Hi there -

I am sending this to all of you with whom I have had the pleasure of recording, and a few of those that have recently discussed new projects...

Noticing the ‘slow down’ in the economy and having had conversations with many of you about it’s impact on ‘us’, I spent the last week visiting some of the studios wherein I periodically work, as well as a few new ‘rooms’.  I’ve had discussions about the lagging state of the Industry and the economy with studio managers and other engineers/producers and have negotiated new rates for my clients and their projects at three facilities optimized for ‘my kind’ of productions...

Much like the Housing sector of the economy, our industry has been pretty hard hit...the studio managers notice it as do the staffers that work these facilities...they are all anxious to work with clients to get the gigs in the door.  The time to record, if you’re ready, is now.  As soon as this situation turns and the rooms start booking again, the rates will rebound.  That might be in 6 months...or later..or sooner.

As most of you know, I already have preferential rates at most of the NYC rooms...at Legacy, for example, the ‘book rate’ is $2250/day in Studio ‘A’...best jazz room in NYC...basically the best ‘any kind’ of room for that matter...my rate for my clients has been $1800 for the same day for the last three years.  After my meeting there yesterday, I have reason to believe that I can cut that cost by a few hundred dollars.

Two more rooms have offered me the same savings...one room perfect for overdubs or more ‘electric’ projects, overdubs, editing and mix...and the other room great for tracking small groups – with a lovely Steinway.

In addition, I have adjusted my own day rates to reflect these ‘tough times’ and keep the music going.  My new rig at home allows me to do all editorial and some mix work, thus saving additional studio cost.

A word to the wise:
Be opportunistic, folks...if you can afford to work now, I would suggest you get in before the prices go back up.

All the best – call me if you want to chat about a project.
