"The art form of Cooning was thought to be long dead and put into it's cemetary. Now it seems cooning is back and bigger than it ever was before. For those who don't know what Cooning is, it's when Black people, er excuse me, ******s perpetuate negative stereotypes that people have of Black people. Stereotypes such as we are all ignorant, sex crazed monkeys, obsessing over material items, forever trying to be flashy, overly celebratory, and thuggish violent scary Black creatures. After positive strides mad by the Cosby Show, Spike Lee movies, and various roles by Denzell Washington, Angela Basset, Samuel Jackson to name a few. Cooning has come back to slap Black people back to the 1920's and 1940's, the hey day of cooning. Source: forum on the net

Where do you see the most coonery ? In music or tv/movies?

Explain

Believe it or not, Tyler Perry makes the list.

tasha smithIf you saw his, "Why did I get married" movie, you know what I'm talking about. Tasha Smith played the role of a LOUD obnoxious winch! Her character was exactly what people have been saying about black women, that we're loud, rude and have bad attitudes.

That movie only perpetuated the stereotype.

Stop being surprised when outsiders look down at us. Can you really blame'm? I can't.

I don't think that woman from Tyler Perry's movie could be classified as a coon. Only because there are women that really act like that. Just because we have 50 Cent or a Juelz Santana doesn't take away from the Oprah Winfrey's and Leela James, ya know. Ignorant people are everywhere it just seems like non-whites seem to think that they embarass the race.
People know that successful Black people exist. If anything, they try to ignore it in order to prove a point but that doesn't change the fact that they are out there. I can act ignorant all day long, that doesn't erase your accomplishments.

that might not change your accomplishments, but it can diminish your character. the bad can outweigh the good.

no matter how much 50 donates to anything positive, he'll always be known for gangsta rap, glorifying the hood, drugs and crime. What is his legacy?
Wht does his image look like today? is it a good or bad image?

"that might not change your accomplishments, but it can diminish your character. the bad can outweigh the good."

I may have not worded that clearly. I mean if I'm ignorant that doesn't make u ignorant. We are two separate people, that's like if one white man is a child molester then we should think all white men are child molesters. Why does that logic only apply when talking about black people? If someone is stupid enough to let BET define what Black people are then why would I care about there opinion anyway? It is a known fact that successful Black people exist so if someone wants to ignore it and point to a rapper then I know they are just trying to bait me into an argument.

Ebony - The 1 He Wants

There are good, bad, and ignorant people in every race, creed, color, etc. The truth of the matter is that blacks are the most hated. As soon as we bust through one barrier, another is created. People just have nothing better to do then to stereotype and typecast. I am black and PROUD, I am not loud nor ghetto. I have a college education and a decent job, and I will still be called a nigger regardless of what I do. Whether you do good or bad, SOMEONE is going to talk about you. As a matter of fact, the better you do, the more they will talk. I just charge it to the game and keep it moving. Talk about me as you please, but I am who I am and that's something "they" can never be.

I dont consider Tasha's character coonery. Black women act like that. Walk outside. Get on the train. Look at an auntie. Go to church. You will see her character about 10 times everyday. lol I actually liked her character. She wasn't ignorant...she was just no nonsense. Plus she was an entrepreneur.

I HAVe seen coonery on tv, movies, and through music though. The problem lies in balance. I think it is ridiculous to try to cut it out completely because THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ACT LIKE THAT. There are people who enjoy that kind of entertainment. The problem comes in when THAT IS ALL WE SEE...WHEN ITS THE ONLY WAY WE ARE DEPICTED. Black people are not one dimensional. We have many different attitudes. Some of our attributes as a people are phenomonal. Some are despicable. We cannot say, "we should only be cast in a good light", because that would be just as bad a coonery...lying about who we are as a people.

We need to just keep it real and keep it balanced. For every show celebrating an idiot, we need to celebrate a genius. But the only way we can even get the chance to celebrate geniuses, is if people like us can get enough money, power, and respect to make our own entertainment.

Where do you see the most coonery ? In music or tv/movies?

