MyCup o' Joe
WEEK 26

OCT 02, 2008

MyCup o' Joe is the weekly communiqué from Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada to the legion of Mighty Marvelites Assembled! Every Friday, Joe will sit down with journalist Jim McLauchlin to answer questions on the pressing issues of the day at Marvel and throughout comics.

And you get to chip in as well! Joe will be answering YOUR questions every week! To get in on the fun, post your questions at the bottom of this page!

JM: It looks like you have…

JQ: Hey, before we get in to anything, a double-important preview we have to run. This is the FIRST preview of Secret Invasion 7. Things are whipping to a conclusion, and I'm pretty stoked about the way things have been going in this book, and all the crossover titles.

JM: Groovy. Well, as I was about to say, it looks like you have a hit on your hands with the new Deadpool series. Is this nostalgia for the '90s already?

JQ: I honestly don't think so. I just think the book is hitting on all cylinders and is hitting just the right note for Deadpool fans. If you've ever met Daniel Way, which I know you have, Jim, it's pretty clear to all of us that he IS Deadpool. Thank god he lost his gun license.

He did lose his gun license, didn't he?

JM: Check under his pillow and we'll see.
There's been a couple small temblors in the comics biz in the past two weeks—DC has shut down its Minx imprint, and employees of Virgin Comics have bough VC's assets and turned it into Liquid Comics. What's the reaction to these events at the Marvel offices?

JQ: Well, it's never good to see, but the honest truth is that it wasn't completely unexpected. With respect to Minx, I just don't think it was given the right kind of marketing push. Granted, it's not as easy to market Minx as it is to market superheroes. Minx could have been the greatest comics ever written and it wouldn't have mattered, as I honestly don't feel DC gave it the best chance to succeed. I'm not saying that they needed to spend a lot of money on it, but they could have been creative at least. It just didn't feel to me like they gave it a chance outside of promoting the initial launch.

As for Virgin, what they were trying to do was an uphill battle from the start, and as someone who has been there, it's not easy doing a start-up business in any field—especially comics.

JM: Personally speaking, I know you have to keep some kind of eye on the competition, but how do things like this affect your business? Are there repercussions at Marvel? Or do you just keep your head down in your own work?

JQ: There are cautionary tales any time something like this happens, and always something to learn. Arguably, there is less for us to learn from what happened to Virgin when compared to Minx—we're not a start-up, but we might launch new lines.

JM: One question we constantly see in the reader qs is "Will Marvel collect Insert-Title-Here in paperback?" Now it's really not your department, but do you ever feel a want, need or desire to make it your department?

JQ: Nope. Between the monthly titles and Marvel West stuff, I wouldn't have the time to worry about it, even if I wanted to make it my department. Plus, I would just gum up the works. We have some really brilliant and talented people in our Collected Editions department, and that's why it's been so amazingly successful. They don't need any input from me at all.

JM: 'Cause, y'know, I would love to see those old Joe Casey-Jose Ladronn Cable issues collected. Really.

JQ: Not my department, man. Call Collected Editions.

JM: Shifting over to your December solicitations, which just went up recently, you have a lot hinging on Secret Invasion 8, the finale to that series. And, I guess…a whole new set of solicitations on eight books as soon as Secret Invasion 8 hits?

JQ: Well, we try not to put all our eggs in one basket but there's no denying that we hung our hat on SI as our big event for this year, and it's been a success.

JM: Logistically speaking, how easy/difficult is this? Having to solicit these books at a later date? Is this something that makes your sales and marketing guys tear their hair out? Or is it a relatively easy trick to pull off?

JQ: Tearing their hair out isn't really the right way to describe it. They would be tearing their hair out if we gave them nothing to work with, and they were left trying to create marketing for something that was akin to the Emperor's new clothes, but that's not the case here. There's been some great stuff happening in SI and it's brought out the best in the marketing folks and in us in Publishing. So while it is a lot of hard work, it isn't work that's filled with frustration. Rather the opposite, it's wildly creative late nights.
And one trick we want to pull off right now is a preview of some new Thunderbolts art. This is definitely SI and post-SI, "Dark Reign"-related.

