream loudest while those that dig stuff just dig it and go about doing what they do. That said, appreciate the props.
1) Check out Messiah CompleX if you haven't read it. Mr. Sinister WAS a major big baddie in that storyline. And how about the classic Inferno storyline? Also, pay close attention to Legacy. There are some big changes a-comin'.
2) As I remember this, I had nothing really to do with Bendis' offer to write a DD/Batman story (with Ed Brubaker doing the DC end of it at the time). This was something that started online and then carried over to a convention where someone from DC interrupted Bendis' panel to state that Paul Levitz was forbidding the crossover to happen until Marvel decided to fire me. So, as far as animosity or heat between myself and someone up at DC keeping a crossover like this from happening, well…you really you need to ask the folks at DC about this because this is their issue, not mine.

Rodeo asks:
I'm a Sentry fan. I know it's currently not cool to like Bob Reynolds, but I've loved the character, and I always pick up Mighty Avengers for the sole reason that I might catch some glimpse of redemption for the character. It makes me sad when I see Bob completely neutered by the mere mention of the Void. (By the way, I was under the impression that he was freed of that crippling Void-fear when he threw his alter ego into the sun? Very therapeutic for the guy, I would imagine!) Please tell me, are there plans to make the Sentry back a respectable character again? I feel like I am the only one who really wants to see the Sentry get back his stability and be a force to be reckoned with again. Mighty Avengers 14 didn't offer a lot of hope for this fan.

JQ: Rodeo, the Sentry is truly one of the most complex and coolest characters we have in the Marvel U. today. We're currently working very hard to make him the major player he deserves to be, as well as—potentially!—the greatest hero in the Marvel U.
That said, if you're at Wizard World Philadelphia this weekend, tune in to Marvel panels for a Sentry-specific announcement…

Nemo asks:
With Mockingbird apparently reappearing, is there any chance that Hawkeye's first mini-series which first brought them together might get reprinted as a Premiere hardcover?

JQ: Nemo, our sales folk, they like this idea, so perhaps!

Ben asks:
Joe,
I have really enjoyed The Twelve, and have high hopes for seeing more Golden Age characters in the Avengers/Invaders series, and look forward to seeing the Agents of Atlas in the Secret Invasion: Who Do You Trust one-shot. I have two questions:
1) Are there other plans to make more use of other Golden Age characters in the works that you might be able to hint about?
2) In The Twelve 0, we got to see the original stories of the Laughing Mask, Rockman, and the Phantom Reporter. Are there plans to reprint some of the stories for the other characters in The Twelve? Maybe include them in a trade hardback like was done with Agents of Atlas?
Thanks for putting out good books
Ben

JQ: Ben, glad you're diggin' it.
1) There'll be some other golden age characters turning up further down the line in Avengers/Invaders, sort of. Here's a cool Alex Ross-illustrated pencil-portrait of come of the other classic mystery-men who'll be putting in an appearance.

2) We've toyed with the possibility of reprinting some other vintage stories of the Twelve characters, but nothing concrete is planned right this second. One of the real considerations is being able to get our hands on good reproduction materials for these classic old stories, which can be both costly and time-consuming. But if enough readers demand it, you never know.

iPeter asks:
Hey Joe, I'm a relatively new member to the comic book fan fold, having only started about six months ago. Question for you:
Is NYX ever going to come back? It was one of the first pieces I picked up and those early issues were amazing. The art was excellent and the writing was just as good. Any chance we'll see any more of that by you? I need closure!
Having said that, loving Marvel right now, lots of great series and lots of stuff I need to catch up on. Feel free to give me a tip or two on what a budding young fan should go for, on the Marvel side of things.

JQ: Peter, while I won't be returning to NYX any time soon, this is your lucky day! NYX is back in August with NYX: No Way Home, six issues written by New York Times bestselling author Marjorie Liu (author of the Dirk & Steele series of novels) and illustrated by Kalman Andrasofszky. A little time has passed, but Kiden and Bobby Soul and Lil' Bro and Tatiana's story is really only just beginning.

As for what you should be reading? Wow, that's a long list. I would recommend to get a taste of just about everything we're doing, but for starters, give The Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Incredible Hercules, and Uncanny X-Men a try. I'd also pick up an Ultimates title or two while you're at it. This will give you a nice cross section of the Marvel super hero universe and perhaps point you in the direction of whatever might catch your fancy.
And I'd be really remiss if I didn't point out once again the Marvel Adventures titles. They're done-in-ones, not particularly continuity-heavy, and always well-reviewed, it seems!
Welcome aboard o' newly anointed True Believer!