Hmmm. Tough question. I'd probably say music only because there's so much more of it, & it's influence is more widespread. In fact, you could say that the movies & TV shows are tying to reflect what is popularized in the music. Which is why you see so many rappers in movies (some good, some bad) these days.

Believe it or not, Tyler Perry makes the list.

Oh, I believe it. I haven't seen any of his movies, because they just don't look interesting to me @ all. But I did catch 2 episode of his TV show, House of Payne, because a Myspace friend of mine had a guest-starring role on it, so I wanted to check him out. And that show was straight garbage. I had to force myself not to change the channel & sit through the whole thing. It wasn't even remotely funny, & the characters seemed so over-the-top, I just couldn't stand it.

Stop being surprised when outsiders look down at us. Can you really blame'm? I can't.

One incident always stuck in my mind. It was years ago, I was watching some season of "The Real World" on MTV and there was a Black guy & White guy talking, & the Black guy was making fun of the White guy for liking Country music. And the White guy started imitating rappers, saying "Yo yo," & "Know what I'm sayin'" and making a bunch of hand gestures, & the Black guy was getting upset with him, saying that was stereotyping. And then during the commercial I clicked over to BET & there was some rap group on being interview & they were acting EXACTLY like the White guy on MTV was saying. It was just so weird to see it out there like that. And I was thinking, if I was some White guy from some small Southern town & THIS was the only image of Black people that I was steadily receiving then of course that's how I would think they all are.

Now, imagine what folks in other countries where there are no Black folks would think...

I feel you on that one. Cooning has NEVER disappeared. It's just changed flavors. (No pun intended). The saddest part of it is that the most influential and media savvy of us switched sides decades ago, selling their own people out to a steady diet of ignorance. The result? Legions of people misled and confused as to what it means to be "Real", "Gangsta," and most of all Black or Brown. For what? A measly drop in the beast's bucket. We represent 13% of the population, control less than 1% of the wealth, and less than 3% of media, including print, television, AND RADIO. Nobody cares that BET is "Black" only by name, and only broadcast what a particular corporation deems should be "entertaining" to Black people (Or better yet what they deem should be the pervasive image of Black people to the rest of the world who has cable) . It will stop when Black people start vocally and visibly INVALIDATING the vampires of our community. MAKE IT KNOWN that they not only do not represent you BUT THAT THEY ARE A FALSE REPRESENTATIVE OF OUR WHOLE COMMUNITY. Trojan horses, if you will. Their greatest gimmick was taking the so-called house (sic) and dressing him /her up as the field (sic), calling it real and true, while convincing not only our young minds to put on the shoe polish, but the whole world. Put down the shoe polish, people, and push Step'n Fetchit off your TV, radio, and street corners.

In my opinion, I would have to say in the music..Music, especially rap (which I happen to like) has changed so much from back in the day...Yes, dont get me wrong there was some rap that promoted negativty, but not like today's rap..All you see/hear in the rap today is about smokin weed, "bitchez & hoes"and how to be gangsta..And i think it does rub off on our black youth today, because they think that is what its about...And yes we do get stero typed , just for that reason, because non-black people see us portraying ourselves in that manner, and they think the WHOLE black race is like that..Not true....but if that is how you act, that is how you are going to be thought of as being..

What makes me crazy is that the country CHOOSES to see black people in the light described above (i.e. rap videos). What about all of the other black muscians in the world? Are white people unaware of them, altogether, or do they just CHOOSE not to see them? I've never heard anyone speak of black people in a derogatory manner, while saying they emulate John Legend.

I tend to think that white people rather enjoy stereotyping, they way many of them do. It perpetuates their feeling of superiority. I see many black artists (tv, radio, and movies), that people CHOOSE to ignore. Oh...and don't get me started on how many white men I've known that have said they'd never date outside their race, unless it was someone like Penelope Cruz or Beyoncé. That's really sad.

I think that Americans need to accept responsibility for the inaccurate views that we have in this country. This goes for every race...every person. Make these situations your own. Internalize them and take every opportunity to take a moment from your hectic day and change someone's mind.