JM: Coming from a newspaper background, there's an almost constant advertising v. editorial conflict, usually resolved by the publisher. Is there any internal strife at Marvel regarding stuff like this, having to solicit and re-solicit some December books? And what "side" of the company drives something like that?

JQ: When it comes to Marketing vs. Publishing, rarely are there any creative conflicts, but scheduling can sometimes be a source of tension. If a book drops out, you need to do your best to make up for that lost revenue, not necessarily in that month, but you try to make it up in the same quarter. Where it becomes really problematic is when you lose it out of an entire year. That's something that we try desperately to avoid.

JM: Some are of the opinion that soliciting books 2-3-4 months in advance is an inherent logistical problem in and of itself. The classic example usually being, "Nobody knew about 'The Death of Gwen Stacy' until it happened." Do you carry an opinion one way or another?

JQ: The system is what it is, and it needs to be this way for the direct market to work properly. Believe me, if there was a better way we would be on it ASAP.

JM: Y'know, I ask you a lot of freakin' questions. Anything you wanna talk about?

JQ: Yeah, have you seen that American Express commercial where they dis us comic fans? A guy is having a business lunch and everything seems to be going well until he puts down his credit card that has a comic character on it. The clients look at this, speak to each other in a foreign language and walk away from the meeting laughing at the guy who put down the card. I have never been more angry at a TV ad than this one, it's really a slap in the face of everyone who likes comic books, comic based movies, and so on.

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.

JM: Angry man. Are you done?

JQ: Yes. No, wait! No! This is important.

I rarely do this, I always avoid discussing politics in a public forum, but after last week's presidential debate, I'm very frustrated and feel that I have come across an alternative that will help save our great nation.

http://zod2008.com/index.htm

Get out and VOTE!

JM: On that note, we are so reader questioning…

Mahgninnuc asks:

Since there are so many heroes from New York, which ones are Met fans and which ones are Yankee fans? Also, since Steve Rogers is from Brooklyn in the 1930's, is he a Yankee, Dodger, Giant, or Met fan?

JQ: Spider-Man is definitely a Mets fan, as Pete has grown up in Queens and much like the Mets, he is a loveable loser. Ben Grimm is a die-hard Yankee fan, and Johnny Storm roots for the Red Sox just piss Ben off. Steve Rogers is a Brooklyn Dodger fan, but finds it hard to root for them now that they're in L.A.. He also finds it hard to root for the Mets, and he definitely can't root for the Yanks, being an Ebbets Field boy. So I think he follows the Coney Island Cyclones, the Mets' minor league team.

Wolverine is a front-runner, so he roots for the Yanks, but this season, he also secretly roots for the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL.

Cain asks:

Where are the X-Babies and Mitey 'Vengers? They're just really awesome with a lot of great story possibilities, so I'm interested to find out if there are any future plans for these two titanic tiny teams. (Whoa, lots of T's, there.)

JQ: Ugh. Cain, it sounds to me like somebody's been reading some DC comics recently…

Dark Knight asks:

Is Madelyne Prior dead for good? Is she still alive somewhere? Is she going to make a return in a future book?

JQ: Well, Dark, that's a great question being posed at a great time. Keep your eyes open. In fact, keep your eyes open here for a preview of stunning Alan Davis art from Astonishing X-Men: Ghost Boxes 1! Eventually, you'll find out about Maddy. You get your Alan Davis NOW.

Valeria Kementari queries:

As a writer, what's your take on Internet fan-fiction? Some people such as J.K. Rowling adore fanfics, because sometimes the fans come up with great ideas. What's your take on it?

JQ: I have no problems with fan fiction. To me it just shows fan's love of what it is that we do for a living. And while I would never have the time to go to a fan fic site to check out people's work, I do think it's a good place for writers to test out their craft. That said, it's not a place where we would ever look for new ideas. We have a submissions department which looks for new voices as far as writers and artists are concerned, and that's where we look for tomorrow's talented folk.