Kevin asks:
Hey Joe,
I just want to start by saying how much I have enjoyed these Joe Fridays for the past few years. I'm a big fan!
Given the fact that Greg Land's history of plagiarism is well-documented, why put him on such a high profile book as Uncanny X-Men? I know he sells well, but seeing the same faces and bodies copied over and over distracts me from the story. Plus, it sends a terrible message to aspiring artists! The cover to Uncanny 500 has already been dissected into little bits of plagiarized work, and his run hasn't even begun yet. Marvel has some phenomenally talented artists who deserve a shot at Uncanny much more than someone who doesn't produce entirely original work.
Please tell me something will be done about this!

JQ: See, here's the problem Kevin: I personally feel that Greg is getting a raw deal from certain fans. First, a little history…
Ever since the dawn of time, artists have been taking inspiration from outside sources. And ever since the dawn of photography, using photos as reference. What makes it seem more prevalent today than ever is that the 'net makes it easier for fans to find the same photo ref that our artists are using. I'm no different than Greg in this matter. I use photo ref quite often. Sometimes I take it myself, other times I dig it up. And I'm not alone here. What's happened with Greg is that it's become a witch hunt and way too many people are having way too good a time hurting a tremendous artist's reputation when he isn't doing anything that is any different than any of us. Every line he draws now comes under scrutiny and in so many cases, people are "seeing" things where are none. Here's the thing, if you've ever met Greg you would see what a lovely guy he is and how much love he has for comics. He also happens to be a guy who works very hard to meet his deadlines, and from that point of view, he's better than most of us, and the kind of artist so many fans wish we had more of. I could go on and on about how many times Greg has bailed us out from some very bad deadline crunches. Like John Romita Jr., he's a real team player, and has come through in the clutch more times than I can remember. He's a hard working guy, but there are some online fans that are giving him a raw deal.

Simply put, his books do sell very well because he draws beautifully. If you don't like it or how he goes about it, that's cool, I get it, so just don't buy the books he draws. I don't see why it can't be as simple as that, rather than taking the time and energy to try to get a lynch mob together to hurt a really great guy. I don't understand what value anyone can take from that?

Here, let me put it to you this way and forgive me for speaking frankly. I want you to close your eyes after reading this and imagine this possible scenario. Lets say you got what you wanted and through your efforts such a stir occurred through fandom and every publisher that Greg Land was no longer working in comics and couldn't do what he loved to do; what he was meant to do to support his family. Would you feel better? Could you sleep at night? If the answer to both of these questions is yes, then I guess there's nothing more than I can say on the subject outside of keep doing what you're doing. If the answer is no, and if you can imagine for a moment what it would be like to be on the other side of this, well, then I leave it up to you.

See ya in the funny books,
JQ

Hey Joe,

Will Danger from Astonishing X-men be showing up again? In future issues of 'Astonishing' or maybe even in X-men: Legacy?

Hey Joe, long-time reader first time asker

1)When will Spidey's BND end and we will start to see classic villains like rhino and doctor octopus again?
2)When can we expect the mystery of Red Hulk to be solved and for Banner to be in charge of his own book again as previews suggest it won't happen until aronud November?
3)How many variants will be released for Uncanny X-Men 500 and who will they be drawn by?
4)When will Marvel release a final checklist for all Secret Invasion tie-ins?
5)Is Marvel planning to release the X-Men animated series on DVD antime soon?

Good question.
And with the end of BND, will Peter and MJ get married?

Two quick things:

First-I'm a proud Sentry fan! Hell, it was the Sentry arc in New Avengers that got my lady into comics to begin with. I never really understood the need to compare him to Superman and than complain that the Sentry doesn't act like Superman. A menatlly damaged hero is always better than a sane hero anyway. That's why everyone likes Batman better than Superman. Persoanlly I would love to see Marvel's batsh!t crazy World's Finest Sentry/Moon Knight. Now there's an idea whose time has come.

Speaking of great ideas...

Second- VENOM ON THE HULK!! Make it happen!
Remember kids: HULK SMASH AND EAT YOUR BRAINS!!

