MyCup o' Joe
WEEK 23

SEPT 05, 2008

MyCup o' Joe is usually the weekly communiqué from Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada to the legion of Mighty Marvelites Assembled! Joe sends this shortened communiqué this week:

"It's been a whir of activity at Mighty Marvel, what with the senses-shattering San Diego con, followed immediately by some kickass Marvel creative summits featuring many of our top writers. I'm swimming in a rising sea of deadlines, and gotta take a quick break to catch up, but will leave you to the tender mercies of C.B. Cebulski, one of our ace Marvelites!

"C.B. has been a writer, editor, and talent liaison at Marvel, and even writes some great non-Marvel stuff over at Image Comics as well, so he knows the business from every angle. He's writing a mega- X-Men event for us as well, and after punching the marketing folks in the kidneys, I finally got them to agree to ANNOUNCE the artist in this very column, and show you first peek at the art. So it's likely an even BETTER week without me here!

"Enjoy! And I swear on the soul of Irving Forbush—or at least Squirrel Girl—I'll be back next week!"

And so it comes to pass that this week, Marvel jack-of-all-trades C.B. Cebulski sits down with journalist Jim McLauchlin to answer questions on the pressing issues of the day at Marvel and throughout comics.

And you get to chip in as well! A few reader questions are answered by Joe Quesada this week, with more to come next week! To get in on the fun, post your questions at the bottom of this page!

JM: So…I can't even keep track of you, and I have the proverbial scorecard. What's your function these days? You're actually working at the Marvel offices 2-3 days a week right now, correct?

CB: Sometimes even I don't honestly know what I'm doing on a day-today basis, Jim! But yes, currently I go into the Marvel offices on Tuesdays and Thursdays to attend all sorts of various meetings, from editorial to talent to marketing to international publishing. I keep my irons in all kinds of Marvel fires and need to be up on all the happenings in any number of offices across Marvel's Publishing division. Getting out of bed early and getting my ass up there twice a week is the best way to do that. And my wife is happy to have her freedom on those days.

JM: You seem to be a rambling man. You keep pinballing back-and-forth between being a writer, an editor, a consultant, whatever. What makes you happy? Or is it one of those things that changes week to week?

CB: Rambling man, eh? I like that. Someone else recently called me the Michael Clayton of Marvel, which I couldn't dispute either.

Ultimately, it's simply working in comics that makes me happy. I know that sounds cliché, but it's the absolute truth. I get up and WANT to go to work! I was once well on my way to joining the family business and becoming an electrician, but my dad knew I wasn't happy and pushed me to go out and do something I wanted to be doing. So I went to college, working in a comic shop all four years to help pay for it, and took classes with the ultimate goal of getting into the comic biz, which I eventually did through a convoluted Japan/manga route. So I usually wake up with a smile on my face knowing my workday will somehow involve Spider-Man, the X-Men or the Fantastic Four, and not crawling into a hot attic to rip up insulation to wire a ceiling fan.

These days, I mostly divide my time between writing and working in Talent Management. I love telling stories and could do that for the rest of my life if given the opportunities. But I have so many friends in this business and I enjoy helping them out, guiding their careers and getting them what they want out of comics and Marvel as well. I guess that comes from me wanting to help people the same way my dad helped me put me on my path in life.

JM: How do you manage to fold in so many disparate things in a given day? And what's your sleep cycle like?

CB: I'm a big believer in sleep, actually. I prefer eight hours a day but normally get six or less on weekdays. I tend to stay up late in order to deal with international business, a lot of that in Japan, which means I get to bed around 3 or 4 AM usually depending on the day. I'm usually up around 9 or 10 AM. I check my e-mail, and from that point on, it's all a balancing act depending on what I find in my inbox. I read all my messages across three accounts, try and determine who needs what first and fastest, make a list by priority, take a shower and try to plan my day to make it all happen, then sit down and start working my through the to-do list. I take a few breaks in between to eat and twitter and surf the web and such, but the day is usually a flurry of e-mails, phone calls, script revisions, talent brainstorming and hundreds of other things. My wife and I eat and watch some TV around 9 PM, and it's after dinner when the phone stops ringing and e-mails slow down that I buckle down and write comics. It's so much easier for me to write at night when it's quiet and I'm not distracted by other comic biz concerns. I try to write at least five pages a day, then it's off to bed.

JM: How's it work with Marvel vis-à-vis the work you do at Image? Anyone give you crap? People yell "Benedict Arnold" when you walk down the hall?