A Fan Of Delicious Flavor sez:

Hi Joe,
Is there any chance that Marvel might start up Malibu Comics again? Some of the character in that Universe were cool and amazing, such as Lord Pumpkin, Nightman, and Prime. All would make excellent heroes or villains in the Marvel U.

JQ: Nope, due to some behind-the-scenes stuff that I'm not able to discuss. I doubt we'll ever be dabbling in these characters any time soon.

Andrew asks:

Just wondering if you can update us on the Jeph Loeb/Jeff Campbell Spidey series. It seems like it was announced forever ago (I'm pretty sure it was while Spidey was wearing the red and gold "Iron Spider" suit). I'm wondering if it is ever going to come out, or if it got canned or something.

JQ: Andrew, the Loeb/Campbell Spider-Man is a very special book for us, and rather than launch it and potentially get waylaid by delays, we've decided to wait until the book is done to solicit it. That way, we're assuring you that it comes out on time. The two J's are well into it though, and when it finally comes out your eyes are going to be blown out of the back of your head and right onto Mephisto's lap. It's beautiful stuff.

Stephen asks:

Hey Joe,
Since NYX was your baby, can you shed some light on X-23? Of course she is an X-Man now, but will we ever see when and why she left the NYX storyline and what kind of impact it had on the other characters?

JQ: Definitely. NYX writer Marjorie Liu is working on a story that reunites X-23 with Kiden, Tatiana, Bobby, and Li'l Bro. We'll see what her absence has meant to the NYX kids, and what the NYX kids mean to her…

On a related note, if you're reading this and haven't picked up NYX, then you're missing out on an unbelievably amazing comic. I'm calling it here—Marjorie Liu is going to be one of those truly unique voices in the comics field and a future superstar! I'm blown away with what she's doing on NYX! Don't dawdle, go check it out.

I am not swearing anymore asks:

With Dan Slott taking over writing Mighty Avengers, will any of the characters from Slott's Avengers: The Initiative get full Avengers status? Perhaps Cloud 9 or Justice?

JQ: That's definitely a possibility, I am not swearing anymore, but we won't be able to say anything definitive about the future rosters of any of the Avengers titles—New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Dark Avengers or Avengers: The Initiative—until Secret Invasion ends, for obvious reasons.

Spidey 616 asks:

Since Stephen Colbert will be teaming up with Spidey in a short story written by Mark Waid, when can we expect you to appear on The Colbert Report again?

JQ: Honestly, I don't know. That kind of stuff is always up to Stephen and his crew, but any time they need me on for the ratings boost, I'm there for them.

4SAKE asks:

Will the death of the Invisible Woman affect the regular Marvel Universe?

JQ: 4SAKE, it's happening in the regular Marvel Universe, so yes, of course.

Burner wants to know:

Are Chamber and Franklin Richards still mutants? Neither of them have displayed any powers post M-Day, but Franklin is still listed as a mutant, I think, and in New Excalibur, it was said that Chamber was an omega-class mutant.

JQ: Burner, Chamber isn't a mutant anymore. You can find him with the New Warriors. As for Franklin Richards, his powers were stripped away quite some time ago, even before M-Day.

Renda asks:

Okay, Joe, I'm calling you out: When will the previous Squadron Supreme series be completed? It's very unprofessional to just leave it hanging like that.

JQ: Renda, Squadron Supreme Vol. 1 is done! Over! Finito! The current Squadron Supreme series is the continuation of that previous series. We've jumped ahead in time, but the ramifications of the Squadron's (unseen) battle with Redstone and the subsequent Ultimate Power story reverberate to this day. And once the original Squadron return—I mean, IF they return—we might get some answers as to where they have been and what happened in the missing time.

And we'll end with a preview of She-Hulk 34—can you say "Lady Liberators? And She Hulk Annual goodness?"

Ok, fine, one more preview—Nova 18.

Hey Joe. There has been a major debate amongst X-Fans and maybe you can finally put this to rest.
Is Canonball an External? Yes or No?

