Here is the cover for CERTAIN GIRLS, the twelve-years-later sequel to GOOD IN BED, which I was all set to unveil with great pomp and fanfare, until I realized that it's already online on Amazon.com (damn those bastards!)

Anyhow. Here's Joy, all grown up and ready for her bat mitzvah! And Cannie, older, wiser, and seven pounds thinner than when we left her at the end of GOOD IN BED! Also, it is pink!

I like it a lot. I hope you do, too. I also hope to have the first chapter posted at some point in the new year. The book itself will be out on April 8.

In other news, things are going well with Baby the Second. I'm not sure whether this is a result of Number Two being a different kind of baby than Number One, or due to her parents actually sort of knowing what to expect and what they're doing, but we're settling into the newborn groove pretty nicely (and I'm knocking on wood and hoping I didn't jinx everything and doom myself to a week of sleepless nights by saying so).

This time around, I'm actually taking the advice that every parenting book in the universe gives you, which is to let go of the idea that you're going to be doing anything other than feeding the baby, staring at the baby, and possibly dozing yourself when the baby nods off for at least the first few weeks. If I write a few thank-you notes, make the bed, take a shower and watch fifteen minutes of Gossip Girl during a twelve-hour stretch, that's a good day. I'm also lucky enough to have friends who've dropped off all kinds of delicious stuff for dinner…and ridiculous amounts of help, both hired and volunteer.

I've also discovered the Mobywrap.

I bought a bunch of slings the first time around, but, generally speaking, they're not made for plus-size or big-on-top mothers, and even the one-size-fits-all would usually end up with the baby's head nestled somewhere in the vicinity my nose. Not good. The Mobywrap is basically a ten-yard piece of slightly stretchy tee-shirt jersey. You have to wrap it around your waist and over your shoulders in a way that looks extremely complicated but isn't, after you've done it once or twice, and it's by far the most comfortable and supportive wrap I've tried, and it's not too expensive, either. (And no, they're not paying me for saying any of this…I just really like it).

Another thing that I can wholeheartedly recommend: Ruth Ozeki's second novel, ALL OVER CREATION, which is a fantastic read: funny and provocative, with flawed, fully-realized characters, including a prodigal daughter, her proud, potato-farming father, and an unlikely eco-activist named Frank Perdue.
I loved Ozeki's first book, MY YEAR OF MEATS, but didn't even know she'd written another book until I stumbled across it in a used bookstore near the Penn campus, where I went to stock up the week before giving birth. I bought mostly things to re-read, figuring that my concentration probably wouldn't be where it normally is, what with the sleep deprivation, but the Ozeki book just sucked me in and now I can't put it down. It's fantastic.

(Oh, and one more recommendation...if you have a four or five-year-old and are expecting a new addition, get yourself a copy of HOW TO BE THE BABY (BY ME, THE BIG SISTER), which is hilarious and invaluable in helping the older kid get ready for a baby in the house by enumerating all of the things that a big kid can do/eat/play with that a baby cannot. Lucy loves it, and I can't imagine a kid her age who wouldn't).

Best wishes to everyone for a happy holiday and a peaceful, joyful New Year, and I'll be back in January with updates from Babyville and a sneak peek from the new book.

I agree that 2nd babies seem to be much much easier. At least my husband wasnt as freaked out with our 2nd son. With my oldest son he even told the nurse to watch his head.

I am SO excited about the new book.

Glad things are going smoothly thus far. You do get a rhythm going with baby 2. You'll also find having two the same sex will help immensely in the future with toys, clothes, books, and DVDs.

And I also can't wait for the new book...I want to hang out with Cannie (and Dolores from "She's Come Undone")!

I love babywearing! As a plus-<myspace>size</myspace>d mommy I always had trouble getting a good fit with slings... I started making my own.
The mobywrap is great! I used one when my youngest was little, and then I graduated to mei tai carriers "asian inspired" baby carriers that are quick and easy to put on. I still use one and my Willow is eighteen months old now :)

Congratulations on the new book, the baby and everything else :)

2nd baby is way more difficult for me than 1st baby. Also the fact that both boys have autism might have something to do with it. Can't wait for Certain Girls.

I am so extremly excited about your new book (an glad it is months from coming out since I am due to give birth myself any day now).

I actually found a sling (at some fancy boutique in San Francisco) that went to a plus-<myspace>size</myspace> of XL but was for 16 -18 <myspace>size</myspace> shirt. It was pricey but I bought it. I was afraid of the do-it-yourself wraps since I am new to it.

Can't wait to hear & read updates in the New Year.

I absolutely adore the cover. Kudos!

Also thanks for the recommendations, I just found out my best friend is pregnant with her 2nd, and I've been wanting to get her good gifts, but since I'm child-free I don't know what's good and what's not!

Happy Holidays.

I am so excited for this book! I am actually reading good in bed right now for the 8th time. I always find myself reading it around the holidays. I love it and I can't wait to read it. Is it from Cannie's perspective or Joy's? Also, do you have anything to do with the cover, like who the people on it are, or what it looks like? It's beautiful by the way, but just wondering.
I never did the baby sling, but probably more for money reasons than anything else, I just thought that they were expensive. I'm glad things are going well for you with baby no. 2, it was like that for me too.
Happy Holidays!

Love, love, love the new cover! Can't wait to read this book!!! I should probably re-read GIB just to get myself back up to speed...

I also found that the second baby was a lot easier to contend with... For us, the two books we used while I was PG with no. two were "Baby On the Way" and "What Baby Needs" by Dr. William Sears. They were both really great to read to our older one who was almost 4 when the baby was born.

I'm not a very little girl, and I always had trouble with those wraps... I got the one that you're referring to and it was just a total PITA for me to deal with and a screaming baby... LOL! I've just stuck with my "over the shoulder baby holder" and it's worked pretty well.

the confidence you have the second time around is awesome isn't it! and kudos on the Moby Wrap..loved mine! people would look at me and say ," that looks way to complicated". But it really isn't, and it's a life saver! I would pop my baby in there and go down sliding boards w/my 4yr old...it's great!
CONGRATS Again!
Can't wait for Certain Girls!

Your characters remind me of people I know in real life. If you ever make a movie based on Cannie, I thought of the perfect actress for the role. She is not famous. I cannot remember her name but she played the sister in law on a TV sitcom called "Yes, My Dear"? She is tall with long brunette hair. Look forward to reading Certain Grls.