Hi Joe! I'm a big fan. I just have a couple of questions for you.

1) I understand why Cyclops broke up the X-Men (because of Xavier’s death and Iron Man wanting the X-Men to register) but what I'm wondering is why would he bring together a group of Young X-Men right after he broke up the more experienced X-Men?
2) Awhile back ago I heard there was going to be a New Avengers issue dealing with the Skulls involvement in One More Day.
Is that true?
3) Well the New Captain America (Bucky) be involved in Secret Invasion?
4) I heard a rumor that Mark Millar's run on the Fantastic Four takes place after Secret Invasion.
Is that true?
5) Any Power Pack plans in Earth-616 continuity?
6) Did Nextwave take place on Earth-616?
7) Will the Skrull Kill Crew get an ongoing series after Secret Invasion?
8) Can Deadpool please join the Mighty Avengers?
9) Can Cloak and Dagger please join the New Avengers and/or get an ongoing series?
10) When I get older I want to write for comic books.
So I was just wondering how would I be able to get a job from Marvel when I get older?
11) How old do I have to be to write comics for Marvel?

Hello Mr.

Joe Quesada

I have a couple questions revolving on whats coming up with Thor....

1.)Since he has just returned from comic death and right away beat the hell out of Iron Man. Can we expect to see that final brawl between the Asgardians and Iron Man with his Registration attack squad.

2.

) Are there any plans for a Thor and Sentry all out battle any time soon

3.) Will we ever see classic characters return to the pages of Thor like Beta Ray Bill and some of the other non Loki rogue gallery.

4.) Finally a non Thor Question.... a while back you hinted that after Secret Invasion(which is spectacular by the way) we may get some insight and maybe a mini series on The Sentry.
Is this actually in the works or did I misinterpret?

So to close up thanks for doing a great job over there at marvel and giving me a reason to love comics again.

Joe to start off with you are the reason I started reading comics again after a 6 year break. What you did with the Marvel Knights group and then with the whole Marvel comics line got me super excited to be reading comics again and has kept me that way.

I know you don't oversee the trade department but maybe you can answer this question. I have recently been trying to replace most of my collection with the hardcover collected editon of the story but I am finding that most of the stuff I want is long out of print.
Is there any plans to put things like the New X Men omnibus and the Alias omnibus and some of the older over..size..d hardcovers back in print or am I forced to endlsly search eBay?

Hiya Joe. REALLY wish I could've been at WWPhilly this year, but I heard about something you mentioned at one panel called the Marvel Studios creative committee, where Marvel and comic creators are taking more active roles in the comic films being developed. Have you been to any recently, and anything down the line for Marvel films that has you really excited? Also, with the Wolverine prequel coming out next summer, does Marvel have plans to tie-in with the movie, in particular, projects or stories involving Gambit and of course, everyone's favorite Merc with a Mouth....DEADPOOL!

2)When will Amazing Spider-man stop being Brand New day, and just be regualr old Spidey?

Thanks

Slewo Ω,

Hi Joe I'm a big fan and sad I couldn't come to WWPhilly and meet you, and hoping you answer a few questions.

1 Can we have a criterea for what gets asked so that you're not answering the same questions week in week out? Seeing a question like will deadpool join the Avengers answered for the 3rd week straight is a little annoying.

2 Will we see more difficulties for characters like the X-Men, and Runaways who are basing themselves in California and flouting the SHRA and Stark? Since isn't there a conflict when the former is lying to Stark about their status, and the latter is flagrantly violating the SHRA?

3 Will we ever see Illinois' Initiative team the Spaceknights? Show some love for my home! And no z-list heroes either.

And if you read this I just wanted to say 2 years ago when I got on comics I mostly read DC, now I read all Marvel save Geoff Johns of course, and thanks for making these book more than worth every dollar spent (which is alot).

Hi,

1) The New Xmen were my favorite mutant team before messiah complex, the next thing i new they just ended. will we ever see the Team reform? or atleast see all my faves (Anole, Hellion, Pixie etc...) together again in an X book?

2)Will Skottie Young be on another marvel book soon? hes one of the best of your artist in my opinion...

3)will we see the initiative recruits that graduated (Hardball, Cloud 9 ect...) anytime soon? i really grew to like those characters and again, just like the new xmen they seemed to get split up quite quickly....

Cheers.

Hey Joe,

Marvel is really the best its been in years, thanks for taking all my money!