Hi Joe,
I missed you at Comic Con (I was workin'!) but I'm happy to ask a question you probably can't answer! Is there plans to carry Moon Knight much longer? I'm not asking for a spoiler to the current story line, just wondering if the title is going to survive much longer?

And will we see Hawkeye rocking the purple outfit and bow anytime soon?

Joe,

1. Hi, I am really interested in working for Marvel in the future.

What kind of degrees and such does it require?

2. When will Elixir be back? He is my favorite character.

He should be put in the Young X-men!

Mike.

Franklin Richards. He was introduced close to close to 40 years ago. I know John Byrne aged and de-aged him about 25 years ago. He's been a member of Power Pack. Julie Power grew up to be a member of Loners. Everytime I read Loners, I'd think of Franklin. Everyone in the Marvel Universe from 40 years ago has aged at least 10 years. The most recent Fantastic Four 560 depicts him as around 7 years old. Albeit, a 7 year old who has Mark Millar's amazingly violent Kick-Ass and Wanted in his room...for some reason. At this point, Franklin Richards has had the most amazing childhood of any literary character in the history of printed fiction. I would very much like to see him grow up and use the experience he has gained from crossing paths with Marvel's Who's Who for the last 4 decades. Did I miss a story where Mephisto stuck him in his 7 year old body because Marvel writer's only want to write stories about a 7yr old Franklin? At the rate Valeria is growing, she'll pass Franklin soon. The out-of-continuity, "Son of a Genuis" issues are awesome, but, c'mon. Show Franklin some love. Appeal to the teen readers out there and have him grow up a little and go through puberty, etc.

Hey Joe!
For starters, I'd like to praise Marvel for the great job you do with Deadpool.

It's awesome! Us humans love it! Give Daniel Way a raise and 10% off in comic book stores!
As a huge Deadpool fan I would also like to buy merchandise, especially a belt buckle like he has on his costume. I promise that if Marvel will make one, I'll surely buy it and wear for my wedding, whenever that'll happen...
So, so you have any plans for a Merc With a Mouth merchandise? And am I going to have a belt buckle for my wedding, or should I only wear suspenders?

and speaking of Franklin Richards and Skrulls, are Skrulls stupid enough to not take his powers? I realize it'd be a bit anti-climactic, but it'd still be an interesting What If..? to see.

Hey Joe! A few sci-fi related book questions.....

1) newuniversal is in my top 5 list of favorite books right now and it's a little sad because it seems Marvel doesn't promote this book enough or at all actually like it does it's other titles. Maybe it's just me. Volume 1 was fantastic but the wait for Volume 2: Shockfront was excruciating. Add to that it's having scheduling difficulties after only 2 issues. With issue 1 out on time, and issue 2 a little late. The 1959 and Conqueror one-shots were fantastic fill ins to what Warren Ellis couldn't get to in his main book. Why I'm asking about the scheduling is because the solicited issues 3 and 4 have disappeared from your posted release months for October, November, and December at Marvel. com.
Is this a mistake or have these issues been pulled from those months and why?

2) Will newuniversal continue beyond Shockfront issue 6 or will a new writer like 1959's Kieron Gillen or Conqueror's Simon Spurrier take over for Warren Ellis?

3) Sticking with the sci-fi theme here, Soleil's Universal War One has been a very fun read. But when it was first solicited in your Soleil sampler book earlier this year and on the back cover to Sky Doll, it was solicited as a 6 issue series like the original French prints (the Soleil sampler shows 5 of the 6 covers) with each issue 48 pages. As it got closer to it's release date, I noticed Marvel changed UW1's issue count to 3. Were the original 6 French issues condensed to the three you are soliciting, or are you saving the other 3 issues for later this year or next year? The same question applies to your other Soleil book Scourage of the Gods as it was originally solicited as 6 issues and now it's being solicited as 3.

Joe, I know you said Franklin doesn't have his powers anymore, but you didn't elaborate on which set of powers are gone—his reality warping powers or his psionic ones.
Since he wasn't listed as de-powered after M-Day, as a mutant doesn't he still have the genetic potential to manifest them when he gets older?