CB: Not at all. My Image deal was in place and my books were coming out from them before I went back over to Marvel exclusively. You see, I was working at Marvel full-time as an editor and talent manager until 2005, when I quit to pursue my writing career. And even though I left staff, the folks at Marvel really remained my extended family. And as family tends to do, they supported me in all my endeavors, one of which was pursuing creator-owned books at Image. They were proud as hell of me when titles such as Drain and Wonderlost started coming out. So when I came back in a more formal and internal position last year, it was always with the understanding that my Image books, current titles and books in development, would stay at Image. There was never any question about it. I honestly don't think it even came up. And while I do focus a little more on my Marvel work these days, the editors up there still inquire about my creator-owned work. There's a great balance I've been able to achieve, and I constantly thank Marvel and Image for their mutual understanding of my situation.

Truth be told, Marvel doesn't discourage any of their talent from doing creator-owned work. They understand the need to be creative and scratch that itch of writing and/or drawing characters of their own creation. But as Icon is not really an option for many Marvel creators, Marvel tries to work with the writers and artists who want to do creator-owned work, either through Image or in Europe, to find a happy medium where they can do their Marvel books and get a steady paycheck while also pursuing their creator-owned endeavors, really giving them the best of both worlds.

JM: Okay, in a practical concern, "X-Infernus" hits in December. What's the super-small nutshell on that?

CB: In a super-small nutshell? Like pistachio sized? Magic and Magik come back to the Marvel Universe in a big way! But if you wanna move up to hazelnut size, as I've explained in a few other places, X-Infernus actually started life as an Uncanny X-Men Annual that David Finch and I were planning on doing, featuring the return of Illyana "Magik" Rasputin, a character we both have loved since childhood, into the Marvel Universe proper. But when David got tagged for Ultimatum with Jeph Loeb, he couldn't say no to a project of that size and scope, so our Annual got put back on the shelf. But given certain events that were happening in the current X-Universe, editor Nick Lowe resurrected the project as he thought the time was right for it. Much to my surprise, he and Marvel Sales guru David Gabriel liked the overall concept so much they felt we were doing it an injustice by limiting it to an Annual, so they came up with the idea to turn it into a four issue mini-series. We got Finch's blessing to proceed without him on pencils and to approach other artists, as long as he was still able to do the covers, which he is!

Craig Kyle, Chris Yost and Skottie Young took the first step and brought the Darkchild back to life in Limbo in their brilliant run in New X-Men: Quest for Magik. I built off what they did and took the next step in my Illyana story in X-Men: Divided We Stand, which just came out in trade paperback last week. This story, X-Infernus, is what it has all been building towards and it comes to a head with repercussions for all the X-Men!

JM: Didn't you get the memo? Nostalgia for the '80s is already over! We're into nostalgia for the '90s, as scary a concept as that might be.

CB: Are you kidding? You're talking to the guy who helped relaunch What If? , regularly fights to bring back Cloak and Dagger, Darkhawk, Slingers and Power Pack, and writes an autobiographical comic about his high school love life. In my mind, the '80s never ended!

JM: Well, all that said, you have an artist to introduce…

CB: Yes, we do! I'm happy to announce that the artist for X-Infernus will be the always amazing Giuseppe "Cammo" Camuncoli! Take a bow, Cammo…

JM: Groovy. And of course, we'll have the first art to show, right?

CB: Cammo's art is just gonna blow people away on this series. Check it out!

JM: Now you're also a "friend to the common man," right? You're helping a number of new artists get a foot in the door via "ChesterQuest." Who, what, or why is a ChesterQuest?

CB: ChesterQuest was the international talent search I recently did for Marvel. It was named ChesterQuest as the 'C' in C.B. stands for Chester and it just so happens most of the Marvel folks refer to me by my real name.

I had this wacky idea to travel around the world and do portfolio reviews in as many countries as I could to find the best and brightest new comic book artists working on the international scene. I was gonna go out there and attempt to do it on my own, but Marvel got behind the idea and helped me finance the endeavor. We decided we were going to set a goal for ourselves and determined we'd hire 12 pencilers and four cover artists when all was said and done. We'd guarantee work to these 16 finalists. I'm happy to report that we've more than met our goal, with at last count, 32 people have now come through the Marvel doors thanks for ChesterQuest. Not all are published yet, with the ChesterQuest anthology Marvel Comics Breakout still on the horizon early next year, but you're already seeing a lot of these new talents pop up in Marvel comics.

JM: So there's a few ChesterQuest alums hitting on Marvel books right now?

CB: Yup! David Lafuente, who I met at the Dublin City Comic Con (but who is from Spain but now living in London), is illustrating Hellcat and the Ultimate Spider-Man Annual. Folks have probably already seen Marco Turini's pencil and ink work on Squadron Supreme. Vincenzo Cucca art graces She-Hulk, with his fellow Italian Marco Castiello penciling Secret Invasion Front Line, both of them inked and colored by the amazing artists that compromise G.G. Studio. And these guys are just the tip of the iceberg!

JM: That seems like a lot of guys from outside the U.S. How's it work out that way?