Only one question, but its been really bugging me - in Messiah CompleX, Forge said there were two timelines and sent two of Madrox's dupes into those futures.
We all know what happened to the one that went to Bishop's timeline, but its like everyone forgot about the other one, and Ihaven't seen any mention of it since, nor any mention in any upcoming solicits! What gives?

Thanks again, and keep on making mine Marvel!

Hi Joe,

I want to give some props first. It seems that recently you have the market cornered on most of the Amazing writers in comics: Bendis, Vaughn, Millar, Ellis, Ennis, Fraction, Brunaker, Reed, I cannot write his name so the guy who writes Cable, Abnett/Lanning, The Knaufs, Aarons, Whedon, JMS and soo many more. I think they are a big reason while Marvel is just whipping the competition. Also, congrats on the HUGE success of Iron Man. Here is hoping Hulk will rock just as hard.
Now onto my questions:

1. I believe 3 of the best Marvel U books on the market right now are Iron Man; DOS, Daredevil and Captain America. I also find those 3 characters, and the others in their world, constantly filled with a great deal of strife and the nothing-goes-right-it-only-gets-worse for them syndrome going on.
Will we see some relief for Matt Milla and Foggy, Tony, and Bucky, Sam and Sharon? I affectionately call it the Whedon-..style.. writing where you make the character as miserable as possible and keep piling it on.
So is there a light at the end of the tunnel for these characters?

2. I love the new Thor.
Just one question why Oklahoma? I know that is where the Hammerfell but still Oklahoma?

3. I know your feelings on the Cosmic side of things but Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy are just amazing.
If they have continued success will we have more Cosmic stories?,

4. You found a gem of a writer in Aaron Coliete on Ultimate X-Men. I know he is only scheduled to go to issue 97. What is happening after that? Is UXM going away until after Ultimatum or permanently? If so do you have plans for Coliete to work on something else? As a personal note I know USM isn't going anywhere but PLEASE don't drop UXM of UFF. I know tyey have both dropped sales-wise but I think they are still solid sellers and the trades are doing well. While both series have struggled recently they are both coming out of the funk in a huge way.

5.
Why is it soo popular to hate on Jeph Loeb?

6. This is more of an idea I had as opposed to a question. The whole point of The Initiative is to have 50 states and 50 teams. We know a couple of them: Mighty Avengers in NY, Liberteens in Philly(my town), Tbolts in Colorado and the Order in LA, which went the way of the dodo unfortunately. Are there any plans on learning of more teams? Now my idea is this: write and publish a book for all 50 states but only publish it in its general region(so PA would get like NY, MD, WV, DE, OH & VA) and use local artists and writers to do it. I think that would be cool and add sort of a 4th dimemsion feel to those books. Oh and 4 words: Cloud 9 solo book.

7.
Any chance of EVER finishing the Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk mini?

Listen to this man, Joe! I would love a Cloud 9 solo book. If you played your cards right, she could grow and devlop into THE female character in the future. Especially since, lets be real, the current Marvel Heroes HAVE to retire some day, and others will need to take their place. I think Marvel is doing really well with adding new young characters destiend to take over, but it will be a while before they absolutely do. Let Cloud 9 start early, make her the Wonder Woman we need. Most other females won't work so well, because they are female derivatives of pre-existing male characters (Ms. Marvel, She Hulk, SpiderWoman), whereas Cloud 9 is completely original.

Joe-
I absolutely LOVE your response to the Greg Land controversy!
I recently read that you said it's doubtful that Kevin Smith will ever finish writing "Daredevil:The Target", THAT SUCK's!
I have really lost a lot of Respect for MR.
Smith over the years!
Anywho, I also read some time ago that K.S. said "I should have let Bendis write it.
"(Yes, he should of!)
Is there any chance of the story being finished by another writer? It seems like the only fair and respectful thing to do for the Fans.

thank you,
you Rock!

