Under the Bush administration rule, any activities outside the Arctic that cause global warming will not be considered a violation of the Endangered Species Act. But this makes no sense, given that the main threat to polar bears is their loss of sea ice habitat due to global warming.

Now Secretary Salazar needs to decide whether to follow in the Bush administration's footsteps, or defend our country's endangered wildlife from the oil and gas lobby.