Any chance we could see the classic G.I.
Joe: A Real American Hero books reprinted? Please oh please, please please please!

Also, after Cap’s death, you gave Stephen Colbert Cap’s shield. I did some home work and found out that the shield was one of 2 that the Marvel offices had specially made.
The shield looks to be of fantastic quality, much better than my Factory X replica, what are they made out of? Is it true that one is “cursed”? And lastly: Since you gave Stephen one of the shields, can I have the other one?

Are there any plans to bring back the Marvel prop replicas? Cap’s Shield, Web Shooters, Thor’s Hammer, etc.

Pretty much everything Marvel is doing at the moment is gold..... Except that Unamazing Spider-man character you seem to love so much. Anyway: 1. Now that the better Quasar(Wendall) is back, where is the best place to follow his story, is it Nova or GOTG? Any what issue? 2. With the Invisible Woman dying will Mephisto show up and offer Reed Richards the chance to save her life simply by erasing the fact they were ever married? 3. It was so cruel of you guys to tease us with MockingSkrull in SI, any chance for the real Mockingbird to come back to life? 4. You've got Ultimate Spider-man & Amazing Spider-man for those that want to read about a unmarried Spider-man and you have Spider-girl if we want a old retired Spider-man, but what comic can us fans who love Peter and Mary-Jane married have? Is there a chance of a regular comic what if style that continues the marriage set in current day? 5.
Your so sure the majority of people want an Un-married Spider-man, how about you put your money where your mouth is and have a vote form to send in placed in an issue of Amazing Spider-man so we all get our chance to have our say? That way all these new readers that you've picked up that the Spider-man creative team love mentioning can vote against the marriage, and all us small group of disgruntled internet fans can vote for it!!

With Captain America and Daredevil soon reaching what would be anniversary issues in their original numbering, is there any chance they'll revert back to it?

1.
Are there any plans to deal with Kitty Pryde's fate at the end of Whedon's Astonishing X-Men?

2. Mico Suayan - any project planned for him? I loved his Moon Knight run, it'd be a blast to have him back on the book.

hey Joe, wuuuuuhats happenin?

count me in as one of the people who have been beyond impressed by the Brand New Day initiative, its injected so much into Spidey that has been sorely missing.
some spidey qs,

1. is there anyway Pat Oliffe can become one of the regular pencilers in the BND rotation? he is absolutely one of the best pencilers in the industry today and needs some regular work
2.
its been a blast seeing the old rouges gallery get revamped recently but i have got to know, how much longer until doc ock makes get grand reentry?
3.
last one isnt so much a question, but its going to get really hard to drown out the pleas from us Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider fans at conventions and on the webs, you do have a prime opportunity to bring him back

quick avengers q's also, but ill understand if you give "wait and sees"

4.
where can i go to see the following post SI
-what happened to the Sentry
-the next step for the Hood
-status of Dr.
Strange?

5.
when mighty avengers was announced, Bendis promised some exploration into Ares, including the mother of Alexander/Phobos, are we going to see this plot thread answered at some point?

thanks for everything you do joe! until Dark Reign means the return of NFL Superpro, makes mine Marvel!

just a couple of q's about Spiderman and some post SI tidbits
1.
is there anyway Pat Oliffe can get on the regular BND rotation? i think he is one of the absolute best artists in the biz and he deserves one of those fancy exclusive contracts or at least some regular work
2. ive just been monstrously excited to see all of the old rouges gallery get well deserved revamps with the advent of BND and more specifically New Ways to Die.
how much longer do we have to wait until the glorious and hopefully awesome return of doc ock?
3. last spidey question isnt actually much of a question, its going to be real tough to keep ignoring all of us Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider fan at conventions and on the webs. you guys do have a prime opprotunity to bring him back...
4 ok so post SI where do i have to go to see the following plot threads?
-what happened to the Sentry
-the Hoods next move
-the status of Doc Strange
5. when Mighty Avengers was first announced, Bendis promised some insight into Ares civilian background, including the identity of Alexander/Phobos' mother.
are we going to get a chance to see this followed up on?
6.
any hints on what "jangly" Jim Mcanns secret post SI project is going to be?

thanks for your time Joe, and until Dark Reign means the return of NFL Superpro, make mine Marvel!