Hey Joe,
First allow me to say that I wholeheartedly agree with you about Greg Land. He is truly one of my personally favorite artists of all time... and it's quite a shame to hear fans believe he plagarizes when the case is simple.. Inspiration begets ..style...
If the artists and writers didn't take from each other there would be no evolution in the industry and that makes for bad business. Thats like saying new creators shouldn't attempt to pay homage to Lee/Kirby, or greats like Roy Thomas were just copying Stan all throughout the 70's.... or people like Joe Quesada plagarized Steve Ditko and deserves no credit. Greg Land is phenomenal and deserves as much respect as all the other creators in the industry that entertain us with their amazing work. PHEONIX ENDSONG. Where were all the detractors when that book was selling out repeatedly and you couldn't even get 2nd prints? Thats like saying Arthur suydam is plagarizing with his Marvel Zombies covers.... Anyway on to the Questions....
1) With all of this Secret Invasion craziness going on I see a post apocalyptic outcome as the only possibility. I have since 2001 been watching the Avengers evolution into what they have always been billed as: Earths Mightiest Heroes. With that said I wonder how deeply effected their status quo will be once the dust settles, and will their even be Avengers at the end? Please say yes...
2) Is it in the works for a Sentry ongoing? He's quite a compelling character, and I could definately see a collaboration between Bendis and Jenkins making this the standout book of the next decade, following Ms. Marvel and the amazing Captain America series. I would without a doubt LOVE it if JR JR could draw it, but even more so Frank Cho....
3) Brubaker is truly equal to Bendis in ability, and I would love to see them work together on Cap's angle in S.I. Any chance Bucky will be in S.I., and PLEASE tell me there are long term plans for him as Captain America. I don't want to see the Cap death angle ruined, even though it'd be ok if Steve Rogers was alive, maybe just pass the torch to Bucky and have him Replace Tony Stark as director of shield.... Maybe have fury pass his torch to Steve
4) Thank you for Brand new day. I love it. Can we keep Spidey normal for a few years please? J.M.S. ruled, but the brain trust are like loving mothers nursing a truly great character....
5) And Finally: was the ultimate U a dreaming mechanism used by the skrulls on the heroes of the regular marvel u to keep them at bay during captivity whilste they invade? I always thought the ultimate u was a larger sub-section or mega arc of some kind, because it was never tied to the regular marvel u..... am I anywhere near the mark on this one?
Thanks for your time!! Keep me Marveled chief!!!

Just heard you announce Marvel Zombies 3 for September. Why isn't Robert Kirkman on the project? It seems a bit strange him being on the first two and not the last one.

Hey joe youve probably answered this before but I wasn't paying attention.... Marvel .com useto be able to read all back issues that were posted for free. Why start charging people now if your giving them basicaly the same thing you were giving them for free before? I could understand if you were posting the new stuff as it comes out every wed that way if I wasnt sure about something coming out I could read it on digital comics and start buying it the very next month.

oh and tell Loeb I want an ultimate teen wolf in the next installment of ultimates or at least a commando reference

Hey, Joe!

Are there any plans for a MARVEL ZOMBIES OMNIBUS or a NEW MUTANTS/NEW X-MEN (not Morrison, but the Academy X kids) OMNIBUS...? And, if there's not ... could there be? The NEW X-MEN trades are getting harder and harder to find at a reasonable price, and I'd love to finally see the last few issues of NEW MUTANTS collected.

Thanks!

Hi Joe,

Love Marvel, think you have done a fantastic job.

Just wondering though...why no more Marvel Zombies merchandise? I understand you worrying about the image of the heroes to kids...but personally I loved monsters as a kid,
Plus, can't you just market the merchandising to adults via website exclusives and stores catering to adults? It just sucks to think that loyal adult consumers who love the zombie titles cant get any cool zombie merchandise any more...I wanted my zombie wolverine :(

does that also mean no future marvel zombie comics? And I read in empire (I think) a marvel zombies animated feature was in the works...was that true, and if it was, does that now mean it won't happen? I think it would suceed if you only marketed it to an older audience since there's obviously an appetite (so to speak) for it.

Wolverine vs Hulk : I know you must get bored of this but...do you have a release time frame for ultimate wolvie vs hulk? Or at the very least , could you tell me if wolverine gets his revenge for being ripped in two? (Yes wolvie fanboy, and I hated world war hulk, guess why lol). Any plans for any future hulk/wolvie rumbles, and if so, could you try and make sure wolverine isn't treated like such a noob since he has taken it to hulk before and almost killed him? I felt the x men/wwh crossover made all the x men look like weak amatures and is why I am hesitant to go back to reading 616 x men titles, as it's hard for me to take them seriously as they seemed to forget how to fight as a team when against the hulk, not to mention getting taken out way too easily, especially considering, as mentioned, wolverine on his own has bested the hulk.