CB: Just the luck of the draw. Turns out a good number of the final ChesterQuesters happen to be Italian artists. I met a lot of these artists at the incredible convention they have up in Mantova, Italy, but a good number also submitted to me via e-mail and snail mail. But there's a great international mix of people we've hired from all over the world, including a few ringers from right here in the States who will be debuting soon.

And given the success of my first "tour", I'll also be making a few quick jaunts to Europe again this fall to try and find even more new artists. I'll be at the Comic Festival in Aviles, Spain from September 9th-14th, at the Thought Bubble convention in Leeds, England on November 14th and 15th, and then I'm heading back over to the Dublin City Comic Con again from November 22nd – 23rd. I'll be doing as many portfolios as possible every day at each show.

JM: Now, you've also written Loners, which is…I dunno what to call it. An almost-cult sensation? Some guys wanna play arena shows, and some are content to be the coolest bar band in the world. This seems more bar band. Are you happy with the reception it's received.

CB: Very happy! Loners is a series and a group of characters very near and dear to my heart. Everything I chose to pitch and write at Marvel comes from my love of the characters. And it just so happens that the characters I love and gravitate towards aren't Marvel's big guns. As I mentioned earlier, I'm more of a fan of the Marvel B-listers, like Cloak and Dagger, Power Pack, the New Mutants, the New Warriors. Sure, I love Spidey and the FF and the Hulk, but I don't think I could write those A-listers very well. I feel more of a connection with the smaller characters, the ones I was able to better associate with when I was growing up, and it's those characters I feel most comfortable with. I realize they may not be the best sellers, but getting a book like Loners onto the stands and into the hands of fans means the world to me. I'll always be happier in bars than in arenas. (Unless it's my beloved X-Men. Then I'll settle for a stadium gig, like X-Infernus!)

JM: Your perspective is perhaps unique—you've got one foot firmly planted in Marvel, one out. That said, just as a reader, what's your favorite Marvel book these days?

CB: Answering this question could get me in trouble with a lot of editors, writers and artists, but I'll have to say my favorite Marvel book right now is Ultimate Spider-Man. It was one of the first books I worked on when I joined Marvel, and Bendis continues to impress to this day. I'm a sucker for teen drama and Brian brings it in spades, doing such original things with these characters in ways we've never seen before. And Stuart Immonen is an absolute master of movement and fluidity in the comic book medium. USM is an almost perfect read month after month. Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man, Ed Brubaker's Captain America and Daredevil, and also Runaways are all continually amazing as well!

JM: How 'bout outside Marvel? What are you reading and digging on?

CB: Where do I start? Fables, Green Lantern, Invincible, Usagi Yojimbo, B.P.R.D., Bleach, Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Black Summer…there are so many great comics out there right now! And I can't wait for more Scott Pilgrim!!

JM: Last question, I think: You're a good talent scout, and you've always got your eye out for that next ground-level guy who's gonna blow up. Who is that person now?

CB: Trying to get me to reveal some of my secrets are you? Well, I'll indulge you. One guy who people have already seen tearing it up over at Top Cow is Kenneth Rocafort. His work is simply stunning and he's gonna be star soon. Two women who people might not yet know but will soon are Alina Urusov and Sara Pichelli. Both are amazing illustrators with unique styles who I see making big impressions in the coming year. And if and when my next Image comic Shiki comes out, artist Joao Lemos' style will have an undeniable and lasting impact on comic artists here, in my opinion.

JM: Thanks, man. You're out. We have a few reader questions for Slacker Quesada, who will be back in full voice next week.

CB: I think I hear that voice already. I have deadlines to hit, man. Thanks!

Hey Joe,

1) Thanks to "Brand New Day," I'm saving $9 a month on Spider-Man books. I used to buy every single issue that had Spider-Man in it, but seeing as how Peter's become so unlikable and unrelatable ever since BND started, I no longer want any issue with that version of Spider-Man in my house. I just read it through in the shop. Which is saving me a lot of money. Thanks for that.

2) Ever since I first heard the spoilers about "One More Day" and what it was going to be, about a year ago, I've successfully lost 42 kilos (92.59 pounds), all from being pissed off about the ruination of my favorite character. I'd say that's about the only positive thing I can say about it. So thanks for giving me something to focus my energies on.

And a question: Is the Spider-Man in BND a Skrull, a Dire Wraith, the Chameleon in disguise or some other kind of imposter? It's about the only way I could possibly see the character fitting in. I mean, he doesn't have Peter Parker's personality, he lacks Peter's heart, his soul, his intelligence, his kindness, his selflessness, his heroism. He doesn't know how to make Peter's webbing, seeing as how he's somehow paying 200 times as much for the webbing's ingredients than Peter did. And seriously, the "running out of webbing" gag was tired the first time they did it. By now even the mention of the web shooters is sickening to the extreme.

