"Happy" is the first of the beasts that was made to commemorate a specific pet, using it's actual bones. It started with a conversation. At one of my openings, I was talking to a couple of collectors. They told me about a pet they had once had, a cranky, mean old dachshund, named Happy. The one person who still had a great fondness for him was Gramps, who was equally ornery. One day, Gramps accidentally ran Happy over with the car. They buried Happy in the backyard.

10 years later, they were walking around the property where their old house had once stood. The bulldozers excavating the property had unearthed Happys skeleton. It was lying on the ground, perfectly intact. They decided that this dog was clearly meant to stay with them, somehow or other. So they packed him up and put it in a closet. What a perfectly bizarre, wonderful tale (to me, at least!)  I told them that if they ever wanted to commission a piece from him, to let me know. A year later, I began the piece, with only the instructions, "Make something wonderful."

What a very charming story for a delightful peice of work! I wasn't in the mode for rambling when I left a comment before, but I was going to say that the bird skull on my birdgirl's head is painted from the skull of a bird that my dear departed Kit-Kat caught. As she was in the habit of catching birds I was in the habit of cutting her prey's heads and wings off and burying the heads till they were clean.

How perfectly lovely. What a wonderful smiling tribute to "Happy," who wasn't so very happy in life. I only wish I had the bones of my dear departed feline friend, Spike. I would ask you to transform him. I loved that cat as one would a child. He was beautiful. A black and white manx, but he had a tail (yes, they can have longer tails. There are manx rumpies, stumpies, and longies He was a "longie") He had emerald green "oriental eyes."

He is buried in the backyard of a house we once rented in 2001. He died only a day or two before 9/11, so I had a double tragedy hit me. I was the one who had to dig his little grave alone, in the rain, and I buried him on a blue satin pillow with a photo of my daughter, and other mementos, including a cross. I read from the prayers of a Christian funeral rite for pets I had found online. I wish now I had had him taxidermied. I often wonder what the current landlord would say of I asked permission to dig up his remains? Hmmm.....

Its like a fairy tale...

ahh Happy...I don't think I'll ever hear the word quite the same again.

And I do love that Happy was a cranky meany...Now, if someone ever asks me, "Are you Happy"..even when Im feeling grumpy.... I can say YES, I am Happy.

Just like this well loved~ dirt unearthing~jowl smirkin' hound... perhaps theres a little bit of Happy in all of us.

love,
Syndra

Raea Zani of Empty Cage

This is a wonderful story Jessica.  It inspires me to unearth a dear rat of mine, Franchesca, or "Frankie" as we called her.  I'm inspired to do her spirit justice, using her bones.

Oh, I wish I knew where my beloved iguana is. He was the most amazing and loved pet ever, including dogs, cats, horses...imagine loving a reptile with your whole heart. That was my lovely green iguana. I let him out in my sister's garden to find the sunshine he so desperately needed, and haven't seen him since. I hope that if he ever shows up someone will treat him with the love you've shown Happy. :)
I doubt he's survived the past two winters...so someone will be noticing five feet of lovely green lizard.
