Well, actually it's not entirely my idea. I was in a class once, and we had to choose a story from which to make a film. And the only actual screenplay was submitted by a student. It took place in a home, surrounded by a minefield. In the house lived a guy and a girl, who were on the outs, and a dog, who spoke to the guy. The dog was trying to get the girl killed.
I hated the part about the dog. But the rest wasn't bad. I would have added a layer of a fog around the minefield to make it more visually interesting, but we never did that movie. I actually wanted to combine that idea with another story that was submitted, but was turned down.
Anyway, the minefield thing has often stuck with me, because I find it so visually interesting, but I can never find the right story to fit around it. The reason I bring it up is because Mel and I are considering doing a feature.
Most likely it will be a horror, because it's easy to sell, but I want to make sure I can put my mark on it, so I won't be labeled a horror director, since I don't particularly like horror movies.
I do know that I want it to be visually interesting. I would love to create a completely original visual style for the movie, but that's going to be dictated by story.
Which is where I'm at now. And the minefield came creeping back into my head today. I don't know, is this the chance I finally get to use that setting?
