Toy Gun Cowboy "Big Blue" Gutter Grove Records I'm lost like a kite decomposing in forgotten tree, I've seen some things turn my mind like a wrench. AUGUSTA, GA - So states the Toy Gun Cowboy, in this conceptual portrait of the departure of mankind from the Garden of Eden into a world of uncertainty and turmoil. Laced with charming melodies over the infusion of jazzy drumbeats and cross steps of rhythm, this album flies out of the opening track into a network of sound frenzy that captivates the ears while awakening the social unrest of the brain cells with haunting visions of the world as a bottomless expanse of misunderstanding and questions. This cowboy speaks of fractures in his soul to soft sound of peaceful wind chimes blending with wiry guitar echoes. With a calm, almost deliberate, delivery style, Toy Gun Cowboy slices through the beauty of the melodies with a dark world of intense consideration begging for meaning in the passage of human existence.
His third release on Gutter Groove Records, "Big Blue" highlights the versatility of sound at the hands of the Toy Gun Cowboy. From baby talk interludes, to record scratching reminiscent of house club scenes, to haunting guitar reverberations and organ strains overlaid with pounding beats, the album is a consistent thread of unification of diverse sounds and techniques. While no two songs sound alike, the combination of the whole paints a fascinating portrait of sound in play, which delights the senses.
For the Toy Gun Cowboy, the world revolves around an intricate mixture of diversity expressed in the formation of metaphorical imagination. In the forgotten trees of "Looking for a Park Bench" and the moaning of the organs in "Chatterbox", listeners are invited into a world of continuous change and uncertainty. In the funky exclamations of "Soldier On" the relentless struggle of living comes to life between the intermingled beats and changing vocal tones. The ferocious call of "Blowing Holy Smoke" set to the organic rhythms of reverberated echoes leaves an ethereal feeling of completion reminiscent of early folk albums and long nights with mushrooms in a field. Throughout the piece, the diversity of the sound encapsulates the uncertainty inherent in this earthly existence.
In the end, Big Blue is sure to tickle the taste buds of the experimentally inclined with its infusion of variety into a conceptual whole. Combining the best elements of Beck's T"he Information," Thom Yorke's "The Eraser," and "Blinking Lights and Other Revelations" by the Eels, this album is sure to find a home in the ears of people seeking metaphorically significant lyrics overlaid with the diverse interplay of experimental melody. ....
