wow, what an amazing interview. I love the idea of multi media, and I think its a shame that so many fans dont see each song as a piece of art instead of just a good tune. Dont worry Billy, there are true fans out there and we see each song as the amazing work of art that it is.

billy gives very rational explanations but I don..t understand his points. maybe I..m a little stupid.....(1) it..s true that the fans applaud the old "hits" more than other songs in the setlist. ..but: the setlists contained mostly the "hits" and some zeitgeist-songs. because the zeitgeist-songs doesn..t reach the same level it..s clear, that the people applaud more the old "hits".....and beside of the hits and zeitgeist-songs there were not many other old pumpkins-songs but even these other pumpkins-songs (lucky 13, my blue heaven) get more clapping than the zeitgeist-songs.....so it just "seems" that the people just want hits. if the zeitgeist songs were as good as the old ones, there weren..t be that difference in the reactions of the crowd.....on the other hand, for an audience that partly never has heared the old singles live, it..s understandable that they are very exiting to hear those songs the first time live! ....for these people these songs are almost "new" and not old stuff. and other people are just excited to have the luck to hear the old pumpkins-songs after 7 years again.....the old songs are the core of the smashing pumpkins. one could live or die with this fact. ....but from billys point of view it..s just one possible explanation: people just want hits and aren..t open for other old pumpkins-songs or new songs...I mean he puts almost every single from the old albums in the setlists and complains about the good reactions. how should the reactions of the audience be, if the pumpkins play their own "best of" in a reunion-tour!? ..but in the year-2000-shows the people had also applaud completly new songs from machina II, they nver heared bevore! because instandly they feel they are as good as the other songs!....billys explanation just shifts a blame to the people, that their too shallow. ....but I think the new songs are just not good enough compared to the old ones. they are good, I respect them and I..m thankful to hear new song from billy but sadly they are not as good as "any" old pumpkins B-side, so though I like some of them (gossamer, zeitgeist, tarantula, that..s they way, stellar, rome burns) I don..t love them and would not buy "every" song of the zeitgeist-album, but some. I have heared all song of it many times, but indeed I like just a few of them. and I like to say that I was always pertubed about every "new" change (different style on adore, then different again in machina) so different song son mcis but I always could see the quality and after hearing hese albums two or threee times I really loved them! this is a sign of true art, you can..t access it by hearing it one time, but after hearing it longer you get the full taste, it..s like a exploration. sadly in zeitgeist I don..t have this feeling. ..the production sounds really crappy (sorry, I know it was a hard job!). ..why don..t you guys don..t use the same studio-equipment like in adore, siamese dram or mellon collie. ..just making use of same tape-machine used in mellon collie...hey, that..s just one piece of the signal-chain...I don..t know, I think production-wise it..s over-compressed over-tubed liveless shit. ..I don..t know if this is up to the compressors, the preamps, the mics but there is really something sounding sterile, that I think even a garage band recorded over a ribbon mic on an old tape machine sounds more muscial to me. but the production of glow sounds much much better. I think the success of an album has much to do with the sound of the production too. .... ....so make an album in the quality of the old songs, no matter what style of music, if soft or hard, if pop or electro, I would buy every singe song. ..make an album in the new style you try to create and it..s very unsure if I would be interested in every song. so from that point is is better to bring out singles, ..cause it..s obvious that zetgeist didn..t had a great success and it were really rsiky to put out a second album and questionable if the pumpkins would get a record deal again for releasing a second album. I mean if they don..t see chances for their music anymore it clear that they say those things: uh, no albums anymore, jsut singles, just club tours. ..every garag-band is able to make an album and to let people hear it. ..machina 2 was never officially released, but so many people are interested in this album and really like to hear it...they blame the record industry, the old fans but can..t speak the truth: musically they ain..t as good as they were in the 90ies and the main reasons for that ist not the fanbase, or the record industrie...that..s obvious.

What a great interview. Funny story about Boston. ..It's just really strange that people grow old and change through out life but still wana hear the same old thing. I've loved the old pumpkins music of course, but I love the new stuff too. Even though I don't physically know Billy and Jimmy.. I think of them as family, and there music is what connects us... for me in my life.

Totally cool exchange! Billy Corgan does not pull any punches. It will be interesting and exciting to see how the band continues to evolve going forward. One of the true treasures that came out of CHI-TOWN!
 

I bet you like to give me electric shocks for what I am writing! *autsch* lame dude is calling! no, I..m not "this" lame dude, maybe I..m his brother! I..m just kiding...! : "you suck fuckheads, but I can..t even play ONE string of a guitar without everyone complaining!" it..s so hard to be so high! "high in the sky, there no one else" ....is like youuuu! to be prominent is the bright side of loneliness... I guess you and everyone else who has made it are afraid, because you don..t belong to the "normal people" anymore and that..s why you can..t go back, no one will tread you like a normal person anymore. - they..ll tread you like product with personality, like a star. excution for exlusion... I guess you try to run away from this fact by giving people always the unexpected, because this makes it look like you were more an artist than a product? a product deals with the expactations from the purchasers. an artist plays may play with them, may destroy them or whatever. but is this really that difference? can you "really" be an artist without beeing a product the same time? isn..t this a crazy time we..re living in?! you may care how to make money in hmm... 20 years? who will be on your bed when you..re dying holding your hand. who will be there, if you can..t drive the cool cars anymore? who "is" really there with good itensions!? and fans can write they stupid comments "I love you, I hate you" and change the voltage from plus to minus every time...AC/DC or BC/JC? anyways... hey, I know that people also comment dictionaries on amazon... a little stupid in the brain.. between wrong and right there is a little path...
