What comes to mind when you hear the word "art rock"? Pretentious?
Insular? Self-important?
The Denver Art Rock Collective (D.A.R.C.) has never done a good job
of living up to its heritage and tradition… until now. On Saturday
May 24th, the Toad Tavern (5302 S. Federal Cir. Littleton, 303-795-
6877) will host the most self-congratulatory and solipsistic night
of the year: The D.A.R.C. Tribute to Itself. Come hear five of
Colorado's finest art rock bands as they play each other's songs as
well as some of their own. If you've ever wondered what New Ancient
Astronauts would sound like sung by Yerkish (or vice versa) this is
your chance to find out. All proceeds from the evening will go to
help benefit D.A.R.C. itself, just because they're greedy bastards.
Also the Denver Art Rock Collective will provide a toaster, if you
bring your own slice of bread, they will toast it for you. Butter
and jelly not included.
The festivities begin at 8:30 with the ADD-inspired instrumental
adventures of Action Friend. Following that will be the Glam Metal
meets New Wave stylings of Amphibious Jones. At 10:30 enjoy the
unique instrumentation and sensibilities of The Inactivists. After
which New Ancient Astronauts will perform their own brand of steam
age space punk. Capping off the evening will be the simian
multimedia experience which is Yerkish.
Remember, this is a night of "experimental music", and like all
experiments carries with it the terrible possibility of going
horribly awry. If you are the type who likes to watch NASCAR on
Narcoleptic Amateur Night, this will be the concert event of the
year!