Hey Joe.

Firstly, thanks for all the great books you've put out since taking over as EIC in 2000. All the flak you seem to get, I don't think it's said often enough. So thanks.

3 Questions for you:

1) I know collections isn't your department, but you said that to celebrate the Marvel Knight 10th Anniversary that there would be hard cover reprints of some of the best from the line. Well, to date we've had your and Kevin Smith's DD arc (which has already been available in Hardback as DD Volume 1) and the good but (IMHO) over-rated Marvel Boy mini-series and that's it. Where oh where is a HC reprint of the jewell in the crown of that line: Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee's Inhumans Maxi-Series? With Jae tearing it up on the Stephen King properties surely getting the high point of his career out is a no-brainer? Also any chance of getting Avengers Forever from the same time period out in HC as well? The Busiek / Perez issues have all been gven the HC treatment and this seems like a glaring omission.

2) Any chance of Ian Edginton getting some work at Marvel? Of all the writers I can think of not currently working at Marvel who aren't on DC Exclusives he seems an obvious choice. Check out his Scarlet Traces stuff at Dark Horse and the collection of his and D'Israeli's "Leviathan" from 2000ad if you don't believe me. The single worst writer (IMHO) to come out of 2000ad in the 18 years I've been reading it is Simon Spurrier, and if he can get work at Marvel I'm literally gobsmacked that (IMHO) the best of the last few years isn't getting a look in.

3) You mention that you have a submissions department that looks out for new voices. I'm wondering exactly what that involves? Is it just looking at invite-only scripts? You don't accept unsolicited manuscripts and mention that they wouldn't look at Fan-Fic. Fair enough, that goes for most, if not all, companies. But as a writer living in England I'm wondering how I get my stuff looked at. I can't draw and don't know any artists, and whilst I'd love to get into comics I just want to be a writer. In any medium. I've been working in the theatre for several years, I get my plays put on and am constantly developing my own voice.
But no one from Marvel is going to fly over to England to check out my stuff (I wouldn't expect them to) so how do I get on Marvel's radar?

Thanks for your time - keep up the good work.

joe, so if wolvie is a football fan and he is secretly rooting for the cowboys (ugh!), does he like college football? if so does he pull for Michigan? :P

my real question is this...do you ever foresee a time where comics will transition from individual issues to trades? I mean at some point, if prices on the comics keep going up, the industry will prices themselves out of business.
so wouldn't the logical step be to release everything in trades to keep the prices at a "fair market value" or are writers and artists going to have to take less money to do what they do?

Personally, i'd hate to see the individual issues go away, there's something magical about them. it's what makes comics, well, comics. it just wouldn't be the same if they disappeared, but i'd find it really hard to pay 3.99 or 4.99 for a 22 page story. i mean i remember the good ol' days of the 60 cent cover prices.
:)

thanks and keep on doin' that voodoo that you do so well!

Hey Joe,

In Ultimate Spider-man, it's been established by issue 33 that Peter's parents died sometime when he was a young boy, shown by their appearance in a home video. But, Ultimate Origin 4 revealed that they were actually killed by the Hulk while Peter was an infant.
So I guess my questions are:

1.
What's the story behind the video and Peter's childhood friendship with Eddie Brock now?
2.
If the plane crash is now just a cover up, then what happened to the Brocks who were said to have died in the same crash?

Mahalo again for another good column.

A couple of questions...

1. I know you cannot divulge spoilers but will Gage be doing the Initiative for a long while to come or is it only for a short stint? Fan of his work.

2.
Would Hank Pym be a Giants fan?

3.
Any update on the Genndy Tartakovsky Cage project?

Would enjoy seeing you on Colbert again. He could use a "Quesada bump".

