The Guild Cinema and the Irish Freedom Committee present a southwest premiere --

The Wind That Shakes the Barley

Directed by Ken Loach
Produced by Rebecca O'Brien
Written by Paul Laverty
Starring Cillian Murphy, Orla Fitzgerald, Padraig Delaney, Liam Cunningham

The Wind That Shakes The Barley is a Palme d'Or-winning 2006 film set during the Irish War of Independence (1919–1921) and the subsequent Irish Civil War (1922–1923). The film tells the story of two brothers who become part of a small group of Irish Republican Army activists. Although it is focused on Irish history and identity and stars mostly Irish actors, the film was made by British director Ken Loach and is an international co-production between companies in Ireland, the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

Time for my encapsulated review of the movie after seeing it on 29 April --

This is an intense and gut-wrenching movie. The technical aspects involved in making the movie were very well-handled. That being said, this was NOT a happy story -- for example, one brother sanctions the execution of the other by firing squad. If you're looking for movies that leave you with a warm fuzzy at the end, this one isn't for you.

However, the bad stories still need to be told and listened to. If that didn't happen, how would anyone ever learn from the mistakes and misdeeds of others?

That being said, I whole-heartedly recommend that you the reader see this movie at the first chance you get.
