Current mood: content Category: MySpace
Funny how time flies. It seems like it was just yesterday when I asked my coworker, Daniel, what happened to his band's website & forum, and he told me that they shut it down, then said "Have you ever heard of Myspace?"
The answer was no, I hadn't. But he told me that's where everyone was online now. Over the next few months, after I'd checked it out, I used to mock him, and another of our coworkers who was on it, for wasting their time with it. I thought it was stupid, which is odd, since back then I was a rather frequent poster on several online message boards, which is not much different from posting on Myspace. So why was I such a snob?
Eventually, Daniel announced that he was quitting and moving to another state, and I figured that Myspace would probably be the easiest way to keep in touch with him. So I signed up. That was in August, 2006. And, as they say, the rest is history.
It's been a fun ride. I know there are folks who only add people that they really know, & I understand that. But, to me, that seems like such a wasted opportunity. I think that the best thing about the internet is how it makes the world smaller, & gives us the opportunity to interact with people whom we normally wouldn't. I've got "friends" from all walks of life. Flaming homosexuals, and extreme right-wing conservative Christians. Teenagers & middle-aged folks. Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, & 1 Scientologist. People from all across America, & countries as far away as Amstedam, Japan, South Africa, & Israel.
I think it's great. True, I'll probably never actually meet most of them (although I have meet some, and talked to a few on the phone, &, with one exception, the experience was always pleasant), but it's fun to get to know people like this.
I've also enjoyed the many discussions I've had during blogs, my own, and others. Even when they've occasionally got a bit, shall we say, "heated."
But all good things must come to an end. Basically, there's just not enough hours in the day, & I find myself getting too far behind in keeping up with everyone. I log in, there's a dozen blogs I haven't read, but don't have time to get to get to. So I decide to wait until the next day, & then there's a dozen more, & it just adds up. I hate to say that I look @ my friend list, currently @ 310, & there are several people that I don't quite recognize. I used to be very good @ staying in touch with everyone but, again, I just don't have the time anymore, with all of my other online activities. So, something has to give...
I signed up to Facebook back in 2007, & have come to find that much easier. I don't have to make much of an effort to keep up with people, because the way the status updates & automatic notifications work, it just lets me know what people are up to.
It's like, when I log in to Myspace, I feel like I have to do stuff. Read blogs, leave comments, respond to comments, send messages, comment on pictures, etc. So if I don't feel like doing that, I just stay off, which is how I end up falling behind. With Facebook, I can just log in, have it open in an extra tab on my browser, & look in whenever I feel like it. Actually I use a browser called "Flock," which has a widget built into it that logs FB right into my home page, & updates the Friend Activity.
The one downside is that folks don't blog much on FB. But I've signed up to both Blogspot & Wordpress, write my new blogs on that, then post a link on FB. Up until now I've been posting everything on each site, but it's too much trouble to have to keep checking each one.
So I'm simplifying my online time. I'm just going to stick with FB and Blogspot. I'm semi-retiring from Myspace. I'm not quitting altogether, or deleting my account. I've got too many folks on here that I want to keep in touch with, whom are, so far, not on FB. So I'll be checking in from time to time, to look @ pics. and occasionally read blogs.
So I'll be around, but I won't be posting any new blogs here, or commenting on a regular basis. I've blocked my account from accepting any new friend requests, & turned off my email notifications, except for private messages, & comments on my page. So if you need to get in touch with me that way, you can.
Otherwise, I'm hoping most of you (yes, YOU), will just sign up to Facebook, as well.