The Spider-Man in BND also behaves like an incompetent rookie and a totally worthless loser.  And he doesn't even seem to notice that Harry hasn't mentioned his son even once. The lack of noticing that his best friend has turned into a deadbeat dad should be enough to show he isn't really Peter Parker.

JQ: Lore, how are you?

1) Hmmm. I don't really see how Peter is any different than the same ol' Spidey we've always known. Sorry you don't dig it, but I'm glad you're still reading it the store—there must be something you like if you're doing that.

2) 92 pounds since "One More Day" started? That's over 10 pounds a month! Maybe it's not the comic?

And nope, Spidey is none of those things you suggest. Really? He doesn't have Peter's personality of the loveable loser? With respect to the web formula and his being able to afford it, there are a lot of things that people can't afford today that they could merely a year ago. This is the world we live in. Peter had organic web shooters for quite some time before BND, the cost of living goes up. I bet Peter in BND is pretty surprised at what he's paying for gas today as well. As for the Harry question, patience, all will be answered in time.

Regardless, I appreciate you sticking with us and reading Spidey, but for the life of me since you are reading it…I don't understand what you're so upset about?

Posted by Stephen of Troy on Aug 12, 2008 5:24 AM

You're a hell of a mensch for allowing Speedball to return.

Two questions, though: Will he be moving on to a new team, and is there a new costume in his future?

JQ: Stephen, are you sure you want to thank me ahead of time?

Posted by Jason on Aug 12, 2008 5:26 AM

Hi Joe!

1) I'm a fan of the original Infinity Gauntlet series. Is there a chance for a remake?

2) Can we expect X-Men: Evolution season 4 and the '90s Spider-Man cartoon on DVD?

3) Will Havok, Marvel Girl and all the other heroes captured by Vulcan be returning to an X-Man series?

4) Is Astonishing X-Men a part of regular X-Men continuity now?

5) Can we get more Kitty Pryde? She has been M.I.A. since "Endangered Species" in the regular continuity, and of course, Joss Whedon put her in limbo in Giant-Sized Astonishing X-Men. Will she make it back to the X-Men?

Thanks for your time and keep up the AWESOME work! And of course, MAKE MINE MARVEL!

JQ: Jason, thanks for the kind words, some good questions here.

1) Perhaps some day, but no plans currently.

2) As I mentioned earlier, I have nothing to do with the business of our animation division. So beats me.

3) Sooner than you think! Keep an ear to the ground.

4) Repeat after me, ASTONISHING X-MEN WAS ALWAYS A PART OF CONTINUITY! Kitty is gone! Cyclops is bad-ass! Hisako is an X-Woman! It's just like X-Force is a part of X-Men continuity. These events aren't happening all at the exact same time, but they all come together when you take a step back.

5) You're going to have to keep waiting for her to join the Uncanny X-Men. She's still in that bullet flying through space.

Posted by boomvavavoom on Aug 12, 2008 4:43 PM

I totally missed Squadron Supreme vol. 2, and I hate hardcovers! I prefer paperbacks. Any news of a trade paperback collection?

JQ: Boom, why all the hate, bro?

Expect news on a TPB collection next year.

Before I go, I've got a special surprise—a look inside X-Men: Worlds Apart, hitting stores in October!

Hey Joe, long-time Marvel zombie, first time writer here. Hopefully the first time of many. Today I've got a simple request for you. Pardon the length but some explanation is required...

When I first heard about the Venom: Dark Origin limited series I was overjoyed. I'd been dreaming of a series that streamlined and elaborated on Eddie Brock/Venom's continuity for years. And if I may say so, Zeb Wells has done an absolutely tremendous job with that. Heck, he even included Eddie's sister, Mary Brock, who was only mentioned once prior in a one-off cameo appearance in Nova: The Human Rocket volume 3.
Now that's dedication to continuity!

Within the pages of the limited series an artistic error was made and Ann Weying (Brock's ex-wife) was colored as an African-American woman, whereas historically she was portrayed as overtly white. I'm all for diversity in comics, and new interpretations in alternate takes. However, this book was supposed to be about streamlining the mainstream continuity, and with this error that's no longer the case; effectively making the book non-canon and crushing my dream.

So my request is as such: would you kindly correct this coloring snafu in a second printing and/or TPB release of the series? I and many other long-time Venom/Spidey/Marvel fans would be greatly appreciative if you could.
Thank you in advance and continue to make mine Marvel!

Mr.
Quesada,

I am looking forward to X-Infernus, especially since it seems it will feature three of my favorite X-Men: Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Colossus. Mr. Camuncoli's art looks great.

What I and my fellow Bamfers would like to know is: Will this four-issue mini series deal in any way with the ramifications of the Draco arc? I am hoping for a revelation that Azazel is not Kurt's father.
If not in this series, then in a later series perhaps?

Thanks

This is actually something I'd thought of when I first heard of the mini, as well. Last I recall, Kurt had control of the Soulsword and has been popping up on a lot of covers. This is a pretty golden opportunity for them to write out what was a rather poorly received idea regarding Kurt.