Pantz...you already know about me and my background. You also know how I loathe racism. I try and make a difference, with every opportunity that I have. Many times, MAKING the opportunities!

Quick example: I was talking about how homesick I was for the city the other day. I had a guy in this country little town I moved to, make a racist innuendo during a conversation we were having. I stopped what I was doing...in that moment and CHOSE to enlighten him. As was mentioned earlier, many of these people that have these views have never been around people of color. Any color. Not only that...but their behavior is learned. After talking with him at length, I realized that he really wasn't racist after all, but rather uneducated. When all was said and done, some time later, he thanked me for taking the time.

This apparently has to be more of a grassroots effort. Word of mouth...one individual at a time. I figure if I can help change the views of at least one person a week...that's roughly 2,340 people in my adult lifetime. And that's just me. That doesn't include the people who's views I've helped enlighten or my children...whom will do the same. Now imagine if everyone did that, instead of talking mess and ignoring it...thinking these ignorant people are lost causes.

'Cause if you really think about it...they ARE ignorant. They really don't know.

Much love to my Pantz!!!

Here's my question... How is it that a 14 y.o. can come to the conclusion that a rapper/video vixen who has been to jail twice or has four kids by three different people know infinitelymore than mom, dad, grandmom or whoever keeps the roof up and the stomach full? I'd really like to know how we came to that.

Often, American Gangster episodes conclude by saying that crime doesn't pay with the former drug dealers shown rotting in jail, but the message is lost in the images glorifying gangsterism.

Lebron james, a black athlete, is depicted on the cover of a magazine looking like a beast bouncing a basket ball with one arm and holding a white woman with the other, but there are no other positive mainstream images of black athletes to balance things out. I won't even mention the news! if you watch half an hour of american news, you'd swear that blacks are the ones that commit crimes. No wonder, even amongst blacks, black people are associated with crime.

there has to be balance. and if you have the stage, use your chance to shine to show people we are more than what the stereotypes say.

tyler doesn't have to dress up like a woman, have a loud mouth woman in his movies to bring forth a message. too much ignorance in movies.

we as a race have so much to work on. we need not have so much time for ignorance. but i have to give tyler props, he does bring a good message in his movies.

but 'why did i get married' only perpetuated the stereotype that black women are loud and bustly.

if bill cosby had done the movie, that ignorant character would not have been in there

I have to disagree about you saying this his movies perpetuate the stereotype of black women being loud. Like i said before, we need balance. And "why did I get married?" was balanced. Jill, Janet and the other two main female characters were not loud women at all.

Why is it that him showing ONE woman like that, means hes perpetuating stereotypes, when in essence most black women have that one girlfriend who act like that? You might not, but I know plenty of women exactly like her.

The thing is though, he didnt make ALL of the characters like her. He made one out of five. Four of the women were positively reflected as far attitude and successful in their careers. Now tell me, how many times do we get to see Black women be doctors and business women and lawyers on the big screen?

say Hello . . .

you forgot one of the most ridiculous, yet often used stereotypes--all we eat is chicken and watermelon.
No, for real--this is one reason that I don't watch a lot of stuff that comes on BET, and even some of the "so-called" harmless sitcoms that come on the WB like Wayan's brothers. They are protrayed as clowns in most episodes, and the one main female character is portrayed as bitter/ man-crazed or desperate, etc. It's even spread to commercials (both on TV and print). It's so subtle that we accept it as norm/ as ok, not realizing the damage that it can cause youth who idolize TV, media, celebs, etc (why they are idolizing such things is another blog).
In terms of your questions--I don't really know, since I don't go to the movies often (last movie I saw was Dreamgirls) and I definitely dont watch videos. the only TV that I watch (not proud to admit) are a lot of the reality type shows--especially on BRAVO. Im also a Food Network junkie. But we shouldn't stop at just TV/ movies and music--print (magazine ads) play a role too.

i'm just trying to make a point.

they havin issues aobut stuff. don't worry. and i bet someone saying, why black people get to...and dont be an embarrassment lol