Will there ever be another Marvel 3D fighting videogame?

Thanks for listening Joe

Jamie

Hiya Joe. A lot of exciting announcements from Marvel recently that have me on the edge of my seat and with a few questions on my mind.

1) Great to see Chris Gage and Sean Chen return to the Iron Man title with the SI Director of SHIELD tie-ins later this year, but do the Knaufs plan on coming back to the title, or more importantly, will there still be an Iron Man as the DOS?
2) I heard from Brian Bendis himself that he has an upcoming project with the great John Romita Jr.
Care to shed some light?
3) I know it's too soon for a "One More Day" What If... story, but any other What If... projects for other events like Messiah CompleX for the end of the year?

...you're still here?

For the past couple of years, Bendis, that magnificent bastard, has talked of a Spider-Woman solo series.
With the recent revelation regarding her, was all of that just a red herring, or will there indeed be some sort of Spider-Woman solo in the future?

Mr. Q, miss you at Newsarama, but glad you still are putting out this column. Thanks for taking the time.

I'm usually an art guy but do like a few writers too (comics need both!).
Any chance one of my favorite writers, Christos Gage will get an exclusive?

Oh yeah about art... Though I haven't seen much of his work, during the Heroes for Hire run, I though Clay Mann did a decent job and had potential.
Will he be doing any further work for Marvel?

Also, any chance that the Hulk manga (I believe Kazuo Koike was involved) could get printed for the USA?

Thanks again for your column.

Loved your reply to the Greg Land basher, Joe. People need to be kinder and realize that these creators are real people with feellings who need to earn a living too.

I have a couple of questions for you:

1. I'm a Mar-Vell fan from wayyyy back. I really need to know if we'll ever see the original Mar-Vell again, or is Mar-Vell version 2.
0 going to be it, and the original will stay dead?

2.
Which ever Mar-Vell comes back for good, are there any plans for any ongoings or minis for him, or will he be appearing in any other books after Secret Invasion?

Hey, Joe, whaddaya know?

Got some questions for ya.
Please do be so kind
as to entreat me to the picking of your brain.

1a.
) Do you feel that the eternal quest for ongoing monthly sales
is the direct cause of the 'introducing the next big thing/
marriage of/ world-altering/ death of/ things will never again
be the same-' trend, or should we be taking in to account
every writer's desire to make their mark in comic history?

1b.
) Do you feel that such a trend draws from the ATTENTION of,
1c.
) and, thus, ARTISTIC MERIT,
1d.
) and, perhaps, even SALES of the comics featuring events
which truly were preplanned years in advance and were
truly meant to greatly overshadow the decade in comics,
rather than just be another story which, though, to some
degree successful, tried to trump the month prior, especially
when factoring in those individuals such as myself that only
purchase a comic book several times a year, and truly do
wish to keep an eye on, say, the three biggest comic
events of the year, without going broke in the process?

1e.
) How do we, as fans, tell the difference between shining
mediocrity and years of planning, when we have to suffer
the same hype each and every month? Is there a rule of
thumb? Some certain keyphrase we should be watching
for that isn't shouted at us on the cover of every comic??

2.
) Do you feel that crossovers for the mere sake of continuity
and the sales of a single issue can, at times, betray the
artistic integrity of characters and their own respective,
perceived world (within their series), such as with mature
and/ or dark characters in their own dark worlds becoming
a sort of joke when seen opposite the bright and chipper
character popular with fans of one type, or in a bright and
chipper world that may feel very foreign to the fans of the
very specific, dark, gritty serial, forever influencing their
view of that favored line, possibly ruining that character
forever in their eyes?

That's all for today.
Thank you in advance for taking the time
out to answer a few questions that I've always wondered
about. Until next time.

Joe. Great that you take the time to answer all these questions.
Thanks you for that!
Now onto my own question.

At WWPhilly a third Marvel Zombies miniseries was announced and I just freaked.

I know it is not high-literature but it is indeed damn entertaining.

I did feel something amiss though.

There was no announcement of Suydam doing the (variant) covers :(
It is off the utmost shame if he will not be joining in on that Zombie-funfest again, since his covers have helped determine the succes of the first series so very very much...or at least it was one of the factors that made it stand out. Truly stand out, beyond a gimmick-kinda excercise.

So my question is this: is Suydam doing covers or not?