Even as one of the few people who really enjoyed most of Austen's run on the X-Books (While some of his execution was flawed, he has some fantastic ideas and used some very underused characters in cool ways), Draco was pretty terribly conceived.

I'm excited about the return of Magic / Majik! I really liked the New X-Men tie in around a year ago. And for the people upset about spiderman bnd, please read it all first before complaining. It had a rough first couple months in my opinion but slowly got better and better, especially J.R. Jr. penciling the NWD series, the writing is fantastic as well.

Where is Doctor Doom at? He is like my favorite and he's off the charts for many months now.

Personally, I'm thrilled about Infernus... even with only character sketches, I think it looks great!

Joe: out of curiosity, while I'm starting to see as the books go on roughly how the X-titles fit together, I also wonder if there will be a point in the near future where you can, spoiler-free, lay it all out officially for us all? I'm particularly hoping to see where exactly in the story X-Force falls, to see if my theory is right, but also want to make sure I know the WHOLE story.
Thanks!

Hey Joe, a couple things have been on my mind.

1.
Can you give out any hints about whether we'll be seeing Thanos again at any point?
2.
After BND, did Aunt May still live with Peter in Stark Tower (when her and Jarvis were getting friendly)? If so, how could anyone on the team NOT deduce Spider-man's identity? Is anyone remotely aware of something big bad magic changing history, or was Mephisto's spell so elaborate that nobody can put the clues together?
3.
Are we going to find out what was going on with Sentry and the dark sentry/void character we saw back in Mighty Avengers a few issues ago?

Thanks!

Hey Joe! Thank you for answering my last questions. It made my day. I have some more questions.

1) Why did Marvel bother adding new depth to the Hulk character just to take it away? I’m talking about Green Scar Hulk of course.

2) Why isn’t Greg Pak writing the new Hulk series? His work on World War Hulk was amazing. I just think it’s kind of dumb that he made the Hulk character so interesting and just left him behind. But at least he’s writing The Incredible Hercules and Skaar the Son of Hulk two good books that spun out of World War Hulk.

3) Is the “He” in “He loves You” Kly'bn?
4) Will the Young Avengers be affected by Secret Invasion?
5) How is Menace different from the other Goblins Spidey has fought in the past?
6) I enjoy the concept of Jackpot. Spidey needs a registered hero to fight and maybe occasionally team up with. But what I was wondering why not just use Black Cat? She and Spidey have a history together and it would have made an interesting story.

7) Will The Human Torch ever return to Spidey’s life? I would like to know there status as friends ever since Civil War.

Hey Joe Q.

Firstly I'm a huge fan of almost everything the company is doing I have 13 mailed subscriptions, and I pick up many more every month. Out of all the books I get though X-force is by far my favorite. I really like how dark and gritty this book is and the art is phenomenal. Is there any chance we could see Gambit making an appearence on this team? Aside from his recent appearence in X-Men: Legacy he hasn't been associated with the X-Men. I think he would make an incredible asset considering archangel is the only one with a range attack. Also the tension between gambit and Wolverine would be pretty funny with Logan now being in Scott's shoe's as leader. It might also be fun to tap on to the fact that Gambit probably still has Apocalypse Tech inside him.
Anyway keep up the good work

Hey Joe.

I recently picked up the second printing of Secret Invasion: Who Do you Trust (Don't know how I missed it the first time). In it, there is a short story about Beast and Wonder Man in the Savage Land. It seems one is a Skrull and one is not. Then in Secret Invasion 5, after Reed fires his anti-skrull-cloak-of-deception-laser-thingie, we see a brief glimpse of Wonder Man all green-like.

What's up? Does this mean the 70's Beast is legit and our feline faker is really a phony?

Hey Joe,

love the preview sketches for X-Infernus, looks really good and ill definitely be picking this up when i comes out!

just a quick question though, will the New Xmen be in the mini series?

what with quest for magik being the start of Illyanas return the X-students featured heavily in getting her to where she is now...

besides the New Xmen need an event so they can re-form and get rid of the crappy-ness that is young xmen.

cheers,

Danny.

Thank you for finally bringing back the one true Magik. It was her first appearance in an issue of X-Men Classics that convinced me to buy all of the back issues of New Mutants years ago and sold me on comics. She is truely a great character, torn between the dark magicks she weilds vs her own good soul. No more teases or false returns. Thank You. Next we need to convince someone to start an old school New Mutants book ala the new "Titans" book over at DC. I miss all those characters.

JQ,

DO I see another Mets collapse coming at the hands of my Phillies? On to my comment/question.

I feel that Namor is the most under utilized character in the MU. He is supposedly one of the "power-brokers" being with the Illuminati and all but he always seems to stay away from everything...at least in appearances.

