Simply put, there are no parapsychology degrees in the US given out by accredited colleges or universities. Too many paranormal researchers label themselves parapsychologists  because they have been in the field a long time or have taken an online course and become certified  - which I might add, is not the same as having an accredited degree. For the right price, anyone can take these classes without ever investigating anything up until they take these courses. Ever watch The Girls Next Door with the playboy bunnies? Bridgett took an online course. Does this make her a paranormal researcher or parapsychologist? I guess it does if she's taken the correct courses and passed them online, at least according to those she's given her money to. Not the same to me as a degree that is offered by an accredited institution - which there are none.
Don't get me wrong, these courses do have their place. They are very good at introducing what it means to be a paranormal researcher and how to go about doing things correctly. Just don't think you're a real parapsychologist because you've taken them.
Here is the definition of a parapsychologist:
Main Entry: para·psy·chol·o·gy
Pronunciation: "pa-r&-(")sI-'kä-l&-jE
Function: noun
Etymology: International Scientific Vocabulary
: a field of study concerned with the investigation of evidence for paranormal psychological phenomena (as telepathy, clairvoyance, and psychokinesis)
This definition only deals with the psychological aspect. Where does "ghost hunting" come into play here? Is it because someone THINKS they saw a ghost or THINKS they have a haunting?
If you're told by someone that they are a parapsychologist then they are probably lying to you and have taken one of those online courses to receive their "degree".

Even Jeffrey Mishlove's degree is in philosophy. This website states that he has a doctorate in parapsychology, which if you read the diploma, he doesn't. His doctural dissertation was in parapsychology, not his degree.

Don't believe there are no true degrees in the US for parapsychology? Check out these links or research the many others for yourself.

This is very valuable advice and information to newer groups and ghost hunters.  Quite frankly folks-it doesnt take a degree in rocket science to be paranormal investigator.  It does take quite a lot of realism (its an expensive hobby to say the least) and some decent common sense (if it is an old house with leaky windys a draft is probably just a draft-not a cold spot).  The study of paranormal anything is vast and non-exact for the most part.  Many, many variable play a part in thid field and the more we think we got them all covered the more we find out we don't.  I love what I do and I love to study and read.  You can't get into this field half cocked and unarmed with some sort of knowledge.  If these "courses" provide the learner with some ground work then it is certainly not a bad thing to do.  BUt nothing replaces experience and study-and NOTHING can prepare you for your first unexplainable experience.  If you can use your "degree" to beat the ghostie back and chase it into another dimension...hey go for it but until then its not the piece of paper- its knowledge, common sense and experience.  Thanks for a well written heads-up!

Thank you. I am so sick of frauds and liars being accepted as if they are not charletans. It's disheartening to those of us doing the REAL WORK. kudos to you for speaking out. Apparently there is an abundance of suck up Lemmings who just follow along with the best storyteller in town irregardless of the ridiculousness of thei claims!

I happened across a former associate that has a profile on Meetup. Not only does she now claim to be a medium, she also says she's a credentialed parapsychologist! What a load of fertilizer!

I mainly feel sorry for the unspecting public because the "lady" is nothing she claims.

Thank you Lance. I believe I know exactly who you're talking about, although this wasn't written about that person. I believe she may have taken one of those online courses I was talking about. I just got tired of seeing people say they were parapsychologists when they aren't. Working in the field for 20 yrs still does not give you an accreditied degree.
By the way, how are things in Denton?

I think this is exactly why you have a group of investigators. To get different opinions and a different take on things.
I really advocate follow up investigations when possible either by the same group or by another, totally different group. Once again, a different take on things and possibly better, or different results. We won't however disclose where exactly investigations are done. Competitive maybe, but we may just be in the process of doing several investigations to gather more data for analysis. If we need a follow up though, we will always try to contact another group in the investigation area if we're not able to do it. Also, many newer groups have emailed asking us to give them locations to investigate, which we're always happy to do if we're finished investigating the property ourselves.
