On First Friday, March 6, the Community Center for the Performing Arts will proudly host an Opening Reception for Michael Perkins who will display Hammered Metal Pieces in the Lobby Art Gallery of the WOW Hall.
Says Perkins,
“I was born in West Virginia and later moved to Washington, DC as a young adult. I moved to the West Coast in 1976, living first in Pomona, California where I attended Mt. San Antonio Community College and then in Santa Barbara where I graduated with a BA from UCSB. I then moved to Santa Cruz where I started my family and business, continued my education and played in a number of musical groups. We have made our home in the Eugene area for the past three years.
“I have been a visual artist for 30 years, working as a sculptor, wood and slate carver and mixed media artist. I create artwork using the bottoms of steel barrels (this art form stems from my career as a steel drum instrument craftsman). I use a hammer and blunt tip punch in order to create this art form. Images are created from designs in popular culture, logos, icons, trademarks and original designs. The steel barrels exhibited are from a large body of work nearing 100 pieces and encompassing over 25 years of expression.”
The Opening Reception runs from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and features entertainment by the steel drum band Apocalypso. The Lobby Art Gallery is open for viewing during office hours, noon to 6:00 pm M-F. The WOW Hall is located at the corner of 8th and Lincoln in Eugene. For more information please call 687-2746.