So is Namor actually manipulating everything from behind the scenes? I think he is and here is why: In the Illuminati: Civil War 1 shot he specifies, in detail, what the Hulk is going to do when he comes back to Earth. He fights against Tony and Reed in CW because of Sue and he is protecting Atlantis from Tony. He counts the Black Panther AND Doom among his allies. Kind of weird to have both. He was part of the reason the Skrulls invaded Earth but he has not played a part at all in SI and the Skrulls have never mentioned him as a threat that needs to be taken out and you think he would be with how powerful he is and the fact that he leads an entire army. We know that he fought with Cap and Bucky with the Invaders, and has a lot of respect for both, but yet we still haven't seen him speak up about Cap's death and Bucky replacing him. Finally, Avengers/Invaders is in continunity but Bucky remembers NOTHING about this encounter while Namor does. That strikes me as odd and you can't use the whole Bucky's memory is not what it was do to what he went through; because he now remembers everything from when he was the Winter soldier. All this is leading me to believe that Namor is the leader of the "Evil-Illuminati" we keep hearing about.
So can you give some info ot does everything need to remain quiet because there is a reason for everything I mentioned?

Loved the 1st issue of his mini.
Is Mutant Zero is Kitty? Are the Thunderbolts also considered Colorado's Initiative Team? Can we PLEASE get a Cloud 9 book?

As always, or until Loeb writes either Ultimate Spider-Man, Daredevil or Captain America(the main series not White) MAKE MINE MARVEL!

1. What's the deal with so many villians being reintroduced as females lately? Loki was a great twist inspired on mythology that acutally makes a lot of sense (after all, what's more mischievous than a woman?), but with the likes of Kraven the Huntress, Miss Sinister and Lady Bullseye coming out of the woodwork, it's starting to feel like a recycled and rather forced idea.

2.
Any chance we might get a reprint of the Alias Omnibus?

3.
While we're at it, when will we get to see where has Jessica Jones been during Secret Invasion?

4.
Any update on that Allan Heinberg project?

Q&A submissions time?

1.
CB Cebulski is featured in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance as one possible answer to one of the Vision's trivia questions (I think it was in regard to being a hacker that Weasel could trust?) and I THOUGHT I recognized the name anyway, so whats the low-down on CB's existence within the Marvel Universe??

2. I haven't picked up much of BND, but don't worry, its only because my son was born in December and for some reason I keep being told that diapers and formula are more important than comics. *sigh* Like so many others I had my concerns about making Spidey continuity all X-men-ish, but as I've been a follower of Mr. Parker since before I could read (heck, i started reading via flipping through dusty ole 60s and 70s issues) I say BRA-FRICKING-VO to the Braintrust. What I've read, and what I've picked up on via Internet, I am very happy with the characters, the mood, and the general direction of the book; it IS what Spidey should be.

Now I know this is long and won't be used, but I want to type it out anyway. One of my favorite aspects of Spider-Man had always been that he grows and time moves forward. He got out of high school, college came and went, he was married, I cheered when he knocked up MJ, I puked when they brought back Norman... I digress. Part of that growing was that Peter was always striving to become one of the "real" heroes like Cap or the FF, but he never saw himself as one of those guys.

I feel that JMS' run on Spidey gave us that. It was a look at what Spidey's life would be like as one of the elite. Even if it was in the midst of all kinds of big events, we saw Spidey at the top amongst his own heroes. But we weren't going to get the Spider-man stories we love that way.

So while I always enjoyed marriage-ridden Spider-man, I appreciate getting back to what makes him great.
So please, continue to let the flack roll off your back and keep making mine Marvel!

It still freaks me out when people recognize me from that brief mention in the game! I was a story consultant/co-writer on MUA and the producers named the hacker after me as an "easter egg" while they were recording the voices. As far as I know, it's my only appearance in Marvel continuity, although there was another Cebulski character in Dave Mack's run on DD.

Take care,

Hey, Joe, long time Marvel reader here. Any word on when the Jeph Loeb and J. Scott Campbell Spider-Man maxi-series is going to come out, or has that been cancelled? I am a HUGE Campbell fan, and have been looking for some interior pages goodness from him since his Wildsiderz series went MIA.

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does Marvel have kind of a mentoring/teaching program like Marc Silvestri does over at Top Cow? If so, how would an aspiring artist, such as myself, submit material to perhaps become part of that program?

Hello Joe, hope all is well. We missed you at Wizard World Chicago. A couple of questions.
Hope you catch the hidden theme:

1. At WWC Marvel announced the upcoming "What Ifs." In "What if the Runaways became the Young Avengers?, it was mentioned that we will be seeing the returning Victorious (Victor Mancha’s future alter-ego)in the Kang role.
Any chance of bringing him to the 616 mainstream?