Well Unfortunate as it is, that is the way we comic book readers are looked at by other people. Considering most comics are about Super Heroes and Super Heroes are, in their minds, for kids. It's very much a "Oh look, this guy must of the menatallity of a six year old." Anyways... I love Iron Man. I grew up watching the animated 90's cartoon series. Much of what I love about the character i owe to David Micheline and Bob Layton, mainly for their Demon in a Bottle and Armor Wars storylines. I was wondering if we could get more Micheline and Layton stories. I know that Iron Man: The End is coming up, but is there anyway that we could possible get even more stories from these two? Also I thought that the Knauf's were fantastic on Iron Man, especially on Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. 15-18 and 21-28. Then when the wrapped up this story that, in my opinion, was not only just as good IF NOT BETTER then what Brubaker was doing on Cap, but also (again in my opinion) one of the best Iron Man stories ever. But then after that they were replaced by the Stuart Moore and his less then steller "With Iron Hands" story. So I was just really wondering why the Knaufs were taken off the book.

Regarding your Colbert cover for Spider-Man, since I'm new to the whole paying attention to variant editions, is this cover a limited one where I would have to pay more for?

Hey Joe. I'm not in the comic book reading zone right now although I'm collecting them all, but I'm in the art school zone instead, so I guess that's good since you told me that's where you went on your old message boards. I miss Matt Adler and Spindle and Jon Quixote and all of them, but the King lives on! Lol. How do you feel about fans that have to only collect the same titles for continuity instead of supporting new titles from top notch artists (Silvestri's titles, Jim Lee's titles, Art Adams is back etc..) like when Image Comics first came out? Because I remember you telling us fans on the message boards about taking continuity seriously.
And what good memories do you have of Art School for me to tell my painting homies? (Did you paint?)

have a good week cup of Joe's special at BK Late Night, Lol

Hey Joe Q! As you might have noticed from my display name I'm a HUGE fan og Ghost Rider (as well as other Marvel Characters).
I've got a couple of questions for you dude:
1.
) Any plans for Vengeance (Ghost Rider hero/villain)?
2. I know you cannot reveal who is in the post-SI Avengers lineup (Dark, Mighty and New), but by elimination I guess it will NOT involve Ghost Rider, Howard the Duck, Blade and Morbius. Do I guess right if I say that after SI villains will "take over" U.S.
of A? and the Dark Avengers are effectively a team of would-be villains like the current amazing Thunderbolts?
3.) I just love the new Venom: Dark Origin mini.
Can there be a sort of "sequel" about Carnage?
4.) Last but not least: I sooooo wanna see an Ultimate Ghost Rider; I'd love him to be similair in look to his 616 counterpart but maybe with some variants in powers.
Any plans?
Thanks mate

Well, could you do the same for Chris Claremont's X-treme X-men run? Thanks!

C'mon Joe
Please can we see Toxin again?
He has a huge cult fanbase and he hasn't even been mentioned in years. All we need is one little comment to let us know that he hasn't been forgotten.

Spidey needs as many friends as he can get nowadays and few of them come stronger than Pat Mulligan.

So what d'ya say?

hey Joe,

Love your column, however a few things on my mind,

1) in last weeks column, you said "the other" still happened, but if it did, Peter wouldn't need web shooters.

2) Due to the recent video game, "spider-man Friend or Foe" I have come to like the idea of Harry Obsorn as the "New Goblin" akin to Spider-man 3's character.

With BND, any chance of Harry donning a new age Goblin suit and having a spidey-goblin duo if just for a little while?

Thanks Joe and keep up the good work

I find that AmEx commercial to be rather ironic in that just ten years ago, AmEx were running commercials featuring Superman alongside Jerry Seinfeld.

Hello Joe. Thank you for answering my questions. I enjoy this column very much. Continue to do the great work you do at Marvel. I have some questions I hope you answer.

1) Please return Captain America to its original numbering.

2) Why is Bendis leaving the Mighty Avengers?
3) When is the Beyonder going to return?
4) Since Peter Parker and Mary Jane never got married does that mean Baby May never existed?
5) After New Ways to Die will Norman Osborn and Venom continue to appear in The Amazing Spider-Man?
6) What happened to the footage of Peter Parker unmasking in Civil War?
7) I heard Roger Stern and Mark Waid are joining the Spidey brain Trust.
Is that true?

