The Rubber Room

I'll start by saying that I have more than a few greatest hits collections of Porter's music. 'The Rubber Room" has a number of hits but is much more than a greatest hits collection. More than a few of the tracks presented here had never made it to CD until this release.
This is a new collection (2006) of the darker and more eclectic tracks from Porter Wagoner. The songs were recorded and featured on several different albums that originally debuted between the years of 1966-1977. I just got this CD delivered to me Monday (11/27) and was eager with anticipation. Along with some classics I knew (Cold Hard Facts of Life, The 1st Mrs. Jones, Carrol County Accident & The Rubber Room) this CD is loaded with great songs that range from traditional country to innovative and ballsy arrangements that proudly stray from the other wise predictable country stylings of the day. I love the entire CD but the songs "Fair Child", "Jim Johnson", "Woman Hungry" & "Julie" would be my current favorites. Whether looking for some classic Porter Hits or some great obscure tracks this CD will not disappoint!

The Thin Man From The West Plains-

I recently purchased this collection off of Amazon.com for  $67.99 and I have to admit that it has exceeded my wildest expectations. I'm a huge fan and the 112 songs on this 4CD collection have been quite a treat. These songs range from the years of 1952-1962 Porter's 1st decade of recorded output. The Hank Williams influence is wonderfully prevalent on the earlier tracks and The booklet alone (36 pages!) would have been worth the price of purchase! This box set was made in vinyl LP dimensions & contains many full-page size portraits of Porter and family, band mates & country greats such as Chet Atkins, Hank Snow, June Carter & Don Warden. Some of these tracks were previously unreleased until 1993 which is the year that this box set debuted. Some cuts appear twice in different versions mainly two of my favorites- "Midnight" & "I Thought I heard You Calling My Name". The haunting "Cold Dark Waters" & gospel classic "Legend of The Big Steeple" round out this collection nicely and once again there isn't a weak spot to be found. I bought mine new and would suggest that route whereas the used copies I found were only a few bucks cheaper and new can be returned.

Gospel 2006-

Porter's latest Gospel release is a great example of his prowess for being "The King Of Country Gospel". This collection has collected many awards this year and features 12 new tracks including "The Dream (A True Story)" and 3 great duets with Pam Gadd. "Dreaming Of A Little Cabin", "Old Country Church" & "If We Never Meet Again (This Side Of Heaven)".

I will periodically update this blog as I find more new releases & I hope this helps some of you get acquainted with more of Porter's wonderful music.
                                                           Happy listening!
