This is a simple concept, really, and one that has become inevitable in this day and age...
There are three basic problems with recording and mixing a project nowadays...the technology, the expertise, and the money.
Let's look at the tech first. There and myriad software platforms now available with which one can manipulate sound and record music ...from garage band to protools to nuendo to cubase to...dozens more. They all offer basically the same thing...a method to record and mix at home or in a small project studio at a fairly reasonable budget..with fairly reasonable results. They're fun, fast, easy to use and offer instant gratification. One can even create sounds of orchestras, guitars, classic reverberation or delay sounds, drums, voices, pianos....blue whales for heaven's sake !!! it's cool and it has changed the industry. But in most cases the quality of the final product still doesn't com up to the mark of excellence a real Artist demands and an audience appreciates.
This brings me to the 'expertise'. Simply knowing how to push the right buttons to get a sound into the computer, or open up a 'plugin' that instantly compresses your vocal track is NOT enough. What is it you are going for? Why doesn't your tune sound right? What the hell is 'compression ratio' anyway? What frequencies on the acoustic bass are making the mix muddy? Where did my guitar sound go? What is the difference between the many reverb programs and their parameters? Why can't i do this ???
This is where you need a REAL engineer...someone that has come up through all this technology and has practiced the Art of recording and mixing WAY before the computer came around. An engineer that remembers that 'eq' used to be called 'correction'...what microphone choice and placement is about...what types of reverbs work well together...and so many other elements that only time and experience can provide. I have had that time, I have developed that experience and vocabulary.
Now the money...
Let's say you want to record a small group 'live' to get that sound of interaction and communication...and you don't have either the correct acoustic space or the expensive gear to make this happen, or to make it sound like the stuff you hear on the radio...been there? So you need to rent space in a recording studio for at least the hours or days of tracking (recording) the music...costs range from $50/hour to $3000/day. You know the drill. If you go cheap in, you get cheap out....some 'house engineer' that basically runs a studio like a business and has long since stopped caring or taking responsibility for a great product...or worse, the 'assistant guy' that you get for the low budget room you are using...great, man, you have thrown lots of bread at a project that will NOT sound the way you want your music to sound. Is that REALLY worth it? Do you TRUST that approach with your music...and your MONEY ?
Then you have to edit the songs...get rid of the 'noise'...the 'clicks' and 'pops'...the 'bad' notes...and perhaps (in a lot of cases now) you need to tune some notes here and there...well, there's software for that as well, right? Of course. Again...what do you use and HOW do you use it?
And then you have to mix it all to sound 'right'...'correct'...whatever the genre - Jazz, singer/songwriter...even TV commercials. They all have a 'style' and approach to mixing that makes them sound 'correct'.
Got a stress headache yet? All this is daunting...and for many of you, it's old news. So how do you make it happen economically? At a VERY high level of quality? Without loss of creative input or control?
I have your solution.
Having spent 35 years working in studios, I have spent hundreds, in fact thousands of hours producing, engineering, recording and mixing projects in ALL genres. And as a professional musician, I am sensitive to what an Artist 'needs'...I 'get it'. Understanding the need to make these projects happen these days at a reduced cost, I have set up a system for Editing and Mixing in my home...at a VERY high quality level.
Thus we have 'e-mixing'.
I have been taking on projects at home...using this new system (scary stuff, folks) to do your editing and mixing HERE...with top quality gear and 35 years of experience. At a cost that is FAR below that of even a cheap studio, with TOP studio results. It's not hard if you know what you are doing...and have the tools to do it.
I am so impressed with this system that i am willing to do your mixes, send them to you for approval and 'changes' and NOT CHARGE you until you are happy...
Like it? Want to try it? See any risk? Right...no risk.
...and finally, if you need an engineer to track your session in a real studio before editing or mixing, I'm your man. I plan projects CAREFULLY, with an eye on the final desired results...I create and adhere to budgets and have preferential deals in half a dozen NYC studios at ALL price points.
I invite you to review some of my work (tip of the iceberg) on the 'examples of work' link...
Give me a call or email me...you post your files, I download them and do the right job. I win, you win.
Cheers !