Hey Joe,
What is Mark Bagley doing now? I loved him on Ultimate Spider-man, but I haven't seen him since Immomen took over.

And is Marvel planning on doing an animated movie on "One More Day"? Maybe getting the story out there, which is a good story in an of itself, would bring people around on the issue.

Right.

MIGHTY AVENGERS 17
PENCILS: KHOI PHAM
INKS: DANNY MIKI
COLORED BY: DEAN WHITE
LETTERED BY: DAVE LANPHEAR

The legacy of CAPTAIN MARVEL! The return of MAR-VELL has brought with it more questions then answers. In this special Secret Invasion tie-in, all those questions will be answered. Plus, Marvel Boy is confronted with his true destiny.

Except it wasn't, was it? I rushed out, I bought it, and I was met with more tales of more Yellowjacket. And I wasn't impressed.
Why, Joey, just why?

And where is this story? Is this now Mighty Avengers 19? I don't think it could be, with 19 having pencils by Steve Kurth, not Khoi Pham who is down for 17.

Maybe it's been mentioned before, as it's been a good few months, but I'm yet to see any mention of it.

Help me out here, I'm a lifelong fan of Captain Marvel, and Marvel Boy has become an interesting character now he's firmly in the regular MarvelU.

JQ,

As always I thank and appreciate you taking time to answers our questions and comments but positive and negative. Today I would like to take some time to discuss Daredevil. First a comment. I have every issue of Vol 2, including the hard to find Bob Gale issues, and I just finished re-reading Guadian Devil and Parts of a Hole arcs that you penciled. I am currently re-reading all my DD. I want to say I think the work you did on that book is incredible probably the best I ever seen from you.

Now onto my questinos:
1. Is the Lady Bullseye arc considered to be, on some level, almost a "restart" for the book. It is not a retcon or a re-boot but for the first time since well volume 2 began there are not many plots that have been left unresolved. Now I know the sales for DD are in the 40K range, which I am guessing is decent for a book like it, but it just seems like Lady Bullseye is the perfect arc for new readers to catch on.
Was this a decision made by Bru himself or did editorial have anything to do with it?

2. Do you miss not being abole to pencil as much as you used to? I know you have an indie book right(?) but I am thinking of Marvel characters.
Is there any chance you could return to the pencils for a mini or something?

3. I think your style is perfectly suited to pencil a title in the Ultimate line. How about you and Millar on Ultimate Avengers? That would be sick.

4. I LOVE X-Force and I think the writing of Kyle/Yost is excellent but I would like to see Millar take a run on that book. Even for only a few issues like "Old Man Wolverine".
That book just screams Mark as we know how much Mark likes to go over the top with Action and gore? C'mon what do you say?

Take care JQ and I will let you mourn another collapse of your Mets.
As always MMM!

What's up with Iron Man: The End?!@! What is the reasoning behind this? What overall vision do you have for the Iron Man: The End series? Does this mean the end of the Invincible Iron Man comics is coming sometime down the line?

I was actually just wondering if we'll ever see a Young Avengers monthly series again. I mean an ongoing, not a mini team up with Runaways. Last I heard YA was a hit... then issue 12 and... nothing. Sure, they made appearances here and there. Hit implies that it sold well, and I remember it being very popular...

Hey again Joe. Marvel's film division has had a lot happening lately what with quite a few projects down the line.
Since you and a few other creators at Marvel consulted with the first Iron Man film, think you'll be involved in the sequel or any of the other various Marvel films such as Thor, Captain America, or The Avengers?

Hi Joe, A couple of quick ones: 1. Deadpool, Marvel Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, Incredible Herc -- these books are bringing the funny on top of the action on a consistent basis. Any other titles you can suggest that are in the same vein? 2. I heard a while back that Matt Fraction was taking over Ghost Rider. Is that happening, or did I hear wrong? 3. How much input does Stan Lee have these days? Is he still running the show in a hands-on fashion? Thanks!
