Okay, I confess, this is not going to be much of a review, because I honestly don't feel like it right now. But Invisible Monsters (by the same guy who wrote Fight Club) is the best book I've read in a long time. It's one of the best books I've ever read, period.
Palahniuk's style is really cool. Lots of fragments and run-on sentences peppered with bizarre, twisted imagery. He also researches his subject matter to death, which leads to the inclusion of amazing little details that only draw you further into the story. The force of his prose is totally inescapable. It's so intense that I literally found myself holding my breath and shaking at points. My head was spinning, I was approaching euphoria...it's that freaking good.
The story is gruesome and will undoubtedly alienate more than a few. It's about a fashion model who gets her jaw ripped off in an accident and goes on a weird, prescription drug-fueled odyssey across the western U.S. with a transexual diva and a pseudo-philosophical boy toy.
But yeah, its a fantastic read if you can handle the subject matter. The story moves at a rapid-fire pace and the twists and turns deliver plenty of shock and awe. Check it out.
