Current mood:Altruistic
Hi all, it's been awhile but trust me, we're all well happy and enjoying ourselves. This is a notice to canadians and ontarians/torontonians about a film made in 2006 locally in conjunction w. greenpeace and offshoot groups called 'Sharkwater'. It's an indie flick denouncing the typical stereotype of Sharks as vicious killers, and calls to attention their importance in the ocean's eco-system, which in turn directly affects us.
It's visually stunning and the content is heartbreaking as the Taiwanese Mafia, Costa Rican pirates, and insatiable Chinese appetite for shark fin shows just how much illegal shark finning these folks have gotten up to in this billion dollar industry. It's painful to see the underhanded shit these parasites get up to, the unfathomable pain and agony they inflict on the sharks/marine land, and the obstacles they put in the way for a local boy trying to stop it.
here's a touching blog acct. done w. more regularity than here (hah!...although i suppose I would change it if i knew people were actually interested in reading words anymore). The first one is from a Canadian girl running a diving shop in Costa Rica http://www.abandonfear.com/ the comments are endearing, as english is clearly not a first language.
I'm throwin' in my shoulder w. this gang...as i think sharks are beautiful and don't deserve to have their numbers decimated (their population has dropped by a whopping 90% though they have been around for 400 million years---has anything else been here as long and undergone such limited change?). I have no intention of getting preachy, it's just something that is NOT cool with me, and we can do something, however small, about it. Even if it's only to watch the flick.
So! Let me know if you want to check out the flick, i have a burnt copy i can share, but I'd much rather you go to sharkwater.com or savingsharks.com and help out. Of course...I'd rather you see the film too, so .......see the film. One way or the other.
down with pirates and parasites,
Ranbir.