2. Does Marvel have any further plans to use the new White Tiger following her mini? If not, is it possible that we could see the original comeback? I tried to jump aboard with the new version, but she just didn’t click for me. IMO the original, Hector Ayala, should not have been killed off in the first place.

3. Will we ever learn what happened to Cecilia Reyes of the X-Men? Isn’t her disappearance the reason for her brother Col. Miguel Reyes joining the O.N.E.
? Shouldn’t he be getting more page-time?

4. Will we see the Texas Rangers re-appearing in The Initiative again? And please settle on where Armadillo stands. Villian or Hero? It seems to switch with every appearance he makes(Skrull?). I vote hero.

Many thanks.

Hey Joe,

Thanks for answering my questions last time.
Here's some more:

1)Dr. Strange has been out of commission for the few months due to having his hands crushed by the Hulk. Why doesn't he just go see Elixir to fix his hands. The dude built David a new heart. Surely some crushed hands shouldn't be to much of a problem for Josh. The guy is golden in my book (no pun intended). It sure would be nice to have to Sorcerer Supreme handy (pun intended) when Illiyana Rasputin brings hell to earth.

2)After M-day there were 198 mutants. Since then Sabertooth, Puck, Banshee, Wolfcub, Quill, Icarus, Mr. M, Mystique, Mammomax, Jazz, Caliban, Peepers, Prism, and Wallflower have all died. I know there are more but I'm having a heard time keeping up.
With the addition of 1 baby to the mutant ranks, what does that bring the grand total of mutants to? Are you guys going to do anything to re power these mutants?
3)With “Brand New Day”, did that null and void the secondary mutations from “The Other”? I thought the retractable stingers were fantastic.

4)David Aleyene is such a great character. The last run on New X-Men really opened him up when they lifted his psychic blocks. Ever since “Messiah Complex” noone has used him.
Any chance of seeing him soon?
5)Who is Mutant Zero? They started using her in the early issues of “Avengers: The Initiative” and she has since dropped off the map. It was set up for a big reveal, and then nothing.

6)Since there are so many heres from/based in New York, which ones are Met fans and which ones are Yankee fans? Also, since Steve Rogers is from Brooklyn in the 1930's, is he a Yankee, Dodger, Giant, or Met fan?

Keep up the great work Joe,
Patrick

1) Regarding BND, I've read a few arcs here and there, however, nothing has really grabbed me, as the stories have been very ho-hum, mostly the art has gotten me. I've also simply felt none of these stories have really benefited not having MJ around, so yeah, OMD was a waste of a story-arc and we're told, just move on...except New Ways to Die shows that Peter remembers wiping everyone's mind.
So, what's the full scoop on this? What does he remember?

2).
When is Mike Carey going to get an Avengers book to write?

Hey Joe, more quick fire questions from me.

1.
Forgive me for being morbid to poor Spidey, but when is the guy going to really suffer for the bad choice he made in OMD? Specifically, when is Aunt May going to learn of his 'deal with the devil' and hopefully tell him what a selfish irresponsible person he was?

2. With all the various 'First Class' comics appearing for the different eras of the X-Men, could we perhaps have a similar ongoing or mini-series for their bitter rivals the Brotherhood? I'm very fond of all the classic members like Magneto, Mystique, Toad, Pyro and the Blob and would love to see their early evil deeds from their own eyes, perhaps called 'Brotherhood: First Order', I quite like that title.

3. My county’s Robin Hood (magically transported from Ye Old Merry England) vs Clint Hawkeye vs Kate Hawkeye in an Archery competition.
Who wins?

Thanks for listening again, I'm loving things at Marvel right now (Well except BND, but no one's perfect).

Hey there,
In the recent issues of Ultimate Spidey, Brock says that the Venom symbiote hungers for Peter from when they were bonded. But in th Ultimate universe the 'Venom' symbiote was never bonded to Peter because the two suits are DNA specified and Peter burnt all remains of the 'Parker Symbiote' whilst Eddie only wears the 'Brock Symbiote'.
Am I mistaken somewhere, what's going on?

Hey Joe,

1) I picked up 'Dead of Night featuring Devil-Slayer' and really liked the first issue. But are there any plans to expand the MAX line with more ongoing series? Terror Inc, Son of Satan, and Foolkiller have all been great.
Has it been considered to give those characters unlimited MAX series?

2) Will X-infernus be contained only in the mini, or will there be tie-in issues from other titles? Either way, I'm looking forward to it.

3) Will we see more of Iceman in Uncanny or Astonishing after his story in 'Manifest Destiny'? I'd hate to see him put on the back burner (especially since he's made of ice) after having him really step up to the plate in Mike Carey's X'men

Two quick and easy questions for ya!

1) The Marvel. com Forums are a place where (I'd like to believe) the dedicated fans go to share their love for marvel.
Do you guys ever scout the fan fiction section for ideas and/or future talent?

