Who Gives Kudos:

Wednesday, July 01, 2009

Hello everyone,    hope you're all in good health and spirits. Tour continues to go well. Great audiences and crazy shows. I managed to get Beginner's lesson 8 to Dick and Linda before I left AZ., so they will get it to you soon.

To answer some recent questions: regarding harmonics in "Keith Don't Go", there's Intermediate Guitar Lesson 2 which is all about how to play harmonics and Lesson 1 has the "Keith" song mapped out and includes those specifics.  The thumb pick I'm using in the new Fender Strat video on the "Ghost of Tom Joad" solo with the "guitar cam" view is a standard ..Golden Gate.. thumbpick (large), as I have thick fingers. In recent Hyde Park show, what looked like a black Les Paul is actually a Gretsch Black Penguin (solid body) with gold trim that I've been using on last two E St. tours along with Black Falcons (hollow body). Both the Falcon and the Penguin have a custom Bixby vibrato bar. (got that suggestion from Tom Lofgren- thanks Tommy!) Regarding acoustic strings verses playing ease:  the lighter the string, the easier they are to handle. Flat wound strings (no ridges like traditional wound round) may suit you but in general, the heavier the string, the richer the sound and the harder to play. Lighter strings, the sound gets thinner and easier to finger. Good luck!

Having a great time out here on tour with Amy along.  Be safe everyone and I'll stay in touch.

Peace and Believe  - Nils

I've been paying a lot more attention to the specifics of guitars lately as I'm looking at getting something nicer to replace my SG but I completely missed the black penguin in Hyde Park (great show :) )

I've noticed more people using Bigsby's lately, of course Neil has had one for ages - I love the look of the Bigsby with a wraparound tail piece on a Les Paul type guitar. I noticed Bruce had a white Tele with a Bigsby on in Hyde Park that I hadn't seen before. Its nice to see different guitars getting out even if the crowd noise does kind of drown them out :)

Enjoy the tour, we had to book flights over to Dublin for mum to get to a gig this year so see you there!

PS, you might be able to answer this. Mum seems to think that Bruce's original old tele is not on tour with him at the moment and on display somewhere. I couldn't understand why Bruce would leave it behind but I've seen a lot of photos of a similar looking tele that has black pickups like the ones in your strat (the standard strat size ones with double rails type coils). Has the original been left behind?

Harvest (a tribute to Neil Young)

Hi Nils.

Can you tell me which Bigsby vibrato bar you are using on the Penguin? Work it work on a Les Paul ? I have a B7 on my Gibson Les Paul but it's driving me insane. The guitar just won't stay in tune. I'm considering switching to a different vibrato bar or completely removing it which would be very disappointing. Would you have any tips?

I've had a guy named Derrick Nelson look at it. Derrick looks after The Edge's guitars in Dublin so he knows what's he talking about it. Derrick is stumped :-(

I play in a Neil Young tribute named Harvest so the Black LP with the bigsby is perfect for Neil's rockers, and I'm very reluctant to remove it - I love the sound of it.

Thanks,
Sean O'Leary
