Mercury Crowe Set Your Mind to Fly Self-released
Family Cactus and Mercury Crowe are Wellington bands blowing life into the rock genre. Adam Ladley is the lyricist for Family Cactus, bringing together the creative input of six other band members with backgrounds in rock, country, blues and pop. The musical results sound like the louder Flying Nun bands of 20 years ago, especially Straightjacket Fits. But the repetitive rhythms are reminicent of Australian indie band Art of Fighting. It has it's moments. But, with up to nine musicians competing for attention on some of the tracks, many of the aural subtleties are lost in the mix at medium volume, sabotaging what could have been a great debut album. Mercury Crowe have more modest aims, churning out melodic, bluesy rock riffs that have been the staple of kiwi pub bands for 40 years. It was to be their second EP, but they couldn't decide which of their nine original songs to ditch so opted for a 38-minute rock album. It was recorded live in the studio, which proved to be a great decision for a gig-hardened band with a residency at Wellington's Cavern Club. The band should have no trouble selling all 300 copies of this boisterous, energetic album.