2) When Bullseye joined the Thunderbolts, one of the first things he asked was "When can I kill Daredevil?" Well, Norman is currently getting his wish with Spidey...Will Bullseye ever get his by having the Thunderbolts go after Daredevil?

Thanks in advance!

Joe, great stuff. I'm really loving Marvel right now and especially Secret Invasion.

My question isn't related to Secret Invasion, per se.

1. I became a real fan of Hulk during World War Hulk, both off planet and once he came back. One thing that I had started to enjoy was his intellectual level and how he seemed to be talking more human as a warrior. I also really dug how in his interactions with Amadeus Cho and how he had put together that somehow Banner's intellect was intact during Hulk's battles and somehow subconsciously preventing any lasting harm coming from the Hulk to any others. In a recent issue it seemed like he's reverted back to his (hate to say it) dumb self in his caveman talk.

Just curious if there were conscious decisions about this or is there more to come that might bring light to this?

2. Also, for whatever reason I just recently had a flashback on a character that I might have had one issue of as a kid: Rom the Spaceknight.

Any chance some reference of him in general or anything showing up somewhere in some of the "Galaxy" stuff going on soon? Anything?

3. Lastly, speaking of "Galaxy", I noticed that Bug is in there and he's full-size.

I seem to remember him being among my favorite characters from Micronauts in the 80's, and was wondering a) is there going to be any interaction with the rest of the Micronauts, and b) especially my favorite: Acroyear (sp?)???

Thanks and keep up the awesome work!

Hey Joe! First off, Marvel Apes, AWESOME! Really great read. Second, a couple of questions.

1.
Will we ever find out if Wolverine's real dad is the "Groundskeeper Logan", or John Howlett? (It was hinted but never addressed, plus with Daken in the picture it would be cool to have that Father, Son thingy brought up)

2.
Will we ever see or hear from "Dog" Logan again? (I mean, this guys possibly out there somewhere, and Romulus guy could use him against Wolvie)

3.
Will Daken and X-23 ever meet? (That would be awesome!!)

Thanks for your time, I'm lookin forward to all the great comics coming soon from you guys! Make Mine Marvel!

Dear Joe,

Where is Happy Hogan? He's great in the comics and was great in the Iron Man movie. Last seen, he was wounded, nearly dead. Make it so he was only wounded and seen again in Invincible Iron Man! (A book I love) A great character like him shouldn't be killed so needlessly.

Hi Joe,

You've mentioned a few characters on here that I would love to see again.

First of can you confirm if Speedballs return will take place in the current MU?

Also Mike Carey has often stated he has plans for Maggott if X-Men legacy reaches a second year (even with a different name). Can you confirm if that will happen. I know he;s become a bit of a joke but I thought he was one of the more interesting X-Characters in the 90's.

Also where could we expect to see X-Man, and Lifeguard who'se return you have hinted at.

Any chance of seeing Cece Reyes and Blink return anytime soon too.

Alpha Flight. I'm sure you are getting tired of hearing this one. I honestly think it' s time for the return of the originals.

And okay, I know I'm pushing my luck here but can you hint at any new projects for Fred Van Lente, Christos Gage, Jeff Parker and Dan Slott.

I have a question that i'd like to ask.
Will there be any new Ethnic European characters introduced into the Marvel Universe?

Right now I can only think of three, Blade,Outlaw and the new arabian girl in Captain Britain and MI13 (which rules btw, great book).

I know the lack of characters isnt an intentional one but maybe it's something that could be looked at, not for any political correctness but just because it makes for a more realistic world.

Hey Joe,

How long do you think Amazing Spider-Man will stay thrice monthly? At this rate, issue 600 will hit summer of '09. (Hopefully with a big pay off.) If you keep it thrice monthly for the next 11 or 12 years, you can reach 1,000 issues before Action Comics does. Boy would that piss off DC.

Thanks Joe. Hope you stay EIC for the next 12 years.

Hey Joe,

The folks who want Captain America to return to it's original numbering are wrong. Not to get all geeky on you but Captain America isn't approaching issue 600 , it's 500. Remember, Captain America started as Tales of Suspense for 99 issues, then 100 was actually its first issue.

I'm all for it. Do you think you'll return some titles to its original numbering? Captain America and Daredevil will hit 500 next year. Iron Man will hit 500 in 2 years. And as long as we're on the subject, return Wolverine too.

Thanks Joe, keep up the good work.

Dear Joe,

I love the work you posted here this week, it's really top notch! I've been a comic fan since I was a kid, and have always loved to read and draw characters like the Hulk, Spider-Man. My question for you is, while I enjoy drawing in my spare time, my real passion is writing- stories, scripts, etc.
- how can someone like me get into writing for comic books such as Hulk, Avengers and others?

Sincerely,

P.S. If you're interested, here's a link to a (very) short script I wrote not too long ago. See what you think. Thank you.
